CultureRe: Wait!! Before You Marry That Your Igbo Girlfriend, You Have To Read This!! by Superbrain(m): 6:27am On Oct 18, 2012
@ poster, whether you are extravagant or not depends on your income. It may be a bit difficult since your wife doesn't work but here are a few tips that could help you save:

1. Track your expenses! - set out a monthly budget and expense book (or you can do this on excel) to plan and monitor your expenditure.

2. Use a scale of preference to determine which expenditure comes first. Remember, there is a big difference between WANTS and NEEDS. Focus on the essentials.

3. After prioritizing your monthly expenses, pick each one and discuss with your wife on ways you can manage that expense better. Remember, two heads are better than one. Focus on reducing each expense without necessarily settling for less. You may even realise that on some expenses, you can get better value with lower costs (utility bills, etc)

4. Be disciplined in the way you utilize your resources. For instance, instead of running your generator 24/7, only run it when you know it would be of more use to the family. If you have internet bills, choose a suitable package. Same applies for DSTV (at least there is now the GOTV option). Explore all options and choose one that is reasonable.

5. Pay yourself first! So you get your monthly salary and then start paying other people: PHCN, DSTV, Internet, etc...what happened to paying yourself first? This is where savings comes in. Set up an automatic debit from your salary account. You could sign-up with Mansard Insurance or start a fixed deposit. Ensure a percentage of your monthly income goes into savings (I do 50-60% but I recommend you start with 30-40%). Do not spend any salary without paying yourself first! If you believe in tithing, then remember not to rob God too.

In all you do, carry your wife along. Remember that it takes the two of you to make it work. I have said all this on the assumption that you are currently spending 50-90% of your income. If you earn reasonably well, then I think you are just fine. You may still want to watch your expenses.

Cheers!

From experience, older ladies are more understanding and respectful. I have only dated a lady younger than me once and trust me, it wasn't a fantastic experience. The older ladies I have dated are so homely and respectful that sometimes we forget the age difference and the issue of age only comes up when one partner chooses to mention it.

Here is my take-if you and your partner are comfortable with the age difference, then it's fine. As a guy, make sure that whenever you have disagreements, the age issue never comes up. I'm dating a lady older than I am and itz been fun.

Christianity EtcRe: Church Testimonies- To The Glory Of God Or Testifier's Glory? by Superbrain(m): 5:11pm On Feb 24, 2012
If anyone chooses to glorify the testifier or God, it's up to them. Even if the testifier shares for self-glory, he has then chosen to reward himself. Those that testify to God's glory are overcomers. More testimonies await them.

In my church, no one is allowed to testify in person. Testimonies are submitted to the church office, vetted and then read to the congregation. Some churches will realize the importance of doing this later. It helps to check so many things.

If anyone chooses to thank God for even the most insignificant of things, why should you have a problem with that. In all things, we give Him thanks. Leave those that do wrong to their own judgement.

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Help Needed, I Just Lost My Job Recently by Superbrain(m): 6:16am On Feb 19, 2012
@ OP,

I sympathize with you but you need to be sincere to yourself at this point. BTW, please be careful with what you do with the 800k. Like someone rightly said, not everyone is here with good intentions. You have received a lot of advice here but I will still give you a summary of hard facts and what you should consider doing.

1. MARRIAGE: It would be foolish of you to still think about having a wedding in your current circumstance. I would have loved to ask you what your financial plans (before you were laid off) were as regards the wedding because it seems you didn't have any. Anyway, you have to go ahead with the marriage but keep it low-keyed. Your best bet is to go to the registry and do it there. When you're back on your feet in the near future, you can always give your wife that special treat she deserves. Don't be conned into spending on a wedding. Now is the time to man-up.

2. BUSINESS: You have to tread carefully when it comes to business. Among all the options people gave here, I'm fully in support of the mini supermarket thing. There are various things you can do bro. You can start a car wash biz, you can get some good artisans together and manage them (vulcanizers, mechanics, etc). Trust me, you have a lot you can do with your capital. I will advise you do not spend more than 400k on any business you intend to start. Do your research. Find a need in your location, area of specialization, or generally and meet it. And forget that crap about 'having only banking experience'. You have to adapt to your current situation.

3. RENT: GET OUT OF THAT APARTMENT!!! It is financially suicidal at this point in your life to pay the 300k as rent next month. If you have that money set aside already (asides the 800k) then maybe you can go ahead. Telling you to move to another cheap apartment in your current dilemma might be insensitive. Even if you find a 100k apartment, by the time you are billed for two years including agent fees, you might be spending close to the 300k you avoided paying. Remain in your current apartment if you have set aside the 300k previously (BTW, don't tell me you didn't even have any savings for your marriage before you were laid off). If 800k is all you have home and away, move to a far cheaper place ASAP and keep a tab on the rent and relocation costs (max 200k).

4. EXPENSES: You have to cut your daily and monthly expenses drastically. Pull up a pen and paper and start making those budget cuts. Now you understand what most country leaders have been facing in recent times. Cut all your excesses. Make provision for your wife's medicals too. Look for a government general hospital and get to know what medical costs you should expect. She can go for ante-natal there. Just make sure that your monthly expenses can be taken care off for the next 9 months (after you set aside rent, business capital, etc). Follow your new budget religiously.

5. JOB: If you still want to get another job (assuming you are not business inclined or too lazy to start a business), then map out a strategy. You worked in foreign operations, right? Pull up all your contacts, people you met/ have interacted with in your previous job. Call them and let them know the current situation and ask if they could be of any help. If you were a good chap, you might get some unusual favour which may be in form of a job or support for your business. If you must get another job, you have to be radical in your approach. Get a job that can help with your expenses. This would only be temporary as you will also be working out a better plan to get back on your feet.

6. NAIRALAND: Please do not ignore anyone here. Send your CV to anyone who asked you to but do not give money to anyone who comes up with a bogus idea or business partnership. 800k is a lot and trust me, you don't want to lose that money at this critical time. I'm saying this because I met someone here on NL who changed my life. I never believed his calibre would even bother with NAIRALAND. There are a lot of respectable people here.

Ultimately, God is everything. If you were not close to him before, now is the time but this time, Remain in HIM. More challenges are ahead but trust in Him and He will see you through.

You can send your CV to me: superbrainnl@gmail.com . I'm not promising anything but I'll see what I can do. BE STRONG!

CELL2ME2:
is that the only lies your pastor told u? u must be a child to believe that chip lie. he will not read to u the part of the bible that instruct on what the tithe should be used for? they wont tell u that wen u give 2 God wit the aim of getting back from him that u re trying the make God a bank wen u put that u must receive. its not so he. he gives to u to give not u given to him to receive cos he owns u and the money u ve. wake up and ask questions even if u cant read bible
Your ignorance may be forgived on earth but wait till you get to heaven. Like I said, why are you overly concerned about those who pay their tithes? Keep eating yours and let peace reign. All man will account for himself.

OmoPastor:
Lets not go off point.

Who is the poor? Is it the guy without money or the guy with impoverished mentality? Poverty is a spiritual incapacitation which results in a man's disability to produce anything from his spirit. Man is a spirit, he has a soul and lives in a body. when your spirit is disbled, rendered handicapped, distressed; you become poor.

Show me one place in the bible where Jesus gave money or materials to the poor even though He subscribed to it?

Do you know why he did not do that? cos the solution to the problem of the poor is not what you donate although its necessary to do so but if you really want to help the poor the solution is the Word of God first and then you can donate.

People will remain poor cos of their ignorance of the Word of God and their refusal of Gods kingdom financial principles.

And point of correction: NO ONE DONATES TO THE PASTOR!
Spot on bro. The general mindset of most people nowadays is that when they are giving in the church, they are enriching the Pastor. Even if the Pastor squanders God's resources on himself, is it for you to judge? The most important thing is that you gave from your heart to God.

Show me a tither and giver that is poor and lacks. You can never find one. Know why? Because by their acts, they justify their faith in the Almighty God, and they prosper.

faakay:
Hello folks

Donate to the poor and needy out there

A lot of children are dying out there. Instead of giving your 10% tithe to Pastors and Imams [false prophets & daylight robbery] using the bible and qua-ran to preach false in order to collect funds from them and enjoy their own lives.

Give it to beggars on the street, Charity Foundations etc.

God only wants your burnt offering, domestic animals that all.

Do not sell the truth but they are selling theirs, as you can see you will begin to know them gradually by yourself

Safe

Tell a friend to tell a friend
You are either a joker or obviously ignorant of God's word. Go and read Malachi 3:10 , "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it"

The tithe is to be given in the church. If God wanted otherwise, he would have instructed us to do so. I have noticed on NL that most people who have an issue with tithing and sowing seeds belong to one of three categories of people:

1. Those who do not pay their tithes and see no reason to give offerings and are trying to justify their actions.
2. Those who cannot come to terms with the fact that Christ died so that we may enjoy the benefits of eternal life.
3. Those whose poverty mindset would never make them appreciate prosperity (either evident in a pastor's life or that of an unbeliever).

The scriptures bear witness. If you have a problem with tithing, no one is compelling you to. Read Malachi 3: 8-9 and if you still have an issue with it, why not wait till judgement day to find out the truth than make a lot of fuss about it? Let sleeping dogs lie. Afterall, those who pay their tithes never complain about it because they understand the importance. If you feel your one-tenth should go to the orphanages, then give it to them. Every man shall answer for himself on the day of reckoning.

BTW, how did this make it to the front page? NL is becoming a big joke.

@Op
Rich Pastors?
"Rich Pastor" is a word that should contradict itself, an oxymoron. Any one who sacrifices his life to serve god or jesus should ,naturally, be expected to transcend the " growth by accumulation mindset". That is what should set them apart from the people they shepherd.  He should  live amongst his sheep, not way above them. Not so?  How does a pastor become rich? Kindly point out one Nigerian pastor that was rich before he became a pastor.Thats the real question, and pls dont pretend like you dont know.
You take from the poor, enlarge yourself, and you expect not to be despised?
What planet are you from?
Are you for real? Do you know how the Roman soldiers struggled for the garment of Christ before he was crucified? Do you know why? Get real bro. How can a Pastor minister the word of God to people if his life cannot be an evidence of what he preaches about?

@ topic, The answer is simple. The level of poverty being experienced by most Nigerians would never make them come to terms with the fact that men of God ought to prosper. The Pastor puts the word of God to work in his life and gets results. All most people do is complain and remain in the same situation forever.

The interview is a simple one. Mine lasted for about 25mins. You would be interviewed by a panel of 2-4 people. The first thing you must note here is that a lot of people have been invited for this stage and not many would make it to the assessment centre so give it your best shot. Go early to the interview venue and try to be as calm as possible. You would be asked same questions as you were asked during the phone interview but this time, they expect you to be more elaborate. Please maintain consistency and let your voice be clear. At this stage, you have to match your intelligence with your body language. Look them into their face when talking (please don't stare rudely) and let that confidence ooze out from you.

You would also be asked what you understand by uflp and what you know about Unilever, what you are currently doing/ been doing since NYSC, and others. Don't get yourself worked out about it. Be calm, confident and let the interviewers enjoy your presence.
All the best folks.
