I haven't tried IELTS but I took TOEFL in December 2009 and with just a week of preparation, I scored 104 out of 120 on the iBT. The exam is simple. Just know the question format, use Barrons software and you're game.

@ Nknight, even if you are on a full scholarship, you MUST still show proof of financial ability. Most scholarships and funding are often performance dependent. You should be able to show the consular that in an instance where the funding becomes unavailable, you can still continue with your education. On the other hand, if the funding is stated on your I-20, you may not even be asked for financial proof. Please get a sponsor and the financial documents to be on a safe side. The sponsor need not be related to you. Think of a way to explain the relationship.-

Maybe the admission process for undergrad is not so strenous but I tell you, if you got to write the GRE, TOEFL, SOP and send in tons of applications as is the case with grad school especially for research degrees, you need no man to tell you that you gotta be serious when you get there finally. Thanks for the advice. I hope everyone heeds to it. It's amazing how desperate folks get when it comes to travelling out of naija (even to sudan, some don't mind). Mission almost impossible cos most schools would normally gives out scholarship to current International Students.Most Scholarships that are given out for prospective students are for postgraduate student.
Most people back in Nigeria always believe that schooling in US is just like bread and butter.Hell no,u must have your money cos schools are getting expensive day by day cos of recession.Even Community colleges that are cheaper before is now between $4000-$6000 per semester depending on the state.My best bet for you is to look at your bugdet if u can afford to send him to school then do so or  file for him.
In addition some schools don't require SAT and TOEFL from Nigerian anymore so just apply directly to the school of your choice.

Kindly do your research by reading this thread from page 1 to the end.We can't afford to go back on issues like that anymore cos it has been treated here times without number.

Hmmm, I agree that the recession may have changed th funding scenario for undergraduates but there are still a few scholarship opportunities for international students so it's not "mission almost imposssible". I got a dude heading to Howard for fall 2010 and he got half scholarship. Check out this link:

I have a younger cousin in Naija that wants to come to the States for tertiary education. I'm not sure he's really that strong academically, as he had some problems with remedial classes @ FUTO. But family is really getting on me to help him cross, because in the their minds, when you come the US, everything magically becomes better. So I want to give him a chance.
Please I need advice on the general requirements for Nigerian students seeking post secondary education in the US (or UK). In other words, what should he start doing on his end?

If he has good WAEC results, let him start preparing for the SAT and TOEFL tests. Search for a good community college or university in the US that offer scholarships to international students. There are a few schools that could give him a scholarship with a good SAT score. But if he does not perform well in those standardized tests, then he had better stay back in naija and get his first degree. A lizard in Nigeria can not become an aligator in US.

Check Howard University in Washington DC. They offer great packages for international students. You could also check out schools in your current location.

@tos4jesus, check www.msinus.com and pick a school from the many that are available. You can also access the schools based on rank, acceptance rate, cut-off scores for TOEFL and GRE, and also for funding opportunities. Since you are going in for a research degree, you may want to consider applying to schools that offer financial aid for Masters studies. It'll help reduce your costs. Need more info? @ All, please all those going in for Fall 2010 can we start discussing, admission offers, arrival of I-20's and scheduling of Interview appointments. I am still waiting for an admission decision from three schools though I got an offer from a university in Oklahoma for Phd Chem Engr. and the required amount yearly is $25,000. Any suggestions as to what amount range my sponsor should have in his account? Also my sponsor is my uncle ( we share the same last name) and he intends to stand in as my guardian. Would this raise a red flag?

Where did you get that information from? Some schools in US might be more expensive than schools in the UK but on a general note, grad school in US is cheaper than in the UK. You did not state your major so there is little I can say. What did you study? What schools in the US do you hope to apply to? What was your graduating gpa? Are you going in for a research degree or a non-thesis degree? These and many more I ask through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Excluding credit card? Well if you have a domiciliary account in GTB or you know someone that has one, you can raise a foreign draft. But it can only be done at their head office in VI. I'll advise you walk to the nearest skye bank, pick up a prepaid Visa card and end your problems. Just my 2cents.

I have been admitted to study petroleum engineering in Louisiana. Still waiting to hear from some other schools but this school has some solid industry links (especially with oil services companies like schlumberger) so I am more than happy to attend it. Plus its not too expensive.

My Stats: GPA:~ 3.5 or Second Class Upper (64%) in Mechanical Engineering; GRE: 760 Q; 550 V; 5.0 AWA; One year work experience as a mechanical engineer & One year materials research (structural adhesives) all completed in England.

My brother! Congrats on your admission. LSU Pet Engr. is very good and the department has very strong links with the Oil and Gas Industry in Louisiana and Texas. So that's a big one. I'll suggest you start your visa application pronto! Once again, big congrats.

even if it is very expensive, the way is see it, its an investment. The USC brand name itself does almost half the job. Plus there is an option to get your MS without a thesis, which is want i want to do.

My guy, if you're going for an engineering degree, Penn State is the place oh. I think it's more prestigioius than USC for engineering grad and career placement for most departments are between 90-98%. Just my own 2cents.

Thanks. I'm quite confident I'll secure an admit with aid at one of the others. Looks like the financial aid situation is not so good as a result of the recession because two years ago, all admitted PhD candidates received full financial aid at the same school. The amount required for tuition and living expenses ain't so much though. What are you considering as concerns yours?

If you are into pet, I think conocophilips has some research facilities somewere around there, and might worth looking into for job or research funding opportunities.

Thanks. The Chemical Engineering department has strong ties with Conoco Phillips in Oklahoma. That is one of the reasons I considered the school in the first place. Like I said earlier on, I'm still waiting on the others though Oklahoma was top on my priority list so I might end up there.

Oklahoma State University, Stillwater. for Phd in Chemical Engineering.

I received an email from the department today stating that they would not be providing financial aid due to limited funds. I'm quite disappointed because I share similar research interest with the Graduate co-ordiantor at the department. I think NKnight was right about the funding situation. May take a semester or two before one can secure such and that would be based on exemplary performance in which case a TA might be most readily available.

I'm still waiting on the other four schools. I won't send in an acceptance yet just in case I get funding at any of the  others.

You had better fight for your right, except there's something fishy about your intended trip. If the embassy could issue you the visa and you did not break any immigration law, then why the hell shouldn't you travel? Don't let go of any of your hard earned cash. Ask to speak with their CIO, if that does not work, create a scene. (a good one oh!)

Where have you been bro? I missed your presence on this thread. A lot of newbies now, The process has been a hell of an experience. My undergrad transcripts was finally sent out on the 26th of Jan but following up on the schools ain't been easy cos I ended up applying to six! Anyway, I'm hoping to hear from them before April. What school are you applying to and what's your major? You should consider taking the TOEFL to make up for your low verbal score. I think the visa interview process is much easier than the application for admission.

Looks like you got alot of cash to throw around. Additional score reports are now $23 per school. You can save yourself the $92 expense by choosing the four schools while you register for the exam. Just an advice.

I should be through by June 2010 though I intend going for an MSc. Chemical Engineering in US by august this year. I'm expecting a decision this month as regards my application. I'm interested in the Environment Engineering aspect of Chem. Engr. Can anyone please advice on what certifications I need and areas/opportunities I can explore? Your comments would be highly appreciated.

Yeah, though it is clearly stated on the ETS website that online payments from Nigeria are not accepted. I used a Skye bank pre-paid Visacard. The online payment method is faster and you get to see your scores online before you receive your official score report.

@ Ldales, If you registered for the exam online with a Mastercard or Visacard, then you should have an online profile. If you don't have one already, then create one at www.toefl.org. I could view my scores online 11 working days after I took the test. You can also print the unofficial and use for the embassy interview. Goodluck.
