I have come to understand, with Nigerians, when they cannot achieve something, they try to bring you down.
I am not responsible for your financial misfortune . . if I decide to pay a mechanic 4,000 GBP to change my pads; how is it your headache, fam? I was asked a question and I answered, kapish !!!
Gazzuzz charges about 10,000 for A/C diagnosis; a regular mechanic will charge maybe 2,000 while another would jump straight at changing parts without diagnosis . . . there is a reason he charges 10,000 . . and there is a reason why we pay . . .not because we have money to waste ( poor man's thinking ). The difference is in the taste; the taste . . . you know the rest

You are very rude and insulting. That shouldnt have been. But i pardon you though, i know your type

From your posts, one can easily tell, you have got a very high degree of PRIDE! infact you stink of it. At the end, when they check people like you out, you don't weigh a thing.
Those who actually own the wealth don't make disturbing noises.

You dont even know me, we have never met. how are u so sure i v got a financial misfortune and that you are any way a step higher than me.

At this stage of my life if i start going into that kind of rants with someone we never met in physical, then i am a f.o.o.l

Why do you keep tagging GAZZUZZ unto your posts anytime i quote you. lol.
Why not leave him out of your rants.
Must you put how much he charges for AC here.?

As a matter of fact 2 of my recent tires were bought from him and it was purchased at a very reasonable price.

Just as i posted earlier, not every Auto Engineer is unreasonable. I have worked with a notable brother here, Though he quitted Nairaland now ( His posts still exists here though). Old nairalanders active in Cartalk session will know him. He was very good and his charges were reasonable even when i was expecting him to cost a fortune when i met him, no major fix ever since he fixed the car to the point of bringing it down to the country and till i sold the car.

AC is entirely up to u. I "replaced" my wife's car AC for more than 40k (compressor, dryer, tinner, gas flush) and that includes workmanship of 9k. They didnt press button and billed that, they "changed parts" .

Now tell me, how does "changing oil as maintenance routine" relates to "FIXING AC"

Actually i dont have a problem with you servicing your car with your arms, lungs and whatever you so wishes. It's not my headache, it's yours.. But the issue i have with people like you is trying to impose your beliefs on others and condemning them.

I actually feel it s actually unwise thinking, because a mechanic charged 500 or 1k for changing Brake pads, it s a death sentence, while the one that charged you 10k guarantees life.

Brother, Learn how to be humble, embrace humility cos pride kills, even faster than AIDS sometimes.

Keep your beliefs to yourself, when you feel you need to educate others, make it minimal, without insults too.

Lastly, don't assume what you dont know about others just because they gave their own opinions. Humility doesn't signify Poor and Pride doesnt mean you are Rich.
Be mature. God bless u.

Spot on . . .
Nigerian maintenance culture = zero
You expect a mechanic to change your 2 pairs of brake pads for N500 and expect not to die the following week via "brake failure accident" . .
Some would even leave the brake fluid hose hanging instead of supporting it while removing the caliper . .
which in turn might stretch (or tear it) unknowingly . . next thing = obituary poster

Say all u want bro. But that doesn't change the fact that your using almost 25k service charge (apart from the parts and oil purchased) just to change oil and brake pads is outrageous and wasteful. You think everyone are polithiefcians, looting all the resources and can decide to spend whatever they like? Hell No! Some of us work very hard to own stuffs.

An average Nigerian will own a used Camry (Not brand new) bought around a million, you expect them to spend half of that amount on the same car within a year just for a service charge to change pads and engine oil?
Who does that?

Am sure you pay 2000 naira each just to gauge each tires with an educated Vulcanizer.

Who says Educated Auto engineers don't make mistakes, are they God?

Maybe the so called Educated Auto technician should pull themselves together and review their charges so people can patronise them instead of hiding under being a professional and billing exorbitantly. This is Naija, not the US.

Truthfully, not all professional Mechanical engineers does that anyway. We v got some very reasonable ones.

makavele:

You expect a mechanic to change your 2 pairs of brake pads for N500 and expect not to die the following week via "brake failure accident" . .

Does changing only your breakpads with over 20k + service charges guarantee your own life on wheels?!

so it is the service charge of 500 naira paid to the mechanic who changed the pads that will cause the "Brake failure accident".

If you use 75k to do change oil and breakpads, i wonder how much you ll spend in putting a fault to order.
Automatically if u are a regular traveller and u do a monthly routine service. U would have spent 750,000 apart from fixing other issues within a period of 10months
If u dont have nothing else to do with money, bros donate to the needy around you. It will do u some good later in future.

Funny thing is, u will be surprised to find out most Criticisers here are the ones who visit Kazeems mostly. Some don't even know the road to a mechanical engineer's office or workshop.
Lies everywhere. That is what is killing Nigeria!

Not all Kazeems are incompetent. some just dont have the opportunity to attend tertiary institutions.

I visit Kazeem when i need to fix minor issues especially issues i can relate with, i even make sure i look up the issue online then wait and hears what he has to say.
sometimes he is busy and i wait patiently monitoring him doing mine or other cars, he might scan for codes, the name might feel strange to him since he he didn't go to school to study mechanical engineering, he searches via google image, gets the picture and works it out.

when it comes to major issue that i know will eventually turn a Kazeem into a guesser, i seek the help of the internet firstly then visit an experience engineer. Since i dont usually have major issues. I think proper supervision with my mechanic does it for me.

i guess the OP asked for how much your mechanic charges you . . . and I answered correctly . . .

p.s: OEM brakepads are not 2,500 per wheel; they cost as much as 25000 - 35000 for the 4 wheels . . .
OEM engine oil cost as much as 16500 too . . .

Bros. Relax first.
You paid 10,500 for to change an engine oil that costs 16500 seperately.

Your mechanic charges you 2,500 each wheels he replaces its Brakepads. So u use about 10,000 to replace brakepads that costs 35000
......

In other words, you actually used 72,000 naira to change oil and brake pads.

Waoh. I envy you bro.

God bless Your mechanic. He will soon buy a new car or finish his building project grin

My primera has been smoking early in the morning for few seconds once a while now, I am considering Changing the Valve stem seals since this only happens after parking for a long time and not everytime... so am only changing the seals and not Ringing the whole engine.

i have told my mechanic but he is trying to play smart by charging me the same amount for ringing a whole engine (35k). am not comfortable bn cheated.

My question is, does it take an highly professional mechanic to change Valve seals just like Ringing a whole engine?

also, does anyone who has a competent mechanic number around Ondo state who has an experience on this particular issue please send to me?

Car Talk / Re: Camry 99 Thermostat Removal by temmym4(m): 11:57am On Feb 19, 2018
This particular topic has really given me a lot of confusion in the past that i decided to ignore, then i had this experience after getting a car recently.

I took the car to my mechanic for the very first time to change the oil and filter. Then drove home, after some days i noticed every morning especially when there is cold, the vehicle seems to be a bit laggy while picking up, for instance when going over Bumps then accelerating. Not noticeable at normal driving, just when slowing down to almost Zero and picking up. This goes on till the engine works for around 10mins and heats up a bit before it gets normal, then i noticed my CHECK ENGINE light is always on.

This went on until one morning i couldnt cope with it anymore, then i opened the hood and found out one of my clips/Sensor (i dont actually know what it is called) above the engine was removed from the socket, i decided to clip it back, then i found out CHECK ENGINE light was off but my fan stopped rolling. I was worried at first, then i remember this words "THERMOSTAT" "KAZEEM" "DIRECT FAN CONNECTION".

I decided to start monitoring the Temperature guage and after some minutes of driving, it got to half. I drove for alalmost an hour, then as i got to an untarred road trying to park, i heared the fan starting to work, then after some minutes it stopped again.
Ever since i plugged that stuff back in. There has been no lag in the morning and CHECK ENGINE doesn't come on anymore and fuel consumption was much better.

My conclusion.

There is a specific temperature that the engine needs to get to in order to work perfectly.
The Thermostat prevents the engine from getting too cool or too hot.

Immediately your engine starts to get hot especially in a traffic or during AC operation, your fan comes on and also stops when the engine normalises.

I have a question for you...

Since Thermostat are meant to enable the Radiator fan to work when the engine is operating at a temperature above normal and our country weather is hot.
Why doesn't the Thermostat allow the Fan to keep working everytime due to the level of hotness in our region?

Why does it only start working once a while when your engine temperature is getting above the specific level of the manufacturer's specification?

Ask yourself this question, then you will understand why Thermostat shouldn't be removed.

No wonder when car gets here, they always end up with burnt radiator fan after some months or a year or 2 of usage

......
I had a debate with my Mechanic once when i argued with him that the car has been performing excellently in the morning when i plug what he removed..

He said, how do you quickly detect when it eventually gets faulty before it destroys your gasket or start splashing water from the bonnet when the fan refuses to work...

Then i told him, wont the same thing happen if i remove that Thermostat and the fan eventually gets burnt and stops working due to several hours of workload without rest..

The answer is simple, checking the dashboard often and paying attention to the car language.

Cars do talk, only if you understand its language!

am sure Only KAZEEMs removes Thermostats, No Mechanical Engineer will do so.

Thank you for your advise and to all those that contributed, i really appreciate your wonderful contributions. I've finally decided to settle for Audi 80.
Please which of the Audi 80 options is better (manual transmission or automatic transmission).

Get a manual Transmission. Auto isn't an option for you.

Also, i hope you are aware there are actually 2 types of Audi 80 versions (4 actually but the other 2 are very old models)

Audi 80 B3 Popularly called EGG

Audi 80 B4 called TIGER FACE.

get the B4, it is the face lifted/prettier body version of the Audi 80.
Autos / Re: Pls Which Of These Cars Is Most Suitable For Cab - Audi 80, Mazda 626, Passat by temmym4(m): 5:25pm On Feb 14, 2018
I have used 2 of the car brands you posted.
Mazda 626 and Audi 80.

I actually don't know the particular year of Mazda 626 u are actually aquiring, but in terms of physical appearance, i think mazda is ok. But only get this if u are getting a tokunbo.
Mazda cars are very good, better used as a private vehicle but when you are using it as a commercial car, pay attention to the engine. I mean real attention.

Mechanically, the strongest car i have ever had my hands on till date is an Audi 80. I always compare that car to Nokia 3310.

It depends on what your preference is though, either looks or engine.

If u dont have much to spend in terms of maintanance, Go for the Audi 80.

Car Talk / Re: I’m In A Serious Dilemma. I Think My Car Key Has Been Duplicated. by temmym4(m): 4:41pm On Feb 08, 2018
lol. i understand your predicament bros.

I was once in your similar shoe.

I bought my car used, and the only key it has was not so good, it was difficult to start the vehicle with the key.

i decided to cut a new one.

I was still a novice then so the man decided to play smart by buying a cheaper key compared to my original one.
My original key was built with a transponder chip, the one he bought was ordinary. so he removed the chip in the key, unscrew the ignition area and glued the chip there. Then he cut a new key (ordinary key without chip) .

I noticed something wasn't right, he brought d key to test the stuff, it work then he didn't return the original key immediately, instead his apprentice came and stayed with me beside d car suspiciously. I knew something was wrong.
1. That tiny thing that was removed and glued on the neck of my car
2. The apprentice that was standing close to me.

Somethin just said to me, go check what he is doing in the shop... I just matched staright to the shop, entered through the main door and not standing at the customer waiting area this time...
I saw the guy cutting another key again from my original. He paused when he saw me, then continued.
That was when i knew something was actually wrong.
He came back and told me he is trying to make 1 more key for me (as if i asked for it). I paid him and drove off, but that actually marked the first day of my worries.

I cant park in a place for long without seeing a vision of the man coming to carry my car with the extra key he would have made for himself. grin

When i couldnt sleep again, i decided to take the car to someone else who made a new key with the chip inserted into it. With this, only one key can start the engine while others can only open the trunk and door. That was when i had peace grin grin

My advice, reprogram your vehicle, and with new keys, transponders and chip. That is when you will be satisfied and stop bn paranoid, sleep well and not dreaming of key programmers stealing your car grin

Car Talk / Re: How Many Kilometres Can Your Car Travel Per Litre Of Fuel? by temmym4(m): 9:43pm On Jan 17, 2018
Primera '98 1.6L

In the City:
9 to 10KM per Litre depending on how much Hold-Up i encountered.

On the Highway:
About 15KM per Litre.

I actually checked the thread and found some lies and some errors. Bet why?

Even some converted their own fuel statistics in Miles and Gallons
Buying fuel in Litres is much more common here in our country so be realistic, calculate the amount of fuel your car actually use and stop posting what you see on other sites.

It is simple to know how many litres your car consume in Kilometers.
Saying you don't know or don't care doesn't make you smart. Bn Rich or having some little change in your pocket shouldn't make you unintelligent and ignorant. Be smart!

Know exactly where your fuel gauge is, preferably half tank or reserve, then fill up with a specific amount of fuel in Litres.
Immediately, set your odometer to 000 so it can start counting how many KM you have covered from that point onwards. (your Odometer should be on the dashboard, google your car model to find out)

Drive your vehicle till you use up the litres of fuel u bought i.e till your fuel guage is back to the position it was before u refill your Tank.

When you are done, check your odometer and see how many Kilometers you have used, then divide it with the amount of fuel you bought.

For example, If you buy 10L of fuel and at the end of the day you covered a total of 80KM before fuel guage returns to previous position, then you divide 80KM u covered by the 10L u bought. Which means your car does roughly 8KM for every 1 Litre

Make sure u don't drive aggressively throughout the hours/days you will use for the test in order to get a perfect result.

Also note that bad road, hold-ups, car health etc could contribute to increase in fuel usage.

Car Talk / Re: Best Used Car On A Budget Of below 500k by temmym4(m): 10:22pm On Jan 12, 2018
From your price range, i will recommend these cars of course based on my own experience.
1. Nissan Primera. '93 - '98 Manual/Nissan Almera '95 - '99

Definitely, my first choice of affordable cars anytime, any day.
Just like someone said once, just put fuel inside that car, and drive. It doesn't die. lol.

Used the Primera P10 for 2 years, used the Almera too for 2 years, i currently have the P11 version of Primera, though a second car now but spends more time on the road than the main. U might not even visit the mechanic as you can always attend to minor issues yourself.

Verdict.
As good as this models are, never you let it suffer when it comes to periodic servicing. It will tell on the engine.

The P11 version i bought was a nigerian used, even though it wasn't physically abused by the previous user, but you can tell from the engine as it smokes in the morning, though it seems to have corrected itself upon usage of a better engine oil. (probably the previous user hasn't been using the right oil)

Also, please for the sake of your purse, go for the Iron casted Engine 1.6 and not the Aluminium ones (1.8, 2.0) simply because it is easier to maintain and could stand abuse.
In case you are bent on buying the 2.0 Version, never ever buy if it smokes, if you do, prepare to change the engine as they don't do well with ringing, unlike the 1.6.

Fuel efficiency is superb too.
Take care of those car models and u ll enjoy it till you get tired of it

2. Audi 80
German machine. grin i will compare it to Nokia 3310 back then, this has been the toughest car i have ever used till date. Though out of vogue now but that ride na one rugged thingy. It will take absolutely every abuse. I am even wondering if that car ever dies grin
It has never disappointed me for once. Very fuel efficient too.

Verdict:
Quite out of vogue now, not so appealing to be candid.
But if u dont mind, it s worth it.

Golf 3.
Very reliable and fuel efficient too.
Just that the road noise puts me off, also problem of overheating seems to be a usual experience especially if u are the type that loves AC function.

3. Mazda 626. '97 Manual
Very strong and reliable.. Fuel efficiency is wonderful too.
The verdict is the same as most of every other Mazda 626.. "Engine issue"
626 users ll frown at me now but it is the truth anyway so learn to accept it.
Pay attention to your oil guage as when the car ages, the engine weakens, starts shorting oil and/or starts smoking. You don't know how far the previous user abused the car.
On this particular model, don't bother ringing, it s not Worth the money. Don't try it, just buy a new engine.

The list goes on and on but those are the ones i can remember and i have owned, (based on your current budget)

Please note that all the cars i mentioned are with Manual transmissions.
If you want an Automatic tranny, increase your budget as it might be tricky finding a well used Auto with your price,
And go check with a competent mechanic so u won't end up with a Lemon. I fear naija when it comes to using vehicles.

Focus is a good ride, a friend uses it. But to be candid, that ride is sweet only when u get it as Tokunbo, when it start having issues.. Hmmmm.

Honda is a sweet ride.. Ur budget will get u from Accords from 93 to 98 (Halla, bulldog, Bullet, babyboy)
The only issue i v got with Accords are the catastrophic and embarrassing leg pull.

No offence Honda Lovers, but i get to wonder why an abused model gets to look like a granny easily.

A car is as good as its maintenance. Treat it right and it will serve you well.

Also know this. Owning a car is not about Ego only. Driving one of the best car in town but struggling to put it on the road because of your purse or because of an illness it's got but u eventually went for it because u want to drive that particular model,

Be sincere with yourself, know what you can handle and maintain
Someone's Audi 80 spark plug could cost 150, That same plug for Camry could cost up to 5k. At the end of the day when Camry breaks down and the owner couldnt afford it at that particular moment, The owner of that working Audi is better off. Na to see Camry owner and offer him a lift self.
Think deeply before u make a choice.
God help you.

Getting to his workshop, my Fuel gauge was already ½. Opening the Tank and we saw that Fuel was filled to the brim.

Attached are the pictures before and After.
