CultureRe: Abeokuta: A Name, An Irony by skillip(m): 12:49pm On Jan 13, 2016
wolewole200:
ABEOKUTA : A name ; an irony.

By 2030, it will be two hundred years since Abeokuta was founded and so named by the Egbas who took refuge under the Olumo rock. Thus, the name Abeokuta literally meaning "Under the Rock" was adopted after they were asked where they lived. Today however, the story has somehow changed, indigenes, citizens and residents do not live "under" the rock, but rather on it.

I have often found it hilarious, that names of certain areas or junctions in Abeokuta, when translated literally would make you laugh, wonder or even sometimes shocked. Please note that this piece is just a fiction of my writer's imagination and should not be in anyway misconstrued as deregatory but a source of comic relief (I am from Abeokuta myself ).

Let's begin our journey from Iyana Mortuary, haba! That's Mortuary junction, guess you may not want to go where it leads. Others are:

Itoku - Cemetery / court of the dead
Ago-oko - Camp of stones (stone throwers)
Ago-ika - Camp of the wicked
Ago-odo - Camp of the dullard
Ago-iba - Camp of Malaria
Saje - come and become a witch
Adigbe - place of constipation
Kugba - offered to death
Mawuko - Don't cough
Adatan - Cutlass have finished
Kolobo, kotopo - small, petite, roundish
Oke-efon - Hill of the buffalo
Onikoko - cocoyam seller
Alabata- We lick sandals
Alamala - Amala seller
Ita ika - Frontage of the wicked
Kuto - Death urinates
Totoro - so narrow
Enu gada - Foot of the bridge
Apakila - The hill of Kila
Amolaso - Our clothes are clean
Oke ilewo - The hill of prosperity

Wow! Terrific names, don't you agree?
Probably that's why the city has produced and is still producing leading leaders in the Nation. The likes of ex-President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Chief Ernest Sonekan, June 12 hero, Chief MKO Abiola, Rev and Chief mrs Ransome Kuti, Fela and his siblings, Chief Ebenezer Obey, Segun Odegbami et al and my wonderful self.

Abeokuta, on the rock we stand.

#wolewole
@Op, nice one you got there but not all the interpretations you gave are correct.
Ago-odo - Camp of youths, odo means youth. Even others up are not really correct you just gave a vague/general meaning to it. If you do your research well even from the elders in Abeokuta you will get a different meaning to some NOT all you put up. Enjoy!

CareerTips For Job search In 2016 by skillip(op):
Hello everyone, I will like to share some of the tips that could be of great benefits to those in search of a job in this New year. I will be writing based on my experience.

1. Internship :Even before i gained admission i just knew i will not join the "crowd" writing aptitude test back and forth, mind you not that i was not qualified, neither am i against such. This was what i did. Since i knew the career path i wanted to follow i looked for a small firm that will most likely need my services, I indeed got one. Due to the fact that it was a small place i was able to learn fast, proved myself and within a short time i was offered full employment. When i started as an intern my boss was magnanimous enough to offer me only transportation, which i gladly accepted because i can not buy experience sitting at home complaining that 'how do this company's expect me to have such years of experience?".
So how can you get an internship placement? you can make a list of those small companies around you, send an email or visit the office in person, there is no guarantee you will be accepted but don'tlose hope, keep trying.

2. Networking: All the places i have ever worked till now has always been through networking, by this i mean i get to meet people within my sphere of influence relate with them, share my thoughts and learn from them as well, knowing that these people are within reach i easily get referrals for jobs, interview etc. So try and join perhaps a professional networking group like Linkedin and a host of others, make friends with people you desire to learn from or become.

3. Training: One of the few ways i believe you can get a job is through training, you get to meet people from different industry who may be of help or even refer you to some other organization in need of people. I should also add that when you go for training do not be passive, participate in class, ask questions, get involve in group exercise and any other assignment that is expected of you.
What if you desire to go for training and you do not have the required training fee? i will advise that you write a strongly worded letter to the trainers stating your reason for wanting to attend and the benefits you will derive from the training. you can as well visit in person to negotiate based on the amount you have at hand.

4. Communication: Most of the things we desire even jobs are within our reach, we just often do miss it because we lack basic communication skills. During my youth service days, i was one of the highest paid corps members, how did i achieve that? I met an indigene who i was able to engage in a conversation and we were both able to strike a cord, when i told him about my inability to get a job in the town, he quickly directed me to where there was a vacancy waiting to be filled and that was how i got the job. What i am trying to say in essence is that we should know how and when we make request if we need one.
Indeed, there are many more ways but this ones readily comes to mind.
Lastly, for those of us who believe in the God factor let him direct and help you as you play your own path first. I pray that this 2016 for the job seeker and the ones who desire a better job, this year will be the year for better things. Cheers and Happy New year once again!!!!!!

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Pains Of A Recruiter / HR Mgr by skillip(m): 11:08am On Oct 30, 2015
@Op, nice write up you have written. However, I have some observations to make. I think after the summary your work experience comes next, I don't have time to be looking at interest etc first, because I have too many Cv's to peruse and no time.
I will prefere this format, Summary, work experience and accomplishment just beneath each job/place you worked, skills follow etc.
Like I said it's just my opinion, I just look for what you have done first, achievments/accomplishment, matching skills etc.
Keep it up.
FamilyRe: My Husband Is Ashamed To Ask Our Family Friend For Financial Help by skillip(m): 3:27pm On Oct 18, 2015
@Op, obviously your husband is not lazy, his business just suffered a set back and indeed nobody is immuned from things like this no matter how calculating we are.
Talk to your husband and know exactly why he his declining to ask for assistance from your neighbour, explore other options and if non, I think your husband should be humble enough to ask, forget ego abeg. It's either a yes or no.
I pray things get better for you guys again,no man wants to be liabilty or. Begger.

Strange thing is, he could be that man across my street I bump into everyday....I know that Batman is Bruce Wayne, but I don't know who LAGBAJA is, or where he is now!
@Op just as Batman is Bruce Wayne, so is Lagbaja also known as Bisade Ologunde. No doubt he's fine but chilling, perhaps he's in the studio.

Hope this helps if at all. All the best!
