TV/MoviesRe: Denzel Washington Vs. Will Smith (Poll) by Sisikill(op): 10:59pm On Jul 19, 2008
There is a big difference between an action movie star and  great character actor, the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger,Sylvester Stallone,Jackie Chan,Vin diesel give great box office returns but are not character actors, the great actors include Robert Deniro,Al Pacino ,Denzel Washington ,Anthony Hopkins,Jack Nicholson,Daniel Day Lewis,Sean Penn and Rusell Crowe may not have sold out Theatres but are regarded as the best in the business due to their intense performances in dramatic roles.

Now as for Will Smith he is mainly an action star but has shown capacity for great dramatic roles like in ALI and The Pursuit of Happyness but to compare him with Denzel as an actor is ridiculous, Performances in Malcolm X , Glory ,The Hurricane,Siege,Training Day, Remember the Titans,American Gangster,Crimson tide cannot be matched.

If your the type of person that goesto the movies for sheer entertainment you will defintely love Will smith more, but if you love movies for their artistic content and ability to make you think and for  challenging character portrayals i'd say Denzel is way on top.
I'm quoting Kev-d's post because sums up why Will Smith should never be compared to Denzel Washington.

By the way, I love how you grouped the actors . . Character Actors and Entertainment Actors. It's unfortunate they have to use the word Actor for the latter group but can you do, eh?

Thanks.

Right, and like i mentioned earlier, i didn't want to bring religion into it either but either way you look at it, the words apply. Ok, in real life, if one has a friend or someone in their life that stops them from achieving their goals, what do you do?? Say bye to the friend and move on with your life. Same theory as the one i took from the bible.

It's not really easy for Monty to remain celibate just because he moved to the mountains or whatever. For one who is a philanderer, it is a hard decision to make to move to a zone where you know you won't be able to get sex anymore. That itself, is a challenge - the decision to move from one's comfort zone.

I don't really get what you mean by their movie choices. Last time i checked, all these actors have their movies written for 'em. so, what movie choices are we talkin about here?? I def. agree that Denzel is a better actor but by a very thin line. For one, he's older and therefore, he is given mature roles and he's been playing that role since forever. I'm sure either of them would do well in other roles but it'd be less interesting to watch because the audience won't be used to their new characters. Will smith does not play those roles because he's immature and Denzel doesn't play those roles because he's so smart - They're used to their roles, point blank.
Goodness!

I didn't think the underlining meaning of my analogy will be this difficult to understand. Obviously, you'd rather see it a certain way, that's why you insist on bringing philandering men into it.  So let's just agree to disagree on that since there is nothing I can say or do to make you see where I was going with it.

Re: Movie Choices.
Alright I don't know how much you know about movie making but rarely do screenwriters write with a particular actor in mind. This is why they have casting sessions. Do you think anyone is holding a gun to an actor's head forcing him to act a movie? You do know they have the option of turning down scripts and by doing so, they are asserting their right to CHOOSE. . . hence their Movie Choices.

Denzel Washington turned an offer to play Martin Luther King.

Will Smith Turned down Superman and Neo in The Matrix.

Ben Affleck turned down Brokeback Mountain

Halle Berry turned down Gigli (thank heavens for that)

Angelina Jolie turned down Charlie's Angels

Al Pacino Turned down Pretty Woman.

I can go on and on but I'm sure you get the point. . . Actors have choices!

So when I say his choice in movies, I mean HIS choice in movies because HE makes the final decision (except he owes money to the Mob, then they make the decision)

What you wrote here They're used to their roles is known as typecasting. On the What actors DREAD most list, Typecasting is #2.

After Titanic, Leonardo DiCaprio got many offers to play romantic leading man, he turned them down because he didn't want to be typecasted.

Jennifer Aniston barely has a movie career because people can't stop seeing her as Rachel Green from friends.

The Seinfeld Gang can't escape their Seinfeld characters (well Julia Louis seems to have gotten over the curse, I hear her new sitcom is good)

Matt Damon did the Bourne Identity movies to break away from the sensitive leading man role people were starting to identify him with.

Again, I can go on and on but I have faith you get my point. Typecasting is BAD and most actors. . . except Will Smith of course,  will do anything to break away from it by acting against type. What's the point of calling yourself an actor is you can't be versatile huh

Oh #1 on the list - Not getting movie offers.

ANYTHING FOR LOVE.

“Where were you last night?”
Every morning for the past two months I ask the same questions and get the same response. . . Silence. It didn’t matter really, I knew the answer , the reddish brown stain on his rumpled clothes gave him away. He had gone to her.

Tina.

Things changed when she came into our lives. We went from fun loving couple to strangers walking on egg shells. I tried to be understanding and patient but it was hard having to work things. . . our plans, around Tina. She was so needy, so fragile and Joshua was happy to be her knight in Shinning amour. I couldn’t help the hate I felt. . . not just for her but for him also. He was supposed to be mine, all mine, didn’t he know that?

I wanted to say something, something that will make him see me again, see the woman he had married.

My mouth opened and the words came out

“I. . . I made you breakfast”

Hate-filled eyes turn to me. My heart broke.

“Joshua,  please, let’s go back to how it was.” I begged clutching his arm in both hands “Please, Forget about her”

“I can’t!” he yelled , pulling away from me.

“You can. I can help you”

“I can’t. . . ” he paused and cleared his throat “I can’t do this anymore. . .”

“No! Don‘t say it” I begged

“I can’t pretend there’s something, when there is nothing” he continued

“ Please stop”

“Every night I go to her, I know it’s not right. . . believe me, I do. I know I should be home with my wife yet I sit there.”

He walked to the bar and grabbed a bottle of scotch, twisted the cap and drank straight from it. He stopped, wiped his mouth and looked at me.

“Do you know why?" he spat  "I can’t stand to be near you. God, I hate you. I hate you for what you did to us. I hate you for making have to go there

“I did it for us” I cried “We were dying. . . our love was dying”

“You killed our daughter, Sandra” he yelled angrily “You killed Tina. Instead of sleeping upstairs, our daughter lays in grave and I have to sit with her because she shouldn’t be alone. . . . she’s only a baby. She's. . . only. . . a. . .  baby”

The sound of his sobs fill the room.

Hi,
Thank you and I'd be honored to work what with you too. Truthfully I'd be honored to work with anyone from Nairaland, like you said in your post, we have so many amazing writers, it does the heart good to see.

This is gonna sound silly but sometimes, I honestly can't tell what my genre is. . . lol. Reading-wise, I go for suspense and Psychological thrillers but writing. . . all I know is I don't or is it can't do romance and love.  grin

@Sisikill, you tried with your "Joey and monty" analogy but your conclusion isn't convincing enough. I would personally admire Monty
who moved to where there'd be no temptation. Let's be honest here, from your analysis, Joey wouldn't make it in the real world. How many men(philanderous ones) go through such temptations and resist for a long period of time??

I don't want to bring religion into this Cuz I'm not all that religious myself. I rarely read the bible but i remember some verse in the bible which says
that "If one of your eyes is going to hinder you from entering the kingdom, then pluck it off". Just like Monty, he knew the real world would continue to tempt him to have sex so he decided to move. I don't see anything wrong in that.

Anywayz, we all agree Denzel is the better actor but i don't understand what you meant by him sticking it out in the real world because he was sure of himself. What makes you think Will didn't stick it out in the real world or does he live in a fake world??
Okay, I'd suggest you read my post again because there seems to be a misunderstanding. No mention of real or fake world with regards to Will Smith and Denzel Washington, only in my analogy with Monty and Joey. I said DW puts himself out there. . . and by that, I meant he takes risks with his movie choices. Will Smith has admitted that he is afraid to be that bold with his choices. He knows action movies work for him and he would rather stick with it. If that doesn't say how unsure he is about himself, I don't know what does.

Secondly, My analogy has nothing to do with the bible or religion, so reading it in that context takes us to another level. I'd rather you look at it in the context of. . . Taking up a challenge, instead of running scared. It's easy for Monty to remain celibate because there's no challenge but how does he know what he is capable of doing or being? Everytime Joey overcomes an obstacle, it makes him stronger, It builds something in him.

I also would like to add. . . again that I like Will Smith, I think he is a good actor. I just don't think he should becompared to Denzel Washington. Compare Will Smith to Jamie Fox, they both have similar background career wise.

I'll end this by quoting Mohammed Ali. . . "It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself." I find it rather ironic, that one of the few times Will Smith ventured out of his safe cocoon, he played a guy who never backed down from challenges.

@ all, u guys did a good job,
this was actually a writing exercise in a book on creative writing. There were several writing exercises in the book, and they actually gave me a lot of ideas, i have written five stories.

i think nairaland has a lot of talent, was thinking that nairalanders ( both published and aspiring writers) should come together to form different writers clubs based on their genre of interest. These groups could work together on book projects like a collection of short stories/ collection of poems, the purpose of which is to get their work published at the end of the day.

What do u guys think?

Poster's Issue

Two guys and A girl

Poster is one of the guys, the other is his shy friend.

Friend liked a girl but was too shy to ask her out. So poster helped set things in motion without the girl knowing what he was doing.

The relationship worked, poster was happy for his friend. . . Until he got a call from his friend informing him the girl said poster called her to ask her out.

Poster is shocked because he doesn't even know the girl's #. She is also well known in the area and many people have her number.

He thought confronting her will make it difficult for her to lie so boldly but she didn't budged.

He asked her what number he supposedly called from and she said it was private.

All of this in front of his friend and even though poster finds the incident funny, he's confused as to why she'd do that to him.

And that's it.
