Godwin2am: THE OPIUM AND THE PEOPLE Opium is a drug used to numb pain and help the patients sleep. The opium is like an anaesthetic. Anaesthetics are not curative, their function is to sedate a patient as he undergoes what could have been an unbearably painful treatment. Any patient given anaesthetics without curative procedures will soon become worse. "Religion is the opium of the people" is a famous statement of Karl Marx. This is true, but relative. In other words, religion was not meant to be an opiate: a drug that numbs your pain but never treats it. Religion was meant to facilitate your relationship with your creator and help you deal positively with the supernatural dimension of reality. Don't make it an opium because you become an addict if you do. You know what happens to addicts: the more of the substance they take the worse they become until they become destroyed completely. Every addiction is a convenient flight from a reality, a substitution of an uncomfortable truth with a convenient falsehood. Don't let religion become an opium. An opium makes your FEELING BRAIN take absolute control with no regards to your THINKING BRAIN. It makes what you feel the reality, and feelings are not always accurate. When you hear a rousing sermon from a man of God asking you to give all your January earnings as first fruit so that your year will be prosperous, it's your FEELING BRAIN that will be activated spontaneously and jump into the driving seat. There is no stats to establish that 'first fruiter have better financial success in the year than others. Moreover God is not babalawo that demands things before the client gets help. Therefore, THINK. If you suspend the robust use of your THINKING BRAIN, religion becomes your opium, it makes you FEEL VERY GOOD but not good, it makes you FEEL RICH but you ain't rich, it makes you FEEL like your destiny is in a ministry but it ain't, it makes you FEEL like you are so special that your case is different from everyone's but you ain't, it makes you run away from confronting the harsh realities of life frontally. The Supreme Court has sacked senator Lyon as governor of Bayelsa state and ordered the swearing in of Hope a. Some people are already blaming a certain priest while some are praising him depending on what camp they belong. That happens when you look at the issue from religious prism, which should'nt. If the judgement of the Supreme Court is wrong and you accept it because of a certain 'prophecy', religion has become your opium and you are stuck in a rot. If the judgement is true but you reject it claiming that it was because of a certain 'prophecy' you are also high on the opiate of religion. Analyze the case from its pure legal, political and electoral angles and be informed. The little I know is that having the highest number of votes doesn't necessarily win you an election, it takes more than that. I also know that the Nigerian judiciary is very funny, sometimes it panders to partisan politics as against jurisprudence. In Nigeria the judiciary falls victim of willing and unwilling manipulation by the political class. Now if Don't let your religion be your opium, think it through, God gave us brain and that's one thing that has stood human beings above other animals. Look at the electricity that your life depends on, it didn't come out from 21 days fasting and prayer, it didn't come from first fruits and tithe( as good as these are), it came from THINKING BRAIN. The car you drive, the phones you use, imagine your life now without phone, internet, car, fans etc, these things didn't come by 'prophecy', they came from THINKING BRAINS, God blessed us with them through people who used their THINKING BRAIN. Such people did not make their religion an opium, you too shouldn't. Let me come and be going Hello sir, this is a very wonderful piece. I will use it in my book... I am writing a book that will elevate the mind of Africans... this is my e-mail, ogbwandi@yahoo.com |

donstan18: Traditionally, a man is the chief sponsor of any wedding ceremony while the woman supports in a way she can. Reason, it's expected a man goes into marriage when financially stable and ready.
Allocating 50% to her passed a message that you'll be a type of husband who will be after the statistics of the wife's earning and spending. You sure wouldn't have done what you did if you hadn't any knowledge of her earning, you acted because you know her earning and that's a red flag for Nigerian ladies, because they don't like dragging and equal responsibilities in a home.
You don't go direct when you want a woman to contribute financially to something. You go Tactically[Not imposing, but asking how and where she can take care of, she'll choose, no matter the percentage of her choice, you lock up, keep the planning going, pretend like you are cool and then sketch out a personal plan of how to act worried and restless before her, she'll wanna know the problem, act like you wanna hide it from her, she'll be worried and pissed that you are hiding things from her, then you'll come up with a story and open up that you are facing financial crisis and don't know how to sort some things out concerning the wedding, she'll willingly help with pity without seeing you as a stingy or mean person]
No be everything dem dey form mancho, you go dey use your head.
You've spent on traditional wedding and for that not to be a total waste, kindly go and meet her, reason with her and go tactical, not directly with authority.
Happy married life in advance! You are good my guy. |

Self esteem is a big issue because it has to do with the mind. She obviously started thinking her friends with big butts were better than her. I am grateful she has a boyfriend that loves her and that's what matters. Inner beauty is d best. We should be mindful of people we surround ourselves with. The girls hangs out with people that have big butts. Why not make like mind friends that have no big buttocks? Influence of social media too is another problem. |

As I talk to you right now one I'd.iot somewhere who pushes wheelbarrow is thinking of marrying the second wife. Stories are very powerful, it can be used to demoralize, to built or to kill. Unfortunately the stories that have been handed down us suggests that blacks are inferior animals with no brain. It was concorted by white historians. Whether you like it or not this stories are affecting us negatively as we spend more time to look for self affirmation, trying to prove that we are equal with whites than being productive. The whites knew we will be in this fight. We need to rewrite our stories. |

FamousMonk: A great book indeed. But unfortunately,Nigerians will agree. But when you mention religion as a tool used by the colonialist to subdue our progress, they'd start yapping gibberish about you not understanding the things of the spirit. I strongly believe religion is on the agogee of the reasons we are still backward.. I ThankGod you mentioned "Religion,' not "Christianity." They are two different things. Churches are building universities and other businesses and with a perfect administrative structures better than that of Governments. Is that not development. In as much as I am concerned, Churches like Redeem, winners and Salvation Ministries are fast developing this country than most state govt. These churches give out billions of scholarships to students every year. |

Indeed, Walter book Rodney's boldness and brilliance in writing the book is something to reckon with. The revolutionary scholar left me in aha moment.
He said in the book that, imperialism, racism, economic sabotage, slavery, colonialism, divide and rule, indirect rule, etc, by the West killed Africa's development till today. "The decisiveness of the short period of Colonialism and its negative consequences for Africa spring mainly from the fact that Africa lost power. Power is the ultimate determinant in human society, being basic to the relations between any group and between groups. It implies the ability to defend one's interest and if necessary impose one's will by any means available. In relations between peoples, the question of power determines maneuverability in bargaining, the extent to which a people survive a physical and cultural entity. When one society finds itself forced to relinquish power entirely to another society, that in itself is a form of underdevelopment."
However, he maintained in his unbiased view points that "non of these remarks are intended to remove the ultimate responsibility for development from the shoulders of Africans. Not only are there African accomplices inside the imperialism system, but every African has a responsibility to understand the system and work for its overthrow."
WALTER RODNEY, the Guyanese scholar and activist, was tragically killed in the summary of 1980 amidst political turmoil in Guyana. Rodney was a graduate of the University of the West Indies , Jamaica and London university, where he received his ph.D in history. His other publication include, A History of Upper Guinea Coast 1545 to 1800 and Rodney was a leader in the Working Peoples Alliance.

Family › Plenty Evils:Reasons Why Older Generation Should Stop Blaming Younger Generation by SweetyMarvel00(op): 1:19am On Nov 17, 2018 |
''Children of Nowadays!''
When I hear that phrase, it grieves me because it is badly pressed. Not all children of nowadays are bad, Not all children of nowadays are disrespectful, Not all children of nowadays are husband/wife snatchers, Not all children of nowadays are lazy cowards.
It all boils down to upbringing and personal character of the child and most of these new age parents raising nuisance children are from older generation. So when you say, CHILDREN OF NOWADAYS, whose generation is deceiving who? it has always been like this, even the upcoming future generation will be tagged, children of nowadays.
Arguably, all the bad parents raising bad kids today are also from that older generation classified as "Children of Nowadays" in their own time. Character and habits of parents has a lot to do with children of nowadays syndrome, as long as the blood and the gene exist. So before you curse or accuse or threaten or condemn or cast a stone on the children of nowadays, reflect on yourself if you were not also classified as children of nowadays in your own time. Everything starts from the family, including the "Children of nowadays" and children are born into parents of older generation.
Not all children of olden days are pace setters today, Not all children of olden days are disciplined today, Not all children of olden days are respectful and good today.
Earnest Hermingway was one of the greatest writers of his day, but depression, alcoholism and suicide plagued him and his family members. Hermingway took his own life in 1961. his sister committed suicide five years later. His brother committed suicide sixteen years later. His grand daughter did the same thing 1996. It's interesting also that Hermingway's father took his life in 1928. I was wondering what would have happened back in 1920's if his father had deactivated the suicide gene. If he had taken authority over the negative spirit and instead activated the faith gene, the victory gene, the more than a conqueror gene. he could have changed the family line. he might have started generational blessing, instead of generation curse.
In 1874,a member of the New York prison board noticed there were six persons from the same family serving in one of the prisons. He was intrigued and did a study. he traced the family line back to a man by name, MAX JUKES, who was born in 1920. He was known as a trouble maker, a heavy drinker with no integrity. he married a woman just like him. They had six daughters and two sons. twelve hundred of their descendants were studied. Of those, 310 were homeless, 180 were alcoholics, 161 were drug addicts, 150 were criminals and 7 of them committed murder.
Another family that lived around that same time also was studied. the head of this family was Jonathan Edwards, who was born in 1903. He was a famous theologian and the president of Princeton University. He married his wife, Sara and was a devoted family man. they remained married for 31 years until his death. they had 11 children. fourteen hundred of their descendants were studied. Among them 13 were college presidents, 66 were professors, 100 were attorneys, 85 were authors of classic books, 32 were state judges, 66 were physicians and 80 were holders of public office holders, including 3 governors , 3 U. Senators and one vice president of the United States.
I believe that children of olden days are also contributing to what children of nowadays are turning into. Children of olden days make a lot of impact on the children of nowadays.
Therefore, in most cases, The disrespectful children of nowadays learnt from the children of olden days, The wayward children of nowadays learnt from the children of olden days etc.
The reality here is that no generation is totally bad, no generation is totally good. Therefore the logical thing to do is to stop generalizing. If we don't stop generalizing and then you walk up to me as an older generation and say, oh children of nowadays are this and that. perhaps, I may as well look into your eyes and tell you, children of olden days are this and that...
The older generation should stop acting "Thou art holy" and then tag the younger generation, "Thou art guilty." |
