Flying to San Francisco from Lagos via Houston.

After a two hour delay before take-off, pilot announced stop over in Florida to meet International Air Regulations regarding number of flight crew members (apparently, one of the pilots/co-pilots could not get on the flight).

We arrived Miami and after 45 mins, took off to Houston.

Here I was, waiting to be cleared at the POE while my connecting flight to San Francisco was to depart in 15mins. I finally got cleared, but missed the flight. United had already prepared a pass for the next flight as they knew forehand about the challenges.

With three hours to go, I spent time catching up with some Dutch guys who I met at the waiting area. Not so bad at all.

I would rather not miss a flight by being late to the airport. Painful when you have to chunk out more bucks for something that could have been avoided.

2. Aliko Dangote made the highest individual and corporate donation to the PDP presidential election campaign in 2003. For your information and anybody who cares to know, Aliko enjoyed presidential waiver of billions of naira immediately after the 419 election.
3. In 2008, Dangote donated cement to the value of N3 billion for the construction of the national secretariat of the PDP in Abuja.
4. Till today, he remains the largest ever contributor to the party's activities.

While I respect this man as an entrepreneur that provides thousands of jobs for Nigerians, his influence on the PDP is worrisome. The ethics and controversies within his organisation as an employer of labour is also known to be distasteful.

Now this price drop would be applauded by all as GEJ/FG's effort. Just another strategy to gain popularity in preparation for 2015.

I will give my vote to a man that I know has a mind of his own and listens to the voice of the people. It's time for change Nigeria. We cannot keep being tossed to and fro by any person(s). We have had enough-from FRSC New Plate numbers, to the scam Drivers' Licensing process, to the Immigration recruitment where we lost some of our brothers, to the new import tariffs on automobiles, to the many numerous scams and fraud that has characterized the government of the PDP.

Burkina Faso has risen. Time for us to rise!!!

etunoman76: Nigeria summoned the Egyptian ambassador Thursday to protest the maltreatment of a 17-year-old Nigerian by Egypt’s national carrier, Egypt Air.

The foreign ministry summoned the Egyptian ambassador, Ashraf Salama, to formally lodge a protest over the treatment meted out to Joshua Abdul-Azeez, and demanded an unreserved apology from the Egyptian Government.

The Minister of State 1, Foreign Affairs, Viola Onwuliri, accused Egypt Air of “child-abuse” for starving the young Nigerian of food for three days, after wrongly routing his air ticket.

She said it was unacceptable that Egypt Air had failed to respond to repeated enquiries from the Nigeria Embassy in Cairo on what led to the treatment of the Nigerian.

The Nigerian authorities had sought explanation from the airline on reports that the Nigerian passport of the 17-year-old Nigerian was torn to shreds by a staff of Egypt Air in Istanbul, Turkey.

Ms. Onwuliri expressed dismay that the Egyptian ambassador’s initial reaction to the issue was to question the authenticity of local media reportage on the Nigerian who was treated like “a common criminal’’ by Egypt Air.

“Egypt and Nigeria are friendly countries and they have built this friendship over the years, but I don’t think we should allow things like this to happen,” she said.

“You (the ambassador) are worried about four pages of newspaper report on the issue, but I am surprised that you are not worried that a Nigerian passport was torn by an official of Egypt Air.

“I am surprised that you are not worried that a young boy, a Nigerian citizen, was left without food and water by an airline operated by your government.

“I am really surprised at you Mr. Ambassador,’’ she said.

The minister told the ambassador that the Nigerian government would not hesitate to demand compensation for the citizen when it concludes investigation on the matter.

“One Nigerian citizen is important to us and part of our multi-track diplomacy is that every Nigeria everywhere must be fully accounted for.

“The young boy in questions was going back to school in Ukraine and he complained here that he was issued the wrong ticket.

“Did you (Egypt Air) employ people who cannot read tickets and issue correct codes even after complaints,’’ she said.

The minister therefore demanded a formal explanation from the Egyptian government, which had 100 per cent control of Egypt Air.

In his defence, the Egyptian ambassador earlier blamed the Nigerian media for escalating a “small incident’’ involving a Nigerian passenger and Egypt Air.

Mr. Salama said that a Nigerian newspaper devoted four-pages to the issue.

He said the embassy had contacted Egypt Air and his home government on the incident but had yet to receive a formal report.

“We have respect for our Nigerian brothers and if this incident really happened, we will see who is responsible and punish accordingly.

“But we must taste and verify the credibility of the news report on the issue before we make a judgment,’’ he said.

Mr. Salama called for restraint from the Nigerian authorities on the issue, saying “I do not think this incident should escalate so much to affect our good relations built over the years.

“We have been supporting and standing by each other and I think we should continue that way,’’ he said.

He told the foreign minister that so many Nigerians travel to Egypt every day, adding “we have 16 flights daily and seven daily flights from Cairo to Abuja.’’

All this talk. Suspend the airline from operations in our territory pending further investigations. With issues like this, Nigeria needs to make a bold statement.

The Shifting Balance of Internet Power

For years, Westerners pictured it as the creation of a snake charmer from a Persian souk. But this week, when the Alibaba Group prices its IPO, even the most indolent observer should get a major jolt. If anyone wants proof of the manner in which the balance of power in the technology world is shifting from the U.S. towards China, the IPO of Alibaba offers irrefutable evidence.

Forget about the fact that Alibaba’s offering could be the largest IPO ever staged in the U.S.; forget that Alibaba’s cash balance will swell by at least another $20 billion; forget the idea that Jack, the first name of the company’s principal founder, now joins the other twelve figure first names of the internet – Larry, Mark, Pony and Jeff; just look at the numbers and ponder the implications.

After the IPO, the Twitterati estimate that Alibaba will probably have a market value of around $200 billion! This will make it the world’s fifth most-valuable TMT (Technology, Media and Telecom) company behind Apple ($614 billion), Google ($387 billion), Microsoft ($382 billion) and China Mobile ($259 billion). Peer a little closer and this list reveals more. The top fifty TMT companies, after Alibaba’s IPO, will have a combined market value of about $6.1 trillion. Thirty years ago U.S. companies accounted for the vast majority of this number. Today the U.S. share has fallen to about 66 percent. The Chinese share, which was smaller than a ladle of rice 30 years ago, has climbed to 10 percent.

A similar compilation of Internet companies is even more riveting. After the Alibaba IPO, the aggregate value of the world’s largest, fifty internet companies will be about $1.7 trillion of which about $530 billion is accounted for by Chinese companies formed in the past 15 years. Today, 15 of the world’s 50 most valuable – and imposing – internet companies are Chinese which, beyond Alibaba, include Tencent, Baidu, JD.com, VIP Shops, Qihoo and CTrip. Add up the combined value of a handful of companies brewed in the U.S. – EBay, Twitter, Netflix and Priceline – and you would still require about another $20 billion in order to match Alibaba’s market capitalization.

Beneath the surface, there are some less obvious trends. Thanks to the market opportunity on their back doorstep, Chinese internet companies have not wandered far from home it will be far easier for them to expand in the U.S. – organically and through acquisition or investments - than for their American counterparts to do the same in China. The U.S. companies will point accusatory fingers at regulators but, in the past decade, most of their problems in China have been self-inflicted – selection of the wrong people; the assumption that what worked in America will work elsewhere; and, of course, a reliance on English as the mother tongue. In addition the U.S. companies have had to contend with the formidable Chinese work ethic that sometimes makes Silicon Valley seem like the French Riviera in August.

The fact that the Chinese companies listed among the global TMT top 50 are a group of internet businesses, the two major domestic carriers – China Mobile, China Telecom – and Hon Hai, the electronic manufacturing company, should cause other technology leaders restless nights. Just because no Chinese semiconductor, networking, enterprise software or storage companies are included in the 2014 list is no guarantee that this will hold true in 2024.

handie: I'm a final year student and honestly, my GP ain't as good as I wish. I'm contemplating dropping some courses and rewriting them next session to boost my GP. please can I resit those exams and still go for NYSC that same year? I talked to my course adviser about it and he said i'll be able to go with the next available batch once my result is out. pls is this possible? what is your advice to me? N.B: I'm 20 years old

I was in your shoes years ago and chose to stay back an extra year. Did it pay off? No it didn't, because I ended up with a 2.2 despite making that decision (my fault though).

Nevertheless, I would still advise you stay back and graduate with a 2.1. It is becoming increasingly competitive in the job marketplace and while a 2.1 is not a sure guarantee of a job, a 2.2 would not help you get opportunities to prove your worth.

Grades are just a benchmark or criteria for screening applicants these days (both for jobs and graduate school). What matters most is what you can deliver and you can only show that when you get the opportunity to be heard.

So my advise is stay back, graduate with a 2.1 and keep developing yourself to stay competitive. A 2.2 does not define you (I know very intelligent folks that graduated with a 2.2 who would outsmart even 1st class degree holders) but can limit the opportunities available to you.

And if graduate school is your next destination, you probably would not be able to get into top grad schools in Europe & North America with a 2.2. Don't do yourself this disservice.

Most of the people who I could have graduated with are not where I am today (7 years down the road). So please remember this whenever you do anything- "YOU DO NOT HAVE MATES". Life is a race between you and you alone. Finish your race knowing you did your best. 5 years in the corporate world has taught me even more. I see people come and go, some move faster up the ladder, some still struggling at entry level. This picture changes everyday.

We recently recruited a guy I graduated with in 2008 and he just got an entry level role. By organizational structure, he reports to my work level which means I could have been his boss. So remember, there are no mates in life. This picture can be different in another 5 years, even reverse.

I'm not asking if I should cancel my wedding because that has been decided I am only asking how do you go about canceling it and letting invited guests know that this wedding will no longer hold.

My ex-fiancee's friends have already paid for the aso-ebi, the wedding invitation has been printed, the hall for the reception booked but there will be no wedding. My wedding was supposed to hold this December but I'd rather commit suicide than marry this woman.

I won't go into details about what she did but understand that no man cancels his wedding except it's serious. My parents have been informed about the new development but her parents are yet to be informed.

She has refused to tell them, insisting that I do it since I canceled the wedding. But her parents are the least of my worries. How do I tell excited family members, friends and colleagues that this wedding will no longer hold? Where do I start?

I was once in your shoes and had to tell her parents as she refused to tell them and instead chose to disappear to the UK.

It is simple. Once you get to the point you consider cancelling the wedding, you shouldn't be bothered about sentimental reactions.

Step 1: Go to see her parents and let them know that you are calling it off. I advise you go with one of your parents or family member so they understand that your family is aligned too.

Step 2: Communicate to those you invited via email or SMS that the wedding has been called off and apologize for the setback it might have on their schedule or finances (assuming they have purchased asoebi, etc)

Step 3: List out all the financial commitments you have made wrt the wedding (booking hall space, caterer, etc) and start discussion with the vendors on this. You might have to compensate them for whatever they have spent. Do this tactically so that they no not deceive you by claiming they have spent all you gave. Worst case scenario, you might be able to recover 50% of all you've invested.

Step 4: Do not go about explaining to everyone why you called it off. If asked, just say you cannot talk about it at the moment. Trust me, people would respect that and move on.

Step 5: Don't turn back. You would be a dog to go back after doing all the above.

Any which way, Life goes on. I moved on with my life when I had to do this and trust me, I do not regret one bit.

Rather a happy man than a depressed being all in the name of marriage....

Why do Nigerians think sex talk is "disrespectful"? This is a major issue in most marital homes and yet when it's time to talk about it, we act like it's unholy or not necessary.

One Young World is a charity that stages an annual Summit, bringing together the brightest young people from around the world.
The summit will gather over 1,300 young future leaders from 190 countries at the Sandton Convention Centre to share their visions, views and ideas to create practical and achievable commitments for positive change.

Unlike any other event, the One Young World Summit gives delegates the kind of media platform ordinarily afforded only to those who lead countries and corporations. Delegates speak alongside respected global figures selected for their work and insight into matters affecting the whole world, and the youth in particular.

Last year, former US president Bill Clinton addressed the delegates in Pittsburgh, USA, where Kofi Annan, Former UN secretary general, Sir Bob Geldof, musician and activist, Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Jamie Oliver, chef & TV personality, Jack Dorsey, founder of Twitter & CEO of Square among others served as One Young World counselor.

The above topic is one that I know would interest many people but little information is available as regards this hence my opening this thread.

I will want us to discuss on the various mortgage finance options available to individuals (both salary earners and business owners) and what the modus operandi is for such schemes. What Mortgage Finance Institutions exist currently? What are their rates, tenors and payment plans? Which is the best? Which institution is stable, with respect to interest rate stability year on year?

Inputs from those who currently work with Mortgage Finance Institutions OR have a mortgage facility running currently would be very much appreciated.

Stop replying kids that know nothing about telecoms service quality in Nigeria.

This is naiaraland where majority just follow the trend. They all hate MTN because others are saying so. Ask them specifically what MTN has done to them and there is absolutely nothing bad they are experiencing with MTN that is unique to MTN. Others have issues too.

QoS report conducted by NCC always puts MTN as 1st or 2nd( service quality) in almost all the location across NIGERIA. And these tests are done randomly so no "magomago".

They want freebies, MTN gave them freebies.
They want promos, MTN had the biggest promo ever.
They want cheap tariffs,MTN calls and data tariffs are quite similar to what the others offer.

Why the hatred? Because they have been gradually told lies about MTN and DSTV regularly some started believing it.
