kenmaro: Gbam! True talk! Importation of consumer goods is not d cause of Nigeria's financial problems, rather bad leadership, importation of refined petroleum products that can be refined at any of our homes, exportation of our money by our leaders, unstable power/electricity, & etc. No individual country can be self sufficient even d Americans import a lot of their consumer goods from China & Asia but they don't import refined petroleum products & they generate a stable power supply to boost their SMEs & give good relaxation comfort to the human brain & body after a stressful day at work thus enabling d brain to think & plan properly for next coming days unlike the Nigerian brain that doesn't rest even after working stressfully during d day, it will have to come back to a very uncomfortable rest at home thinking how to generate its power and water at home then rise up as early as 4am to prepare for d next day work again so as avoid d poor metro transit system. |

989900: Buying foreign goods (the needed ones), is of less damage to the Naira than importing refined petroleum products -- factor-in importing alternative power sources, especially generators! Those are your real, and of course avoidable demands for Forex (if power is stable even if it is for 12-16 hours/day, and our refineries working).
How many shoes or bags does an average Nigerian buy a day, is it those $20-$30 (average) footwear you buy once in 3-6 months vs your average consumption of 4-7 litres ($5-$8 ) of imported refined fuel (PMS, AGO, DPK) per day?!
Fix power (can't be over emphasized).
Fix the refineries!!
Let the CBN Checkmate currency racketeering, and 'excess liquidity'!
The other stuffs mentioned are good (producing our own food), but are secondary maladies.
Oh, did I mention malfeasance? The GEJs, Diezanis, Dasukis, Abachas, Usenis, Abdusalamis, Tafa Baloguns, IBBs, OBJs, and cronies . . . we are talking probably anything between $150B-$200b in loot! So answer me; how many Brionis, Givenchys, Armanis, Pradas and e.t.c. have you bought, that collapsed the Naira? |

Sorry I totally disagree with you!
They have used the best word to describe the worst President Nigeria has ever had.
He is nothing but a Buffoon and an inglorious fool.
What else can they call a man that presided over the greatest heist ever seen in Africa? A man that opened the floodgates of Nigeria's public finance infrastructure to all his friends all because he wanted to win a second term.
Actually, the Economist is quite liberal. For them to have qualified the retar.d called Jonathan as a buffoon, they must have access to information that supports that qualification.
I will be very happy for them to judge Buhari in same manner if he fails. |

PassingShot: It's unfortunate that we just have to look back given the present situation of our economy. The situation has been brought about by GEJ's failure to save during windfall from oil sale of average of $100 a barrel. He instead reduced foreign account fromm $44bn in 2011 to $29bn in 2015. The question is, what did he do with the $15bn difference and the excess dollars earned in that period?
Can any supporter of GEJ sincerely answer that what he 'achieved' commensurates with what we earned?
The hardship of today is a result of poor decisions of years past.
I don't envy PMB and his team at all. They inherited a hemorrhaging economy at a time oil price is crashing on daily basis. |

In Zimbabwe, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys for $20.00 each. The villagers seeing that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest and started catching them. The man bought thousands at $20.00, and as supply started to diminish, the villagers reduced their effort. He further announced that he would now buy at $30.00. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to their farms. The offer increased to $40.00 each and the supply of monkeys became so little that it took so much effort to even see a monkey, let alone catch it! The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $100.00! However, since he had to go to Jo'burg on some business, his assistant would now buy on his behalf. In the absence of the man, the assistant told the villagers, "Look at all these monkeys in this big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $80, and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to him for $100.00 each." The villagers came together with all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man or his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!

Truth is I wonder if a government sat in power for 5 years plus with price of crude averaging $80 and nothing meaningful achieved, what will be the outcome now if they were in power? but I'm not ready for politics now,I need to monitor the market. You can say that again. Can easily imagine an alternative universe where GEJ, NOI, Diezani (see how Arab proxy UAE snuffed the laments of even the credible Kachikwu with the line of a 'perfectly working' anti-shale strategy) & Emefiele were all still @ the helms. Right now, the wrecked Nigerian majority have only the somewhat 'disinflating' effect of cheap oil/petrol going for them, and successfully transmitted this time, cos of harder & more direct ways the new govt come @ issues Keep it up like this and the present will be when we approached the trough accelerating, notwithstanding the mounting equity/FX carnage. Btruth: There's a different between strong government and a weak one. I will not expect Buhari to audit/investigate the administrations years away from his. I think it's only right for him to audit the immediate one before him. Others would have done the same if they were not corrupt. If you remember, he did the same when he came to power with the Shagari's administration. So, asking him why he is not probing Babangida, Abacha, Abdusalam, Obasanjo, Yardua's administration is not something proper. Let him start from the immediate pass government, and let the next government be preparing to probe him too when he leaves office. |

TonyeBarcanista: You are WRONG Sir! In deregulation, government has completely washed its hand. The N86.5 per litre is the open market estimate(not approved pump rate). Marketers can sell higher or lower but market forces will come to play here.
It's like telecom sector. The coming of Globacom forced MTN and Econet(now Airtel) to drop the cost of acquiring a Sim card, call rate, as well as forced them to introduced Per second billing. Now, sim is as cheap at N50 to N150 with free N50 to N100 airtime on activation depending on the network.
Etisalat came and pioneered free MB on N200 recharge. It forced others to adopt free MB. In fact, SMS that used to be N10 per page is now N2 (MTN-2-MTN).
In essence, the market will regulate the price. Also note that with NNPC importing the larger share it means it will be difficult for independent marketers to hold Nigerians to ransome. |
