Oh i suppose, in your neck of the woods, participants is synonymous with "ring leaders"?

There's no doubt, these two partake in the coup but it was quite mendacious of you to now call them ring leaders.

So achebe (a bloody civilian) and bifran apologist is whose views we should hold to high regard??

Ironsi n ojukwu were marked for death by the coup plotters

Also be informed nzeogwu wasn't the mastermind of the coup... ifejauna was, nzeogwu was the 'arrowhead' of the coup n 'face of the coup'

Whether Ironsi partook in the coup is irrelevant, he benefitted from it

And quickly sought to consolidate power by issuing the unitary decree b.s amongst others let's not forget ojukwu also benefited from the coup and kept his mouth shut.

Obj benefited from the botched coup that killed murtala... did he consolidate power?

Nope! If he was as stupid as Ironsi, he'd be dead by now too.

Pls read up other books not just achebe's, the yorubas never and I repeat NEVER killed igbos during the pogroms, infact more igbos were killed in benue, kaduna than the core north...cos yes "one nigeria" allowed igbos cross the niger & benue rivers to settle in the north.
Ironsi allegedly was penned down to be killed by the coupist but was botched just the same way as Brig. Maimalari was botched by Major Okafor and Cpt Oji but record shows that okafor went looking for him. There was no record of anyone going after ironsi only for the general to later conveniently foil (sic) the coup.

In fact, the Prime minister was shot dead and dump in the bush by ifeajunna and okafor after hearing that ironsi had just truncated the coup.

Brigadier Mai-Malari, alerted to the presence of Major Okafor's force in his compound by Captain Oji's burst of fire dropped the telephone and, followed by his wife, was observed running into the boy's quarters. From there he escaped into the road, and it is thought, tried to make his way to the Federal Guard Barracks.According to the ORs interrogated, Major Okafor flew into a rage when he discovered that the Brigadier had escaped and bitterly blamed the men of the Federal Guard for not shooting the Brigadier when they saw him running towards the boy's quarters. He then ordered all present that the Brigadier must be shot on sight.

Major Okafor then jumped into the landrover driven by L/Cpl Noji. He informed 2/Lt Igweze that he was going to get "that man" and to arrange for more troops to come to the Brigadier's House. He drove around the area for some time but failed to find the Brigadier. By the time he returned to 11 Thompson Avenue, Major Ademoyega and Captain Adeleke had arrived there in a landrover driven by L/Cpl D. Omeru. Major Ademoyega had already informed Captain Oji that the Brigadier had been killed and that he had seen his body at the Federal Guard. Captain Oji was overheard telling Okafor that "the Jack had been killed". It is presumed that by "the Jack" Oji meant the Brigadier. Major Okafor then informed the troops with him that Brigadier Mai-Malari had been killed by men from another unit.

The time, by then, was nearly 0400 hrs. captain Oji was ordered by Major Okafor to proceed to 2nd Battalion in Ikeja to check the situation
there. The Captain left in landrover NA 773 accompanied by Sgt. H. Irundu, L/Cpl H Okeke, Pte. S. Adekunle and Pte. I Onoja.

As stated elsewhere in this report, Major Ifeajuna and his convoy, after the abduction of the PM and the Finance Minister, drove towards the Federal Guards Officers mess where he made a brief stop and then proceeded toward Ikoyi Hotel, still with the PM in the car. At a point in the Golf course, adjacent to a petrol station Brigadier Mai-Malari was walking towards Dodan Barracks when he saw Major Ifeajuna's car. The Brigadier recognized his Brigade Major Ifeajuna and shouted and beckoned him to stop. Then Ifeajuna stopped the car and accompanied by 2/Lt Ezedigbo went towards Brig. Mai-Malari and killed him.

The Northerners saw the January 15 Coup as an 'Igbo Coup' but in reality Nzeogwu the ring leader of those that carried out the Coup was just an Igbo in paper. Spoke Hausa fluently, dressed like an Hausa when he was not on Uniform had lot of Hausa friends.

To understand the Nigeria 'story' better, read 'There Was A Country' by Chinua Achebe
Ol' boy, can you please stop regurgitating this asinine propaganda, Nzeogwu was never the ring leader though he headed the coup plot in the north as he was based in the region. He was actually recruited by Major C. I. Anuforo, 2months into the plot.

Of course, Nzeogwu was just ibo on paper only however when the biafran war commenced he fought with side by side with his fellow ibo people.

Lastly, don't insult our collective intelligence by referring to that pile of junk penned by a senile, bitter, biafran minister of misinformation as the the true history of nigeria.

Haba! don't you inherently mischievous folks ever get tired of telling tall tales? None of the names you mentioned above were part of the ring leaders of the Jan. 15th 1966 coup. The actual ringleaders were Major Okafor, Major Ifeajuna and Captain Oji who began hatching their dastardly plot in August 1965. In actual FACT, Major Ademoyega was the last to be recruited by the group in late October by Major Nzeogwu. The other two didn't get to know about the coup until the night of the 14th, January 1966 at the meeting held in ifeajunna's residence in Apapa.

pchukwudi:
You are missing the point. Do yourself some good and study the origin of the whole fiasco.

1. IPOB issued a release a couple of days ago reminding SOME Yorubas (who shamelessly supported the proposed secret trial of Nnamdi Kanu) that Awolowo - despite being accused of a more serious crime - was PUBLICLY tried and convicted - but was later released by Ojukwu.

2. IPOB reminded the same Kanu haters of Yoruba extraction that it was Ojukwu (a man from Kanu's stock) that released Awolowo from prison after being convicted for treason. IPOB wanted to know why certain Yoruba elements feel that open trial was okay for Awolowo but not okay for Nnamdi Kanu.

3. Rather than doing some serious soul searching, the next thing that happened on Nairaland was the upsurge of silly threads distorting historic facts, calling IPOB liars and denying that Ojukwu was the one who released Awolowo from jail.

4. So this thread is a raw dose of truth (from Ojukwu himself) to hopefully difuse the lies of some senseless haters and propangandists who use Nairaland to distort history and peddle falsehood.

Got it now?

And NO I am not a member of IPOB. But I thoroghly hate dishonesty, injustice and hypocricy.
Geez! You guys are just unbelievable!

So your "truth" is basically predicated on what IPOB and Ojukwu said! In essence, IPOB -a biafran militant group's statement issued

recently, is enough collaboration to Ojukwu's (-an ex biafran warlord) interview, 15 yrs ago!! shocked

Do you have any thing else that can stand on weight scale as the official proof, below?

The Gazette

Government Notice No. 1207/1966 ordering the release of Awo on August 2, 1966
.

The fact that Ojukwu would come out to lie about this many years later even though the historicity (kindly check the meaning of this word) of his claim is unfounded,( There are contemporaneous newspaper reports ,a gazette and contemporaneous books etc that report who released Awo) telll us what kind of man he was; a shameless inveterate liar who lied not only about this but about everything. He lied about weapons he never had and when he eventually saw that the war was lost he lied he was going to bring weapons and ran away.

We know that was not the first time he ran.

When "Kasala burst" as they say in Warri,he ran away from Government House to hide in Onitsha and then in a police station.
Disgraceful!!
Oh course, ojukwu was a bare-faced liar! I saw a video years ago (which i presume, is still on Youtube) where the same shameless liar repeated the falsehood his people have been regurgitating like a leaking water tap on how Zik and his NCNC party won the 1953 regional election in western nigeria but due to Awo's (and yorubas' tribalistic tendencies) led to carpet-crossing by some yoruba candidates and subsequently culminated in AG wining the said election.

But somehow, neither ojukwu nor his fellow inherently-mischievous people could produce any verifiable evidence to buttress their claim, i.e the official election results sheet which clearly states otherwise. In spite of their inability to present any evidence whatsoever, they still maintain (up till date) that NCNC did win (the election) but lost eventually due to carpet-crossing.

While I doubt the date ascribed to this broadcast, lets assume for a second that it is true. Even if Gowon assumed power on the first of August, he still could not have released Awolowo. Outside Lagos, Gowon had little or no power. Gowon could not have released Awolowo who was in jail in the Eastern Region. Not even Ojukwu recognised him as head of state and Ojukwu was technically senior to Gowon. In the chaotic times that followed the overthrow of Ironsi, Gowon was pretty much a lame Duck president who could not do anything and no power over Military Governors like Lt Colonel Ejoor and Ojukwu
The mere fact that Awo was jailed for federal felon in calabar prison, part of nigeria as at the time, the case was adjudicated. Ojukwu as a regional administrator was still under the payment of the national govt (including the prison governor in calabar).

Logic demands that Awo would have been re-arrested the moment he stepped foot in yorubaland and sent back to prison unless of course, he Awo, had already been pardoned by the national govt which gowon then represents.

many of them in yorubaland had enough time to cash their "millions" which they subsequently invested in ojukwu's BOB .

Awolowo was released by Ojukwu to prepare his people for the eventual break up of Nigeria

He rather ran to the people that put him in jail in the first place like a demented looking for succor and sold out his liberator because he was made the Promise of being President of Nigeria. He never became that because the same people who threw him in Jail for treason the first time wanted to throw him in prison again.

[/b]THIS LED TO AWOLOWO KILLING HIMSELF WITH CHILLED, MADE-IN-ABA, KILL-AND-DRY, EXPIRED RAT POISON [/b]
But the "people" that jailed Awo (on a trumped-up charge) were actually members of the NPC/NCNC coalition govt in the 1st republic..

Facts :: Awolowo resigned from Gowon's government in 1971 and gave him notice in 1970 . He was not involved in the Indigenization decree facts are stubborn

Simple question : If Biafra had won the war were the Igbos planning to come back to claim their WEALTH from Nigerian banks? How many Banks were in Nigeria in those days people like to lie to deceive themselves but facts are very stubborn, The reality is most people did not use banks and the of few that did most withdrew their savings because BIAFRA was a ONE WAY JOURNEY . There were two main banks Standard Bank( Now first bank) and Barclays( Now Union Bank) between them they did not have 20 branches in the entire country. He (Ojukwu) stood firm when others ran, compromised and did back room deals with their oppressors. He was a great and a proud warrior.

"Dim Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was not an ordinary person or one of the run of the mill leaders that we often eulogise after death in Nigeria. He was much more than that.... The father of Biafra. A man of strength, vision and courage. What an extraordinary and noble heritage. We knew your father and your father’s father. They also made their mark. They were also great and powerful men. Yet you were the star that eclipsed all stars in the Nigerian firmament. Unlike many of those who have hail you only in death, you were man enough to stand up and say ”no more” and ”never again” when your people were faced with genocide and mass murder. During the civil war the Biafrans fought like great men and lions simply because they were led by a great man and a great lion. We shall continue the fight for liberation where you stopped. The battle has passed to the next generation."
