Put your ac on. Hehehe... Just start using AC with the ringing.

Just for the record bros, i hardly drive without putting on the AC.

Guess what? The AC even feel better now compared to when the engine was in its previous status that feels as if the car is pulling another car.

u can even put on the AC and use Gear "2" climb high bump easily without stress grin

Manual drivers, are u feeling me? grin

Car Talk / My Experience "Ringing" An Engine by temmym4(m): 1:30pm On Oct 04, 2018
I have decided to share this with everyone just to help someone out there who might be in the shoe i was once in.

As a lover of Manual Tranny, i missed and wanted to keep one at home to drive so i eventually got a fairly used Nissan Primera p11 (1998) quite clean and ok, but one issue, Revving the engine brings out smoke from the exhaust, not a serious smoke actually but if u are the type that know your onions, it is clearly an indication that Valves and/or Rings and starting to worn out and allowing oil into them little by little.

*Please note that i knew about this before i agree with the deal and the price the vehicle was given out was ok for me to replace the engine if i wish to.

I guess this happened due to the Negligence of the former owner and the type of engine oil he uses.

The thing is, u cant find out yourself except if someone rev the vehicle for you while u watch from the rear.

Some other days, the vehicle brings out smokes for few seconds after parking overnight.

Apart from the smoking part, i took time to check underneath the engine bottom plate or oil pan (not a mechanic so i actually don't know what that is called) and found oil at the bottom, which actually indicates there is a leak. And d way thing look dow there, i can see that the pan hit a hard stuff and i guess there is a little crack

Now there are 3 things involved,
1. My engine oil is leaking from the bottom due to a crack oil pan
2. It sometimes brings out blue smoke after parking a long time, for instance, overnight.. then stops, i.e valve seals are bad.
3. Revving a bit higher brings out blue smokes too, visible only to people behind u.. i.e my Piston rings are beginning to go bad already.

Although the car moves well and the engine still very active, i know i v got to get solution to those stuffs before it kills the engine and probably smoking all day on with no compression later on.

Did i tell u i had to top 1L of oil every 2 weeks since it's shortening and after a long journey?

I decided to visit a trusted mechanic and i explained things to him.

On the issue of engine, i had an option of either buying another one which costs about 130k or rebuild my existing one with new valve seals and rings which costs around 30k.

I have heard a lot of sad stories concerning ringing so i opted that one out. Some even said it doesn't last more than 6 months.
He smiled and explained some things to me.

"A successful Ringing involves an experience mechanic and also using genuine parts, " and that "some of the engines which is even sold to people as tokunbo are the refurbished ones, worked on with new rings by us here and resold as tokunbo"

I wasn't really convinced at first but after some months i made a calculation..

*A new Tokunbo engine costs around 130k (I wasn't ready to spend that on something am not even sure of the quality)

*My mechanic will rebuild my old engine for 30k

*I buy 1Litre oil for top-up every 2weeks at 2k, thats 4k for a month, apart from the regular service i do every 2 months with an oil of 4k.

So for a total of 6 months, l will use about 10Litres (10 cans of 1L) topping oil and 8Litres (2 cans of 4L) for regular servicing which makes a total of N28,000 just for the oil aside workmanship.

Now, why not put this money together and try out the engine ringing, use it for the same 6months. It's iron cast built engine anyway so it shouldn't be very hard for a successful rebuilding afterall, according to what i got online.

Besides, the money is not even up to what some people will give to a lady or buy drinks at a go. Even some people spend more than that to service their cars just one month.

Job started, oil pan was replaced.. New rings and valve seals done. The whole job took 3 days.

Before i went to pick it up, i read about what and what not to do after ringing an engine so i got that covered

Throughout my journey home, i wasn't convenient driving the car as i was busy listening to any sign of somethin breaking in the engine . grin.. Infact i go drive small and open the bonnet to check if water has mixed with the engine oil, or maybe coolant is now inside the gear oil grin

There was even a point where i could smell oil burning when the engine was warm after driving some minutes, i pulled over to see if oil has splashed all over the road grin

I have never paid attention to all my dashboard gauges like that single moment of driving away from mechanic workshop after the ring was done.

After that day, i began a countdown when that 6 months will come. More like someone who is waiting for a death sentence. Damn, some people can give u fear and discouragement ehn grin

To cut the long story short. 6 months has come and gone, car is used everyday and travels long journeys too, smoke no gree come o, instead na water vapor dey come out of it's exhaust every morning.. Especially steaming during cold mornings grin

Not a single drop of oil again either underneath or on oil stick.

The only thing i do now is change the oil and filter every 3 months or 3000KM whichever comes first. Nothin more.

Imagine still letting myself suffer till now and wasting money just because some Kazeems did a bad job for someone else, either an inexperienced one or he purposely bought knock off piston rings.

Also the first 1000KM after ringing matters too. I had to follow instructions online on how to break-in vehicle with new rings properly, i don't just depend on my mechanic advice only.

And yes, a "Kazeem" did the job for me,

My advice.

*Never let anyone push you, listen to advises, make use of the one that favours you, don't just just follow others' footsteps.

*Not everyone has got a lost of cash in the bank and can afford to buy a Tokunbo engine.

*Just because Mr A's job wasn't done successfully doesn't quite mean yours will follow the same pattern

*Don't be too stingy with your mechanic, you will be at the receiving end since they ll keep cheating you and buying you knock off parts, don't act too wise. Especially when rebuilding engine

*Get a competent mechanic with a fear of God who ll tell you the truth, it will help you and your car a lot

*I think Iron cast built engines are better rebuilt compared to the Aluminium ones. Infact i wont advice anyone with aluminium engine to rebuild, my own opinion.

*Personally, i feel getting competent mechanics that specializes on commercial vehicle will do a better job rebuilding an engine. My own opinion and from experience though.

My own story though. I hope it helps someone out there.
Please share your experience too if you ever had an engine rebuilt, maybe someone out there can learn from the perfection and mistakes as well.

***UPDATE**
It's almost 2 years already. Car doesnt smoke, everything is still in perfect condition.
Just servicing as at when due will keep your vehicle healthy and it will serve you for long.

Olumyyde:

Noted bro, at this point of my life, I see doing things to 'feel among' like u put it as childish n being unrealistic. Of course I know my capacity (my basic 110/month n d side hustle I do). It is in d quest of doing things within my capacity I'm asking for better options(if there are). There's a need that's why. Outgrown the stage of trying to impress humans. Tnx.

My brother, you have tried.
We all have our different mentalities.
Some people believe what you earn is not enough to own a car. As if everyone out there who drives one are millionaires.

I know of a family who goes around boarding a bike with 3 kids, the husband earns close to 100k. Ask him why he wouldn't get a small car so he can transport his family instead, he will tell u cars are expensive to maintain and he can't afford such expense.

Some, their problem is.... trying to feel among or Biting more than they can chew.

A man who Probably earns 40k, gets a car loan from his work place, wants to acquire and maintain a VENZA.

A man who's income is unstable decides to go for a Lexus RX330 that swallows fuel like say tomorrow no go come.

A man with a low income who has got so many mouth to feed, goes ahead to buy a car that one of its tyres costs 80k..

Someone who doesn't know anything about cars, someone who couldn't make a proper research or someone with greediness decided to get a shiny box of wahala just because it was so cheap

Those are the kinds of people that complains about cars mostly. They will make you believe having a car is the worst nightmare that can ever happen to human or tell you it's a liability.

If every man can follow their own path and stop doing stuffs to impress others, life will have been a better place.
You will see people who's class and income and family setting only permits them to own a Golf 2 or Nissan Micra, they ll go ahead and buy a Camry just like everyone else around them and at the end, they keep complaining bitterly. You ll begin to wonder in your own mind, na so e dey difficult to maintain vehicle ni. The answer is No.

Negligence on the other hand is killing some people, for instance you know your radiator hose leaks, it will only cost u few bucks to change the pipe or seal it, but u looked the other way and kept topping water till the thing got worse and go empty, you probably ended up with a bursted radiator or maybe gasket got damaged, car breaks down and money to repair is on the high side. You begin to curse the vehicle, tell me whose fault?

Some people know a particular model of vehicle has a common issue, still go ahead to get one.

It is very easy to maintain a vehicle only if you go with what you can handle and not be like someone else. After all, a golf 2 and a Range Rover Sport will move on the same road, they buy fuel at the same station and will get to their specific destination even if the SUV will get there first. Rain no go beat any of them.

My car brake pad cost 2k, yours costs 50k, it doesn't guarantee a safe trip.

My engine is 1.4 with 90HP, yours is v10 with 1000 horsepower, i know you wont fly. Even me never finish my speedometer self

The day you know how important a Volkswagen beetle owner is will be when good rain falls and you are busy walking along the road especially when you have a family.

Be yourself bro. Get a sound vehicle that you can handle preferably a basic ride to start with. You will never regret it.

For those who wants to belong, A car is a liability! For those who actually know it's worth, it is a Necessity!!

Car acquisition can either be an asset or a liability.... depending on its dividend.
If that car yield side income for u by using it as uber/taxi etc, (like i suspect its doing for temmy as underlined above) then its an asset, but if it doent bring anything to d table but to drain ur finances (and taking ur take home pay plus ur wife's) into consideration, its a liability.

@ the bolded. Nope bro, it isn't for Uber/Taxi grin

By using the word Passenger in the sentence previously, i meant those who are in the car with me sometimes, might be a friend or a colleague.

How is it easier to maintain an Auto Tranny compared to a manual?

How is there more wears and tears in a manual transmission compared to Auto? cheesy

Frequent Change of Gears in manual transmission, do they tell you and Auto tranny is stucked in a single gear and doesnt shift all through the journey? grin

Your Auto tranny Engine lasting longer compared to a manual tranny is based on what theory?

Even the fact that you are directing us to another thingy with the title "V4 and V6" shows how full of sh*t that write-up ll be.

For the very first time after about a year of constant AC usage on my Primera P11, the AC acted funny.
I was leaving my place of work around 4pm, i switched on the AC as usual, taking my leg off the gas i found out the car went off on motion, i found out putting off the AC, the car was normal, this went on for some minutes and i parked, then switch the AC on again and i allowed the car to run idle before taking off

Everythin went on normally and it chilled as usual until i got home, put off the vehicle. I decided to test the AC again and this time around, unusual sound of the AC belt came on and it was so bad that i had to turn it off.

Same thing happened thee next morning, this time around the belt cut off just 3 seconds on switching on. I parked, the call an AC technician, the only thing he said on phone was, the Compressor siezed up and it was completely damaged and i should buy another compressor. Just like that shocked

I just closed my bonnet like that and took my mind of AC . This happened last month, but the truth is, it hasn't been easy constantly using the thingy and now not been able to use it anymore sad

My question is, could it be repaired or will i have to change the whole compressor completely?

Update:

The car is still parked somewhere in agege.

Trying to revive it since wednesday last week has proved abortive.

A total of 30k has been spent so far.

Now, theres consideration of removing the whole engine because of a leak not far from under the radiator.

It was said that it is the water pump. Now it doesnt look like the water pump any longer.

embarassed

Bros, can't you see this thingy is not just giving you troubles but draining you financially, coupled with embarrassment and sleepless night.

calculate how much you have spent since it started embarrassing you.

Now, don't you think owning a Golf 2 that gives you peace of mind is better than owning sick Ferrari that sucks you dry and doesn't even move 3KM without dying.

What is the point of owning a car that you cant move from point A to B without you blowing its nose?

Imagine this ......owning a car that you can't drive fast so exhaust wont fall off, you can't drive slow as well so it wont die on you cos at the end of the day if it does, the car go need to rest 3 days at the spot. At the end of the day you still climb bike or enter bus.

You go don become food for your Kazeem, rewire and panel self.

My brotherly advice. Scrap that Motor before it scraps you.

Stop wasting money, Go and buy peace of mind even if it s small. And if u cant, use public transport till you can afford what u want.
It is not worth it.

Bro, u owe no one an explanation why you need a car. You dont need to earn a million before you own one as well. Never let anybody discourage or give you fear.

I was using a car when my income isn't up to 30k and it was properly maintained. The secret is.. Don't bite more than you can chew. Don't get a car you might not be able to maintain. (Transmission, Body and parts maintanance, Tyre change etc)

Tnx for your apt response, I really appreciate it. I intend going for the 2002 Honda civic auto tranny. a fairly used one I pray I'd get a good one. Wats your take on this pls?

To be sincere with you, i don't have anyone around me who uses that specific model. Just the '92 Manual and 2006 Auto.

I believe every car is as good as it's owner's periodic maintenance. Just look around but don't limit your search to only that particular model, have an option B so in case you dont find the best of option A, u can go for B.

Go and check with a competent mechanic too and make sure u drive it yourself and personally satisfied with it.
Once again, never rush and never agree to pay for a car because they say someone else is already negotiating for it coming to pay the next day. Lies!

Tnx a lot for ur response, really enlightening. from ur response I think the civic still meets my criteria of easy maintenance, fuel economy n affordable and available parts. ur thought sir.

Civic has really been a very rugged car especially from 1992 to 2004 model or so. It doesn't come with the leg-pull issue peculiar with the Accord so u will enjoy it.
The manual tranny is very fuel efficient, very reliable too, parts, well depends on your location.

I have a friend using the 92 version and it has become our prayer point for him to change his ride since the child he gave birth to when he bought the car has started having girlfriends already grin but sincerely speaking it served him well.

I love the looks of the 2005/2006 version better but am not sure of its relatively compared to its older generations.

@ OP, please don't go and buy a waste product. Used keke sells for 350k, imagine buying a car for 450k.

Dude only say what you know.
I have a Primera i got for lesser than that price u posted above. More than a year now, it's always on the road as i enjoy driving and even trust it's reliability even more than my camry. AC chills too wink

Only minor repairs that costs me almost nothing. (Mind you, most of these minor repairs can be negleted but i am a person that always love everything in shape, even to the smallest dent) No major repairs. Even my mechanic, as well as passengers always talk about how smooth the car is.

Your money doesn't actually matter. U can buy a Lemon for 1Million naira, at the same time u can get a sound vehicle for just 350k. Just pray, go with a competent mechanic and use your head when checking and acquiring the car. Take things easy and dont rush. You ll be ok
I actually monitored my own seller with the car for some months before i decided to check it out. lol.

OP. Am so sure you ll be good with Nissan products. Sunny, Almera, Primera and the likes. But make sure u get a good one, the cars are easy to maintain, but when thwy get abused, you can easily tell.

Golf 3 is a good ride too, personally am not a fan cos of the look and the engine noise plus AC overheating

Civic is ok. But when a used Honda starts getting old, it starts looking funny, as if the car is kinda laughing grin while others just look so tired, Even body frames and/or panel beating doesnt seem to help.

If you step up your budget just a lil' bit, you can get a Toyota corolla 2001 (Auto). I trust the ride very much too.

Gurus please I have a little issue concerning my car AC, it works well and blows cold, but the Radiator fan doesn't come on to cool the condenser and compressor.

I actually didn't allow Kazeems to remove any of my car's thermostat so the radiator fan only come up once a while when temperature rises then stop after few seconds/minutes when everything goes normal or when moving.

I believe when the AC is switched on, the radiator fan should start Automatically Just like my 2nd car but this one won't just come on.
There was a time i started the car and switched on the AC trying to see if the fan will actually come on, i waited for about 4 minutes and then the Compressor started bringing out smoke due to overheating because the fan wasn't coming on since the engine temperature itself didn't rise.

Now i am forced to only use the AC at high speed so air could blow into the system or remove one of my engine sensors to allow the fan start running immediately when the vehicle starts. Am not convenient with this as the Check Engine light is always on.

Is there something i can do about this please?
I dont want my fan running everytime the vehicle is working, neither do i want my compressor fried because fan wont respond to the AC coming on.
Is there a fault somewhere? Help please.

There is No good or bad choice anywhere. It is all about US! HUMANS!!

Who posts on Jiji, Olx and others? No be the same people that you meet all around everywhere?

Either you buy cars directly from owner, Road side sellers, a mechanic, showrooms or online adverts. If you are careful and wise, you are safe. If you are too forward, greedy and impatient. You will be a victim.

My current car was from OLX. We negotiated for a very long time before we both agreed, all the while i was monitoring him closely and physically cos i recognised the car immediately the day i saw it on the road. I knew he wasn't in a hurry to sell.

Went there with a mechanic to check when i wanted to finalise the deal after test driving.
It's almost a year now. No issue.

Bought a Chicken at an Airport in Kuala Lumpur. Was so hungry and none of the pictures in the Menu looks edible to me, not until i saw that chicken, quite expensive but i had to order.
Only for my Order to be brought and the first bite was so full of garlic and stuffs i have never tasted, like say the chicken commited offence before being sluttered.
I was like Oboy! You must chop this thing by force o.
Kai, i didnt swallow seccond bite before i carry bag and abandoned the thing.

If na naija, maybe man go carry am commot go house give madam make she remake am sad
Na so i waste money on top one unchoppable chicken wey fit buy 10 whole fowl back home and to crown it all, left the table hungrier and Angry too. It hurts.
