Reptyle: How many of the so-called States paying CONMESS have up to half of the numbers of doctors practising in Lagos? How many of those states have up to a quarter of the number of the Lagos State civil service? How many of those States are contending with the challenges that Lagos State faces with regard to dearth and decay of public infrastructure and an over bloated population?

I have spent time in Borno and I know that as at the time I was there, 2009 to be precise, Borno State had less than 100 doctors spread across 33 primary healthcare institutions. It got so bad at a time that the government had to resort to employing Egyptian consultants to complement its local medical workforce. Is that the State you would want to compare with Lagos State with its over 1000 doctors?

Let us be objective in our comments please!!!
Instead of being 'objective' why don't you try being 'logical' first?

You start babbling about the population in Lagos state being an excuse not to pay CONMESS..forgetting that the large population negatively skews the doctor-patient ratio to 1000/15000000 which is one doctor to 15 thousand people!

How can any educated person see that ratio, see how overworked Lagos State doctors are and still begrudge them an equivalent welfare package with their peers?

Envy and brainless Fashola worship has blinded you folks to logic and common sense. Nigerians NEVER learn.

When you sort out the obvious Fashola propaganda, the clear message to be gleaned from this is that from Fashola's continous reference to a possibility of recall of the doctors, the man has left himself a face-saving back door to return to status quo.

Meh. When you drill down to it, these leaders are almost all the same. Corrupt, power drunk demagogues.

Also of note...many refineries are closing down in the US because of low profit margins or sustained losses.

I remember telling many of the folks on NL here that the stories from the FG that Nigeria would soon be awash with companies desperate to build refineries were just plain lies! Not many believed me. Na wa!
Politics › US Cuts Demand For Nigerian Crude by texazzpete(op): 7:52pm On May 27, 2012
Nigeria is losing the United States as its biggest oil customer amid surging output and refinery closures in North America, prompting Africa’s top producer to ship its crude twice the distance to Asia.
U.S purchases of Nigerian crude fell to a five-year low in February, knocking the OPEC member to sixth from fifth among suppliers to the world’s largest oil consumer, Energy Department data show, Bloomberg reports.
To offset the trend, the country is sending cargoes to Asia, where refiners are set to increase imports in June to the highest in a year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Qua Iboe, a light oil that’s Nigeria’s most abundant grade, slumped to an 18-month low in April as buyers in Asia that typically use cheaper, heavier crudes, demanded price cuts to cover the cost of shipping it halfway around the world.
The voyage from the Bonny Terminal in Nigeria to Tianjin, China, is 12,172 miles, compared with 5,847 miles to New York Harbour.
“It’s a very plausible scenario that one day the U.S won’t need to import crude oil from Nigeria,” said Olivier Jakob, managing director at Petromatrix, a Zug, Switzerland-based consultant. “The U.S is awash with light crude. Nigerian crude may need to be priced at a discount to go to new markets in Asia.”
Boosted by drilling in shale-rock formations such as North Dakota’s Bakken and Texas’ Eagle Ford, crude production in the U.S rose to 6.24 million barrels a day in the week ended May 18, the highest level since 1999, government data show. The country’s Nigerian oil imports fell to 352,000 barrels a day in February, about a third of the amount purchased a year earlier, according to the Energy Department.
Refiners are closing plants on the U.S East Coast, the main destination for Nigerian exports, amid falling returns. Sunoco idled the 194,000-barrel-a-day Marcus Hook plant in Pennsylvania on December 1.
The company also said it would decide by July whether to halt production at its 355,000-barrel-a-day Philadelphia plant. ConocoPhillips stopped its 190,000-barrel-a-day Trainer, Pa., site on September 30. The facilities together account for half of East Coast processing capacity.

“The U.S. is losing its position as a lead buyer of Nigerian crude,” said David Wech, an analyst at JBC Energy in Vienna.
The slide in Nigeria’s status as a U.S. supplier marks the decline of a relationship that dates from 1961, when Texaco Overseas began operations in the African producer. The country kept up exports to the U.S even as attacks by militant groups in the Niger Delta cut output by more than 28 per cent from 2006 to 2009.
Reduced U.S demand still hasn’t curtailed Nigeria’s exports. Crude and condensate sales are on course to rise to 2.27 million barrels a day next month, close to their highest level in 10 months, according to loading programs obtained by Bloomberg News.
Demand for Nigeria’s oil may also be supported by South Africa as it seeks replacement sources amid international sanctions against Iran.

Nobody can pin this solely on GEJ, but he's the guy in place right now to ensure this doesn't happen. What is he doing?
Shell released a press statement not long ago complaining about the dire effects of this illegal bunkering. Why has there been no statement of intent from the presidency?

Jmaine, answer this question honestly...which is more important 1) Going to town on Buhari for his 'dogs and baboons' story or 2) Coming out to reassure the nation of steps you plan to take to curb an illegal activity that steals billions of dollars from the nation yearly and heavily pollutes the environment?

At some point GEJ's gooing to have to gather his balls together and take steps to secure the future of this nation. Leaving the Niger Delta in the hands of the criminal elite (as he seems to be doing) will not help anyone, least of all his people.

Actually, I think we're just being impatient. Let's see where Fashola is going with this. Most of us who commented here are on the outside looking in, and hear ridiculously biased versions of the truth. I don't know the truth either, but I do know, that Fashola isn't being unreasonable. Has anyone here ever been to a Lagos state hospital? These doctors are like Nepa, evn when they aren't on strike, their functionality is below par. They show up at 10am for outpatient clinics, and if 10 drs are assigned to work there, be very thankful if u get 5. Surgeries are postponed all the time for completely frivolous reasons. Actually, I was on their side when I heard at first that they were fighting for better working conditions, in which case I thought ALL hospital workers shld join in. But more salary? For what?! These ppl leave house officers (newly grad students) alone at the emergency section to do what they like with people's lives. And having them constantly threaten us with strikehuh?! Why aren't people annoyed bou that? They r always either on strike, threatening to go on strike, or just resuming! Ah ahn!
Fashola is a learned, responsible adult, let's see where he's going with this before we crucify him.
If you studied Mathematics in school, you should be able to compute the Doctor-patient ratio is Lagos. Divide 17 million by 1000 doctors.

That's 1 doctor to 17000 people.

Some of you kids watch ER, House MD and Greys Anatomy and expect something similar when you come to Nigeria. LMAO!

Akainzo: For those of you insisting that Lagos State government must or should pay equivalently with the Federal government, I havea small question;

a) How many of you have paid your gateman the same rate as the big man on your street?
b) How many of you have contributed the same rates as the big-man when fixing your estate roads?

If you accept that you cannot or shouldn't base your pay on the big man's own, why expect the same of LASG?
So why did Fashola pay the Federal govt negotiated minimum wage of 18k per month to civil servants? Explain that grin

Hint: 2011 was an election year...
Politics › Re: NUPENG Threatens Strike Over Sacked Lagos Doctors by texazzpete(m): 9:09am On May 27, 2012
Eko Ile: What's there to mediate really? Mediation means negotiating and compromising, but the doctors are om strike because the want 100% of what they asked for/ So, are they ready to move or it still the same pay us what we want or we keep striking?

These greedy doctors have overused and abused their strike options, they are in a panic mode because the state did what they thought would never happened because they are gods.

These doctors and the NMA are morons I tell you. Now they are demanding that the state lawmakers intervene when in fact they did and were lambasted by these unprofessional clowns called doctors. There is a reason why all the state elders and even the Oba are staying clear and it's because they've begged these useless doctors times uncountable before, during and after their so many strikes, but they gave everybody the middle finger, now people are tired and sick of them. The attitude now is they can go to hell.

No doctor is above anybody in Lagos state. They are not above Lagos taxpayers they collects their salaries from, they are not above their employer and they are not above Lagos state and the laws of Lagos state.
Naturally, you're paid well enough by the Fashola administration that you can seek care in the nearest private clinic. Can't you and your paymasters spare a thought for the average, struggling Lagosian?

I laugh whenever I hear someone use the word 'greedy' to describe the striking doctors. So asking for the same pay level as your federal counterparts is now 'greed' abi? If Fashola claims he is not mandated to pay on the same level as the Federal government, why did he then agree to pay state civil servants the N18,000 minimum wage that was agreed by the Federal Government and NLC?

Oh, I forgot. Last year was an election year so he had no choice.

Please tell your master to put aside his overbloated ego and use his common sense to resolve this issue. We all know that the incremental cost in implementing their demands is nowhere near astronomical. It is hilarious when Fashola uses the Lagos population as the reason why he 'cannot afford' the doctors demands (as other states have implemented) yet fails to realize that that only puts him in a bad light when one considers the doctor-patient ratio in Lagos. grin

naptu2: Lagos condemns NUPENG’s subterfuge solidarity strike

LAGOS State Government on Saturday condemned the recourse to blackmail and arm-twisting by the Nigeria Medical Association and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers Union (NUPENG) on the issue of medical doctors sacked in the state over an illegal strike.

The state government in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Lateef Ibirogba, said it would soon be clear to the people that it was NUPENG whose stock in trade was to call a strike at every flimsy excuse that was seeking to inflict more pains on the people through its sympathy strike and not the government.

Noting that NUPENG had shown clearly by its rash ultimatum that it had a clear political agenda, the commissioner said it was most unfortunate that NUPENG’s voice was not raised in defence of doctors in the military hospitals who have not been paid for nine months.

According to the statement, NUPENG should not use the doctors’ strike as subterfuge to get back at the Lagos State Government for spearheading the much needed clearing of Apapa which had become a nightmare to lawful residents and businesses in the area due to indiscriminate parking and blockade of the roads by tanker drivers.

The statement also noted that the medical profession was one that had always been a refined profession guided by decorum from its members as distinct from the present set of political jobbers who were masquerading as medical doctors and issuing unguarded statements like the ones from the leadership of the NMA in the Federal Capital Territory and Oyo State.

According to the commissioner, the state government would not be stampeded or intimidated by the antics of politically sponsored unions into abdicating its responsibilities to the citizenry and the rest of its workforce, adding that the dictatorship of a union to the detriment of the well being of the society will not stand.

What's with this Lagos ACN government and their craze to label anything against them as being 'political'?

first they went to town with the media, claiming that the doctors strike was 'political'. Next the Lekki protesters were 'misguided by political opposition'. Now the NUPENG threat is being termed 'politically motivated'.

I wish these people would just keep quiet and provide good leadership!
Politics › Re: NNPC: "Oil Thieves Have Hijacked Political Power!" by texazzpete(m): 8:37am On May 27, 2012
At the very least, doesn't this suggest to everyone that the amnesty programme is a colossal failure? Doesn't this call into question GEJ's wisdom in allocating more money to amnesty payments than the health sector?
Doesn't this call into question GEJ's 'wisdom' in handing a massive role in our coastal waterways security to a company headed by Tom Polo, a former MEND commander?

No matter which way anyone wants to spin it, the blame doesn't stop too far from GEJ's table.

princey83: Watching as events unfold. After the doctors get their demand, the other civil service workers would make similar demands, e.g. nurses would make similar demand, then the pharmacist, then the radiographers, then those guys that take blood for analysis in the lab, then the teachers, then the meat sellers, then the lawyers, then the engineers, then the BRT drivers, then nurtw. its gonna be a long continuous cycle. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
If all these people are being paid less than their counterparts in the federal civil service, then by all means let them go on strike. Why should a laborer be denied just payment for his dues?

Some of you here are collecting improved salaries from the minimum wage implementation...would you have been pleased if Fashola had claimed he could not pay the minimum wage of 18k agreed by the Federal government?

What the president has noted is so profound. It is one of the core reason Nigeria is shyte! How can a system with half baked graduates produce anything? Whether it is power or agriculture or infrastructure, no country has been able to transform itself without the aid of serious research and researchers. The secret of the new Asia are the professors and professionals who came back from the western world to commit their knowledge to rebuilding their countries.

If GEJ or anyone can trigger that kind of reverse brain drain, he/they will be true legends.

What we have now is a clueless President who thrives on soundbites and lamentation. Sadly, he is ably supported by arse-kissers like yourself!

And for all the people shouting people are dying, people are dying, people still died when the doctors where still in service. Why cant these doctors strike for better equipments, infrastructure, advanced medical tools, improved facilities if they had the people in mind. Many of these sacked doctors are even more committed in their private clinics than govt hospitals. If they had gone on strike for issues that affected the people, then it would be justified, not going on strike and crying wolf because they want to earn more than the councilors when they could go into politics and earn like the councilor or even more like Mimiko and Ngige!
To Fashola, the doctors are not indispensable. he can easily afford to send his family overseas to treatment.

To ordinary Lagosians, these doctors are indispensable. Go and find out how many people are happy about the strike situation.

Secondly, you end up parroting the same imbecilic statements that have no iota of common sense. The doctors don't want to earn more than councillors. The Lagos state doctors just want to earn THE SAME as their federal counterparts at LUTH.

Is that REALLY so hard for you to understand?!
And for all the people shouting people are dying, people are dying, people still died when the doctors where still in service.
Far more people live when Doctors work.
If they had gone on strike for issues that affected the people, then it would be justified
On top of rank cowardice, many Nigerians sadly are not very intelligent. You're a prime example. The welfare (and thus motivation) of a doctor is a critical item that affects all the patients he sees. A calm, settled and happy doctor is less likely to make errors, more likely to pay attention to each patient and should be much more focused on the job. Tell me again how this does not affect people.

naptu2: I was taught that even though your cause may be right, the way you go about making your case/demand is also very important. I pity my siblings and friends who have been put in this situation by the NMA.

1) The fact is that doctors are overworked. People often by-pass the primary and secondary health care centres and go straight to the tertiary hospitals, thereby over working doctors there.

2) Doctors face a lot of pressure and psychological and emotional trauma because they deal with human lives. How easy is it to watch a human being die? It certainly isn't easy.

3) Doctors work for long hours without rest.

The working conditions of doctors in Lagos is similar to the working conditions of policemen.

1) Policemen work long shifts, because we do not have enough policemen.

2) Policemen watch their friends/colleagues (sometimes best friends and neighbours, who are godfather to their cHildren, etc) die and then have to go back on the job the next day (without counselling/psychological evaluation), knowing that they could be next.

3) Policemen know that they could be killed the next minute and their family might not receive anything from the government, instead, they would be thrown out of the barracks.

4) Policemen work with little or no equipment. They have to buy and sew their police uniforms, fuel their patrol vans, etc from their own pocket. They lack bullet-proof vests, etc.

However, I would not support a situation where policemen would go on the street, block traffic and shoot people as a means of protesting their poor work conditions.
1) Doctors are not going out to kill people.
2) Policemen do not spend up to a tenth of the time, money and effort in training that the doctors do. It can be argued Policemen have an easier job with pretty well defined uncertainties. Medical doctors have to diagnose with varying symptoms and treat a multitude of cases with different dimensions.

if Lagosians were really suffering or concerned we'd have seen picket lines and protests marching calling for an end to the strikes and targeted at both the doctors AND the state government. Sadly, the cowardice innate in most Nigerians keep them at home, whining bitterly as usual.

the imbecility of your post above is proven by the large number of Nigerian doctors thriving in the UK. Why would someone hire a doctor to be 'carrying trays'?
As for the Nigeria - UK comparison, there's nowhere i said they must be paid the same. I am suggesting that the nIgerian society should show a similar level of respect and understanding to these overworked, underpaid professionals. These people spend their lives working in a dangerous environment with myriad of infectious patients carrying innumerable diseases. They have to sit through rigorous working hours that usually amaze all visiting regulators. Only 788 state doctors to 17 million Lagosians and people like you see nothing wrong!

U don't even know me and u av d guts 2 tell me dat 'in my infinite imbecility'. Well,if my imbecility is infinite, then UR SANITY IS FINITE AND IT EXPIRED FEW SECONDS B4 U TYPED UR COMMENT.U must be an educated thug.Learn ow 2 conversate, debate and argue in a responsible manner.
To be honest, your words give away the lack of any reasonable processing power between your ears. I have seen no attempt to logically evaluate and analyze both sides of the argument before making an informed decision. All i see is the same regurgitated, stereotypical arguments that the lagos State government has been carefully feeding to halfwits like yourself...in a desperately egotistical bid to avoid shelling out peanuts to these doctors while they waste your tax money on frivolous things. Shamefully, you self-proclaimed intelligent folks swallow these lies hook, line and sinker.

Teachers in Lagos earn the same salary as their counterparts in the UK. Accountants in Lagos earn the same salary as accountants in the UK. A loaf of bread costs the same in the UK and Nigeria.

*sigh*
It's soooo hard attempting to reason with m0r0ns. Did you see any doctor asking for payment on par with their UK counterparts?

You posted an article that opined that doctors should not go on strike in the UK...the writer coming from the point of view that the doctors welfare is already pretty good. Can you say the same for Nigerian doctors?

While Fashola's goons go about lying that the doctors want to earn more than politicians, the article you posted indicates that average doctors earn more than members of the parliament in the UK!

You cannot use BBM over wifi without an active BIS subscription.

I used my BBM over wifi outside Nigeria earlier this year for 2 weeks, no issue. In that period, my mobile network was switched off. As soon as my BIS period expired back in Naija, the BBM over wifi stopped working. I had to call someone in Nigeria to buy me credit. After reloading and resubscribing, BBM came back over Wifi.

Bottom line? You NEED an active BIS subscription

Another Okija: When will you this yoruba boy learn some respect!! I would think coming from an ethnic group that specializes in rolling on the ground as a sign of respect you would be humble..

I talk my own, why dont you talk your own without attacking me!!
Yoruba?!
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Abeg i don't belong to any of the 'major' ethnic groups in Nigeria, and i certainly am not brainless enough to indulge in the kind of tribal intolerance you folks seem to thrive on.

As far as 'respect' is concerned, why should i respect someone who is clearly on the side of theft?
