In a statement yesterday(Sunday) by its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi, the Senate said members of the public, including those for or against the Anti-Frivolity bill or parts of the bill will have the opportunity to shape its final outcome as there is an elaborate process which the bill must undergo before it becomes a law. It noted that some of the comments on the bill emanated from misconception and misunderstanding of the objective which it said is meant to protect all individuals and institutions, including journalists and social media users. "The senate is committed to freedom of speech and a fully inclusive and participatory democracy". "The process of passing a bill is comprehensive and provide for inputs to be taken from all and sundry. The first stage is merely to read the short title of the bill. The second stage is purely to debate the general principles. "The next stage is committal of the bill to appropriate committee or committees for further detailed legislative action where the details, intendment and clause by clause implications of the bill is dissected by the committee. This stage also involve public hearing in which members of the public, civil society, non governmental organizations and all interested parties for or against the bill have the opportunity to shape and influence its content. "The outcome from this committee stage is what will be finalized and then represented to the chamber for clause by clause consideration and approval or disapproval by the Senate. Thereafter, if the bill is approved, then the clean version of the bill is forwarded to the House of Representatives for concurrence or otherwise", he stated. The Senate added that the differences that may emerge from the House of Representatives version will be resolved through the Conference Committee of the two chambers of the National Assembly. He added that the anti-frivolity bill will go through the whole hog and there is no intention to make the process of passing this bill any different. "Accordingly, the Senate wants to re-assure the public about this. So, all those who are either for or against this bill or its part and any other one have ample opportunities to reshape it", he stated. Senator Sabi further explained that the Eighth Senate is conscious of its responsibility to the people and will not do anything that will stifle participation and inclusion. "We will always ensure we pass laws which meets best practices across the world and indeed democratic scrutiny. Suggesting that the senate wants to pass a law not even practiced in China etc is being mischievous. "This Senate is people-centred, pro-poor and participatory. We will always act in the best interest of the citizenry. In this regard, we are totally committed to performing our duties and discharging our responsibilities without let or hindrance. "All those spreading hate campaigns as a result of the Anti-frivolity bill, hauling insults at and making derogatory comments on Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the institution of the Senate are advised to key into the elaborate legislative process that a bill must pass through before becoming law if they are interested in shaping the outcome of the bill. This is the right way to go and part of the change we all aspire for our democracy "The eighth Senate is totally committed to protecting the liberty of all Nigerians and the independence of the Senate and the legislative arm of government as we deepen our democratic journey", Aliyu stated. Signed Senator Aliyu Sabi Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs. |

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday announced $60-billion (R864-billion) of assistance and loans for Africa as he addressed a summit of African leaders in Johannesburg. "China decides to provide a total of $60-billion of funding support that includes $5-billion of grants in zero interest loans (and) $35-billion in preferential facility and export credit loans and concessional loans," he said. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) will continue on Saturday as banking, business and political delegates from African countries and China gather to talk about how to develop cooperative, egalitarian relationships for the future. The traditional historical model for Chinese companies doing business in Africa has been on the basis of engineering, procurement, construction (known as EPC), where a contractor designs a project, procures all the equipment and materials, and constructs and delivers the facility to a client. But this is beginning to change, giving way to one where the Chinese investor commits to working with a local partner and takes an equity stake in a joint venture. What can sound like so much lip service when it comes from politicians packs a lot of punch when it is a discussion between businesspeople and financiers with experience on the ground. The theme for the forum is “Africa-China Progressing Together: Win-Win Cooperation for Common Development ” and the Summit is expected to adopt the Johannesburg Declaration and Action Plan which will outline specific measures aimed at consolidating the growing mutual partnership between Africa and China. Also worth watching is what might emerge when South African President Jacob Zuma and Nigerian Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari come into contact. It is believed that they are more than likely to discuss the $5.2billion penalty imposed on mobile operator MTN by Nigerian regulators for failing to disconnect 5.1 million unregistered users.

Nollywood actress and mother of three, Omoni Oboli has revealed three wonderful tips to make children eat vegetable. In the new post titled “How to Make Kids Eat Their Vegetables” she shares 10 tips that can help mothers convince their growing kids to eat healthier. See her 10 tips below. 1. Practice what you preach! The first thing however is to lead by example! The first thing my kids ask when you present them with any new meal is, ‘Is it healthy’? If you say it is, they will at least try it. I have over the years, taught them by my own eating habits, what is healthy, and what isn’t. By far the best determinant of a child’s eating behavior is the eating patterns of their parents. If vegetables and healthy foods are always an afterthought in your home, you can’t expect your kids to take to them. The most important thing is to set a good example. Your actions speak louder than words. Plus you need your vegetables too! 2.Make food fun Relating healthy food to fun things the child already loves and turning it into a game is a great way to get them to eat their veggies. They also love playing make believe. I remember once we went out to eat with my cousin and her boys. One of her kids didn’t want to eat his veggies because he doesn’t like veggies. My husband got him to eat it by saying the veggies were his Goliath and he needed to slay his Goliath. We made it fun by cheering him on with every mouthful and hailing him for slaying his Goliath! He ended up eating the whole thing. We cannot overemphasize the need to make food and meal times fun! 3.Get them involved Like we said before, children are more interested in a meal if they help with its preparation. Letting them clean carrots, mix the dressing, wash the green vegetables and set the table. It gives them a sense of pride and makes them more enthusiastic and cooperative at meal time. Even taking them to the store or the market and letting them choose what tomatoes or vegetables to buy helps as well. 4. Enforce the “one mouthful rule” Research consistently shows that children who have rejected a particular food must be exposed to it at least 21 times before concluding that they don’t like it. Many parents have had success with the “one mouthful rule,” requiring the child to try at least one solid mouthful of a rejected food whenever it is served. After enough exposures the food will be more familiar to the child and usually they begin to rate it more favorably. It works! My boys today eat foods they never liked before. 5. Don’t force them to eat it all One mouthful is different from finishing your plate. One of the biggest misconceptions among parents is that forcing their kids to eat food they don’t like will get them to change. However, fighting and punishments create a bad meal time experience, and the child will learn to associate food with the bad feelings. Bad food experiences have the opposite effect and actually increase lack of interest in food. 6. Reward good behavior On the other side of the coin, creating positive food experiences can decrease picky eating tendencies. Research has shown that rewarding a child for trying one bite of a rejected food with fun things or fun times make it easier for them to try the food. They are also more likely to rate the food positively in the future. 7. Offer diverse food colors One thing you have working in your favor is that children like colorful foods. You can expose them to more colors by adding more vegetables to their plates. 8. Arrange food in patterns on the plate Another reason to cook different vegetables separately is that children love when their food is designed into patterns on their plate. Unlike adults, who prefer foods clumped near each other in the center of the plate, kids like their food separated into piles around the perimeter. If you shape it into a heart or smiley face, they’ll like it even more. This is another way to make food fun. 9. Use additional flavours There’s nothing wrong with introducing additional flavors to vegetables to make them tastier to children. For a picky child, the most important thing is that he gets comfortable and familiar with the rejected food. If that means serving it along with something you know he’ll enjoy. That’s fine! I encourage you to use ingredients that are as close to real food (minimally processed without strange chemicals) as possible. Children can handle a few extra calories, especially if it helps them learn to enjoy spinach. When I give my boys smoothies, I add a lot more bananas and just a handful of spinach. Sometimes, I add some homemade yoghurt to their fruit and vegetable smoothies. Made from Nunu milk of course! (Leave a comment if you want my homemade yoghurt recipe) 10. Keep at it Some children will be more difficult than others, and will require more effort and patience. It’s important to realize, however, that the habits they develop at a young age will remain with them long into adulthood. For your sake and theirs, it is worth solving picky eating problems as soon as possible. Continue to set a good example, create fun, positive experiences around food, let them help in the kitchen, enforce the one mouthful rule and do anything else you can to keep exposing them, in a pleasant way, to the healthy foods they reject. Your persistence will eventually pay off! Whatever you do, don’t give up because our kids need to Grow Every day!

On Monday, 30th November, 2015, the hierarchy of the APC propelled their defeated and misguided minions in Rivers State to orchestrate conflict and truncate the entrenched developmental process that has engulfed the state. Fortunately for the people of Rivers State, these purveyors of under-development and un-mitigated falsehood failed. Their expectations of evil did not see the light of day because darkness which they represented by their black costumes will never overcome progress. So, as they attempted to provoke violence, the good people of Rivers State watched them patiently, allowing them to exhaust their bag of mischievous tricks. As an important information, every case of reported violence before and during the last general elections can be squarely placed at the doorsteps of the immediate past Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi who was APC National Electoral Financier. Few weeks to the election, Amaechi took advantage of the then collapsed judiciary which he personally crippled to unilaterally release over 300 arrested militants and cultists awaiting trial into the streets of Rivers State. I will come back to this unpatriotic Amaechi's act later in this piece . As they marched on Aba road before they moved to the venue of their campaign rally where they used unprintable words soaked in illegality, the good people of Rivers State took the time to promote safe practices aimed at reducing HIV/AIDS in line with the World AIDS Day that came up on December 1. Unlike the harbingers of evil news, the people of Rivers State wore white signifying peace and development. The Rivers State APC failed Black Monday march had all the trappings of a poorly scripted nollywood film. It was like a scene of hired mourners who did not take time to rehearse their lines before stepping on stage. Because the Rivers State APC and her leaders have been notorious for falsehood and make-believe, they were unable to be truthful for once. First, the list released by the party was premised on fiction as many of the names had no correlation with the state. Secondly, a notoriously violent former defeated state lawmaker, Chidi Lloyd, conspicuously led aspects of the march with concealed sword tucked in a walking stick. Lloyd in pictures released by the Rivers State APC was in a celebratory mood. A former federal lawmaker, Senator Magnus Abe led other party leaders to take celebratory photographs in the course of the failed march. These celebratory pictures were released by the Rivers State APC and her members. That the event was convinced in devilish thoughts against the progress of Rivers State is no longer in doubt. It was simply funded by those who embezzled Rivers State funds but are scared of the superlative performance of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. All they wanted was to create panic. But the vast majority of Rivers people know their tricks and refused to be deceived. The fact that the State chairman of the defeated Rivers State APC had the effrontery to call for state of emergency at their campaign rally after the failed march speaks volumes of the hatred that these failed politicians have for the less privileged people of the state. In their desperation, they are keen to stop the massive construction and development work going on across the state. With failure staring them in the face, Rivers State APC resorted to employing additional tricks of using false media propaganda to mislead those who were not in the state on Monday. Of course, APC owned newspaper, The Nation was the first option. The paper concocted a story wherein it claimed 10 buses were burnt as PDP attacked the failed rally. This was a rally aired on live television without any incident. Also, a pro-APC reporter who helps his paymasters in a Lagos based newspaper, fabricated another set of lies for the APC to justify funds released. Luckily for everyone, the police has cleared the air, advising the two newspapers to tow the path of professionalism. We doubt if these reporters will hid that candid advice. What the Rivers State APC failed to get through the inglorious march, they thought they would achieve through sponsored media falsehood. Like the failed march, their propaganda has also failed. Monday, 30th November, 2015 was a day where the cause of development in Rivers State was further advanced . Contrary to the speculation of the APC, all economic activities were carried out successfully across the state. Multinationals conducted their businesses in a peaceful atmosphere while educational and social activities went unhindered. All developmental projects making the people of Rivers State happy went on as scheduled. All the destructive plans of the defeated Rivers State APC failed to yield the ungodly results they had planned. Back to Former Governor Rotimi Amaechi's unpatriotic acts that almost threw Rivers State into confusion before, during and after the election. The fact that he released militants and cultists awaiting trial is a well documented fact, which was widely reported. The Rivers State APC had lost all forms of credibility and what was left of its damaged reputation was marred by the unbridled corruption of the Amaechi administration which had failed in all responsibilities to the people of the state. Therefore, they were never ready for election, hence Amaechi released criminals with the intention of unleashing mayhem. In support of these criminals, Amaechi funded pliant mainstream and online media to concoct baseless reports. This was the scenario. The Rivers State APC had no premise to contest the last general elections and were not ready for the elections. The people of Rivers State weathered the storm of the criminals released by Amaechi and voted for the candidate of their choice, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. Without doubt, the security agencies who provided the right environment for the elections deserve our commendation. The desperation of Amaechi and his political godson, Dakuku Peterside stands condemned. These men are only interested in their personal gains. They hardly put Rivers State in their equation. Otherwise, they would have seen the handwriting on the Rivers, land and everywhere. They are traitors who only serve the interest of their regional lords. They have no mind of their own. Governor Wike has made a solemn pledge to protect the state from external and internal resource predators. He is living up to his promise and will continue to live up to this pledge. These unwholesome tricks will not distract Governor Wike as his eyes are on the ball of development. Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor, Electronic Media.

There was drama over the weekend in Ogbia in ex-president Goodluck Jonathan’s local government area in Bayelsa State, when APC youths from the area, carried a mock coffin decorated with the colours and a flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The youths comprising males and females were all dressed in traditional black T-shirts.They first carried the coffin in a procession round the Ogbia town before bringing it to the venue of the rally. The youths took the coffin draped with a PDP flag with an inscription 'PDP Rest in Peace' on it into a venue arranged for a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the December 5 governorship election. In addition to this, they erected a signpost indicating burial arrangements of the party on December 5.Round the coffin were traditional items used to bury deceased persons based on the tradition of the Ijaw people.
