In the 80s you will see some expatriates(Indians mainly) working in interior Federal Unis, Federal govt colleges, local industries, plastic industries, cement industries and their wives teaching in Secondary schools. Ghanaian a lot of them even claimed Nigeria and worked as teachers some even started naturalizing to Nigeria
If you see anyone relocating to Nigeria now, Not going to Politics and thinking of anywhere beside Lagos and environs you start wondering if they are okay
Ajaokuta in the 80s and 90s used to be like a foreign land filled with expatriates and Elite Nigerians (similar to Bonny Island now) not sure of the state of Ajaokuta currently
You will reach Okigwe, Ilaro, Offa Afikpo and meet one random man who graduated from Uni in UK and relocated to village to enjoy his life. If you mention Lagos to him, he will think you are trying to kill him with stress
People viewed Lagos then as a terrible place filled with zombies, criminals with unnecessary stress. Like as you dey enter Lagos within 5mins dem don snatch your bag, you have to catch a Molue moving at high speed, everywhere vehicle horns
Today the stress has quadrupled but the state of those hinterland has worsened exponentially that you will look insane not to join the Lagos madness at least relative safety and signs of sanity, civilization and economy still dey Hmmm...who was governor then? |

raumdeuter: The economic situations have changed significantly from what it used to be. Many of the states had a viable economy where many didnt see the need to travel to Lagos, there were many Private owned companies in the interior states where people worked and didnt have to bother with going to Lagos
It wasn't uncommon to enter one small town inside Nigeria and see people trained abroad working, small towns in Nigeria they had Rotary clubs where its mostly graduates some trained abroad who will sit there in the evening and networking
Nowadays almost everyone who has something to do in life, and not involved in politics would have moved away .
Places like Jos, Kaduna, Delta even had a significant non Nigerian population, Now everything na Lagos. That bros wey I dey learn Bini language for na him dey tell me recently, he was in Naija he dey lament how nothing dey Edo again an he was buy house for guess where? Lagos. The story is the same whether you are from Ondo, Enugu Delta
Under Tinubu was where the foundation for the good things in Lagos were laid, All those BRT, Lagos rail, Lekki Free Trade Zone, taming the Atlantic. All those were Tinubus ideas that his successors continued with
Chimaraoke said it, Tinubu was the starboy of his 1999 Governor generation, he had ideas for days while dem Chiboy Odili Mbadinuju Ibori Igbinedion, Fayose dem na how to empower thugs to dey kill opponents dey their mind
Actually someone said Tinubu has been the most impactful governor since this democracy started in 1999, We have had at least 4 different governors in all 36 states . That is at least 144 different governors How convenient, Tinubu is always the man to lay foundation, and never the man to build...every man should be judged on his merit and not on others'. Many would argue that whatever Fashola, Ambode and Sanwo-Olu did was in-spite of Tinubu (an overbearing godfather that could boot them out at will), and not necessarily because. Leave what politicians are saying for selfish interest and follow situation of things while they goverened. Anybody that listened to Akpabio yesterday would think Nigeria has become Singapore since Tinubu took over. Most of what you're saying is conjecture, and I'm inclined to agree with it even, but data doesn't show that Lagos' population is growing more than the rest of the country is on average...maybe if one drills into the data you'd be proven right, but the little one we can use (population growth rate) doesn't prove you right. |

Nowadays if you have a friend you believe is smart, graduated and says he is going to Osun, Abia Kogi after graduation, you will simply look at him like he has no ambition in life. If you are not fleeing the country at least go Lagos.
Of your uni mates, anyone not abroad most likely is in Lagos
Lagos might have agbero, taxation but many people still get hope of making it big there. Other states na Kidnapping, gunmen, Okada riders, rundown short time hotels and dilapidated buildings full there In terms of economic opportunities, Lagos remains number 1, and by far...can't say if that trend has changed so much from what it was several decades back really. And while people won't recommend Warri today, other cities have become viable since Warri...Asaba, Rivers, Ibadan, Abuja, Akwa-Ibom and to some extent Kaduna despite its insecurity challenges. Can't speak on what precise migration trends are, but assuming everyone is trooping to Lagos like you're saying, insecurity across the country would be factoring in more than for simply economic and infrastructural deficit reasons. So while economic reasons would always be Number 1, but very strong motivation these days is insecurity. Yea, the security situation didn't appear magically, and for a state of Lagos' population it's actually quite safe...Fashola and Sanwo-Olu made major strides in addressing the state's security challenges. |

Ibime: Abuja started from a population of nearly zero so it's obvious if you have a STEM brain that low denominator equals high percentage growth. Yobe will be those fleeing Borno
Lagos is outperforming handsomely on the 20m state number and very well even on the 17m, and most importantly, a good portion of migration is by economically empowered migrants, unlike Yobe that is absorbing Borno people that don't have 2 pennies So your STEM-powered brain doesn't tell you that a state that was one of the most populated in 1991 would maintinaing their rate of fvcking most likely have one of the highest population's in 2025? Kano that had a similar population to Lagos in 1991 experienced same average growth in that period, maybe we should go and erect a statue to worship its governors since 1999 like you're suggesting we do for Tinubu. I've shown that on average, and percentage wise, which was your original point, Lagos isn't out-performing the rest of the country. |

The State population is estimated at 20m, the City at 17m Put this prompt on ChatGPT and you'd see they're not outperforming like that...pretty much at par with Nigeria's average population growth. "Can I get a comparison of population of Nigerian states in 1991 and now in 2025....include percentage increase too. Amigoss: Even the Lagos don dey lose its population to Ogun State boundary communities,Ibadan(Oyo) and some dey relocate back to their village because of the harsh Tinubu economy, high rent and high cost of living in Lagos Yea, and it's a good thing, the state needs to push population outside the state, or work on a better spread. The population in Lagos is as much a burden as it is of benefit to the state, so I dunno why they keep complaining about the state's population when the guys handling the state haven't shown any real desire to push population outside the state. One would think that with their man at the centre there'd be deliberate efforts being made to push things outside Lagos, but it's looking like they're further concentrating things in the state. Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria They're simply outperforming and not performing the way you initially suggested, no be only Lagos population dey grow, and Nigeria's entire population can't be growing and Lagos would magically be insulated from that growth. Lagos is contributing its fair share, and not much more. |

All these in 8yrs of his good governance and building Osun and handling the blueprints of Osun to Aregbesola, oyetola and Jackson adeleke Tinubu is a good tax collector, I'd always give him that, but other than tax collection o, I don't see any major administrative kini that he has shown over the years. Nigeria's non-oil contribution to GDP would increase and I believe has increased owing to better tax collection, but the citizens aren't better off for it and that's my point. Tinubu as governor of Osun would have collected more tax from its citizens, but none of them here can say the state would have become a choice destination because of Tinubu. |

Ibime: What is 17.2m/5.2m
At least your STEM brain should tell you there are three 5s in 15 so there cannot be only two 5s in 17
Nigeria 229/89 is 2.6x vs Lagos 17.2/5.2 is 3.3x to be clear using official figures. I was using the oft cited 20m and I believe official figures for Lagos are untracked and underreported while Nigeria population is overinflated.
Good leadership is by maximising your competitive advantage and among all State Governors since 1999, none has grasped the concept of maximising his state advantage like Tinubu. Lagos advantage is it's international airport, it's port and it's headquartering of financial institutions. To maximise such an advantage requires clear tax and financial structures, security, business tourism and infrastructure where those financial institutions are located. He provided that and more such that there has been no bleed to Abuja like there was in the 1990s, rather Capital flight to Lagos from all corners of Nigeria and abroad. This is someone who has studied economics and financial management and enacted strategies to make his state the go to destination for capital, while your typical Nigerian Governor was setting up "structure" to include suppression, assassination squads, persecution of rivals and seizing of property to make their states unattractive to capital. If Tinubu was typical, Lagos will stay contributing 10% of GDP like it was in the 1990s, not 35% you find it now.
Using your core advantages requires foresight. Dubai and Qatar are not stupid to focus on airlines and tourism. They are strategically located exactly halfway between two trading behemoths, Europe and East Asia and their strategy is centred around people needing to break up the journey between those destinations. In some cases, planes cannot fly direct without stopping and they are a perfect stopping point, and from there they extended the packages to tourism and financial services. That is vision which none of their neighbours were able to grasp. Saudi is only trying to grasp it now. Saddam was too busy fighting with his oil wealth when Dubai were building out their strategy, same way your state Governor was deploying militants and fighting opps when Tinubu was building out.
What is your state competitive advantage and how did your Governor capitalise on it. Let's take Onitsha as a market town with Obi, or Rivers State and Delta States with their oil facilities. Did Odili cut out a portion of Rivers State for oil coys to headquarter or was he busy arming Ateke to finish his opps and adding to the insecurity that drobe them to Lagos? You said Lagos's population has quadrupled since 1991, implying a 400% population growth, using your STEM brain only, how did you arrive at that number? And is Lagos the only state that has enjoyed that sort of percentage growth? |

BlueRayDick: The article even corroborates what Elder said in his post. Elder claimed there was already infrastructures and national presence in Lagos before Tinubu's tenure .
The article says Lagos was orderly until 1990s when the town planners left for Abuja. The article further pointed out that the 1970s oil boom under the military government affected Lagos positively in the sense that major infrastructures like Eko bridge and Third mainland bridge was built while the already existing carter bridge was re-built, among others. The article only blamed the military governments between 1970s to the late 1990s for lack of planning.
The same article still blamed the current democratic government for making Lagos to remain deplorable, rowdy, unsanitary, and a city of the urban poor.

Ibime: Lagos population has quadrupled since FCT was moved to Abuja. Nigeria population by comparison has only 2.5x. Una dey rush am.
Lagos contributed 10% of Nigerias GDP in 1991 when FCT was moved to Abuja, today it contributes 35%. So clearly the acceleration in growth has been outside the ambit of FCT designation.
Tinubu was only the start of Government. FASH. Ambode and Sanwo are his continuum along the system he created. When Tinubu was building an economy, your principal was buying share in beer factory that's why Anambrarians are running to Lagos today.
There is no comparison in performance. Lagos stands alone as the only State that can function independently and is a net contributor to Federal Government coffers, one of the reasons all your useless State Governors were mad at VAT remittance changes recently.
In 1980s and 1990s, the whole of Lekki was swamp, today they built it out so you can bring money from your useless states to come and live and grow their economy. In 1990s we used to fear going to Lagos but had to out of necessity as it was the only Southern Airport that flew out of Nigeria. They always warn us then to go straight to airport to avoid agberos that Lagos is teeming with agberos. When we arrive Lagos, we dare not even go buy Suya without being accosted. All those agberos were turned into productive citizens in a tax collection system while states with much fewer agberos in the 1990s saw their bad boys turn into militants, kidnappers and bandits. That is vision. According to Wikipedia, Lagos' population in 1991 was 5.2M persons, and in 2025 it is 17.2M persons, that's like 2.3X population growth and not the 4X you allege...Lagos' population is not growing any more than Nigeria's average population, and I'd harangue a guess that there'd be at least 10 states that have since 1991 experienced a larger percentage growth in population than Lagos. My point remains, how was Lagos pre-Tinubu, and how was Lagos at the end of Tinubu's tenure, leave how other governors performed and critique Tinubu on his role as administrator while he governed. Lagos was independently administered by the Colonial masters before almagamation, which implies that way before Tinubu, it's a region that could have managed its affairs independently. If Tinubu was governor of Osun State, and not Lagos, can you beat your chest and say Osun state would have today become a destination of choice in Nigeria? Big cities are big cities and they'd always be choice destinations...the governors of New York and California would always execute the biggest projects, doesn't necessarily mean they're pound-for-pound the best administrators. Tinubu is president of Nigeria today, how has he fared? |

For 20m in that small space, they are trying.
Most importantly, they have built a sustainable economy and revenue streams that can feed one million people well. The ambition to be part of that 1 million is why the other 19 million people are there. They come from States that can only feed 50,000 people well. Excuses. People were migrating to Lagos before Tinubu even thought to take night bus there. I simply stated that since 1999, Tinubu is arguably the worst governor in Lagos' history, and he ran the worst version of the city and did so right till the end of his tenure. |

Atiku is closer to where he's going to than where he's coming from; politicians know this, and they'd make calculations having that in mind, looking to make bets that guarantee the present (Tinubu), or the present/future (Obi). It doesn't help Atiku that he's faced with a vicious foe in the person of Tinubu who's determined to strip him of his political structure...for a politician that's relied primarily on structure and not personal charisma to navigate the political scence, that's a huge blow. Atiku and his fans have the odds stacked against them, and they'd do well to come into any negotiation from a place of humility and not arrogance. Guilt-tripping won't work either, the time for that was 2023 and Peter Obi's votes (INEC released) show he ain't Atiku's little nigga no more ...people are ready and will take their chance with Obi alone going into 2027.
