CodeTemplar:Some experts were putting annual funding per student at N600000 a few ywars ago.(Chief Afe Babalola put it even higher). Also, I doubt most universites even see that N450000. (Oil prices have been fluctuating since 2014, and have been under $100 since 2015). In my opinion (and this is my personal opinion mind)...we even need much higher funds than that. 430000 naira is about 1300 us dollars. Some colleges/unis in the US have fees three times that.(sorry to bring in USA...but that is what somepeople have in mind when they talk improved facilties) |
Chukwuka16:You make goodpoints....until we come to the realisation that the reason why we cannot dogood research...publish good papers is THE SAME FUNDING. Especially in STEM courses. Many Nigerian unis don't have well equiped lab facilities. So, how can someone do worldbeating research? And attract funding as a result ? Some research involves travelling..and you expect unviersities that are having diffiuclty meeting overheads to adequately fund research travelling? Doesn't mean you made a bad argument though...I agree with your points. |
writeprof:Read the ASUU/FG 2009 agreement Then, it was saying that we need at least N1.5 trillion every year in extra funding to make things work fully. There is looting yes...but the thing is, we also don't have enough money. Even if we collected all the loot back...we still have a lot of things to fund (like Power which needs N5trillion alone...twenty years ago, railways which need to be expanded, and primary and secondary schools too...and a lot ofother things.). PLUS we are not earning enough from oil . If we want to earn enough fromoil...our break even price is $140 per barrel...not this $70 we are jumping up and down about (That is when resource control starts making sense...if each and every region decides to becomeproductive. Sadly tribalism has messed up the argument) As for universites having independent power plants.....those cost millions of dollars to build. Averageuniversity that does not get up to N500million in ayear...most of which goes for salaries. Even big universites like ABU that have overheads of N600millionper annum get only N120million |
CodeTemplar:1. Private university fees range from 500000-1.2million naira annually. 2.ASUU/FG agreement put funding per student at 300000 annually. That was in 2009 and that was supposed to be part of the 3trillion naira over 2 years in extra funding that was promised.... And that never got. Paid 3.I agree with you about the mismanagement. What makes it painful is that it is a tiny fund they are mismanaging |
shanequeen:The ASUU FG agremeent states that universites need N1.5 trillion to be adequately funded. In reality, we spend less than N700bn yearly on education (that's all the sectors, primary, secondary and tertiaty). Recently ABU's VC stated that his overhead costs per month are N50million. That's 600million yearly. He gets N120million yearly from the govt for overheads. You expect him to perform on just 1/4 tank? |
Nigeria is going out today. Let's be frank...anyone who thinks Nigeria would win this game is on a long thing. Our football setup is in a mess. We don't have agood enough youth system, clubs are chornically underfunded, overged youth players game the system for years, and then flop in the senior team, and we don't have enough good coaches, and what not. I'm sorry....but we would lose by 2-0 to Iceland. Because if we beat Iceland, and beat Argentina and qualify, we will decieve ourselves that things are good...and we won't sit down and make the encessary reforms needed to be world beaters. Wake up Nigeria. |
adioolayi:ASUU/FG agreement in 2009 stated that foruniversites to be adequately funded we need to spent at least N1.5trillion yearly on JUST UNIVERSITES....note...JUST UNIVERSITES. And the thing is, that money has not been paid since 2009...and the previous admin flat out told ASUU in 2013 that they could not pay the money. Meanwhile, fees are kept low...because poverty. The thing is, we need an education budget of at least N5 trillion yearly to make sure we have enough cash to fund universites. Our budget has never passed N10 trillion. Even NationalAssembly, the greedy fellows, spend N1trillion yearly. |
The problem is MONEY He said it was pathetic that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) established by the Federal Government to fund tertiary institutions, could only give financial support to a few universities, while others were made to develop at slow pace. And there it is....the cash is not there. Meanwhile,we insist on paying N40000 for degrees that should cost N600000 at least yearly. And Govt does not have the trillions...not billions...needed to fund universites. Also 50 per cent of the institutions in Nigeria complained about epileptic power supply. Many of them rely on alternative power supply such as generators. This has resulted in increased cost of running the institutions.“About 37.5 per cent of the institutions perceived lack of support from the government through TETFund as a major setback in financing the development of infrastructure and they also complained of multiple-taxation.” And weneed $300bn to fix power. Our reserves are at $40billion. Do the math. Either we raise taxes, fees and whatnot...or we just close our eyes and take another LOAN....that our grandkids will still be paying. |
Croatia has scored.Oh Nigeria |
Don't think we will win this match though. Sorry, but we need to fix our football structure at home first |

OK....time for a lesson 1.The gene for albinisim is what is called a 'recessive' gene...meaning it only manifests when both sperm and ova have the gene. 2.Because it is recessive, it could be passed down for several generations without manifesting in the family. 3.What I suspect happened...both Mike and his wife carry the gene. Because of 'luck' the gene has not been manifesting in their family...till now. 4.I think the problem in their marriage goes way beyond an albino kid. 5.Albinos have a lot of health issues...skin cancer is the worst of the lot.So...hence the gra gra. |
handsomeclouds:And whose fault is that? Not the govt...or Buhari. Nigerians love being on the winning team. If they are not there, they port there immediately. Opposiiton politcs we don't do...we defect to the ruling party...and defect again when times change. |
This is a poll that is limited in the sense that it covers a small segment of the educated...it does not go out into the villages/rural areas, and only lasted for 14 days. Though the thing is...APC wont do well in 2019...problem is, where is the opposition.? We just have a rehash of the old..and no new guys ,except Sowore who many won't support because...bitterness.... I won;t be voting for APC...but I won't be voting for PDP either. Kowa or NCP for me until Nigerians start voting based on actual ideas, and not tribe. |
SamuelAnyawu:That is the problem with an online poll... Better one does a sample from each of the states....to get a better view. |
eezeribe:Get married, get your wife pregnant, then you will understand... ![]() Also consider the fact that some people marry, and pikin no come immediately...but when demdey come... |

Bale is a good buy, but injures...lots of injuries. |
yeyerolling:Communism is ten times worse. Your right to believe in whatever you want to believe in would be determined by the State. Your business, whether big man or small scale would be taken over by the government. Your property will belong to the state. If comminisim worked so well, why isn't Russia, Poland, Romania practicing it anymore. (China has a communist govt which allows unrestrained capitalistic behavior) Communism was tried in Africa too. Failed drastically.ask Ethiopia, Benin and Angola |
Sad. Leukemia is a deadly disease, especially Acute Myeloid Leukemia. |
MrBigiman:Thanks. Much appreciated, especially considering that I am not a police officer, have also had my issues with the police too, and by the way, grow up. |
You know, this is not to excuse police brutality at all... But I am getting a bit tired of stories of 'police brutalise x',complete with pictures, which basically includes a story of how X was beaten up by the police...with no context or addition to the story Thing is, sometimes, people deliberately assault police officers. Then when the police retaliate, they then claim brutality. Also, some of the stories of 'innocent people die' may be tales of criminals who came off the wrong end of a police attack...and died. I think that the problem is, Nigeria has a bad relationship with its policemen. The Nigeria Police is descended from the old colonial forces that were made up of emancipated slaves....outsiders, who were used to enforce colonial rule, breeding resentment...and of course, breeding a cycle of retaliation and attack. In one of the pictures, the woman is shown holding the policeman. That is assault of a policeman, which is a criminal offence. (I once got into an argument with a policeman. I did not lay an arm or finger on the guy...and neither did he...and as a result...situation resolved smoothly). We can call the police Zoologic police, zombies,etc....but a situation where people do not follow the rules...I have been stopped by the police...SARS inclusive...asked for my car papers...and once I present my intact papers...I go on my way. Simple....and also when people don't follow the laws, and assault and attack policemen...hmmm... We need mentality change...we Nigerians. |

Owomkpo:Please, this joke is getting stale. We know you don't like bihari, but blaming him for bad commentary on a match is like you think he is a god that can do or undo. |

Lala la lala lala lala lala lala lala lala lala lala... Food don ready! |
nkul:1. Let me correct a misunderstanding you have. What Buhari did in 2016 was not deregulation, but partialprice increase.....due to the fact that the import costs of fuel had gone up to N130 per liter...and fuel was still being sold at N87 2.Deregulation would have involved Buhari essentially telling marketers that they can set any price they want for fuel....government won't intervene...so in theory a marketer could sell fuel for N200 while his neighbour can sell for N300...and no one wouldbother. 3.The GSM was deregulated from the word go. Goverment allowed MTN and ECONET(now AIRTEL), later globacom and etisalat (now 9 mobile) set their prices without government interference. Back then that meant SIM cards could cost as much as N10000 (2001-3 ). By 2005/6...SIM cards cost N400 and less...due to increased investment, lots of money flowing in since companies could makeprofits, and new investors coming in... 4.Now if Govt allows complete deregulation as regards petrol....no more 'Fuel is N145'.....sure prices will shoot up. Sure costs will go up...but as money flows in,more investors will come in, there would be funds for refinereis, new support infrastructure...and eventually....prcies come down. |
LaudableXX:Problem is, for how long? Plus, it does not strike me as good business practice when government dictates your profits, which is what subsidy does. Plus, subsidy scams happen because people are importing and selling at a loss. If we deregulate, prices will go up, but there would be money to fix pipelines, invest in new refineries and so on. Rather than pour money down a big hole in the name of subsidy, money that could have been spent on things like....railways. Anyway, we need oil at 140 dollars according to Fitch to balance our books. Oil is at seventy now. Where is the money to keep paying subsides coming from? (More loans, no doubt) |

I know of couple of lecturers that divert such grants for their personal use, instead of using it for the research they proposed. at the end, they cookup false claims.
15 million Northerners that believe in PMB as their demi god are not on facebook and twitter ooooh
Diesel was deregulated a few years back, but has the price fallen?
