Tyre Expiry

Road Safety And Aspects Of Tyre Safety

Studies of tyre safety show that maintaining proper tyre pressure, observing tyre and vehicle load limits, and inspecting tyres for cuts, slashes, and other irregularities are the most important things you can do to avoid tyre failure, such as tread separation or blowout and flat tyres. These actions, along with other care and maintenance activities, can also:

Improve vehicle handling
Help protect you and others from avoidable breakdowns
and accidents
Improve fuel economy
Increase the life of your tyres.

Information You Should Know About The Tyres On Your Vehicle

Temperature Resistance

Traction

Tread wear

Max. Load Capacity /tyre

Speed Symbol

Manufacturing Date

Where you can find these information?

Temperature Resistance

These letters indicates a tyre's
resistance to heat.
From highest to lowest, a
tyre's resistance to heat is
graded as "A", "B", or "C".

Symbol Area
A

Hot Area
B

Normal Weather Area
C

Cold Area
Treadwear Number

This number indicates the tyre's wear rate. The higher the treadwear number is, the longer it should take for the tread to wear down. For example, a tyre graded 400 should last twice as long as a tyre graded 200.

Traction

This letter indicates a tyre's ability to stop on wet pavement. A higher graded tyre should allow you to stop your car on wet roads in a shorter distance than a tyre with a lower grade. Traction is graded from highest to lowest as "AA","A", "B", and "C".

Max. Load Capacity & Tyre Speed Symbol

Number indicates the max. load that can be carried by the tyre. Symbol indicates the max. Speed at which a tyre is designed to be driven for extended periods of time.

Manufacturing Date

Tyre Expiry

Vehicle tyres have a 4-year validity period from their Date of Manufacture (DOM). Thereafter, the tyre expires and may burst whilst in use. How to find out whether your tyre has expired? Check for a stamp like this: (*2603*) There is an asterisk at the beginning and at the end of this serial number.
The first two numbers 2 6 will tell which week of the year has it been manufactured.
NB: One year has 52 weeks. The last two numbers represent the year of make. Therefore, *2603* shows that the said tyre is manufactured in the 26th week of the year 2003. *2699* this shows that the tyre is made in the 26th week of 1999.
Check all your tyres for safety purposes. Do not use expired tyres. They are likely to burst (especially when running in hot weather) because the rubber component may have hardened and cracked.

4002 means DOM is Week 40 of year 2002.

None, at the moment but based on research, milan, kewalrams, infinity, bridgestone, dunlop, hankook and michelin tyres, the result has been it is a four year issue. And there are many contributors that have affirmed that it is four years. What else is the reason for his outburst on tyre matter?

Don't take my word for it get caught driving 160 km/hr see waht happens to you you are here talking about radar, in Holland you don't even see the speed cameras they are hidden and there are mobile speed cameras in Poland.U are comparing Nigeria where they have no speed awareness and no respect for Human lives,.Stop this frame of mind its not good for yourselves and other road users,.there is a reason why the road limit was set,,this where judge from deep research and safe braking distance.
I drive inNigeria and I keep my speed at 90-100km/h,there is not much diffrence btw me and those who do 160km/hr highest they get there 10-20 mins b4 me.Is that RISK WORTH TAKING?
it is not worth the risk and you are not in a formula 1 race, but we do take it once in a while. The people who drive porsche carrera are not taking silly risks when they buy the car, they love the thrills and the power of the car, that itself is an addiction which is not permissable for everyone

wao, that was hot. You must have an issue that only you can resolve. All the tyre manufacturers that you claimed talked about no 4 year expiry date, are they based in Nigeria? Oga I said ligally. The only place U can do that and not get arrested in the whole world is the Autobahn.
U guys driving at speed in excess of 100k/hr are the drivers we termed stupid. This is the point where U are bein totally irresponsible. If you drive @100m/hr equivalent to 160km/hr in the UK is and Automatic Ban.
Same across the whole Europe so plz rephrase your statement
You might call it silly but it is worth the risk. If you drive on a european highway, you will be out of place when you roll on 100km. The drivers slow down when they sense that the radar is nearby and continue the high speed once the coast is clear. Do you know the frustration of driving an S600 v 12 at 120km? If you dont, then respect those that paid for a machine and they want them to drive the machine like okada. Even in the country, from ore to benin, it is 28mins for a 99kms strip on a range rover sport.

What is the tyre rating on your tyre now and look for where it is written traction a temperature a. I will suspect a S speed rating on your car. H will do with temperature A

In ur 2nd line tell me what rd you gonna do 240km/hr on ur car? ?.I only know one rd in the whole world.
Brussels to Paris on a Toyota Supra 3.0 Turbo Targa, 260kms, left the balance 20 on the mileage for the Car. 180km on Lokoja Okene road, on an E class 240, was mindful of the speed then because I had H speed rating fitted which means I cannot exceed 210kms. Even at that speed, a small 1.8 Toyota Corolla overtook me, Abuja Keffi road, 180kms, same mercedes, a vboot 300E came and overtook me. I later caught up with him at a petrol station in Lafia just to shake his hands. There was a client of mine with an S class fitted with an H tyre rating. At 200km, a tyre blows out. When he complained, we told him to get W or Y rated tyre since there is no way he can get ZR. He traveled to the UK and came back with ZR tyres. I have been to all the major tyre dealers and they sell the temperature B tyres and the funny thing is that it is common in all these smaller cars. I have also been to the AUTOBAHN but not as a driver, I followed someone on a saturday outing of the BMW CLUB of Zurich and it was a thrilling experience. That is when you know that you are driving an M 5 series. The bottom line is everyone should check the temperature rating on their tyres. The potholes should also be avoided too because there are sharp edges inside that destroys the side wall of the tyre that even a run flat tyre is useless in the hands of our potholes.

Bro Im sorry to say ,I think you are ignorant of waht you are trying to say,
The only difference between Winter and summer tyres are the grips .
During winter teh weather is cold and the compounds harden in these case the winter tyres retains its grip
During summer the tyre compound expands and retains its grip
There was never an issue of tyr bursting its all about stopping and braking distance
In Tropical regions like ours in Nigeria We use all Seasons tyrs as there is no winter here.
In switz when yu get stopped do the police look for the date of manufacture in ur tyres? the check if you are using the right tyres and if this is correct then they check your thread by their markers to see how far worn you are and if its within the legal limit
The issue of 2 tier of tyres in the EU and swiss is more to do with legislature.
Your tyre ratings is peculiar to just your country and no where else
You keep saying speed rating, explain this, waht has speed ratings got to do with your main tyres not sparehuh and how is this applicable in Nigeria where we are always in summer huh huh
hy Good question, the average tyre reading is 205/55/16/98 v. The v is the speed rating which means the car cannot exceed 240kms. In some cars like the sclass, bmw 7 series, their tyres are rated zr which means no speed limit. There are times when you will be driving at 120km and your tyres will be vibrating and you will be thinking it needs wheel bslancing but it is your car warning you to reduce speed cos the tyre on your car is not supposed to be there. If you have a range rover fitted with all season tyres with the speed rating limited at H, there is a tendency that that tyre has a B temperature and it will explode when faced with a 25degrees heat. The frsc stated in their report that over 77% of accídents were caused by burst tyres this year and we all know the intense heat the rains just chased away of recent. The legislation you talked about is because it will be suicidal to drive your car with winter tyres in summer or use summer tyres in winter. Here, it is a way of life. Nigerians import cars from all over the world and the cars arrive with 80% substandard tyres which are not meant for nigerian roads. These are the tyres on our roads and if you check many tire sellers stock, they sell majorly temperature b tyres which like you noted, is not ideal for a country that has only summer season. The best thing frsc should do right now is to prevent burst tyres accidents and we should all support them. It is better than being on the road asking for fire extinguisher

Guy why come online to chat something of false or no meaning? ??go to michelin website and see what they say. I even copied a link on here and yoy are still living I the 70s so in all ur years U dnt know tyres have marker to monitor wear and tear?and what temp are you talking about? Is it not to this resolve they have an inflatable ratio to cater for expansion?
We are not talking about tyre wear. We are talking about the temperature rating of a tyre, no matter how new the tyre is, if it is temperature b rating, it will explode under the high temperature we had from February this year. Michelin UK cannot be a reference point for our type of tyres. In their imports, 90% are temperature b tyre rating. No need checking out the wear when you are not sure that the tyre will survive a year. I don't know about the UK but in Switzerland, we use two types of tyres. Winter from October to April and Summer from May to September. The summer tyres are called performance tyre but in the USA, they use all season tyre which tolerates both temperatures and its speed rating is restricted but it is always temperature b except the speed rating is v and above, then it is rated as traction aa, temperature a. That's the tyre for Nigerian roads. Check the tyre on your car and look for the temperature rating and act.

The frsc is right. In 2009. we trained some of their officers on tyre monitoring courtesy of Dunlop tyres. The tyres do expire after four years irrespective of the usage. I remember how Michelin tyres were always worried about the stock in their warehouse because of the poor sales activities and their clock ticking on their tyres. That said, the number one problem is the tyre temperature and speed ratings. Even if you bought a 2015 made tyre and it is temperature b tyre and t rating, you are courting danger. Ensure you have temperature a on your tyres and an accurate speed rating for your car.

Car TalkRe: Range Rover Sports Club by sooperrescue(op): 11:10pm On May 20, 2016
Attention to everyone, beware of the engine oil that you use in your range rover. The oil temperature failures leading to oil coolant mixing with water is as a result of the oil not being able to withstand the high elevated temperature level of the engine. I am sorry to say that none of our locally produced engine oils is suitable for range rovers. None. We will advise that the manufacturer specified engine oil should be applied and check your tyres and if the temperature is B, change immediately to temperature A tyres

Facts About Automatic Transmission Fluid That Every Vehicle Owner Should Know

As the owner of a vehicle, it’s important to be very careful and knowledgeable about the fluid you’re using in your transmission. Therefore, today we are going to educate you on the different types of transmission fluid used in both classic and modern automatic transmissions.

Transmission fluid is to an automatic transmission as water is to an aquarium. Some people spend thousands of Naira on their tropical fish hobby. If they don’t maintain the right PH level and water temperature in their custom aquarium, it could cause serious damage, or death. The same rule applies to vehicles. A car is a major investment. Without the correct type of fluid, or the proper amount, the transmission will not operate correctly, and in most cases will self-destruct. Transmission fluid is used in an automatic transmission as a lubricant to provide the transmission with a way to shed excessive heat, and to act as a transmitter of power by using hydraulic pressure to move valves and apply band and clutches.

There are many different types of automatic fluid on the market. Each has its own special blend of oils, chemicals and solids designed to provide the absolute best lubrication properties while still allowing bands and clutches to apply without slipping.

Transmission fluid usually comes colored with red or green dye. This is done to prevent accidental use of the wrong fluid; such as engine oil. Some transmissions use a dip stick to help you gauge the proper amount of fluid the transmission requires to operate properly. Other use a sight hole, similar to how you would check the fluid level on a manual transmission. Yet others are completely sealed and there is really no way to know if the fluid level is correct unless it uses a sensor to transfer fluid level data to the computer in the car.

Here is a little information on some of the more popular fluids that explains what makes one type of transmission fluid different from the others.

Dexron: Includes friction modifiers that are added to the fluid. Dextron II differs from the original fluid in that it has better viscosity control and it includes an oxidation inhibitor. Dexron IIE is designed for an electrically controlled transmission. Dexron III adds more corrosion and oxidation additives than the other Dexron fluids. These fluids are mostly used for GM vehicles. You can find this fluid used in TH350 and TH400 transmissions.

Mercon: Includes friction modifiers that are added to the fluid just like Dexron. It is used mainly in Ford vehicles. There is also a Mercon V that is designed to be used in Ford products produced after 1997. 4R70W is a typical transmission that would use Mercon fluid.

Type F. This type of fluid does not include friction modifiers. It is used in some Ford Products built from 1967 through 1987. Do not use Type F fluid on vehicles that require Mercon fluid! This is the type of fluid that would be used in a C6 transmission.

There are other types of transmission fluid available, but the ones above should cover the majority of the applications you might run across.
transmission fluid comparison chart

Most fluids are available as an organic based fluid, synthetic based fluid or a blend of both. It is perfectly OK to blend a bottle of synthetic fluid with a bottle of organic fluid on your own.

Hopefully this information will make you more informed. It might even prevent you from putting the wrong fluid in a transmission.

Customer takes car to mecho, Mecho works on car, charges customer money, car isn't fixed.
Mecho then proceeds t say it's not his fault that car isn't fixed.
I would laugh if it wasn't exactly the problem with most of our mechanics, sooperrescue or whatever you call yourself, by taking the customers money you have a responsibility to deliver a service in this case a fixed car. Ths you haven't done that's the long and short of it.
Based on above I wouldn't give sooperrescue my bicycle to fix, and would advise that everyone on Nairaland steer clear of him.
obviously you did not read well. On handing over the car to him, he discovered that his headlamps are not working well and made the electrician to reverse almost all the job already done because his headlamp is powered by relays and the car fuse box has been bypassed. Unless he has not agreed to be truthful, let him deny that. Cnairo, you can make yourself look stupid by your insults but let a good electrician restore your electronic to its original state. Sir, Apology is not enough! One thing you should understand in business is that the customer is always right and they're the reason you're in business. Create a certified customer and not a disgruntled one.
Call this guy back and help fix his car at little or NO extra cost to him. He'll come back here testifying with satisfaction.
I think I can relate to his predicament. If I take my car in for maintenance, NO auto medics dare tamper with the original specifications of the vehicle. I won't tolerate any bypass I rather buy a replacement for a faulty item. No matter how he try to convince me I'll insist on "carry come" echoed in the local parlance
What do you now do to a car that the original specification has been turned inside out, the speed clock was not working and after fixing all, the client, instead of telling us to find a way to make his headlamps work factory wise, he insisted on using all the relays that were not supported by the car. The customer is always right but his being right is not justifiable. If I had scammed him or had intention of doing so, I would not have given him a replacement car that was even more recent and expensive than his car because he claimed that he will lose money if he is not mobile that night. I am supposed to be the one crying here because I was not paid for the parts that we fixed. If he was not satisfied, he was expected to return the car instead of telling me that the car is not in order, but because he knew that he did not pay for even the electrician work who charged 12k for the job, he came online to complain. Did we tell him that we changed spark plug and it was not so, or the trans and engine oils, or the prnd and the speed clock is not working? He can also acknowledge that the car without a good engine seat was no longer vibrating and yet he claimed that it was worse. I drove the car home with practically no fuel because I thought that the guage was faulty and it did not stop on the way, it was when he wanted to leave that he called me and told me that the fuel gauge is working and there was no fuel, we gave him four litres of fuel to enable him drive to the petrol station and buy fuel.

The guy was all so nice to me not knowing he was digging a knife deep into my back.
When i took my car to Honda Place, i could not believe what they said they had to fix. I was ready to fight them because i believed so much that he had done his work. My thoughts were that my driver had damaged something. Only for them to bill me for everything he said he had fixed and more.
I now know better than to believe all these "fantastic" ways people hype themselves online. Make i go search for PTA. Thread unfollowed.
Madam, dont believe what you are told at the dealerships. They are not reliable . I once had an issue with a customer who owns a range rover 05. We towed the car from Asaba because the gear was gone. He did not tell us that he dragged the car from warri to asaba instead of carrying the car by truck. After fixing the gear abd other issues, the auxiliary was not ok and I told him that it was not included in the bill. The young man got angry and drove the car to Coscharis who checked the car and gave him a bill of 1,4m to fix the job we asked him to pay 80k extra for. In the end, he begged us to go and pick up the car from Coscharis. They demanded for 80k for diagnostics. We finally took the car and drove it to warri and the auxiliary was now ok. 1.4m to repair a car he wanted to sell for N1.5m. We are still the best no matter how aggrieved a client will be, Nissparts, Gazzuz and other high end mechs are the reason why many Nigerians will buy a car that does not have a franchised dealer in the country because they know that there are guys out there who have invested in upgrading their skills. There used to be a time when these garages will refuse to repair american specs of cars and the owners were confused. Now you can bring in any car in the world because we are here to put your most expensive mobile investment on the road at all times.

Everyone has written what is on their mind and I appreciate all of you. The switches that connects the gear inside the engine has Sev :oen wires all leading to the engine is the can network which was not communicating. His gear selector on the dashboard shows only reverse. That was rectified. After the whole job was done, i took the car home and brought it back the next day. It was working fine. I noticed his fuel guage was low and that it takes an hour before the temperature guage will get near middle. I called him and asked if the guage is working and he said yes and that why is the guage taking that long to get to the normal operating level, he told me that the guage used to get to the level but it will overheat and that it was part of the reason he is paying us to fix the car. I also noticed that it was only one headlight that worked that night and he said both headlamps are in order before he brought it. On the day he was to puck up the car, he made my electriciaN to undo all the job he did on the car because the headlamps and fog lamps had a special relay to power them. When they were done, he left with the car. I believe that in making the rewire to let the lights work as it used to, instead of the way we redesigned it, it made the gear to relaspe. If i had deceived him, i would have told him that we need a new gear and leave his old gear without doing anything. I dont despise any car, when he came and saw all the range rovers in the workshop, he regretted that he just sold the his range rover because of the high maintenance cost. If I like doing big cars, i wont even tell him to come. Anyone from nairaland knows that they get high premium service whenever they visit my shop because of my respect for the forum. The electrician that drove the car confirmed that the Gear was selecting, i took it home and it was selecting and i heard noise in the exhaust and when he came for the car, i told him that the car was with the panel beater who later came back that there was no catalyst converter in the exhaust and he comfirmed it. The electrician told me in his presence that there was no thermostat in the engine, that is why the temperature is permanently below operating temperature. He made us undo most of the electronics on the day he took the car and he cannot now come here and cry wolf. All these incidents are not in his report. He was there when they brought the plugs and he saw it. He can also attest that his gear selector is showing the prnd on his dashboard. I was the one that begged him to use his mechanic to fix the engine seat and get the air intake hose as i dont have the means of looking for parts that are difficult to find. When he said he does not want castrol oil, we drained it and put mobil for him. I know how much i buy the castrol in 1 litre can and the seller asks for his money as soon as it is supplied. He was also there. Were was he scammed or what feeling is he getting if he was told that we changed parts which were not changed.
