Please what are the career choices in medical laboratory after nysc?
The field is wide and open depends on your interest.
MLS working in Hospital/ Diagnostic Facilities: The most common known to everyone
Academia : Good thing is with BMLS you are taken as Assistant Lecturer against MSc needed for most other courses.
Sales/Marketing : A lot of MLS work with companies like ISN marketing lab equipment, consumables and they make real cool cash with bonuses for meeting sales target.
Application Specialist: They are the ones that come to install new lab equipment, train users, service it and so on.
NGO: You have those working with the likes of IHVN, SFH, FHI360 among others were they are engaged in wide range of jobs and activities from epidemiology to Monitoring/Evaluation. Usually most have advance degree like MPH in addition to BMLS.
Research : You have organizations like XceneResearch, NIMR involved in clinical trials and other medical research.
Tech: you also have those that have branched into areas like software development building LIS softwares, Hospital data management etc.
so you have wide options to choose from. Working in the bench is just a small fraction of what MLS do.

Hi guys, please i need a little help here.. I am trying to apply for HCPC and on their site, they require proof of address and the only two options they stated they need are utility bill or bank statements showing address of your home.

The issue is my Aedc meter bill is in my land lady's name. This is what i would prefer to use but it does not bear my name.

How do i solve this please?
Use the address on your bank statement to fill your application. It does not matter if it is in the same state you are in now or not. As long as it is still in Nigeria.

The law demands that all employees are entitled to pension but na enforcement in all establishments be the problem.
There is no private university that you won't be paid your pension, they are not small scale business. You register with Pension fund administrator that the university uses, you get your employee deduction and employer pays their part too. All PFA have online portal where you can be monitoring your pension balance and getting email reports periodically. Almost all private universities use same public universities salary scale, difference maybe in allowances but if they don't pay equivalent of public uni they can't get senior lecturers and proffessors to lecture

Can someone with a MLS or MLA certificate from Canada work in Nigeria? Is there a process to get the Nigerian license or do I have to graduate from a Nigerian MLS program to get the license?
MLSCN has a foreign educated scientist program, you will have to mail council, they usually spend a year in teaching hospital undergoing training before taking licensing exam. But wondering what will make anyone leave Canada to come do MLS in Niaja grin

Please elders in the house, I need your advice.

My dream has always been to work in the lab as a medical lab scientist. Due to some factors, I couldn’t get admitted into the course in Nigeria, I had to study medical biochemistry.

The conversion course was also stopped in Nigeria so I couldn’t move over.

Now, I will be resuming in UK for MSc Biotechnology next month, I have the following questions, please:

1. Is it still worth it pursuing a conversion to Biomedical Science practice in the UK? Is it possible?

2. If yes, how? Are there courses and internship to take to join IBMS, and eventually HCPC so I am ready to take on NHS roles immediately after graduation.

3. Or should I just fully pursue Biotechnology which seems to have limited opportunities and sponsorship in the UK compared to Biomedical Science.

Note: The only time I practiced biomedical science was during my IT in Nigeria few years ago. But I have worked in the health/wellness awareness space ever since graduation.

Thanks a lot
you would have applied for msc in Biomedical science, towards completing the program you write to HCPC and they verify your undergraduate transcript, Msc transcript then tell you the top up modules needed to meet requirement for registration as a BMS in Biochemistry. When you do the top up modules from them you can now apply for trainee BMS position which is like the equivalent of internship we do here as MLS, from there you can now be fully registered. I don't think the courses you will take with Msc biotech will fit into HCPC courses at all.

You obviously went for HVS (High Vaginal Swab) MCS test. The compliment is you probably are a virgin. As for the clean vigina others are thinking, you probably washed clean the vigina before going to the hospital. That alone is enough to disqualify you for the test because the expected organisms might be washed off while taking your bath in the morning. The sample is supposed to be taken early morning and before you take bath for the day.
Lol, this is a very ignorant post. Please don't give medical fact when you have no idea what you are talking of, HVS has nothing to do with bathing, the sample is collected from inside the vagina not the outside vulva that is cleaned when bathing. Also a virgin can't get a HVS done as the hymen can't allow getting into the vagina, if patient is a virgin, a vulva swab is done. What the lady most likely is reffeirng to is either her coperation with the procedure or level of hygiene down there. I collect HVS samples and trust me it is not one of the best procedures to do because most patient coming for it obviously have an issue down there that is why they are there for the test.

Career / Re: Must It Be In A Mortuary? by SIMPLIFIED(m): 7:22pm On Apr 17, 2023
Most people saying Mortuary as a degrading response don't even know how difficult it will be to get that except maybe a private one that will pay him peanut. In Govt hospital mortuary, you have the pathologists, resident doctors in pathology, medical Laboratory Scientist( histopathology), morticians all performing different roles from autopsy to tissue processing, embalming etc.
Practical advise I will give him :
1) Risk it and go for DE in professional medical course like nursing, pharmacy, medicine etc. Forget the age he will still be the same age in five or six years time either with a Profesional degree added or still with hustling with the Anatomy degree.
2) If he graduates with 2:1 and below 27 years apply for any of the graduate entry positions in Banks they are all recruiting now to replace Japa people, Insurance firm, audit firm. They don't discriminate on degree.
3) find IVF centers, submit an application to intern there for a year , you can learn a lot on assisted Reproductive technology and get jobs in IVF hospitals and clinic.
4) Apply for medical sales rep position with pharmaceutical and Medical equipment companies.
5) Do a masters and take up lecturing position in school of health, nursing, university and proceed from there to PhD
6) If tech saavy enroll for tech programs such as Alx software engineering, Alt_school Africa software engineering and Data science program among others
Whatever part he choose, don't settle for teaching Biology in secondary school, he will remain trapped there with no progress

I am a Medical Laboratory Scientist and I can conclude from your post you are not even aware of the cost of the procedure you were counseled on. Prenatal genetic screening is not for those earning less than seven digit income monthly. It is a specialized and very expensive procedure with risks because of probing through the womb to collect samples, the trauma of having to do an abortion if it turns out SS, trust me you are planning on embarking on a very uphill journey.

My only reason for applying to a Ph.D. instead of going for a master's first is based on the funding. Most masters do not find their students, many are partial funding, meanwhile, just very few may be fully funded.

Traveling without enough funding it's not worth it unless you have the finance, otherwise, it will be very difficult to survive.

I can't accept any offer if it's not fully funded, provided that I didn't come from a rich family. I have three more schools for Ph.D. and just one for Masters. But the master's is not my line of study. I'm am a Biochemist and the school It's environmental and earth science, but if accepted, it's fully funded. I'm just confused.

At this time, I want to hear lies, just to console myself
calm down, first PhD Admission is competitive and PhD Admission in Biomedical sciences is among the most competitive. As a Nigerian that studied the life sciences you are already at a Lower scale because most of us don't have that hands on lab research exposure, you see those in US doing summer research, PREP and other lab research to be qualified for Biomedical PhD programs. You need to do something outside the basic to gain PhD Admission in Biomed field from a third world country and even graduating with a high CGPA alone won't cut it in this field.
Apply for volunteer research assistant position in a university that has good research lab, places like NIMR, acquire hands on Molecular Biology /bioinformatics skills, you have Inqaba Biotech, Helix Biogene Institute among others. Find postgraduate student in any university in your research area and collaborate in getting publications. Take online courses on Coursera, udemy on Genomics, cancer Biology. Molecular Biology, genetics etc and list on your CV with certificates verified and link attached. This requires adequate planning and dedication, time and money. You are competing against the best from students that are running PCR and Gel Electrophoresis already in their undergrad and many depts take like 5-15 students out of 500+ applicants.

Right @tunlex01, he needs 2 years experience

Looking at your years of service and AIMS requirement for assessment, you need to have 2 years experience in the last 5 years.

You stopped working in 2017 which was 5 years ago hence you do not meet AIMS criteria for experience which is working in a relevant skilled occupation in the last 5 years.

You began working 2 months ago as an MLS, which is good. You would need to work 22 more months to be able to assess with AIMS.

Any more clarification please tag

Additional info: AIMS has increased experience gap year to be 10 years. You might check that out

The main thing for me na cold, bro. Even for naija here, for close to 3 years now, one of my nostrils dey always dey blocked. I don go hospital, take drugs, buy nasal spray e no work. And the symptoms are exacerbated when I feel cold. Can't imagine being in a cold country with these symptoms, honestly.

Let me add this:
I work out. So whenever I do anything that gets my heart racing - it could be as little as 50 pushups, my nostrils immediately get unblocked and I can breathe perfectly.
you need to boost your immune system up, common cold is viral most times and it is strong immune system that is needed to fight it on its own. Eat more healthier foods, ditch sugary drinks, bread, energy drinks. Eat meat, egg, vegetables, liver ( has lots of micronutrients), you can also buy zinc supplements.

Make sure you are going for a course that is in demand and can get sponsorship after your study. Tech, engineering, health related courses. If it is those humanities you will get job like care homes during study but getting one for sponsorship after study is another hurdle. The course matters a lot

No specialty gives you an edge over the other especially in the job market. Because at the end of the day, you are a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Go for the one you enjoy more.

In my school, we have two choices. A major specialty and a minor specialty.

Personally, I want our council to discontinue this pseudo-specialization. It is doing more harm than good.

Well said, specialization in undergraduate level is not needed. you are a generalist just like it is in Medicine, Pharmacy, nursing etc. it should be at postgraduate level for individuals to choose area of specialty. Apart from public hospital and few big private, every other place will employ you as a Scientist and you should be knowledgeable in all areas. Just choose one you are more comfortable in but get hands on experience in all and read wide. Current technologies like Genomics, forensics cut across every field and they are the future.

Impacted wax is not a case meant for referral, I wonder why your doctor did not do the right thing. all you need to do is get cerumol oil ear drop, apply for like three days in both ears to soften the wax, then go to the hospital where even the nurses can do syringing with warm normal saline that is all. consultants have clinic days for outpatient all over the world, you can not bring a referral and expect to be attended to same day. Even in UK it may take you a month to see a consultant in outpatient setting. If it is a case that needs urgent attention it is the Emergency unit such person is taken to and the appropriate medical specialty team called for after examination. That is how it operates globally.

Career / Re: Radiography Vs Nursing Which Is Better by SIMPLIFIED(m): 10:36pm On Jun 30, 2022
If you plan to stay in Nigeria go for Radiography but if you intend to leave go for nursing. Currently Radiographers are in short supply and high demand as not many schools are offering it but with time it will get saturated like medlab and pharmacy. Radiographers are earning equal pay and sometimes higher than Medical officers in private employment currently which is far higher than what nurses are getting. But ease of migration is still fastest for nurses and more job reach and spread outside the country. If you finally migrate to USA and pursue Nurse practitioner or Travel nursing, you will be raking in good money. Also hazards of exposure to radiation over a long time is not much talked about for radiographers, to me they even deserve more pay with that daily work hazard
