U.S. and U.K. Press Statements on Upcoming Nigerian Elections

The United Kingdom and the United State announce repercussions, including restrictions on travel, for election-related violence.

The conduct of the upcoming elections in Nigeria is important not only for Nigeria, but for the African continent.

The United States government does not support any specific candidate or party in Nigeria’s upcoming elections. The United States supports the Nigerian democratic process itself. We support a genuinely free, fair, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.

We, and other democratic nations, will be paying close attention to actions of individuals who interfere in the democratic process or instigate violence against the civilian population before, during, or after the elections. We will not hesitate to consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for those found to be responsible for election-related violence or undermining the democratic process. Under U.S. immigration law, certain violations may also lead to restrictions on family members.

We welcome the signing of peace pledges by Nigerian candidates and their commitment to a peaceful electoral process.

23 days to the Presidential and National Assembly elections and 37 days to the Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections, the British High Commission in Abuja would like to reaffirm our strong support for free, fair and peaceful elections in Nigeria.

We and our international partners remain committed supporters of Nigeria’s democracy. We do not support any party or individual and believe that the Nigerian people should be able to choose their leaders in an environment free from hate speech and insecurity.

We continue to provide significant support to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission and to Nigerian civil society to help them deliver credible elections. We also regularly engage with actors across the political spectrum to encourage them to respect electoral rules and maintain an atmosphere of peace and calm. We will be deploying an extensive observation mission for the forthcoming elections, including coordinating with the EU’s Election Observation Mission. A man based in South Africa has died after travelling back to his village in the eastern part of Nigeria to celebrate the Yuletide.

The deceased simply identified as Somadina popularly known as Soma, was laid to rest amid tears in his hometown on Tuesday, January 22nd (yesterday) following his death which left family and friends heartbroken. 

Though the exact cause of his death is yet to be determined as at the time of filing this report, some have alleged that the deceased was poisoned while others said he slept and didn't wake up.

His colleagues have blamed the enemies in his village who waited for him to come back before striking.

Popular Singer Niniola Apata has purchased the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms for 30 students.

She said the gesture which is being carried out under her foundation “Adopt A Child’s Education,” was part of her giving back to the society

Niniola, an elder sister to Singer Tenientertainer, launched “Adopt A Child’s Education” foundation in July 2018.

She took to her Instagram page @officialniniola on to announce that her foundation and she have successfully gotten JAMB forms for 30 Students.

She wrote; “I promise to do more and walk in my late Dad’s shoes…”

Niniola said the foundation `is her own way of stepping into her late father’s shoes, a man who was known for his advocacy for standard education for every child’

The Presidential Candidate, Grassroots Development Party of Nigeria (GDPN), Dr. Davidson Akhimien, on Thursday unfolded his plans to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the country if elected in 2019.

The Edo State-born candidate said to win the war against Boko Haram, he would concentrate on identifying and neutralizing sponsors of the terrorist group.

Akhimien, who recently flagged off his campaign at Onuebum, Ogbia, Bayelsa State, said the conspiracy theories fueling insurgency in the North-East must be properly interrogated instead of ignoring them.

He said: “I have evaluated our security problems. I have done a threat analysis and I have seen at the highest level you have terrorism, which is a global phenomenon. Terrorism in the North East my approach is going to be double prongs. I will be using the political economy approach and the military approach.

“In the political economy approach, we will be looking at conspiracy theories and interrogating them properly. We don’t just wave them off. We have been in this thing for over eight years. Who are the sponsors? Why haven’t we been able to lay hands on the sponsors of this thing?

“What are the causative factors, economic neglect and lack of empowerment of the youths. So, we are going to bring about massive interventions. Deploy resources to engage the youths in productive ventures instead of leaving them in IDP camps. No matter how you deploy the military without taking care of ‘stomach infrastructure’, they will still win you”.

Akhimien further said he would tinker with the Order of Battle (OBAT) of the country’s Armed Forces to concentrate efforts in defeating the ragtag Boko Haram.

“I will tinker with the Order of Battle of the Armed Forces. In the principle of war, there is what we call concentration of forces. If it will require two divisions of the army, 10 squadrons of the Air Force to decimate the ragtag army, what am l doing with my divisions in town?

“I will deploy them. They are there to protect the territorial integrity of the country, which is being threatened. Asymmetric warfare at this time requires speed, sophistication of weapons which we are lacking in many areas”, he said.

On fight against corruption, the presidential candidate said he would first carry out a judicial reform to cleanse the third arm of government.

Observing that many judges are still corrupt in the country, he said without clearing the rot in the judiciary, nothing much could be achieved in the war against graft.

He said: “In many areas, we have faltered as a country. In the immediate, the judiciary is very key in bringing about a corrective measure when it comes to the issues of corruption. We are going to be carrying out judicial reforms at optimal levels. Most judges are corrupt.

“But the judiciary is supposed to be the fulcrum of the democratic institutions. We will cleanse the judiciary and there will be consequences for action. It will be a case of who knows the law and not who knows the judge. It will bring about the self-corrective mechanism in the society.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate has not arrived in the United States and the Nigerian embassy in Washington is not aware that he is on the way.

The Embassy said it was not yet sure if the former Vice-President would be visiting any moment soon.

A competent source at the embassy told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the embassy was yet to get official information about the former vice president.

Atiku was being rumoured to have arrived the United States on Thursday night. Some other reports said he was on his way.

The embassy source, however, said the embassy was awaiting official communication to that effect.

“Actually, we have not received any information for the embassy but we are just trying to find out whether really he is coming. That is what we are doing right now.

“They told us he’s coming tonight, today, so we are trying to find out whether he’s really coming.

“Mr (Peter) Obi, (Atiku’s running mate), he was to come last week but the event was cancelled.

“So we are still trying to see but if you get anything, please just let us know also because they said he’s coming here so that if you’re able to get any updated information, just inform us so that we can prepare vehicles to go to the airport and meet him and all that.

“For now, we have no information. If I am able to confirm anything, I will get back to you and please, if you too get any confirmation or any update, just get back to me, just call me.

“As a former Vice President, the Embassy is supposed to organise to receive him at the airport and all that, but then we have not received anything in that regards,” the source said.

NAN reports that Obi was billed to be in the U.S. last week and was scheduled to have a New jersey/New York Townhall but the event was postponed.

The PDP vice-presidential candidate is now rescheduled for the New/Jersey/New York USA Town Hall Meeting at Robert Treat Best Western Hotel, New Jersey on Monday, January 21.

The clarification from the embassy came as online reports said Atiku has either landed in the US or has taken off from Nigeria to address the US Chamber of Commerce on Friday, from 2:30pm to 4pm local time.

The Cable claimed that Atiku secretly flew out from Lagos on Wednesday night with most of his aides and associates taken unawares.

He was scheduled to be in Ogun state on Thursday morning but the event was cancelled, it said.

Atiku was said to have been issued last December with a US visa for the first time in 13 years. The visa was reportedly facilitated by his former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, a former foe, turned campaign endorser.

But reports said Atiku sensed the visa could be a trap by the Americans and thus asked for guarantee from the US government that he would not be arrested over a case of money laundering, for which there were reports of a sealed indictment by the US Justice Department.

In another case, former congressman William Jefferson was jailed for 13 years for accepting a bribe from an investor, Lori Mody, who was wearing a wire. Jefferson told the investor that he would need to give then Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar $500,000 “as a motivating factor” to make sure the company obtained contracts for iGate and Mody’s company in Nigeria.

But Daily Trust, quoting Atiku’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Paul Ibe debunked the report of Atiku travelling to the United States.

Ibe told Daily Trust via a telephone chat Thursday afternoon that online reports which stated that Atiku had travelled to the US were a figment of the imagination of the authors.

“You know what the social media can do. You know the social media for what they are now. It is not true. His Excellency hasn’t gone anywhere,” he said.

For a marriage that was shut down for 12 years, many wondered how a reconciliation took place.

The actor had in 2017 confirmed that he was separated from his wife after 12 years of being together.

For Nollywood actor, Bolanle Ninalowo, who reconciled with his wife, Bunmi, a resident of Atlanta in the USA, life had to continue with his wife and mother of two kids.

According to a source, Bolanle, who had become highly sought after in the industry, was also getting tired of being a playboy to many of the ladies he worked with.

The source told Kemi Ashefon, “Initially, he must have enjoyed the attention he was getting from all the ladies in and out of the industry. He was alleged to have warmed many of their beds but never committed himself to anyone for marriage.
“He must have reasoned that the ilk of Odunlade Adekola and Femi Adebayo Salami, who are also highly sought after are happily married and their career weren’t affected.

His marriage to Bunmi would have lasted but the wife was said to have deserted him when he started having challenges after he didn’t fare well in his music career. It was after he could not cope with life in the US as a failed music artiste that he returned to Nigeria and joined Nollywood.

That was a goldmine for him and he became a star. That they are reconciled now was an intervention from family and friends who advised that he stuck to his wife and not have kids from too many women.

In the interview with Genvieve magazine, Ninalowo disclosed how he took his wife to United States of America and married her on paper hoping that he will officially marry her sometime later but things didn’t go according to plans.

He said in 2017, “I am separated from the mother of my kids. I have an 11-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy from her and they live in Atlanta.
“We met here in Nigeria when I visited 12 years ago. I took her, with me, to the States and filed for her (married her on paper) with the hope to someday get married officially, but things took the wrong turn. So, for now I am married to my hustle.”

But things are rosy between the two now as they have been uploading photos of being together on Instagram.
However, in a new post on Instagram, his wife, Bunmi wrote, “#OlowooriAdufe. Thank God for grace”.

Reacting to the post which sparked off speculation that he has reconciled with his wife late in 2018, Ninalowo wrote, “Thank you for hanging on. So sorry for everything. I only knew that if God be for me, then the end will surely justify the means. Mabinu aya mi”.

Bunmi also shared a throwback photo of both of them and captioned it, “Throwback to when i was just 23 and he was 24 Heck we thot we knew it all and no one could tell us a damn thing. Omobolanle”.

There was a big celebration at the police office after a notorious Boko Haram Commander was arrested yesterday in Lagos. Top police officers and their subordinates popped bottles of champagne to rejoice over the arrest of the suspect, Abdulmalik Umar, said to have been responsible for the deaths of more than 200 people.

According to police report, the suspect said to be the gang-leader which allegedly killed seven police officers at Galadimawa roundabout, some police officers in Lugbe and Gwagwalada areas in Abuja as well as leading several bank robberies in Ondo, Edo and other southern states.

It was gathered that 39-year-old Umar was the grand commander of the attack and rescue operations of the Prison in Niger State early this year where he lost one of his eyes during the operation which led to the escape of over 100 prisoners.

Umar, was arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IG) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) around Mowe at a nurse’s house where he was receiving treatment for the bullet wounds he sustained during a recent gun battle with the police in Abuja.

He had fled Abuja three weeks ago when some of his gang members were apprehended.

He was arrested along with four of his Gang members as the police recovered 4 AK-47 rifles and hundreds of ammunition.
