Light bill, water bill, etc that is the Koko. You go pay tire!!! It's only in Nigeria I see so much ignorance.

It does not matter. They are poorer than us. By rights the government should subsidise fuel for them, but they won't. Because if they do that, the refinery would lose money, break down, and they would have to import...and again they are poorer than us, and do not even have up to half our forex earnings or even one quarter.

We have tried subsidy for 40 to 50 years. In that time we went from two working refinereis to four damaged and money losing refineries.

The same thing with power supply.

The things cost money. You can call me oppressor, apc supporter, tinubu supporter, but when you do price control and subsidy, the affected industry loses momey, corruption sets in, and production falls drastically.

The only countries that can do some form of subsidy are countries like Saudi that have ten times our revenue, and a small population of less than 50 million people....or countries like Russia that have a diversifed and industrial economy that can charge enough to pay for the subsidy.

Not Nigeria where the federal budget was 22 trillion. Meanwhile if we kept the subsidy as it was at the begining of the year, it would have eaten more than half of our budget. Last year we spent 10 trillion on subsidy. This year it was already 6 trillion by May, and NNPC was still owed 2 trillion naira.

At the end, we would have worsened our already bad deficit.

See the problem.

At the end, the poor suffer more. If subsidy worked...we would have been a rich nation. It has not obvuously. And it is sad the government still keeps it.

Lord knows, I wish we would have kept subsidy. But if we kept fuel at N65 per liter today, subsidy costs would be over N800 per liter up from N35 in 2011 December. The money would come from loans and other parts of the budget.

Amyway, in most people's mind, I am a tinubu supporter for seeing this. When I opposed Tinubu and Buhari in 2012 when they were doing that occupy Nigeria nonsense...because i woke up.
You believe all those figures they quote as subsidy expenses

Yes, but they all have to charge market price first, not 'cheap' prices.

The point of all my argument is that power and petrol are businesses. Government has not been running them as businesses.

When you do price control in the name of helping the poor, and paying subsidy to cover the resultant loss, you drive away investment and cripple the industry. At the end, you get depleted production, corruption, inept management, and so forth...and the poor still don't get helped.

(I mean , if you starve a primary five pupil that was taking first before, him go still take first next time?)

Niger Republic has no fuel subsidy, they are selling fuel at N1000 and above per liter, and they have one working refinery. Yet until this coup they had, they were exporting fuel to three African nations . Nigeria included. Because when you run your industry at a profit, you become a master of the trade. When you run let the poor breathe polices., you get shitty industries.
Niger rupblic don't have enough crude oil

But why should govt not consider the poor, is that not why they are govt

Though it may not be price control and it may be

For me there's nothing wrong in subsidy

So how did the PDP government give us the GSM services you are using to type this?

They allowed the GSM service providers to set their prices which in turn enabled them to give us better services thanks to the high profits they made.

By the way, most Nigerians back then did not like the way MTN and co were charging high prices.

The power sector has been hobbled with price setting by government. From 2017-19, Buhari even prevented them from raising prices

Meanwhile from 2017 to 19 cost of gas was rising. Cost of maintenance was rising. Yet power companies could not raise prices.

Even now they are not allowed to run at a profit.

Result, three of the discos are now run by the banks who loaned them money and one of them is run by government

Oga, if you are running a business and you are not allowed to set your prices, your business will fail. There would be massive corruption and looting. That is why we don't have light, because the government thinks that by setting prices for power, the sector would prosper. That's an oxymoron if there ever was one
When mtn was charging high as a business who want to make excess gain, competitor reduced it

If they increase price people go else where

That's good for consumers

Well the disco thing is controversial

I read ago that their licence has expired, what's happening
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Signs Agreement With Siemens To Increase Grid Capacity To 12,000MW by soccerlite: 12:23pm On Dec 02, 2023
omohayek:
Nothing is going to happen. The fundamental problem with Nigeria's power sector isn't equipment, which is easy enough to buy abroad, but the structure of the market itself. Power distributors (DISCOs) aren't allowed to charge enough to recover their costs, which means they can't afford to pay the generators (GENCOs) for the power they are given to distribute. The end result is that neither the GENCOs nor the DISCOs have the money to do even minimal levels of maintenance.

As much as it may pain certain tribal warriors to hear, Fashola was right that the solution isn't rocket science. The problem is that the solution isn't what the masses want to hear - they need to pay what it costs to generate and distribute power, not what feels "fair" to them thanks to an inflated sense of entitlement stemming from the "oil boom" years of the 1970s when Gowon, Murtala and Obasanjo were dishing out "awuff" in the forms of subsidies of all kinds.

Sadly, Tinubu has been so spooked by the backlash from his attempt to cancel the oil subsidy that he clearly lacks the guts to take any major steps in this direction (how could he, when he doesn't even have the courage to let the CBN fight inflation with higher interest rates). All we can expect for the next 4 years is lots more meaningless agreements like this one, while the fundamental issues are left unaddressed.
So how much should disco charge?

You talk as if you are both an apc govt member and disco owner

Discos a private firm want to charge for poor service, when they are not making gain why are they reluctant to drop the service

Stop giving useless govt alibi

Govt that can't tackle security, free concurrent list manage simple infrastructure
