There is a big difference between an action movie star and great character actor, the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger,Sylvester Stallone,Jackie Chan,Vin diesel give great box office returns but are not character actors, the great actors include Robert Deniro,Al Pacino ,Denzel Washington ,Anthony Hopkins,Jack Nicholson,Daniel Day Lewis,Sean Penn and Rusell Crowe may not have sold out Theatres but are regarded as the best in the business due to their intense performances in dramatic roles. Now as for Will Smith he is mainly an action star but has shown capacity for great dramatic roles like in ALI and The Pursuit of Happyness but to compare him with Denzel as an actor is ridiculous, Performances in Malcolm X , Glory ,The Hurricane,Siege,Training Day, Remember the Titans,American Gangster,Crimson tide cannot be matched. If your the type of person that goesto the movies for sheer entertainment you will defintely love Will smith more, but if you love movies for their artistic content and ability to make you think and for challenging character portrayals i'd say Denzel is way on top.
I'm quoting Kev-d's post because sums up why Will Smith should never be compared to Denzel Washington. By the way, I love how you grouped the actors . . Character Actors and Entertainment Actors. It's unfortunate they have to use the word Actor for the latter group but can you do, eh? Thanks. |
chiogo:Goodness! I didn't think the underlining meaning of my analogy will be this difficult to understand. Obviously, you'd rather see it a certain way, that's why you insist on bringing philandering men into it. So let's just agree to disagree on that since there is nothing I can say or do to make you see where I was going with it. Re: Movie Choices. Alright I don't know how much you know about movie making but rarely do screenwriters write with a particular actor in mind. This is why they have casting sessions. Do you think anyone is holding a gun to an actor's head forcing him to act a movie? You do know they have the option of turning down scripts and by doing so, they are asserting their right to CHOOSE. . . hence their Movie Choices. Denzel Washington turned an offer to play Martin Luther King. Will Smith Turned down Superman and Neo in The Matrix. Ben Affleck turned down Brokeback Mountain Halle Berry turned down Gigli (thank heavens for that) Angelina Jolie turned down Charlie's Angels Al Pacino Turned down Pretty Woman. I can go on and on but I'm sure you get the point. . . Actors have choices! So when I say his choice in movies, I mean HIS choice in movies because HE makes the final decision (except he owes money to the Mob, then they make the decision) What you wrote here They're used to their roles is known as typecasting. On the What actors DREAD most list, Typecasting is #2. After Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio got many offers to play romantic leading man, he turned them down because he didn't want to be typecasted. Jennifer Aniston barely has a movie career because people can't stop seeing her as Rachel Green from friends. The Seinfeld Gang can't escape their Seinfeld characters (well Julia Louis seems to have gotten over the curse, I hear her new sitcom is good) Matt Damon did the Bourne Identity movies to break away from the sensitive leading man role people were starting to identify him with. Again, I can go on and on but I have faith you get my point. Typecasting is BAD and most actors. . . except Will Smith of course, will do anything to break away from it by acting against type. What's the point of calling yourself an actor is you can't be versatile ![]() Oh #1 on the list - Not getting movie offers. |
Yes, Yes don't derail the thread or you'll have us kicked out. ![]() Daimonds you say. . . hmmm, they are a girl's best friend. Okay why not. |
CH3COO: Gamine:ROTFLMAO! You guys are killing me! Ain't love grand? ![]() |
ayinba1:Lmao! I've tried but when I get to the part of describing what they feel. . . "oh butterfly in her stomach, his heart stopped when he saw her" I find myself going "Oh for the love of God!" or "give me a freaking break. Jeez!" So you see, it's hopeless. ![]() CH3COO:Roses? Ughh! Gift Basket - Hmmm, will it come with a bottle of arsenic and a Jar of Bromine? If yes. . . then hold the phones coz I'm off to the drawing board or in this case writing board. |
ANYTHING FOR LOVE. “Where were you last night?” Every morning for the past two months I ask the same questions and get the same response. . . Silence. It didn’t matter really, I knew the answer , the reddish brown stain on his rumpled clothes gave him away. He had gone to her. Tina. Things changed when she came into our lives. We went from fun loving couple to strangers walking on egg shells. I tried to be understanding and patient but it was hard having to work things. . . our plans, around Tina. She was so needy, so fragile and Joshua was happy to be her knight in Shinning amour. I couldn’t help the hate I felt. . . not just for her but for him also. He was supposed to be mine, all mine, didn’t he know that? I wanted to say something, something that will make him see me again, see the woman he had married. My mouth opened and the words came out “I. . . I made you breakfast” Hate-filled eyes turn to me. My heart broke. “Joshua, please, let’s go back to how it was.” I begged clutching his arm in both hands “Please, Forget about her” “I can’t!” he yelled , pulling away from me. “You can. I can help you” “I can’t. . . ” he paused and cleared his throat “I can’t do this anymore. . .” “No! Don‘t say it” I begged “I can’t pretend there’s something, when there is nothing” he continued “ Please stop” “Every night I go to her, I know it’s not right. . . believe me, I do. I know I should be home with my wife yet I sit there.” He walked to the bar and grabbed a bottle of scotch, twisted the cap and drank straight from it. He stopped, wiped his mouth and looked at me. “Do you know why?" he spat "I can’t stand to be near you. God, I hate you. I hate you for what you did to us. I hate you for making have to go there” “I did it for us” I cried “We were dying. . . our love was dying” “You killed our daughter, Sandra” he yelled angrily “You killed Tina. Instead of sleeping upstairs, our daughter lays in grave and I have to sit with her because she shouldn’t be alone. . . . she’s only a baby. She's. . . only. . . a. . . baby” The sound of his sobs fill the room. Disclaimer - This a product of my imagination and bears no resemblence to anyone living or dead. . . at least no one I know. Just wanted to put it out there ![]() |
@ Topic Off with their heads, I say! |
jummiee:Hi, Thank you and I'd be honored to work what with you too. Truthfully I'd be honored to work with anyone from Nairaland, like you said in your post, we have so many amazing writers, it does the heart good to see. This is gonna sound silly but sometimes, I honestly can't tell what my genre is. . . lol. Reading-wise, I go for suspense and Psychological thrillers but writing. . . all I know is I don't or is it can't do romance and love. ![]() |
chiogo:Okay, I'd suggest you read my post again because there seems to be a misunderstanding. No mention of real or fake world with regards to Will Smith and Denzel Washington, only in my analogy with Monty and Joey. I said DW puts himself out there. . . and by that, I meant he takes risks with his movie choices. Will Smith has admitted that he is afraid to be that bold with his choices. He knows action movies work for him and he would rather stick with it. If that doesn't say how unsure he is about himself, I don't know what does. Secondly, My analogy has nothing to do with the bible or religion, so reading it in that context takes us to another level. I'd rather you look at it in the context of. . . Taking up a challenge, instead of running scared. It's easy for Monty to remain celibate because there's no challenge but how does he know what he is capable of doing or being? Everytime Joey overcomes an obstacle, it makes him stronger, It builds something in him. I also would like to add. . . again that I like Will Smith, I think he is a good actor. I just don't think he should becompared to Denzel Washington. Compare Will Smith to Jamie Fox, they both have similar background career wise. I'll end this by quoting Mohammed Ali. . . "It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself." I find it rather ironic, that one of the few times Will Smith ventured out of his safe cocoon, he played a guy who never backed down from challenges. |
jummiee:I second this post!! |
@ CH3COO Lmao. . . I would consider it but you have Halle Berry. I've made it a policy to be the only crazy black chick in a human sandwich. When you drop Halle, have your people call my people and we'll see if we can come up with recipes. Oh just a heads up. . . I like mine hot and spicy. |
I'll have me a Christian Bale & Collin Firth Sandwich, with a dash of Angelina Jolie spinkled on top and on the side. Oh heck, just dip the entire sandwich in Angelina Jolie, thanks much. Naija Celebrities I'll give an arm and a leg to meet are OLU JACOBS and JOKE SILVER. . . Separately because I don't think my brain will function well if I meet them together . . .that's how much I am in awe of them. RMD was on my list but then I saw him in Jeans Overalls. . . not the long ones, the shorts, just a few inches below the knee, shorts. I threw up in mouth, washed up and crossed him off my list. There are just some clothes a man should never wear and Jeans overalls is one one of them. |
Jeebus!!! I stumbled on this thread late last night and couldn't stop reading. . . it was that good. My God! We've got so many wonderful writers here, it makes me all goose bumpy. Thanks for sharing, it all made for a nice read. |
CH3COO: ![]() |
KarmaMod:JEEBUS! NO WAY!!!!! I swear to God, I am so FREAKING SLOW!!! How did I not know it was you?? You have to tell me. . . what do you do? LOL I'll try to cut the sacarsm down but sometimes. . . it's hard not to take a shot, some people make it so easy!! |
Funny! ![]() |
CH3COO:Did I forget to add. . . DW is Greater? I did! Oops! SeanT21:Oh? Well then I must have misunderstood when you dismissed Don Cheadle as a good actor by asking how much his movie grossed. Mah Bad! I do that sometimes. Gamine:LMAO! GU is beautiful. . . for awhile there, I had high hopes that she'd go mainstream. Then it happened! I saw Daddy's Little Girls. . . scratch that, I was the preview to Daddy's Little Girl. I almost wept as I had a moment of silence for a career cut short by Tyler Perry Gah! can't stand him. |
Poster's Issue Two guys and A girl Poster is one of the guys, the other is his shy friend. Friend liked a girl but was too shy to ask her out. So poster helped set things in motion without the girl knowing what he was doing. The relationship worked, poster was happy for his friend. . . Until he got a call from his friend informing him the girl said poster called her to ask her out. Poster is shocked because he doesn't even know the girl's #. She is also well known in the area and many people have her number. He thought confronting her will make it difficult for her to lie so boldly but she didn't budged. He asked her what number he supposedly called from and she said it was private. All of this in front of his friend and even though poster finds the incident funny, he's confused as to why she'd do that to him. And that's it. @ Topic Don't make an issue of it, I suspect she's trying to come between you and your friend. . . Some girls are like that, just want to rid their boyfriends of their friends. You making a big deal out of it will be playing into her hands. Don't give her ammo to use against you, let it go. The truth will out. . . It always does. I apologise for abusing your thread and adding nothing to the topic earlier. It was rude and completely out of line. |
My dad thinks I should. . .
Honestly, some people have all the luck. . . with love, with life, with parents. My daddy would have slapped me, ehn that kiss will turned to Hiss fast fast "No daddy, I said hiss, hiss, hiss, you know like a snake hisss and I only feel bad coz. . . you know, you taught me hissing is rude" Laugh Nervously "Ha, daddy you're getting old oh. . . Kiss ke? What's that sef" @ Post Honestly, I see nothing wrong. Let sleeping dogs lie. . . It's not like it's gonna happen again, right? Riiight? |
CH3COO:There's a 3rd alternative. . . Locked! Gah! I just had my thread locked! Can't do anything now even if I wanted to. Familiar? @ Post Be Strong, Take heart Remember God dey! |
Cristalz:I'm open to correcting any error in my report. What. . . what was the error in my report? @ Post Yes. . . good . . .whatever he said. |

Jakumo:Rotflmao! Yeah! Go! Go! Senator. Smart! Our Exorcist in Charge! |
redsun:You are so right! Went to Nigeria in 2005 and was shocked to see people in those face me I face you apartments using generators. Even though the gens were on the balcony, it didn't help much because they had like 10-12 gens lined up. My only concern back then was the noise pollution. . . didn't even put the fumes into account. It's just a horrible situation. |
This is very sad. Waiting for someone to use this as talking point for why generator should be banned. |
Pataki:Rotflmao! Now that's how you do it . . . errr. . . I mean what? How dare she? Does she not know he is man? Na wa oh, times are really changing. It's all in God's hands now. |
StephenP:((CLAPING)))) Hmmm! Oh yeah! He went like NIKE and Just did it. . . Twwwwwaaaa! on her face! StephenP:That's what I been talkin' about! StephenP:That's. . . that's what I said! StephenP:I say if her daddy tries to talk some smack, go ahead slap him too. Shooo! These days a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, how's he gonna prove he's a man if he can't give his girlfriend a little blackeye? In the old days, it used to be you send your girfriend/wife to the ER and you get your Man Badge but things have changes. . . they made it easy and only a wannabe man won't do what he got to do, ya know. |
Richguys:LOL . . . okay. Women - 2 (I'll give you Iyabo Obansanjo) Men - 8541247 this year alone. I repeat my statement. . . Well, one thing we can be sure of is they can't do worse than the men. So yeah, I say let 'em have a go at it. |
CH3COO:ROTFLMAO What? You said details. . . didn't ya? I'm not disputing Will Smith is a great actor. Errr. . . I guess that's it. ![]() |
SeanT21:Hey SeanT21. . . been awhile. Good to see ya again. ![]() Regina, Gabriella, Katherine & Jada all have movies which grossed a lot, a lot a lot at the box office. Well, according to someone. . . box office is the measure of heavyweightness. So I figure why not throw 'em in there with the Fondas and the Roberts and the Streeps. |
