Crimes like these should start being made punishable with huge fines or jail time. If you think your electricity runs out too fast when you recharge then regulate what you use better. Nigerians hate paying for stuff, it is like kryptonite to them. But they will be the first to complain when what they are not ready to pay for is taken away. Which is why, even with all the noise being made by Ajaero, I am happy power is going private. Private companies will be more inclined to take this theft seriously and move to prosecute accordingly as a warning to others because this is lost revenue.

And please let us do away with the myth that this is only being commited by "poor people". Nigerians are just so accustomed to indiscipline, and someone doig this will be seen as a "wise/sharp guy". Please, let us not develop into India!

Honestly speaking I don't even know if I am patient enough for this thing to go through the legislature in a drawn out process. State governments should be working towards more regional integration, nothing I know of stops states from legislating in such a manner. BRACED (Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Edo, Delta) should also start puting a bit more political muscle into that acronym and backing up the sentiment with integrated interstate projects and budgeting for common causes. We need government closer to the people and states will benefit from working together towards common aims. Hopefully one day we can start talking about reducing the number of states we have to even begin with.

If this is what I think jit is then I believe we should all endevour to support it. If this means six geopolitical entities that takes away power from the centre and allows regions more closely manage their affairs, then I am STRONGLY for this and believe this should get more hype than it currently does. Why is this not everywhere, I never knew they were even considering this. Would probably need more information on the actual proposal.

1. No one wants to experience another civil war again

2. Nigeria market favours some of us that are traders especially hausas, yorubas and igbos

3. A country like niger-delta would be invaded by neigbouring countries eg baifra, cameroon etc

4. Each country would be the laughing stock of the world as our economies would mean nothing

5. Too much investment by other Nigerians in states/cities like Abuja and Lagos. I don't think they are ready to lose that !

If the poster had to resort to fear mongering to make a case for staying together, then you know what, we might as well start seriously considering the alternatives right now. How utterly messed up, to think that the best excuse a person can put forward for a country staying together is fear of civil war, fear of being a laughing stock, and loss of investment. The structure of this country is not working. Do you really understand this at all or are you SO focused on oil and oil money that you cannot comprehend this? Hmm. I like this. This is good and healthy for our democracy and I hope they can go some way with it. But the president has immunity and the issue being addressed is what the legislative should be pressuring the executive on, these are serious oversight duties. All this focus on budget implementation to me sounds too much like 'release money for contract', and unfortunately I have lost a lot of confidence in the house and that is how I see their current focus. Unfortunately the part in bold is rarely emphasized enough. Sometimes it seems Nigerians as a people don't know what they want or what their opinion on something is, but are going to complain about it anyway. It can be quite irritating.

It is disappointing that this is the way this thread has gone because honestly, there is some truth to what he is saying. The title of the thread is misleading. After reading the article myself it seems the main point being made is the need to crosscheck publications with facts and some kind of logical backing so we don't keep reading nonsense.

It is in our interest that the media obtains and maintains some form of integrity because many of us rely on what has been published to form an opinion. And what I find very amusing, is that some of us are willing to question our leaders (and rightly so), but sometimes and somehow have this view of the media as being altruistic and without an agenda. The media can be a dangerous thing in the hands of the wrong people. And surely, it is in our interest that the media maintains a certain standard, or that at least we are able to know propaganda when we see it and sift out whatever truth there is.

This is bigger than David Mark. I for one am tired of reading all this exposes with ambiguous sources. All the 'he said, she said' trite. Our media standards still have a way to go. And adding the advent of social media to the fray, there is something to consider in all of this. How many of these BB junk messages do people receive of 'Boko haram is poisoning our water', 'There is a bomb in this place' and so on that spread like wild fire, sow seeds of discord, are taken to heart, and end up leading to actions that have implications beyond the web have we seen?

We need more local content laws in Nigeria. For a heavily import based economy we suffer from enough capital flight as it is. Laws should be drafted to confine the government (all arms and at all levels down to local governments) to source made in Nigeria as a first prefrence for everything it needs - within a reasonable framework. National House of Assembly, these are the kind of progressive laws you should be working on to change the system!

Right now, as things stand right now, how much power do you think Lagos would need to run? How much power do you think a city like say . . . London uses? Do that research and consider that that city has huge industries, a more affluent population that uses more appliances at home, a well developed and integrated transport infrastructure that uses power as well, power to climatise and power public spaces, the list goes on. And how many of these commitments does Lagos have to meet again? Please, we are not all toddlers here so sell that nonsesne else where. How much power does Lagos need to run right now if 3000MW is not enough? Laughable.

Pg 4 of your source which references the Lagos state goverment puts current power demand at 4000MW, and given the reference, I will take that information with a pinch of salt. I think you might have overestimated that state a bit. How many heavy industries are there even in Lagos to begin with? It is more a commerce place.

Good point stating the obvious, yes elements of the national assembly are indeed very corrupt.

But when you look at Friday night you can begin to guess what Saturday will be like. With the people on his side this cannot even be a serious discussion to even be considering, talkless of happening. If Jonathan wants the support of the people then he needs to start delivering. Period.

As far as I can see both executive and legislators are complicit and not performing, and I don't see why any sane person will waste their saliva or effort in protecting or fighting for any of them. Nowadays I look to state governors to get my 'hope fix' about the Nigeria of a country, not the federal government.
Because beyond words and the right sounding promises, Jonathan is yet to show how he is truly different from the rubbish we have had before. He is yet to show he is ready to fight corruption.
