I used an invitation though I was not asked to present the letter. I just filled it in my DS 160 online.

I got my visa yesterday.

This is how my interview went:

Me: Goodmorning
Consular: Hi, can I have your application?
(I hand over passport, appointment and DS 160 confirmation)
Consular: (typing away on his system) What is the purpose of your trip?
Me: I'm going on vacation
Consular: Where in the US are you going to?
Me: California
Consular: Where in Carlifornia?
Me: (mentioned city)
Consular: How long would you be staying?
Me: 25 days
Consular: Where do you work?
Me: (told him)
Consular: What do you do at your company?
Me: (Told him)
Consular: How much do you earn monthly?
Me: (Told him)
Consular: Have you travelled before nd where?
Me: Yes, to the UAE
Consular: For what?
Me: Vacation last December
Consular: Are you married
Me: NO (in a bold tone)
Consular: Do you plan to do any business in the US during your visit?
Me: NO (in a bolder tone)
(Consular keeps typing and hands over slip to me showing the pickup address for my visa).

None of my documents were checked. I ensured all my answers were precise and exactly as I had filled it in the DS 160 online. My interview lasted for about 2mins in all. Despite the fact that I'm 26, single, with no other ties to Nigeria asides my job, I still got it. Truth is, travel experience, composure, consistency in answers and profile of your employer are good enablers. And most importantly, the oga patapata at the topmost layer!

This was how the interview went....after a very long wait.

V.O: Can I have your passport (very staright face)
Me:Yes(passed the passport to him)
V.O: dropped the passport(He didn't even bother opening the passport at all)
Why are you travelling?
Me: to visit my uncle and his family
V.O: where?
Me:I answer
V.O:where do you work?
Me:Ministry of xxxxx under Nysc(I didn't abbreviate oo)
V.O:how long are you staying?
Me: 6days (I got this logic from this trend)
V.O: where have you travelled to before?
Me:told hime
V.O: are you travelling alone?
Me: yes
V.O: Are you married?
Me: No but I have a gf.
V.O: Pick up your visa.

All this was exaactly 32seconds.I know because I purposely timed myself.He didn't ask for any document by the way. I really want to thank God and you guys. All the best to all those going for their interview. May God's favour go with you.

Gbenge 77: sometime ago, i witnessed the US CBP grill a Nigerian Guy at BWI,he claimed he had been invited by a friend in the US.I left the place with him still being grilled,and i suspect he was eventually turned back.They sometimes have an issue with young guys being invited by friends.I just thought i should draw your attention to that.However,you seem to be quite prepared for the interview.Ensure that you approach the co with a positive attitude.And,do not appear desperate for a visa.Lets see how it goes.Btw,are you married?

Guys, my interview is on the 19th and I have the following:

1. 6 months bank statement with over a million as balance.

2. 6 months payslip detailing salary payments

3. Letter of introduction from my employer (I work for a top multinational), stating I will be going on vacation and even indicating where I would be staying.

4. Letter of employment.

5. Letter of invitation from childhood friend who is a US citizen. Also attached is a copy of the data page of his passport.

6. Itinerary for trip-showing what I plan to do during the three weeks I would be staying

7. Passport photographs and other required documents.

I guess I'm good to go. Kindly help review. Btw, I'm only 26yrs old and I'll be going to California. Been to the UAE once for vacation and that's all.

My morale is pretty high and I'm trusting God for success with this. Any tips you think would help would be appreciated.

I intend going on vacation to the US in May. I'm 26, single and I work for a top multinational with income in the six digit range. I have only been to Dubai. I also work part-time with my dad's company as a consultant (though I'm not yet a board member).

I intend to visit friends in California (would be putting up with them) and I'm also trying to schedule an interview with a Professor at University of Georgia, and another at UCLA.

With my profile, am I good to go? Or how best can I prove ties to Nigeria? I just want to visit and come back to Nigeria to work. Please advise.

Well, as for accommodation, you would want to stay close to the metro. You get to spend less on transportation if you use the metro.

Ensure your hotel is close to a metro station. When you get to Dubai, you can get the metro cards at any station and use to visit any of the malls. The metro saves you on a lot.

As for places to visit, you can visit the malls (Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Marina Mall, Ibn Battuta Mall, etc). There might be a tour agency attached to your hotel so you can also book for a city tour (it might be cheaper to hire a taxi and negotiate with the driver considering you are going with family).

Whatever you do, do not miss Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates! Itz a fantastic experience. The Desert Safari tour is also a WOW experience but might not be advisable for kids (the rides could get really bumpy in the desert).

You may also visit the Atlantis(The Lost Chambers) which is close to the beach too. Your kids would sure love this!

For shopping, you may want to shop in Deira (things are cheaper in this area) but as someone rightly advised, avoid Nigerians hanging around. If you choose to shop in malls, then be ready to spend. Things are quite cheap in Deira and you can also get quality stuff there too.

If you want to have extra fun, you can visit Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi.

Having fun in Dubai is all about how much you are willing to spend. Dubai is a beautiful place. You sure will enjoy your trip.

Yes. I used them last Christmas. But remember that Etihad flies to Abu Dhabi and then you travel on their coach to Dubai.

Once the 60-day amnesty is over, he will wish he returned. Dubai is no place for husslers. Whatever you do, you'll want to keep it legal.

Omo babe, it is not a must but I would advise you do. Room rates tend to be cheaper when you book online than when you book at the hotel.

Also be careful about location. You would be better off staying close to a metro station than far off. Metro is cheaper than taxis.

blink182: I know you are trying to help but you should make it clear that this site is for people who want to enter the uae through Abu dhabi and not Dubai before they make a terrible mistake.

Yes, they enter through Abu Dhabi but Etihad provides a luxury coach that would take them from Abu Dhabi Intl airport to Chelsea Towers in Dubai.

Apart from the fact that it comes cheaper (i.e. flying with Etihad), it's also a nice experience. Personally, I do not like the airport in Dubai. Too much crowd, unlike the one in Abu Dhabi. I spent only ten minutes getting through Passport control at Abu Dhabi but in Dubai, people spend up to one/two hours. Maybe because it was Christmas but all the same...

For those that want to fly direct to Dubai, I can recommend a very good agent (Monseg Travels) for visa processing. You can google them up.

With $1000 PTA, you are just fine. Immigration at MMIA can be nasty but keep your cool and don't fret.

I was surprised that there was only one passport control point in Abu Dhabi after which nobody checked anything else (save the normal eye scan).

Dubai is a beautiful place. You should visit but please hold enough money with you.

@ poster, whether you are extravagant or not depends on your income. It may be a bit difficult since your wife doesn't work but here are a few tips that could help you save:

1. Track your expenses! - set out a monthly budget and expense book (or you can do this on excel) to plan and monitor your expenditure.

2. Use a scale of preference to determine which expenditure comes first. Remember, there is a big difference between WANTS and NEEDS. Focus on the essentials.

3. After prioritizing your monthly expenses, pick each one and discuss with your wife on ways you can manage that expense better. Remember, two heads are better than one. Focus on reducing each expense without necessarily settling for less. You may even realise that on some expenses, you can get better value with lower costs (utility bills, etc)

4. Be disciplined in the way you utilize your resources. For instance, instead of running your generator 24/7, only run it when you know it would be of more use to the family. If you have internet bills, choose a suitable package. Same applies for DSTV (at least there is now the GOTV option). Explore all options and choose one that is reasonable.

5. Pay yourself first! So you get your monthly salary and then start paying other people: PHCN, DSTV, Internet, etc...what happened to paying yourself first? This is where savings comes in. Set up an automatic debit from your salary account. You could sign-up with Mansard Insurance or start a fixed deposit. Ensure a percentage of your monthly income goes into savings (I do 50-60% but I recommend you start with 30-40%). Do not spend any salary without paying yourself first! If you believe in tithing, then remember not to rob God too.

In all you do, carry your wife along. Remember that it takes the two of you to make it work. I have said all this on the assumption that you are currently spending 50-90% of your income. If you earn reasonably well, then I think you are just fine. You may still want to watch your expenses.
