I went to court to contest my parking ticket because i was broke aMJnd couldn't afford it. I was ignorant on the law of opposite side parking. The white Judge was very sweet and nice to me. She listened to evrrything o said but ignorance wasn't an excuse. I paid the fine despite all my begging.

Today, anywhere i park i double check to make sure i am not breaking any law. It is the principle of law and punishment. It results in positive order of things.

That is what differentiates us from oyibo.

It is not your $1 as you change at your BDC but economic prices. The poverty head count line is US$1 for extreme poverty and US$2 for poverty a day in PPP all in 1985 prices. It is not the currency but the basket of goods that amount will buy. The PPP $1 a day standard denotes not what a US dollar can actually buy in Nigeria but what a US dollar will buy in the US in 1985.

Given Nigeria's double digits inflation rate and the less than 4% US rate over these period, it may interest you to know that US$ 1 ppp can even be at about N1300 today.

So please understand the standard and what is being measured before you criticise.

Aigipan: You should know that the $1 a day analysis is based of the fact that household income in most African countries are unverifiable and records are not kept. many economist are aware and dont base their projection on the $1 a day theory. so telling us that Nigeria has 100 billion subscribers doesnt change a thing. (Nigeria economic projections are not calculated with the a dollar a day theory. it is used in political and other non- financial terms mostly these days)

Nigeria has a lot of poor people. THAT IS A FACT! we would never know the real numbers if we dont work on our data management and tax calculations thou. its easy to evade taxes in Nigeria. beating up revenue officers is one of those ways

Genius100: No one is exonerating Oshiomole for saying "Go and die". He was wrong for that, end of story. But Nigeria is a banana republic not just because Nigerians do not obey the law but because they get away with it. The culture of impunity is a major reason why the most populous Black Country in the world remains a laughing stock. People should obey the law, simple and short and Oshiomole should be more sensitive with his words.

chaircover: Coogar there are so many like her. I am sure all the things they seized from that woman is probably not up to N5k but that was most probably her livelihood. I was told that N2500 can feed a widow in the village for a month; It puts so much into perspective doesn't it?

pmc01: I know many will disagree with my stand, but I still make bold to state my view to the matter.

While the Governor be scolded for letting his emotions get the better of him, it is really provoking that someone comes up with the cheap excuse of 'being a poor widow' to do what is wrong. It is obvious the woman was fully aware of the wrong she was engaged in, hence the struggle to bail herself out with an emotional excuse of being a struggling widow.

The woman was not willing to accept responsibility for her actions, and that might have really gotten on the nerves of the Governor (he is human too). From comments read, some people have attested to the man's humility and all that, so it is only fair to give him the excuse that he was really provoked. Of course, it is obvious he meant the statement figuratively (even though it seems he went too far than expected of him).

I also wish to state here that we should put a hold on our emotions and judge this matter rationally. It is normal that anyone guilty of a crime would seek to exonerate himself/herself, but does that justify the crime? There are many poor widows all over (assuming she is truly a widow) that do not stay on the wrong side of the law and give room to this kind of embarrassing scenario, so what is the fuss about? Every offender could claim to be a widow, widower, orphan, e.t.c., should they all then be pitied and the society allowed to become chaotic?

Fact is the Governor was harsh, but the woman gave room for that. She was simply trying to blackmail the Governor into setting a bad precedence and the man had to take a firm and resolute decision, having in mind that the people he employed to enforce the law were watching to see whether he will compromise or not. She should just have admitted her fault and plead for mercy, rather than play the emotional card. The truth is everyone in that state will now be on their toes and be more inclined to obey the law strictly, to avoid been a 'scape-goat'. We know how Nigerians have to be 'forced' to do what's right.

It is sad that indiscipline has become a way of life for us here and so many supposedly enlightened ones here have decided to approach this matter with emotional sentiments, rather than an objective outlook.

What is wrong is wrong, widow or no widow!

I am sure he got assistant or minister who can take charge of these raps. President represent whole Nigeria not to be caught up in this kind of scandal? I will go for Buhari/Fashola any day. Buhari majority of the North if they can get the Northern elites to back it. While the SW will back Fashola. With a little from MB, SS and SE - it is a landslide.

The SE can be given the Senate and SS a top slot too. It is possible to pull this off.
