PhonesGoogle Play Protect: Secures Your Android Device And Data Against Malware by temitofa(op): 8:55am On Aug 10, 2017
Google Play Protect which is Google's solution for your device protection, it has been ringing in our ears since this year's I/O. Some beta testers have even seen it earlier. The rolling out of the new features currently appears to be very slow to all users.

What Does Play Protect Means?
It's basically an anti-malware tool, which monitors app behavior and deals with them if they make any funny move. For more understanding, the Play Store has had several levels of scan for a while now. However, Play Protect takes it to another level.

The new service does not work like a ghost scanner that checks apps that are live on the Play Store. The moment Play Protect gets to your phone, you can actually see its icon and pull your reports from it.

Play Protect will be in the Play Store app and will periodically scan apps on your device and also compare results with functionality of the same apps on other devices. If it discovers something abnormal, you will get an alert, warning and prompting you to delete the offending app. It can also be triggered to scan on demand from the Play Protect tab in the Play Store slide-over menu.

This is actually a good move by Google, considering the influx of actual malware that get inside the Play Store and on to users' smartphones, it was because it was cleverly disguised in innocent, working apps.

Play Protect will also scan 50 million apps in the Play Store per day and mark the "verified safe" ones with its green badge, so you can download with confidence. The new security tool will also become an invisible part of Google's mobile Chrome browser — it will monitor the websites you visit for suspicious activity and raise a red flag when it suspects something wrong going on.

Additionally, the “find my device” feature from the Android Manager seems to be moving to be a part of the Play Protect branding. However, we don't see anything new about its functions at this stage.

PhonesSamsung Leader 8: A Flip Smartphone With Spectacular Specs by temitofa(op): 11:59am On Aug 08, 2017
Samsung recently announced a new smartphone dubbed the Samsung Leader 8, which comes with some pretty nice specifications. Though, you would be stunned to discover that the device is a flip phone. Nonetheless, this flip phone is almost as capable as any other flagship phone on the market.

The Samsung Leader 8 is powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor, which you would recognize as the same processor on the Galaxy S7.

Talking about the memory and native storage, the smartphone boasts of 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The device also features a 2,300mAh battery which keeps the light on. Well, that sounds a bit awkward to me, somehow too small but it will keep you through the day, largely owing to the much smaller display, which sits in at 4.2 inches.

The Samsung Leader 8 also has a 12MP camera with an f/1.7 aperture. Furthermore, there’s a fingerprint sensor just below the camera.

However, the phone has more than just specs; it also supports Samsung services you would find on other devices, like Samsung Pay and wireless charging.

This is surely an interesting concept. But Samsung failed to talk about the price or availability. The only available information about the Samsung Leader 8 is that it will be available in China. It also appears that after the official launch, it may only be available in parts of Asia.

In fact, this is not the first time in recent years that companies returned to the idea of a flip phone. Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Folder 2, which had mid-range specs rather than the flagship specs on the Leader 8. Also, in June LG launched the LG Exalt LTE.

It positively great to see that the idea of the flip phone is not totally dead, despite the fact that most of the world has moved on from it.

Google has just announced the inclusion of a latest features - a new messaging funtionality that allows users to chat and share videos within the app. The new feature will be available effective August 7, for all YouTube users on mobile devices.

All the videos shared by users will be grouped in a new tab on the YouTube mobile app, which will make it easier for users to see what videos their friends have shared recently. Users can even create a conversation group and share their favorite videos.

Remember that the new messaging feature is only available on mobile devices. It can be accessible via YouTube's share button and choosing your phone's contacts list. Another way to use the new feature is by sharing a direct link and adding new friends to chat about the video.

PhonesYoutube Introduces Speed Controls For Video Playback On Some Android Devices by temitofa(op): 4:51am On Aug 08, 2017
One good thing about YouTube's desktop version is the pack of the special features attached to it. One of those special functionality we are talking about is speed controls: ability to speed up or slow down a video is especially useful for educational videos, or just looking for those tiny details that are not easily noticeable.

Now, YouTube appears to have added speed controls to its mobile application. According to a report from 9to5Google, there is an option to select video speed on YouTube for Android, version 12.29.57, but the option is yet to be available for every user out there. As at the time of reporting, we are yet to have access to such.

The speed options available on mobile seem to be the same as on desktop: 0.75x, 0.5x, or 0.25x the normal speed, or faster at 1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x. In order to bring up those controls, users will need to tap on the dots menu in the upper right corner.

Google has not release any official statement based on this new development, however, the feature seems to be real.

Meanwhile, you can give it a try, do you see the new speed controls.

PhonesGoogle Allegedly Wanted To Acquire Snapchat For $30 Billion by temitofa(op): 8:42am On Aug 04, 2017
Snapchat, which is officially called Snap Inc., filed for IPO early this year March has went public and would now has the capital of the public to offer financial support. But, a report from Business Insider reveals that Google had had an oral discussion on the acquisition of Snapchat with Snap Inc.CEO Evan Spiegel.

The offer was around $30 billion and the negotiations transpired far earlier before the company filed for IPO: early 2016. Google’s offer was allegedly still on the table even after Snap Inc. went public. Of course, Spiegel was not move, he never wanted to trade off the company. Actually, only he and Snap Inc. co-founder Bobby Murphy makes major decisions for the company so public supporters don't have any say about it, even if they desired to.

Although Snap told Business Insider that “these rumors are false,” and Google failed to comment, the news jerked Snap Inc.’s stock price up by 2.3% today after weeks of steady drop.

Google would be a great parent company for Snapchat in the marketing world if it’s real. Also, Snapchat’s curated and sponsored content sections could get a lot of improvement. Anyway it goes, Snap CEO Spiegel would not want to let go the app just like that, principally since Snapchat is his baby.

Yet, Google’s relationship with Snapchat remains close. In actual fact, Google’s investment arm put money on Snapchat after it went public, and Snap - one of Google Cloud’s largest customers has vowed to invest $2 billion on Google Cloud - platform that Snapchat runs on.

Imagine how interesting a combination of technologies between Snapchat’s spectacles and Google Glass. Snap’s AR technology would absolutely be a great plus to Google’s development of Glass.

PhonesChinese Spyware (adups Software) Sends Private Information To China by temitofa(op): 10:20am On Aug 03, 2017
Ever heard of the Blu R1 HD? It's one of the top selling phone on Amazon, which costs just $60. But, last year November, researchers found out something about the phone that raised more than a few eyebrows.

The phone was caught sending private data to China. The company behind the spying software, Shanghai Adups Technology, describe the occurence as a mistake.

However, it has been discovered that the software provider is still working on other phones and doing the same job but the software has become more secretive about its activities.

At the recently held Black Hat security conference, researchers from Kryptowire, a security firm, revealed that Adups’ software is still sending devices’ data to a company server in China without alerting people. Kryptowire said it has observed Adups sending data without telling users on at least three different smartphones. However, an Adups spokesperson said that the company had resolved the issues way back in 2016, and that the issues do not exist anymore.

It is worth mentioning that Adups’ secret data funneling to China was discovered mostly because the Blu R1 HD was the top-selling phone on Amazon. The issue still persists on other low-profile devices, according to Kryptowire. For instance, the Blu Grand M, which goes for between $60 and $75, still had this problem six months after Adups admitted their mistake.

The researcher discovered that the phone was sending data to China containing a list of installed apps, used apps, unique phone identifiers like the MAC address and IMEI, and also the phone number and cell phone tower ID. Now, some of the more aggressive spying would send a person’s browsing history and bookmarks.

This spyware has not been found on devices that cost more than $300, as Adups is mostly installed on cheaper devices. Also, it is not restricted to Blu devices. In fact, it seems pretty widespread on lower-end smartphones. It is still unclear what happens with the data once it gets to the servers in china, though.

PhonesVin Diesel Stunt: Over Half A Million Iphones Stolen From A Moving Truck by temitofa(op): 4:04pm On Jul 31, 2017
Dutch police have detained five men alleged to have stolen iPhones worth more than half a million US dollars, but then it's not just the total amount of iPhones stolen. The men purportedly applied a Fast and Furious stunt to make it happen.

A modified van was driven close to the truck loaded with the iPhones, one of the suspects broke into the truck while on motion and started throwing boxes filled with iPhones into the van.

The five suspects who are all natives of the Eastern European country of Romania, have been arrested at a holiday park in central Netherlands on Saturday. Mr. Kraszewski who is with local police said:

"The truck was taking its freight from A to B and did not stop. Even so, [the phones] were gone. So it must have happened that way. And now we finally have the evidence, with the van and the loot.”

Similar raids have been reported in Europe before, but this is the first time that an actual arrest based on such type of robbery would be recorded.

PhonesHow To Enable A Bottom Navigation Bar In Google Chrome On Android by temitofa(op): 3:32pm On Jul 31, 2017
Smartphones have not stopped its tremendous growth since its conception and the growth as well has never stopped the human hands from enjoying the inevitable punishment of pressing/touching.
Luckily, whenever hardware obstructs user-friendliness, software quickly comes in to provide users with ways of making things stress-free.
How to enable a bottom navigation bar in Google Chrome on Android

One of the most popular browsers in the world now, Google's own Chrome, has a flock of features that aim to make user’s experience better and easier, and one of these is the new bottom-positioned navigation bar (on Android).

Below are the steps involved in enabling a bottom navigation bar in Google Chrome on Android.

Step 1. The picture below is the standard look of the Google Chrome on Android - a layout with a top-positioned nav bar. This is what we are going to work on.

Step 2. Tap your address bar and type in chrome://flags. This will open up Chrome's top-secret hidden menu that can possibly do a lot of things. Ensure you don't touch any setting you're not conversant with.

Step 3. Now, tap the three-dot menu in the upper left corner of the browser and go to "Find in page". Then search for "Chrome Home".

Step 4.
Ensure you enable this feature, then relaunch the Chrome browser in order to allow the changes to take place.

Step 5. Hmm! That appears to be very easy and more convenient. Isn’t it? To be candid, not everybody will be fond of that change, but it's a skilfully hidden option that can potentially make your browsing experience more loving and nice.

PhonesHuawei Will No Longer Make Low-end Smartphones by temitofa(op): 11:57am On Jul 31, 2017
Huawei, the world’s 3rd largest smartphone maker has announced that it will no longer produce low-end smartphone in order to improve sales and profits. This is gradually confirming the extinction of low-end Huawei smartphones.

Huawei claims the reason for taking this decision is because the margin is extremely low and that they will move forward with the production of only mid-range and upper-range smartphones henceforth. Huawei says:

“We are giving up the very low-end devices because the margin in this is extremely low, and it’s not making enough profit for us”

Way back in 2014, Huawei reported a cut in production of low-end devices. And now, the brand has complete drop the production.

Huawei is not the first smartphone manufacturer to announce an desertion of the low-end market. The attraction of becoming the Android equivalent of Apple is solid. HTC and Sony have endeavoured to follow through on that path, but with slight success. BlackBerry also abandoned budget smartphones in 2013, but that move almost killed the brand too. These trademarks are still struggling till now.

However, Huawei case might be different since they are the world’s 3rd biggest smartphone maker after all. That could be an edge for them. All the other brands that have bid to ditch the low-end have been businesses experiencing financial struggles. Nonetheless business of making Android smartphones have not been very lucrative (only Apple makes over 90% of the smartphone industry’s profits), Huawei is not precisely in the league of struggling phone makers though, so possibly they can pull this off.

If they do pull off the plug, maybe one day, they will drop the production of mid-range too and concentrate only on making high-end devices. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, there are many options available in the low-end smartphone market so don’t feel hurt, it’s a jam-packed habitation, with all manner of Android phone makers in town.

Google has just confirmed that two of its most popular streaming services will be merged to provide a single, more advanced experience. While this isn't the first time that we hear about a possible merger between Google Play Music and YouTube Red, it's the first time that an official confirmed the information.

According to Cohen, Google thinks combining YouTube Red and Google Play Music services of utmost importance, and offers consumers with one offering. For now, Google is in the process of assessing how these two services can be merged to provide customers with a better experience than ever before.

“Music is very important to Google and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners and artists. Nothing will change for users today and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”

It remains to be seen when the merger will happen, but one thing is clear: it will not affect customers who use either of the two services.

PhonesLatest Iphone 8 Leaked Renders Reported To Be Finalized Design by temitofa(op): 8:13pm On Jul 24, 2017
Guess you will need to start saving for iPhone 8 , even if you are yet to know the exact launch date. iPhone 8 is said to be Apple's most expensive smartphone ever.

A recent leak has yet again confirmed that the smartphone would shake your pocket a bit, even saying that the starting price will be between the $1,100 and $1,200. Now what could make one dish out such amount also comes with the handset, the entry-level model may come with 128GB of storage while there is an option 256GB version, more cash to get that.

Apart from the cash involved, this leak gives us a new set of renders of the iPhone 8. And these reportedly showcase the finalized hardware design for the device. They're based on information from sources within Apple's supply chain, turned into pictures by a case maker.

It sports a 5.8-inch OLED screen with bezels around 4mm on all sides, which makes the iPhone 8 less prone to accidental input from the palm in which it's held than Samsung's latest flagships.

According to the render of the bottom edge, 3.5mm headset jack has been confirmed absent from the smartphone, while the Lightning port lives on (may be for now). However, the iPhone 8's charging cable may have USB-C at the other end. This could bring along fast charging for the first time in an Apple phone. The fast charging feature may be necessary due to the alleged battery improvement, compared to the iPhone 7 Plus, despite the physical small sizs of iPhone 8.

PhonesGlance Plus Works Like The Always On Feature To Smartphones by temitofa(op): 2:21pm On Jul 24, 2017
You wish to have the “Always On” feature on the two recent Samsung flagships, Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8 or even LG G5 but no way for now because of your budget or you just don’t want them.
Glance Plus works like the Always On feature to smartphones

Always On is a feature that lets your device to display information about the current time, date, battery level, weather and notifications without unlocking the screen.

This feature is mainly useful for people who cannot help but keep turning on their display constantly, maybe looking for new notifications, which seriously drain their battery. But, not everybody that does this has the Always On feature on their smartphone. However if your smartphone has an AMOLED display you can get this feature on your phone through an app called Glance Plus.

Here’s how the app works. Glance Plus takes advantage of your phone’s proximity sensor to allow you check the time, weather forecast, notifications and various useful information, all without unlocking your screen. this means it is a mix of Always On and Ambient Display. Once you install in the app, you get to customize every detail of the app, from the font of the display to the position of the information you want displayed, to the size and color of the displayed text.Glance Plus

You have the option to make full use of the Always On function on Glance Plus only when your device is charging. After charging, you can view the date, time and notifications by swiping your hand over the proximity sensor. You can also choose to enable the feature anytime you pull out the phone from your pulse or pocket through the Settings menu or as soon as the display is turned off.

If you possess a device with an AMOLED screen it’s advisable to set the position of the displayed information to Random. This is to avert a burn-in effect, which is a permanent “ghost image” caused by displaying static content for too long.

Glance Plus is a good substitute to Always On for folks who want to see information without unlocking their phones. Unfortunately, though, this app does not completely replace the feature, but the app is reasonable, and will improve with upcoming updates.

LinkedIn is targeting the emerging markets with less powerful smartphones and with challenging or slower data connections, beginning with India.

LinkedIn Lite was originally developed as a mobile site for India late 2016, so this isn't the first time that some people will be seeing the concept.

This 1MB app (actually it's 2MB when installed on Galaxy S8+ and some other devices, however close enough) makes LinkedIn 80% easier to load, and it'll load a page within five seconds, even on an obsolete 2G network. Almost everything from the regular 27MB app is intact; the news feed, profile, networks, messaging, and notifications are still accessible here, except the most data-consuming features.

The app is presently only available in India, however it'll be made available in 60+ other developing markets soon.

Another thing is that LinkedIn has no plans to make the lite version available on iOS platform, given that 97% Android marketshare in India. If you wish to give it a try, download the LinkedIn Lite APK from APK Mirror.
