Lagos Monarch Nabbed For Murder
- By Jire Adio

The Alayobo of Ayobo, Oba Idowu Ojoijo, was, yesterday, arrested along with 17 others, by policemen afrom the State CID, Panti, Yaba, over an alleged murder. The policemen were led by Inspector Sanni Nasir.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the monarch was whisked away from his Ayobo palace, around 11 a.m., along with some of his chiefs and others believed to be Odua People’s Congress (OPC) members. The oba was seen at the State CID, Panti, yesterday afternoon, being interrogated by policemen in the D4 homicide department, after writing his statement.

As at the time of filing this report, Oba Ojoijo was still being detained in one of the offices in Panti. He confirmed his ordeal to P.M.NEWS when he was called on phone. Said the monarch: “It is true I was arrested by policemen from Panti. As a matter of fact, I am still there now because they refused to release me after I had written my statement.”

The oba said he was arrested along with two of his chiefs, Tajudeen Balogun (Asipa) and Chief Mojeed, a.k.a. Baba Ijon, the Seriki, his surveyor, a man simply called ‘Pure Water’ and 13 others who were met in his palace.

Police sources at Panti, however, revealed to P.M.NEWS that some of the suspects, including the Baale of Bada and some landlords in the area, are on the run, adding that the chairman of the Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, Prince Bisi Yusuf, has also been invited by the police over same allegation.

The source revealed that the arrest of the monarch and others is in connection with the 10 July, 2008, mayhem in Ayobo, where two men were reportedly killed. They are Abiodun Mustapha (Ololo), 18, and Muritala, 28. An impeccable police source further told P.M.NEWS that the oba and other suspects will be charged to court for murder.

It was also gathered that the bodies of the deceased are still in the morgue. Mr. Ekundayo Arimiyu Bello won a land dispute suit last year and made moves to take possession of the disputed massive land in Ayobo, Megida, Bada and their environs, but was allegedly restrained by those arrested, thus leading to mayhem. The PPRO of the Lagos Police Command, Mr. Frank Mba, confirmed the oba’s arrest, saying “we are aware he was arrested and being interrogated at the State CID, Panti.”

Late Shehu of Borno had no house, gave out all possessions to the poor
Thursday, February 26, 2009

As you read this, one of the fire contenders to the throne musht have been announced as the new Shehu of Borno. But the starkling revelation emerging within the week is that the late Shehu gave out all he had to poor people.

https://odili.net/news/source/2009/feb/26/sun/tt.jpg
•Late Mustapha

The atmosphere at the palace of Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Mustapha Umar El-Kanemi on Sunday afternoon was unusually dull. A heavy silence pervaded the hitherto lively open field in front of the ancient palace. Unlike before, hundreds of children and street urchins known in local parlance as almajiris were not in the mood to play football. For them and many others, it was a sad day as they await the corpse of the late Shehu, Alhaji Mustapha Umar El-kanemi who died on Friday evening in a Cairo hospital in Egypt following a protracted illness.

On this day, the children queued, not for gifts or money usually given by Baba Masa (the late Shehu’s nickname given to him by the children) after each football match or sporting activity at the field but to bid him farewell to the world of his ancestors. As various dignitaries including political leaders, religious and traditional rulers from across the country entered the palace to commiserate with the late Shehu’s large family, it dawned on the people of the State and the Muslim community in Nigeria that the 19th spiritual/cultural leader of the Kanem-Bornu Kingdom as well as the Deputy National Vice President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, is gone forever!

His Last Days

The late Shehu has been in and out of the country in about the last 20 years for medical treatment to the extent that he was rumoured to have passed away at a Saudi Arabia hospital sometimes in 2007. Unconfirmed report claimed he suffered from cancer, prompting a request by a hospital to amputate the affected leg which he allegedly rebuffed. Nevertheless, his poor health would not debar him from attending some important public functions. During the visit of the former NNPC Group Managing Director, Engr. Mohammed Yar’Ardua to his palace to brief the royal father on the efforts of the Federal Government to resume oil prospection in the Lake Chad area, a physically weak Shehu could barely be heard in his response to the GMD’s speech. Shortly before his health condition relapsed early last week, he was said to have counseled some children on the virtue of honesty and peaceful coexistence among all men. By Wednesday night, he was reportedly flown to Egypt en route Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. But the news of his death filtered into the city on Friday night, while the official confirmation later came from the State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff on Saturday night in a radio broadcast.

Shehu Mustapha, from public service to politics

Born in 1924 as the 4th son of the 17th Shehu of Borno, Sir Umar Ibn Mohammed El-Kanemi, the late Shehu received his early education at Dikwa, reputed for being the second El-Kanemi dynasty between 1936 and 1944. He later attended an administrative training course at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in 1953/54 and a local government course for district heads in 1969.

He commenced his public service career as an administrator in 1945 when he became the secretary of the Wali of Borno. He was subsequently transferred to various departments of the then Native Authority, including the police, Central Administration and Veterinary Department as a representative (Yalema) of the then Shehu.

Armed with these experiences, he was elected into the Northern Nigeria House of Assembly in 1956 on the platform of the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) representing the Damaturu/Bursari constituency, and re-elected in 1959. He was also appointed as Parliamentary Secretary or junior minister in the ministry of lands and survey, Northern Region, Kaduna in 1961. After his political experience, he returned to Maiduguri in 1966 to the Central Office. In 1968, he became the District Head of Mafa and subsequently to Nganzai District in 1970, a position he held until he became the Shehu of Borno in 1974.

Receiving his Staff of Office during his formal installation on February 1, 1975 as the 19th Shehu, he pledged to work for the unity and peace of all. His words: “I shall make every effort to be honest in dealing with my people and uphold justice, rule of law and fair play. I shall always work for the peace and progress of my people, irrespective of ethnic origin, religion or place of birth. I will do my best to bring about improvement in the standard of living of the entire people of our emirate.”

Little wonder that most settlers and indigenes of the state saw him as a bridge builder, generous and accessible. It was said that many would not want him to travel out of the state when sectarian crisis broke out in some Northern States so as to nip possible crisis in the bud. Like his father, family sources claimed Shehu Mustapha died without a personal house, property or known asset. Resources that came to him were said to be distributed to coteries of people who usually besiege his palace everyday for assistance.

The Shehu’s stool

Borno, a caliphate and home of the Kanuris has a rich Islamic history. Historians say the Jihad fought by a Bornu Islamic scholar, Sheikh Mohammad Al-Amin El-kanemi in the 18 /19 century led to the beginning of the Shehu’s stool. Al-Amin, the scholar/warrior was said to have spent 17 years in spiritual seclusion at Ngala to conquer the Fulani invaders before ascending power as the traditional ruler of Kanem-Borno. Following his exploit, it was at this town that he was proclaimed Mai of Borno until later before it was changed to Shehu. Therefore, Al-Amin or Laminu ruled for 21 years from 1814 to 1835.

Daily Sun gathered that tradition expects the 7-member king makers to declare the seat of Shehu vacant in the event that the occupant was incapacitated to discharge his duties or died. The kingmakers are also expected to screen contestants for the stool while a new Shehu is usually announced after the three days prayer by the kingmakers to commence full tradition.

Tussle for the stool

Expectedly, the tussle for the stool of Shehu commenced shortly after the State government formally broke the news of the dead of the former royal father. Top on the lists of the contestants are the late Shehu’s son, Alhaji Baba Shehu Mustapha, the incumbent district head of Nganzai, Alhaji Abba Rufai, another prince, he is a General Manager with the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) and immediate brother of the late Shehu, Alhaji Kyari Abba Garbai, Permanent Secretary, Borno State ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs and Alhaji Kashim Umar Garbai, a civil servant at the presidency. Among all these, Baba Shehu is seen as the likely successor to the throne.

Palace sources told Daily Sun that the late Shehu has never hidden his wish for his son to succeed him. “Don’t you know the appointment of Baba Shehu as the district head of Nganzai was strategic? This is because it was the same place the former Shehu was groomed and brought to the throne and the late royal father has been grooming the young man for the stool since,” a staff at the palace that preferred anonymity disclosed. It is believed that Baba has what it takes to excel like his father on the throne.

However, some argued that the Shehu’s immediate brother would be more efficient on the throne than his cousin. His wealth of experience as a public servant is expected to be brought to the fore in the Shehu’s stool particularly in the contemporary Nigerian society where the traditional institution is gradually becoming elitist. The Borno State permanent secretary in the ministry of local government, Kyari Garbai also enjoys the support of many people in the State, especially the governor. Daily Sun learnt that some senior government officials have commenced intense lobby among the king makers to ensure the Permanent Secretary is finally picked. Though, Governor Ali Modu Sheriff was said to have advised the kingmakers and the family of the late Shehu to resolve the successor issue without rancour when he visited the palace last Saturday night, many believed that the visit was a mere formality to confuse the public about government intention.

A source claimed the governor was favourably disposed to having Kyari Garbai as the new Shehu for possible political maneuvering when elections come. It was believed that the candidacy of Garbai sells much in the government circle to ensure the governor has a grip on the occupant of Shehu’s stool even after leaving office. Besides, during the battle for soul of Borno in 2003 between late Governor Mala Kachallah and his successor, the incumbent, only Garbai supported Sheriff, as the rest all queued behind the late Kachallah, largely because of his peaceful disposition to handling State affairs. However, his media assistant, Nancy Brian Mbaya dismissed it as “a work of mischief maker,” arguing that the selection of a new Shehu cannot be influenced just like that especially by a governor who believes in tradition of his people.”

By the time you are reading this report, a new Shehu would have been announced and another history book open for the people of the El-Kanemi State, signaling the dawn of another reign!

Ritualists invade Gombe

•Pluck out woman’s eye
•Kill 18-month old baby
Thursday, February 26, 2009

The residents of Federal Low cost and Tashan Dukku areas of Gombe, the Gombe State capital woke up last weekend to hear shocking and gory details of how the right eye of a dead woman was plucked out by suspected ritualists.

Her corpse was deposited in one of the admission rooms of Miyyetti Clinic in Gombe metropolis but allegedly disappeared into thin air through the activities of yet to be identified people.

Officers and men of the Gombe State Police Command have swung into action to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the right eye of the dead woman.

Daily Sun gathered that but for the urgent and prompt intervention of officers and men of the detachment of the Mobile Police unit in Gombe who mobilized to the area to dispersed the rampaging angered crowd that gathered at the clinic premises, Miyyetti clinic would have been set ablaze as parts of it was already torched by the time the Police showed up.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abdullahi Kamba gave the name of the dead woman as Zainab Mohammed who was admitted at the hospital and operated upon on Tuesday the 17th of February 2009 after she had complained of stomach ache. She was delivered of a baby sometimes in January.

Kamba also said that the 40 year-old woman was confirmed dead few hours after the successful operation on the said day while the corpse was kept in a room in the hospital since there was no mortuary in the hospital as they waited for the owners of the corpse to come and take it for burial.

Trouble however started when the owners of the corpse came to claim it and upon closer examinations discovered that the body had been tempered with as the right eye had been allegedly removed by yet to be identified people suspected to be ritualists just as the PPRO disclosed that all the five staff on duty on the fateful day including a gateman and Dr. Bappah Aliyu who was also on duty have been immediately arrested while investigations has since commenced.

When contacted a confused husband of late Zainab, one Babani Mallami, a staff of the Gombe State Ministry of Information, expressed worry at why such a thing was happening to him explaining that one month after she gave birth, she had been complaining of stomach ache which also resulted in the gradual swelling of her stomach adding that it was as a result this that she was taken to the hospital where she was subsequently operated upon and then died.

While confirming the incident further, the first son of the woman who is said to be around 23 years old, Ibrahim Kabir said they spent three days with the mother in the hospital and that when the doctor suggested that she should be operated upon which would cost N15, 000.00, he was also asked to provide one sachet bag of blood.

According to him, after signing for the operation, he went to look for the money but came back to discover that she died some hours after the operation saying that they were not briefed about what was removed from her stomach and that even when he was shown the corpse, he did not see any wound in his mother’s body apart from the wound on her stomach where she was operated upon thus expressing surprise when the next morning he discovered that one right eye was missing.

He added that as Muslims, his uncles did not allow for further investigations on the corpse as it was buried the following day Wednesday, according to Islamic injunctions.

As at the time of filing this report, unconfirmed report has it that members of the Gombe State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) had already taken steps and got their colleague, Dr. Bappah released from Police custody pending the outcome of the investigations and other legal actions likely to be taken by the Police.

But as if to confirm the activities of ritualists in the State, in another part of the State, within the metropolis, called Pantami, an attempt was made to steal a one and a half years old Deborah Gayauna Phinehas in front of her parents’ house. And the toddler later died in the hospital due to severe injuries inflicted on her during the attempt to steal her.

Daily Sun reliably gathered that the suspected ritualist who rode on a motorcycle that fateful Tuesday afternoon (3rd-February, 2009) tried to snatch little Gayauna on his motorcycle but when other children from a distance saw what was happening and shouted ‘barawo’ (thief), he threw her down from the bike and rode on her which later led to her death at the Primary Health Care Centre, Pantami.

Narrating their predicaments with uncontrollable tears, both parents of late little Gayauna who spent three unfruitful years before God blessed them with the only daughter cursed whoever was the man who was instrumental to the death of their only source of joy praying that very soon God will expose such evil people within the society so that the innocent will be allowed to live their lives according to the will of God.

As it is now residents of Gombe now live in fear, waiting and praying that soon the Police and other security agents in the State would swing into action to nip the activities of these ritualists in the bud.

Six feared killed as fresh violence erupts in Ilaje

By Femi Makinde, Akure

Fresh violence on Wednesday erupted in Ugbo and Ugbonla over the lingering chieftaincy tussle in the riverine communities.

advertisement

Six persons were said to have died in the mayhem which left the two communities deserted following the terror unleashed on the communities by gunmen who were accused of being sent by a well-known indigene of Ilaje.

No fewer than 20 persons were also said to have sustained gunshot injuries in the crisis. Most residents were hiding inside the bush for fear of being killed by the hoodlums.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, numbering about 50 and dressed in army uniform, stormed Ugbo and Ugbonla and set ablaze houses, including the palace of the deposed Olugbo of Ugbo, Prince Adebanjo Mafimisebi.

The palace of the monarch of Ugbonla, Oba Henry Ogunfeyimi, and other houses in the town were also reportedly set on fire.

The whereabouts of the deposed Olugbo was still unknown as at 8pm when this story was filed.

The gunmen, who headed straight to Ugbo, were said to have invaded the town at about 4:15pm. A source said that the hoodlums started shooting and setting on fire houses and other property.

Ogunfeyimi told our correspondent on the telephone that "My palace and other houses in Ugbonla are on fire now as I am speaking with you."

He said that he was lucky as he escaped from the palace before the hoodlums stormed Ugbonla. The monarch said that he was hiding in an undisclosed place.

The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Council, Mr. Olasehinde Mesogboriwon, told our correspondent that soldiers had been deployed to quell the crisis.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, could not be reached for comments on the incident. Calls to his mobile phone were not answered.

There has been a lingering crisis over the Olugbo stool since the Supreme Court removed Mafimisebi from throne in January 2007. There have been crises in both Ugbo and Ugbonla since.

Some gunmen had on December 27, 2008 stormed Ugbonla  and rained bullets on Ogunfeyimi's palace. Although the monarch escaped unhurt, about 10 vehicles parked in the palace were destroyed.

Ogunfeyimi, who is also the head of the Cherubim &Seraphim Church of Zion, on February 15, 2009, told our correspondent that a prominent indigene of Ilaje was planning to unleash terror on Ugbonla.

Ogunfeyimi alleged that the planned attack was aimed at disrupting the 61st anniversary of the town which was scheduled to begin on Monday, February 16, 2009.Â

He called on security operatives in the state to beef up security around the area saying hoodlums had been recruited and armed to start maiming and killing innocent persons beginning from February 16.

But the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr.Adeniran Aremu, in an interview with our correspondent  allayed the fear of the people of the town.

Why PH women want kidnapping to continue

By Agency Reporter

The kidnapping business might be a reprehensible one but it sure has its good sides. Who best should tell the world of the good sides of kidnapping but the man who is governor of one of the states with a reputation for kidnapping - Rivers State?

Last week, while Governor Rotimi Amaechi was at the Lagos Country Club on a visit, someone asked him what he was doing to tackle the spate of kidnapping his state was fast developing a reputation for.

After he had spoken on the efforts of the state to combat kidnapping, his face wore a mischievous grin as he explained why their efforts were almost thwarted by Port Harcourt women.

"While the siege lasted, men stayed at home more for fear of kidnappers," he said.

"Wives, of course, had opportunity to get close to their absentee husbands.

The other side of the whole thing is that more babies were made during this period.

Now that kidnapping has even reduced, the men have started going out once more, to their wives chagrin,"

Swiss account: Wealthy Nigerians, Americans go to court to stop disclosure
By Chinedu Offor, Correspondent, Washington DC

Dozens of wealthy Americans and Nigerians have gone to court to prevent the disclosure of their identities by a major Swiss bank.

In a case filed in a Swiss Federal Court, the clients are seeking an order to keep their names out of the public domain as part of a tax-evasion investigation by the United States Justice Department.

Justice Department officials said the lawsuit accuses UBS and Switzerland's financial regulator, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), of violating Swiss bank secrecy laws and of conducting illegal activities with foreign authorities.

It also named Peter Kurer, the Chairman of UBS, and Eugen Haltiner, the Chairman of FINMA, as defendants.

The suit, filed by a lawyer in Zurich, Andreas Rued, on behalf of about 12 American and Nigerian clients, underscores the growing clash between Swiss banking secrecy laws and those of the U.S.

Tax evasion is not considered a crime in Switzerland.

Disclosing client names under Swiss law is a criminal offence and can expose bank executives and officers to fines, prison terms, and other penalties.

UBS is the world's largest private bank, and Switzerland is the world's largest offshore tax haven, with trillions of Dollars in assets.

The lawsuit is a fall out of UBS's agreement last week to turn over to American federal authorities in Washington the names of 250 wealthy Americans and about 50 Nigerian officials suspected of using secret UBS offshore accounts and entities to evade taxes.

UBS reached a $780 million deferred-prosecution agreement to settle accusations that it used undisclosed offshore private banking services to help wealthy Americans evade taxes.

But the bank is still under scrutiny by the Justice Department, which is seeking to force it to disclose the names of 52,000 American clients it suspects may have evaded taxes.

Some of the affected Nigerians hold dual American-Nigerian passports.

You suggest we remain like this till jesus comes?. Something gotta be done. Do you think that if BecomeRich is hausa, he'll be receiving all these insults from his own kinsmen?. Inequality of the sexes was actively promoted in Nigeria. Rather than aspire to equality with men, women were encouraged to accept the status of inferiority and to become the mistresses of successful politicians and business executive, or they were married off at the age of fourteen as the fifteenth wives of the new rich
Oh am loving Ojukwu. He wrote this in 1969?

In one area of Nigeria, for instance, they preferred to turn a nurse who had worked for five years into a doctor rather than employ a qualified doctor from another part of Nigeria
. Barely literate clerks were made Permanent Secretaries. A university Vice Chancellor was sacked because he belonged to the wrong tribe. Bribery, corruption and nepotism were so widespread that people began to wonder openly whether any country in the world could compare with Nigeria in corruption and abuse of power.
Who else will do this if not Hausas?. Who will be crazy enough to convert a nurse into a doctor?

I am not saying I prefer Awolowo to Azikiwe. Of course, Azikiwe was a nationalist but what am saying is that his vision was not the right one for Africa at that time.  We were not mature enough to understand that system of govt. Common, Awo was already warring with Akintola as early as that time. Imagine how many wars we will be fighting in Nigeria now if we fostered the tribal interest over the national one.

It's the variant form of Alabukun. grin grin

There WILL NEVER be a USN without the tribes uniting first.
But unfortunately, the past is just too painful a record for some of us to delete.
No tribe is united in this world. it's there in the bible but they can find a way to work with each other amicably and the only way to do it is through education which will sharpen your common sense and us more civil. We can't even unite online how much less offline. They have many tribes in America, almost all of them were immigrants yet they are working together for the good of America. If the north remains backward in education and economy, you and I will remain down with them whether you like it or not so their backwardness is not only their problem but yours too. We got a big problem.

So what is bad in Azikwe's dream of one Nigeria??
That our leaders have been twats shouldn't be blamed on Nnamdi Azikwe.
He was a national HERO.
Because he misjudged the animosity among the tribes which is a common African problem. He was too western for Africa and look at the result now. Awolowo understood African politics more than Azikiwe. Na only book Azikiwe sabi. He gambled which may have worked if Nigeria is in Europe.

The country could have been partitioned at the time of independence if we wanted it be. Palestine was partitioned, India was partitioned. Nigerians choose to engage in this risky experiment. We have no choice but to make it work or just partition.
They wanted United States of Nigeria. Handiwork of Nnamdi azikiwe.

Legal document the northerner leader signed that allow for secession after independant. we can post it online. sorry. we would want the world to confirm the document are real before it can go public. so that northener would not claim it is fake document.

what do you think. You think Awolowo a lawyer would sign document with the north, without including clause in it to remove us from Nigeria. the northener leader signed document that allows us to leave nigeria. Even apart from that , your 1999 constitution too, allow us to leave. we can leave.

President obasanjo hand over some part of the north to chad. President Yar adua hand over bakassi to cameroon.  are those ethnics group still part of nigeria. ? Huh NO. the people of bakassi are part of cameroon.

The same way we would be part of Benin.

we have the required number of senators and house of rep member to amend the consitutition to remove us from nigeria. like I said, we were careful with bayelsa state till we got an email from an ijaw group requesting to be part of Benin republic. And we are willing to allow the United nation to conduct a poll in ijaw land to see if the Ijaw people would want to remain in Nigeria or join the republic of benin.
Roflmao, why Ijaws, why not Bini and ishan  people?. Don't you think they'll be easier to capture by Yorubas?  grin grin

Northerners didn't support Independence so why is it a surprise they wanted to secede. You forced the union and now you want to pull out? huh.
Lord Lugard forced the union in 1914. What are you talking about?. Since we have 'certificate of exit' like BecomeRich claimed, we want out abeg.

after sometime calabar will be the abuja of Nigeria, igbo and Ijaws will soon starting fighting for us
we are prettiest girls in Nigeria Smiley and we know how to treat a man
Calabar just launched the energy city which is another Tinapa project in the making.  Leave Ijaws out of your rancor abeg, it's hausas that are the problem in Nigeria. If we do learn from our mistakes like Americans,  Ijaw/ogoni/whatever their names are should have known that hausas took them for a ride and they should be making amendments because their fathers surely gambled and lost. The beast up north is still standing tall, waiting with his matchet and daggers. If it were not the igbo and yoruba, they would've taken you guys as their slaves and wives by now. That is their normal method of operation.
