Politics › Re: On-going Strike By Lagos Doctors by texazzpete(m): 2:31pm On May 03, 2012
Pennywise: The reason for the on-going strike by doctors in Lagos hospitals appear rather hazy. It is said that there are two sides to every coin. At the moment the only side in the media is the government side which is that resident doctors and house officers are demanding teaching allowances for their input in the training of medical students. This is yet to be refuted by the Guild of medical doctors behind the strike. Until a contrary position is made available by the other side it will form the basis of my opinion on the strike issue.

At once my view of the doctor's position is that it is obscene, it is immoral and even criminal and therefore the organizers deserve to be prosecuted and jailed for every loss of life or injury suffered by patients in these hospitals.

Teaching was not in your job description therefore you have no right to insist on payment for a job you neither signed for or known to have done. If you did it and you feel your input is not being appreciated then you are free to stop. You have no right or justification to withhold other services for which you get a just remuneration by going on strike.

Their going on strike is nothing short of a criminal behaviour. Resident doctors and house officers are not part of the academic commune involving lecturers and students, interaction in the wards not withstanding. If they want to teach medical students alongside their own training then this can be negotiated and specific assignments will be given to them. But what happens if a resident doctor fails or keeps failing in his exam? And these same resident doctors keep impacting toxic knowledge on the students. In order words only fellowship certification guarrantees a mastery of knowledge and skill that is worth paying for.

Secondly, if the government gives in to this blackmail then it will have no reason not to pay nurses, pharmacists, optometrists and lab scientists similar entitlements.

Today's politicians are businessmen who have no clue about governance. All they yearn is 'stability' so they can loot as much as possible. Fashola's govt will be creating a dangerous precedent in the country if it accedes to this demand.

The present executive of the guild of medical doctors have embarrassed all doctors. There is only one thing left for them to do- resign en mass and tender an unreserved apology to the good people of Lagos state and the govt.
There are no 'good people of Lagos State'. There are only SHEEP.

Doctors have gone on strike repeatedly over failure of the Lagos State government to live up to agreements and solutions agreed on in the past. Before the Lagos State govt was babbling last year about requiring the House to pass the budget before the demands were implemented. Now it's this ridiculous blackmail that's making the rounds.

I don't care to know if it's teaching allowance or not...The Lagos doctors are not demanding anything above what their federal counterparts are receiving. What is so wrong with that? What is so wrong with doctors asking for remuneration commensurate with the years they have put in in terms of education, the risks they face in their workplace (accidental infections, beatings and abuse from irate family members, HIV etc), the late working hours for those on call, the trauma of immersing themselves in blood and gore day in day out. They deserve to be well paid. Foolish people will babble about the doctors' oaths to preserve life...but Nigeria is not a normal country where dedication to that oath will be rewarded.
I have NEVER heard of any Lagos Landlord slashing house rents for medical doctors. I have NEVER heard of Silverbird, Genesis or other big shopping malls/event centres giving doctors a special discount. They pay the same bills as anyone else and thus they share the same need to make as much money as they can to support their families.

The people of Lagos should hold themselves responsible for this in some way. This is the THIRD major strike in 2 years and still they have not yet seen the need to demand for sanity in their leaders. Their leaders can afford all the bravado...they are covered by private hospitals. Lagosians should gather their balls and call their leaders to order. Pending that, let them continue to suffer. Na only suffering dey redeem Nigerians sef.

This is the same way the Government of Nigeria carried out their insidious and brainless campaign of calumny against ASUU, drowning all legitimate demands by ASUU under accusations of selfishness on the part of the lecturers. Now our Universities today are Pathetic!

Brixtonyute: I just laugh when some ignorant gorillas think there's no external influence in the wave of terrorist attacks in Nigeria. The sophistication, and targets show this is not solely about religion. If it was solely about religion - Benue, Plateau, and most SE states would be the target..

A lot of Americo-phile Nigerians are naive!
Of course there's an external influence you numbskull. Al Qaeda has made some preliminary contacts with leading elements of Boko Haram.

Plateau has been a target in the past...but does it take much brainpower to understand why Boko Haram's efforts are for now concentrated in the northern areas where they hold sway?
If unchecked, you will have your wish of Boko Haram carrying out operations in the south. For now they still are a relatively unsophisticated group...wait until they buy light mortars and anti-tank weapons.

If I ask you people now to list any possible motive the US would have for destabilizing Nigeria and spreading islamic fundamentalism in the largest black muslim population in the world, what will you say?

ifihearam: 2 Boko Haram Spies Ran Mad At Winners Chapel Otta

Two weeks ago,2 suspected Boko Haram spies who was sent to get the schematics of the Living Faith Church aka Winners Chapel's building apparently ran mad as soon as they stepped their foot in church premises. They confessed to have been sent to get a full plan of the church for a possible bomb attack but they received madness instead.

As at then the presiding Bishop was in America when this happened, it was announced in church during one of the services. Those in the know will confirm this.
Boko Haram don't need any schematics. They just drive straight through and blow stuff up.

Tell another story!

london2lasgidi: You're dumber than your name sounds.

What would CIA gain?? Can you see how dumb that question is??

What did CIA gain from Libya? But didn't they mess up the country regardless?

What would they gain from Syria? We all know they're behind the uprising over there.

I believe in the CIA doctrine, which says: "the unstable and smaller the country, the easier to exploit", go figure.
I wonder when you will start blaming the CIA for your girlfriend cheating on you.
While the US government would have shed no tear over Gadaffi's removal (him being a terrorist loving scumbag and no friend of the white house), who are the 'we' that 'know' that the CIA is behind the Syrian riots?
Shebi the same 'we' all know that Syria's Assad is the most loving, benevolent ruler in the world? And that the CIA has snipers shooting Syrian citizens abi? And that the CIA has paid out ALL the Arab league observers that condemn the killing abi?

The US has everything to lose and nothing to gain from a disunited Nigeria in the throes of a civil war. Intervention is not guaranteed and any damage to our oil infrastructure (and there most definitely will be!) will be costly and time consuming to fix. Couple that with a hike in oil prices and the risk of the radicalization of over 60 million muslims in Nigeria and you'd be utterly insane to even think this is possible.

Hell, what am I saying? You ARE insane!
Politics › Re: 'US Behind Terrorist Attacks In Nigeria' by texazzpete(m): 7:23am On May 03, 2012
Is there no limit to human stoopidity?

So the CIA wants to drastically destabilize one of the most stable countries supplying them oil? The CIA is also striving to destabilize the Government of a man from the Niger Delta zone, who is a very staunch supporter of the US so far? A man from the Niger Delta during whose presidency the oil has continued to flow, almost unchecked?

So according to you the CIA may be planning to plunge Nigeria into civil war which will not only seriously raise the price of oil (costing the US economy billions and billions of dollars) but then leave the US really dependent on the increasingly more volatile middle east for their oil lifeblood?

You people are Grade A m0r0ns. I am so upset when I think of all the very very intelligent people I know that are dead - eg my ex-classmates Micky Olu and Jude Mgba who died of stroke and malaria respectively - and yet im'beciles like you guys above are here still alive and kicking.

An Oil palm research centre is not nearly on the same level as a 'naval research centre'.

Improvements on palm seeds quality is something that is usually done in universities in saner climes. Not a multi-billion naira 'research centre'. Let the Government fund our Universities instead so you kill two birds with one stone: research and development and competence building in our graduates.

Anyway, since you lot voted for a man that told the entire nation that the only problem facing our Universities is 'poor education', why am i not surprised?

PrettyCindy: Whether it was an assasination attempt or not, his simplicity played a huge role here. The tipper targetted the vehicle with flag which is the official vehicle but the Governor wasn't inside rather he was driving the first car, a BMW himself. That is one thing about the Governor, power doesn't freak him, he still lives his life like the average man on the street. So the tipper driver if truely he was paid to kill the Governor never knew that the Governor wasn't in the official gov. car. Mind you am not from Edo state neither do i belong to any political party. Someone said a few days ago before the accident that PDP must regain power in Edo states no matter what it takes..........well add one and one together and whatever you arrive at, na you sabi ooo!
First you say "Whether it was an assassination attempt or not"

Then you say " The tipper targeted the vehicle with the flag"

Can you make up your mind?

lastpage: Thank you very much!
I was expecting this sort of analysis from peeps here instead of the usual "tribal rants" we are getting.
It seems we under-rate the "efficacy of RESEARCH" in our daily progress and life in general.
A Naval research institute IS NOT A WASTE OF FUNDS.

For example, most military hardware and new technologies used in warfare/defense and even deterrence, are products of "research institutes".

Even if the Naval Research Institute succeeded in coming up with say for example, a prototype to build "small boats with advanced Navigational facilities on board", it has justified its existence because such boats can be used as Ferries for our inland waterways transportation (as of today, you have to import one), such boats can be used by sea-going fishermen, such boats can be used for "shallow sea" search and rescue, e.t.c.

And l am sure that with the level of intelligence of Nigerians and some strategic foreign collaboration, such research institute can serve as a basis for much development not to mention the amount of jobs it could create (in terms of ancillary services as well)!

I dont care where it is sited, (at least we dont expect it to be like the Nigerian Ports Authority that was moved from Lagos, to a "dry zone" like Abuja!), as long as the "objective of setting it up" is maintained.

By the way, like someone said, the Senator needs to tell the nation why she thinks "its a waste of fund", not just make some silly assertion and then conclude that it should be scrapped.

At this stage, this nation needs a lot more research institutes and the "inventions" of such institutes needs to be funded and commercialized ASAP.
Go to our universities and other tertiary institutions (research Institutes as well) and see how so many 'research products' lie on the shelf, waiting for commercialization!
No wonder we still import Bicycle from India, even the one for our kids, that an ordinary Iron welder can "put together" for peanuts!

How are we going to ever develop with this kind of attitude?

This is not about Jonathan, PDP or Bayelsa state, it is about creating the required infrastructure for future development.
Nuff said.

Maybe the money should be "diverted into more allowances" for the Sin-a-tor's pocket ?
How are we ever going to develop with YOUR attitude? Our universities lack research centres and research grants and yet you're babbling about this PR project. In saner climes, a large chunk of industry changing research and innovation is done in the Universities!

Sometimes I think Nigerians are cursed with foolishness. This is how Nigerians were joining their 'facebook president' in celebrating the launch of the first 'Nigerian' satellite while no single school in Nigeria offered any courses in advanced aeronautics, rocketry and space technologies.

[quote author=Find Out!]the timing of this story is suspect. VERY suspicious. The massacre on christians at BUK too is very suspicious as well. Its like these two events were planned to deflect attention from:

i)The statement made by the NSA labelling bh as political.

ii) The highly likely & quite obvious fact (even b4 the NSA's speech) that boko haram is political & isnt sponsored by any taliban/bin Laden/islamic bank (however silly that sounds) , but by Nigerian politicians....with Nigerian money. (the north & its sorrounding border countries e.g. Niger republic have provided d ''raw materials'' i.e. poor stupid illiterate almajiris who can easily be brainwashed into bombing themselves).

iii) The subsidy probe panel report & the actions to be taken(or avoided) thereafter.

Can any of our very well versed muslim brothers/sisters correct/analyze the many 'bloody' verses (mostly quoted out of context) an earlier poster brought out of the Qur'an, the same book that accords a lot of respect to Jesus Christ (A.S.).

And to that poster, since u are soo well versed in Quranic verses ( & i assume, islam), you can like to ask yourself why its just in d latter part of last century/early ds century that muslims started ''smiting'' and ''fighting'' xtians/unbelievers. i would appreciate if u culd xtend your research to the battles fought by the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) himself in his lifetime & tell us if any of those battles wasnt borne out of self defence or if women, children & even harmless men not on d battle field were attacked in those battles. Heck, tell us if any of those wars were against xtians!

Keep spreading your propaganda if u wish, but Islam will continue to grow, & inshaAllah, the bad eggs among us who continue to carry out evil and abominable acts in d name of islam will be made to pay for their crimes. The N900 is an outdated, brick phone with a now slow processor, ageing GPU and a resistive screen. Its fans babble about it being a 'computer'. Savvy smartphone users know that its time is long since up...its users are masochistic fellows who thrive on the idea of wrestling with their phones while they lose out out the modern app revolution.

Frankly speaking, there's no sensible reason now to recommend the N900 over any decent Android phone.

you mention htc one x and galaxy nexus not having mem. card expansion yet those are just two phones out of the 100s of androids out there. android gives you choice. why can't apple do the same.
'Excuse'? What's the 'excuse' for a feature that is not natively supported on the 4 most prominent mobile platforms? What's your excuse for Android then? Aside from Samsung's patched-in implementation on their Touchwiz skinned phones, practically no other Android phone carries this feature and certainly not on any 'Google Experience' devices.
So...Google bills the stock Android devices as the essential Android experience...and does not support 3g video telephony...Have you forgotten this is an iPhone vs Android comparison discussion? Weird!

To be honest I find this particular point to be just as silly as the 'java apps' point. Practically all users will turn to the likes of Skype anyway for video calling.

What i find laughable is that while you suggest that Facetime is limited because it's only iPhone to iPhone, you are babbling about 3g video telephony which most Android devices, Blackberries, iPhones and Windows Phone handsets are excluded from using...which leaves an extremely limited pool of Nokia symbian phones and ageing windows mobile phones in Nigeria.

Keep flogging this point...just adds to my conviction that you're running out of ideas grin

As for the memory card point, my point is simple; If the two most definitive, premium Android handsets can make do without expandable memory, so can the iPhone. isn't that obvious? Do I need to point you to the Google Galaxy Nexus liveblog to see how the ICS toting flagship was billed as THE definitive Android experience?

You have choices between 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. That's even more choices than HTC gives you with their One X (only available in 32GB) grin

You can drag this point on and on in a brainless manner by babbling about 'choices' with varying storage options. Please don't waste both our time.

tobeski: are you not the same person that said

and

see how you contradict yourself so easily?? i'll just assume you're not in the right frame of mind right now or you were rushing when you typed this. i can't think of any other explanation.
You claimed I said Bluetooth was outdated. I ask you again, where did I say that?!

For the avoidance of all doubt, and for other people as ignorant as yourself, I will say this.

BLUETOOTH IS NOT THE SAME AS BLUETOOTH FILE TRANSFER!!!!!

I indicated that Bluetooth file transfer protocol is not nearly as prevalent or relevant today as it once was. You need to stop showcasing your ignorance here when you insinuate that anyone thinks Bluetooth is outdated. Many millions of iPhone users use their Bluetooth every day for listening to music with headphones and handsfree through car stereo. You'll be happy to know the iPhone 4S supports Bluetooth 4.0 which isn't yet prevalent in Android devices grin

tobeski: i asked you about multitasking. you're talking about gpu acceleration. Off point once again. u have no point there because there was no need for gpu acceleration. you're the only one that knows which android used to lag
You made a snarky comment about multitasking taking too long to arrive in the iPhone in 2010. I replied in the same vein, asking why it took until Q4 2011 for GPU hardware acceleration to arrive. Why are you complaining?
FYI, even the most die-hard Android fanboy out there will agree that prior to Gingerbread and dual core processors, Android was not nearly as smooth as iOS. Go and read any review off Engadget or any major tech site for Eclair, Donut and FroYo devices...Are you sure you've used Android extensively?

My Galaxy Tab 8.9 with a Dual core Tegra 2 processor and Honeycomb 3.0 lags between homescreens. Why do you think many Xda rom cooks talk about overclocking to reduce lag?

tobeski: I was hilighting apple's general poor hardware
Reviewers at Anandtech noted that the increased heat output in the new iPad is as a result of the powerful GPU (much more powerful than in any Android device out there) and noted that the heat did not become uncomfortable. Ditto for Consumer reports which rates the new iPad as the best tablet out there. How does that seem like 'general poor hardware to you'?

This is just silly speak and is tantamount to someone taking the Asus Transformer Prime's GPS issues, the Samsung Galaxy S Captivate's poor GPS and plasticky builds on many Samsung devices and making a general statement that the build quality in Android devices is 'generally poor'.

Again, stay classy.

Finally, it seems I forgot to log out of my brother's profile on this PC...yes the post above made by 'Smooth278' is mine.

tobeski: Looks like my previous post just became invisible to texazzpete. just what you'd expect from an apple fanboy
I have been in the company clinic for 2 hours over a migraine...I have a life outside here, you know. I think typing the previous response gave me that headache grin

Sorry for not responding to your posts...i'll tackle it when I get myself sorted out

Here's a quick test for you folks.

jedisco, let's say you take a photo of your friend Blink182. Blink182 requests you to send him the photo. What do you do?

a) Select Send via bluetooth,
Wait 5-10 seconds for the bluetooth radio to initialize (because no normal person would have their bluetooth on throughout, draining battery)
wait 30 - 40 seconds for the Bluetooth scanning to complete and detect Blink182's phone.
Select Send and stand in place (within 10 metres of blink182)

or

b) Select send Via email
Wait 2 seconds for the email compose window to come up
Type in email and click send

Now tell me, which is faster? I am even being rather generous in terms of bluetooth radio startup time...plus in many smartphones the Send via Bluetooth option is buried under menu layers.
On the plus side, sending via email means Blink182 now can easily access the image on ALL his phones, ALL his computers anywhere in the world.

Naturally, this assumes a Wifi connection or a data plan. But if you have a smartphone and no data plan, you should NOT be discussing here!

jedisco: I was just reading along and smiling until I saw this. Infact it really drove me insane. Did someone just type this?

1. This is 2012 and its absolutely naive for someone to be making a case supporting the absence of the Bluetooth feature on mobile devices.
Dude did you just mention email? Its like saying one should buy a laptop without wifi cos it has a port for a usb modem.
So if someone sees a picture or song on my phone and wants it, I would have to send it through a mail? In 2012? Man you've got no point here.
I even thought you were referring to NFC support only for you to mention email.
Correction. The iPhone HAS bluetooth, just not bluetooth file transfer.
Secondly, I had to go over my posts carefully just to make sure I wasn't seeing things...where exactly did i 'support' the absence of Bluetooth on the iPhone? All i simply said was that this is 2012...not 2004 when I spent lots of time transferring wallpapers and ringtones to my Nokia Ngage. Bluetooth file transfer is no longer the only means of file transfer and the frequency of use is vastly reduced.
Will I buy a phone because once in a year I may want to receive a photo from someone? Never! And with an iPhone and a Blackberry with data plans, i'd much rather receive a photo via email where I KNOW it will always be there than standing in place for a minute because someone wants to use Bluetooth to send it to me.

In the 2 years i've owned and used a Blackberry device, I have used my Bluetooth only ONCE to transfer a file. For me, it is a non-essential. Since the iPhone is the highest selling smartphone in the world, it's clear tens of millions of people feel the same.

You Wifi Analogy doesn't hold water, sorry. Wifi is a critical feature, bluetooth is NOT.

I think you folk need to move along with technology.

jedisco: 2. Java althoug quite old still comes in handy for me as I've got a few java apps which I use quite often and its a feature I will still like available for the time being.
All those Java apps have since been supplanted by native iOS and Android apps that deliver more functionality in a more stable, attractive package. I challenge you to mention some of these apps and demonstrate that there is no better app in the 425,000 app strong Android market.

jedisco: 3. Did you just mention .zip being a niche item?
You've got alot of explaining to do there.
C'mon, my file manager and zip manager come in just as handy. Over 50% of files I download online are in zip format. So you mean I would be unable to use this files on a smartphone or I would have to look for their native formats which are most times unavailable.
Do I really NEED to define the word 'niche' for you?

The vast majority of people out there do not need the ability to open .zip files.
However, for those who need it, the jailbreak app 'iFile' is a file manager with ZIP and RAR support.

jedisco: 4. You've never wanted to save a webpage?
Man if you want to lie to us, tell ur a lie you would believe.
I will pay to have some of my saved web pages
Why would I want to save a webpage? If i need to revisit content i'd rather save a bookmark or favorite that page and view the most up-to-date info when next i want to revisit that content.

For those who really want to actually SAVE pages, the free Pocket app (formerly 'Read it later') on the Appstore allows you save content for viewing later, even when offline. it's FREE!

The Cydia app 'Weboffline' lets you save pages just like on a computer too.

So while saving pages is not a must-have feature for me, iOS users are not left out.

jedisco: In summary, if you're going to make a point for ios, then you should understand that all mobile platforms be it symbian, windows, android e.t.c have their flaws. You don't get any point by trying to deny them. You should rather focus on the high points of your device.

Mind you I'm not in support of android, I just don't like people insulting my intelligence.
Did you not read the part where I talked about every smartphone OS having 'pros and cons'? I have taken time to dispel some of the obvious items of misinformation in this thread. Things like 'lack of java support' are a real hilarious joke and for someone to say the highest selling smartphone in the world is a 'toy' because it does not support a scarcely used feature like bluetooth file transfer is just laughable.

Arn't those making that argument stup!d people?
They really say Nigerians hate reading. embarassed
The order was to the office of the Petroleum Minister...and unless vacated it remains a standing presidential directive.

Knowing how much you love this woman, I expected you to get all Voltron on us in this thread. But really, is that the best defence you could come up with?
