Ecuador's foreign minister announced on Thursday that the country would grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, defying threats by the British government to storm the Ecuadorean Embassy and extradite Assange to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning in cases of alleged rape and sexual molestation.
"We have decided to grant political asylum to him," Ricardo Patino said at the end of a long televised statement from the Ecuadorean capital of Quito, where he criticized the U.S. and U.K. governments for failing to protect Assange from political persecution.
"The countries that have a right to protect Assange have failed him," Patino said. "[Assange] is victim of political persecution. ... If Assange is extradited to U.S., he will not receive a fair trial."
The foreign minister said that Ecuador asked Sweden to promise it would not extradite Assange to the United States, but Sweden refused.
"Asylum is a fundamental human right," Patino said, adding that "international law" overrides local laws, and that Assange has "the right not to be extradited or expelled to any country."
A crowd gathered outside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, where Assange, a 41-year-old Australian native, has been holed up since June, to hear the announcement. At least one protester was arrested.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office called Ecuador's decision to grant Assange asylum "regrettable."
"British authorities are under a binding obligation to extradite him to Sweden," a spokesman for the office said. "We shall carry out that obligation. The Ecuadorean government's decision this afternoon does not change that."
According to The Associated Press, Sweden summoned Ecuador's ambassador to Stockholm, calling the decision to grant asylum to Assange "unacceptable."
Moments before the announcement, Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa tweeted: "No one is going to terrorize us!"
It's unclear what will happen to Assange now. U.K. authorities say his asylum is a violation of his probation--and there is reason to believe he would be arrested if he tried to leave the embassy. "Assange is going to Sweden," Louise Mensch, a conservative member of the British Parliament, tweeted. "We are going to extradite him there

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Muslims to seek Allah’s intervention in the various challenges confronting nations of the world.
He said prayers should be made for divine intervention for nations facing civil strife, political instability and financial crisis.
Jonathan spoke yesterday during the breaking of the Ramadan fast with Muslim members of the diplomatic community at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“I wish to call on you while praying during this period and especially during the Night of Majesty, to pray for peace and security to reign and for Allah to guide the leaders and give them wisdom to work for the development of their respective countries,” he said.
The President prayed that this year’s Ramadan would imbue the peoples of the world with compassion and forgiveness to enable them surmount the challenges of conflicts and wars.
This, he added, is imperative in order to achieve global peace and harmony.
Jonathan observed that the month of Ramadan is a time for self denial, spiritual rejuvenation and recommittment to righteousness.
The acting Dean of the Diplomatic Corp who is also the Ambassador of Guinea in Nigeria urged Jonathan not to be discouraged by the spate of insecurity in the country.

The Action Congress of Nigeria today asked President Goodluck Jonathan to fire his Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, Dr Doyin Okupe, hand him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) for immediate prosecution and in addition apologise to Nigerians for appointing a person with an alleged criminal past as the Nation’s Public Affairs Spokesperson.

In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the Jonathan administration in its desperation to employ an “attack dog” to spearhead its onslaught against the opposition parties and other vocal opponents ended up outsourcing the very crucial and strategic position of projecting the public image and reputation of Nigeria to a person with no public reputation and a past steeped in corruption.

According to an online report, Dr Doyin Okupe, the newly appointed Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs is on the list of those being investigated by Nigeria’s anti-corruption body, the EFCC on account of a contract running into hundreds of millions of Naira obtained from the Benue State Governor while serving under President Obasanjo in a similar capacity as the chief spokesperson of that administration.

Rather than execute the project, the online report further claimed Dr. Okupe bolted with the over N200,000,000 (two hundred million Naira only) mobilization money, which he is believed to have invested in his ill-fated political ambition.

That President Goodluck Jonathan went ahead to appoint Dr Okupe as Public Affairs Specialist for the administration and by extension Nigeria despite his criminal background should not come as a surprise to any close observer of this administration as it only confirms the fatal attraction President Jonathan has for appointing or retaining tainted and damaged persons with shoddy pasts or questionable character to serve in his Government the party said.

According to the party, the revelation that Dr Okupe was appointed as the spokesperson of the FG while still under investigation and yet to answer charges bordering on criminal conversion of state funds definitely flies in the face of the rhetorics of this Government that fighting corruption is one of its cardinal goals and also an insult to the collective integrity of Nigerians especially given the cloudy circumstances under which Dr Okupe was relieved of a similar position by President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“The ill informed decision of President Jonathan to appoint as his chief image maker, a person who needs to be publicly prosecuted for alleged crime has once again confirmed that the Jonathan Government is deeply troubled about its public image and perception as a rudderless Government that is lost at sea with no compass. However President Jonathan is advised that no amount of spin done by one thousand spin doctors like Dr Doyin and his co-travellers will rescue the Government from public odium. Only performance and delivery, respect for the rule of law and the rights of Nigerians will change the perception”.

‘That a President of a country will approve the appointment of someone under criminal investigation to interface with the public on behalf of the Nigeria Government ridicules the Nigerian people.

The Action Congress of Nigeria therefore calls on President Jonathan today to fire Dr Doyin Okupe immediately, allow the EFCC to prosecute him [/b]and offer Nigerians an unpreserved apology for appointing someone who needs to be publicly prosecuted for alleged crime to interface with and on their behalf. The party simultaneously calls on Dr Doyin Okupe to immediately resign his appointment and defend himself against the alleged criminal charges.

[b]However in the event that none of these three things takes place in the next few days then Nigerians must come to terms with the fact that they are at the mercy of an insular Government that is comfortable in the company of fraudsters, crooks, black mailers and embezzlers, the party warned.

Losing an election would not be this painful if the interest of Nigerians was his priority. Indeed, it would have been Nigerians lamenting that their Candidate lost the election. The way Tunde Bakare is lamenting shows that he contested election for himself alone. He cries every sunday on pulpit instead of preaching salvation, sinfulness and repentance which are the core ordinances of the Gospel of Jesus. He has lost all the respect majority of us had for him. Its such a shame to other pastors.

Pastor Tunde Bakare, one of the fiercest critics of the Goodluck Jonathan administration, today continued his talk about the syndrome of personal insecurity/inferiority that afflicts the First Couple, adding that President Goodluck Jonathan should call for help.

In the latest installment of his political commentary from the pulpit, Mr. Bakare described Mrs. Patience Jonathan as seeking “aggressive compensation.” He ascribed the First Lady’s pursuit as arising from a sense of insecurity or inferiority that makes her wish to be
everywhere and also to lock down all positions for herself.

Titled “Personal Insecurity/Inferiority Can Abort Your Destiny Part II,” today’s sermon by the activist pastor focused on a general note, deviating from his habit of naming names. However, Mr. Bakare’s accustomed idiosyncrasy seemed to get the better of him when he quoted a Yoruba adage and then related its translated meaning to Mrs. Jonathan.

“You’ve been crowned a king and you’re still making voodoo to become great. What else do you want to become?” queried the pastor. He then stated that it made little sense that Mrs. Jonathan sought to be appointed a permanent secretary in Bayelsa State, ascribing her drive to insecurity. He added that “envy runs deep in the veins of the insecure.”

The talk elaborated on the attributes and signs manifested in an insecure person. Among these, said Pastor Bakare, was an insecure person’s readiness to harm others to secure a position. He added that the heart of an insecure person makes him seek to “create God” in his own image and not the other way round, adding that such a person believes that God can no longer adequately protect him in his new status. Mr. Bakare also asserted that an insecure person cannot stand others outperforming him.

Pastor Bakare said another attribute of an insecure person was “pretending to be who he is not,” adding that a dog cannot pretend to be a lion without his pretense being noticed by all. “[The insecure] think they can fake it to make it, but they remain fake,” he said. He chastised that “The nation is crumbling and you are pretending.” Then, in a hardly disguised reference to Mr. Jonathan, he said, “You cannot be who you are not. Call for help.”

Pastor Bakare admonished the congregation, “Do not entrust power in the hands of the insecure.” In a talk filled with biblical references, Mr. Bakare recalled, “I remember when President Jonathan became president [after the death of President Yar’Adua]. He said ‘I shall continue from where my mentor stopped’. Now he is asked to declare his asset (like his mentor) but he said, ‘That was then, and this is now. I don’t give a damn!”

In a censorious tone, Mr. Bakare stated, “That man had an agenda but you put it aside, and you dress up every day with gold in your pocket and hat on your head.” He cautioned that “empty hat and head will not transform the country.”

Listing other attributes of an insecure/inferior person, Mr. Bakare said they included “false humility,” a desire to control other humans, with those who appear difficult to control declared enemies, and the perception by insecure people that any favor done to them is a gesture to obtain something.

Mr. Bakare asked the congregation to pray against insecurity/inferiority, then listed “I, me, mine and myself” as the four cardinal points of an insecure person.
