Much traffic , makes the trip longer, it causes car breakdowns due to things like over heating, exorbitant cost of car repairs will add to costs ,much traffic wears the road down faster and damages it, which damages more cars and makes the journey even longer.

The use of the phrase “ going the extra mile” was in the context of “adding value” beyond your “job description”. Doing just what is expected of one is ordinary, doing extra by adding value is what makes one extra-ordinary.
