Originalsly: Which government puts money into the auto industry?... the US? ... Japan?
@ topic .... countries through their policies are setting dates and regulations and incentives to phase out fossil fuel cars. What will the manufacturers do with their soon to be obsolete assembly plants? ... sell them as scrap iron?.... or shift them to a back to the future country and continue generating income? They found us and here we are celebrating... what next?...
"NIGERIA TO ESTABLISH THE WORLDS BIGGEST DVD FACTORY." My friend, I worked in the auto industry in the UK for 15 years from 2000-2015 and I can tell you that the UK government provided grants to local universities in Warwick, Coventry University and Birmingham University to support Auto R & D. The UK government built roads (M6, M40 and M42) that integrate auto manufacturing towns in Castle Bromwich, Solihull, Coventry, Shirley and Gaydon. The supply chain that connects these towns was built by the regional and national UK governments, the fact that Jaguar Land Rover can source the majority of its parts from the surrounding towns. 65% of car manufacturing is made up of iron and steel, hence until Nigeria develop a steel industry forget about the automobile industry, we had one in the 1980s and that did not last long once Nigeria couldn't afford the cost of the CKD and steel imports. Nigeria cannot build a sustainable auto industry with petrochemical plants, steel plants, electricity power, clean water, talented technicians and engineers that all require government support |

That is part of the problem. The real issue is that the Afghan never created a real army. Most were not different from salary earning civil servants with zero loyalty or expertise. Maybe the army is sympathetic to the Taliban, similar to the Nigerian army that has been infiltrated by extreme Islamists. |

I know it wasn't Gen Buhari that cancelled the contract but Government at all levels must stop this nauseating habit of thinking they can cancel an agreement with a company just because the previous government in power has chopped all the bribe. Isn't it something the Black man knows that the White doesn't? The local man already has the solution but here you are ... a local ... condemning your own while singing praises to the alien. Dummy, living in the Jungle and depending on evolution to take its cause...is not a strategy. Sickle cell and immunity can only do so much. Invest in talent and develop an African solution. A vaccine laboratory that once saved lives
In the months and years following its creation in 1948, the FVPL, Yaba, used to be the envy of other West African nations especially due to its cutting-edge technology and expertise in manufacturing vaccines in needed quantity whenever required. Rabbies, small pox, yellow fever and even other more ruthless vaccine-preventable diseases, the laboratory had the wand to prevent, and if need be, extinguish them at the time, a fact recently confirmed by President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof. Mike Ogirima.
The entrance into the old vaccine lab For instance, during the yellow fever outbreak in Nigeria between 1986 and 1987, a scientist, identified simply as Jose, who worked in the lab at the time, told our correspondent that other affected states across the federation came to the laboratory to get vaccines.
A report by the United States National Library of Medicine stated that in 1950, Nigeria had a record of 67.2 cases of smallpox per 100,000, but that shortly after, the incidence had dropped to 29.7 cases due to the production of over five million doses of vaccine at the FVPL in Yaba, leading to the eradication of the ailment at the time.
Even when smallpox resurfaced in Ibadan in 1957, it was quickly contained by emergency vaccination. And when it came up again in Abakaliki (now the capital of Ebonyi State) in 1967, when the population of eastern Nigeria was about 12 million, targeted vaccination, courtesy of the vaccines produced at the lab in Yaba, helped to contain the spread and save many lives.
Since then, Nigeria has not had any incidence of smallpox. https://punchng.com/nigeria-blows-billions-of-dollars-on-vaccine-import-as-lab-rots-away/ Federal Vaccines Production Laboratory located in Yaba, Lagos

Beancounter94: More like FCT does not have enough money, and there is looting too.
FCT used to raise money from parking meters to supplement its income some 8 years ago, until someone got a court order to stop it.
Also, we don't pay something called a council tax. Many cities in the UK...residents pay something called a council tax which can be as high as 85,000 to 100000 naira. (I know, Nigeria cannot be compared to the UK eh, we are poor)...but that money goes into providing essential services such as street light, transport, etc.
The oyel money that we all rely on is not enough for all of us. Which is why you that is shouting Hausas and Fulani...is your state capital well lit all over? The reason is simple...there isn't enough money to do the job.(apart from Lagos maybe, and even Lag is not well lit all over). Because your tax to gdp ratio is too low and because the oil price has not been high enough to sustain us for nearly 9 years, if not longer.
States and the FCT need to be innovative in raising money not just for streetlights , but for public services, especially in the cities. And Nigerians too need to put pressure on their leaders to make sure the money is used well to ensure that their cities are run well.(The court case I referred to earlier may have stopped corruption in the parking meter system, but then it also threw out the baby with the bathwater)
(This is not a supporting Buhari message...personally, I think the minister of FCT should be more of a professional than a polticial somebodi. APC continued with the same old same old.Ironically, the last really good FCT minister we had was El-Rufai.) Nigeria VAT is very low should be around 20%, there is no cattle tax, council tax, housing tax and road tax all these taxes are collected every month by UK local council to provide local services |

Covid19 effect on governance, well being, ways of life, what we consume is global, some countries are still battling with recession not even thinking about other aspect of governance. If Nigeria government and private sector can work together to some extent improve the economy, reduce hardship by people, it will be commendable. Why not invest in talent? Tesla, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook and Google are more valuable than all the oil and gold companies combined. Ghana exports $2 billion of Cocoa to Belgium and Belgium process the Cocoa into confectionery and export $35 billion worth of products , creating jobs and not poverty. Nigerians must invest in talent to industrialized agriculture, enough of this subsistence farming and cattle herding in 2021. |
