Nice article. Funke is just entertaining and not teaching. A dull kid may never get better by listening to the BBC. Alice Walker is a Pulitzer winning author, but her novel, The Color Purple, was mostly narrated through the ghastly English of the illiterate protagonist. Have you also read Amos Tutuola's The Palmwine Drinkard? (you go see grammar laugh and die from the first sentence) One of the primary functions of literature (movies too) is to entertain.
