HealthHow First Cardiology Consultants Treat Covid-19 Patients In Lagos by TheophilusA(op): 9:23pm On Aug 08, 2020
SARS-CoV-2 is a virus that scientists have never seen before. The number of people infected and killed by the disease has continued to change every day. In Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as of the 7th of August 2020, 45687 cases have been confirmed, 32637 cases have been discharged and 936 deaths have been recorded. First Cardiology Consultants in Ikoyi, Lagos has become the hospital of choice for Nigeria’s high and mighty seeking Covid-19 treatment.

How is First Cardiology Consultants managing COVID-19 treatment? Below is a statement on the hospital’s website published in April 2020 on how patients are being treated:

We can confirm that we have been approved for COVID-19 ICU care. We have been getting ready for this for over 3 months when we saw what was happening elsewhere. We decided early to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. So we embarked on some construction work to make it safe for our staff and patients with workflow redesign, installation of air filtration/purification systems etc. There was a lot of IPC training ( Infection Prevention Control) for all our staff. It is very important that our staff and patients are always protected. In the U.K., there are 6 patients to one nurse and probably one doctor to about 20.

We have 1 nurse per patient, one mid-level doctor for a max of 3 patients 3 senior consultants for a 5 bed ICU. It is rather complicated to have an ICU outside the hospital setting. It is not just ventilators. Once you are on a ventilator it means you are on life support the management of which is very complicated and takes years of training. The 5-10% of cases that require regular ICU care are some of the most complicated patients most of us will ever see. It is not just the lungs.

It causes multi-system damage that requires multiple specialists. (Critical care, pulmonary, cardiology, nephrology, radiology). There are daily updates from around the world from all the specialists taking care of these patients. We have set up telemedicine in the ICU so the number of people in the ICU is kept to the barest minimum, that way we reduce exposure to the clinical personnel. It is also used to communicate and share ideas with our colleagues around the world.

More importantly, the COVID-19 ICU that is exclusively reserved for critically ill patients is separated from the rest of the hospital. Any patient who is admitted into the ICU will enter directly through a separate entrance without any contact with the rest of the hospital. The rest of the hospital is in addition, further protected by screening all patients before entry. And if there is any suspicion at all, the patients are sent to IDH to be tested. All staff are screened at least twice daily. As always, we hope for the best but prepare for the worst.”

Politics‘Nigeria Moving Away From Corruption To Production’ – Rotimi Amaechi by TheophilusA(op): 2:41am On Aug 31, 2016
The Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, yesterday, said the Federal Government has concluded plans to award the contract for the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan railway project. Amaechi made this disclosure at the 1-year memorial lecture in honour of former General Secretary of Alliance for Credible Election, ACE-Nigeria, late Comrade Emma Ezeazu, in Abuja. The former governor of Rivers State, explained that, “The President’s agenda is not just to recover loots. We are recovering as much as we can. But the president is determined to create employment. That is why you can see his focus. In transportation, from Kaduna to Abuja, we have created over 700 workforce. What did I do? I said all the villages or those communities along the route; I said they should give them level six down."

Speaking further, Amaechi said, “Their job is to march on that railway from the beginning to the end to see there was no security breach. The rest of the applicants will go online to apply for the jobs. They said if we publish it, people will die the way it happened during immigration recruitment exercise and they will say Amaechi should resign. This year, we will start the Lagos-Ibadan, railway project. You know the difference between us and the rest, we will not say ‘go and start’, we will look for counterpart funding.” On how the project will be funded, he said, “We will bring our counterpart fund as poor as the country is now and give to the Chinese because their money is already in their bank account. It is for us to bring our own. If we bring our own, they bring their own to make sure there is no delay, we will bring all our own to give them and say ‘go and start work. If that happened in two years, the Lagos-Ibadan will be ready. Tomorrow, I will sign the contracts for Calabar-Port Harcourt railway project. Before the week runs out, I will sign Kano-Kaduna. That is what we are doing. This is to show you that we are moving away from the corruption economy to production economy.”

PoliticsOndo 2016: ‘Bola Tinubu Prefers Me But I Wasn’t Imposed’ – Segun Abraham by TheophilusA(op): 5:02pm On Aug 28, 2016
A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Ondo State, Dr. Segun Abraham, has dismissed reports that the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is imposing him on the party. Abraham was reported to have been imposed on the party by Tinubu as the candidate of the APC at the November 26 governorship election in the state. Speaking on Adaba FM, Akure, on Saturday, Abraham said, “The national leader was accused of imposing me on the party; I was not imposed – endorsement is different from imposition. Those who regard the two as the same do not know what they are saying. The national leader only said I am a preferred aspirant that could deliver the state for the APC in the coming election. There will be a primary and delegates know who they will vote for and who can win election for the party. I have met the delegates and they have assured me that they are for me. If we hold the primary today, I shall have nothing less than 85 per cent of their votes.”

PoliticsWe Want You Back Now, APC Tells Nuhu Ribadu by TheophilusA(op): 2:09am On Jul 20, 2016
The Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has joined the race of groups and individuals calling on a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, to return to the party.

Mr. Ribadu is one of the founding leaders of the party, but left for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, shortly before the 2015 general elections.

Mr. Ribadu was the PDP candidate for governor in Adamawa State in 2015. He left the APC after the impeachment of former Governor Murtala Nyako by the State House of Assembly in 2014.
Sources close to the anti-corruption Czar said he was ” deeply disappointed by the inability of the APC leadership to save Mr Nyako from impeachment.”

In a letter to Mr. Ribadu, signed by the acting secretary of the APC in Adamawa State, Saidu Naira, the ruling party said it was time for Mr. Ribadu to return to his “home party”.

The letter, dated, June, 22, 2016, reads in part:
“Given your track records and progressives nature, we strongly belief APC is where you belong to.
“We are also mindful of the efforts and contributions you made during the merger without which the merger would have been difficult.

“To this end we reaffirm our request for you to come home to APC and assist and contribute to the success of the APC government both at state and national level”.

Efforts to reach Mr. Ribadu or his spokesperson, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, were unsuccessful.
PREMIUM TIMES however gathered that the request from the APC is coming at a time the former presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria is under pressure from his present party, the PDP, to serve as national chairman to ” reorganise the PDP as it readies itself to reclaim power in 2019″.

PoliticsPresident Buhari: 'Why I Respect Goodluck Jonathan' by TheophilusA(op): 12:36am On May 31, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari has said he was shocked that former President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat so easily after the March 2015 presidential election. Speaking while hosting State House correspondents to a lunch at the Presidential Villa, Abuja as part of activities marking his one year in office, Buhari said, “This is where I pay my respect to former President Goodluck Jonathan. This is actually privileged information for you. He called me at a quarter past five in the evening. He said, ‘Good evening Your Excellency Sir’ and I said, ‘Good evening.’ He said, ‘I have called to congratulate you that I have conceded defeat.’ Of course there was a dead silence on my end because I did not expect it. I was shocked. I did not expect it because after 16 years, the man was a deputy governor, governor, Vice-President and was President for six years. For him to have conceded defeat even before the result was announced by INEC, I think it was quite generous and gracious of him. Gen. Abdulsalami recognised the generosity of Jonathan to concede defeat and said we should go and thank him immediately and that was the first time I came here.”

Since the investigation into the $2.1billion arms deal blew open, big shots in government during the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration are being interrogated. The arrowhead of this scandal is the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki(retd.) who has been in detention since December 2015. Though the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has said Goodluck Jonathan can only be summoned on President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive, there are indications that Jonathan may be invited by the anti-graft agency. A chieftain of the People's Democratic Party and former minister of aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode raised the alarm earlier today via his Twitter account that, "The greatest blunder and strategic error that the Buhari government can ever make is to arrest Goodluck Jonathan(@GEJonathan) for no just cause. Mark it."

Former president Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated businessman Patrice Talon who won Benin Republic's presidential election and will succeed outgoing President Boni Yayi. Jonathan has also hailed the incumbent Prime Minister of the Republic of Benin, Mr. Lionel Zinsou, who was a candidate for President, "for his exemplary conduct of conceding defeat and congratulating the choice of the people". In a personally-signed statement Jonathan shared via his verified Facebook page, he said," Having followed the elections in the Republic of Benin very closely, I am very impressed with the orderly manner with which the administration of President Boni Yayi conducted those polls. They were adjudged peaceful, credible and transparent by local and international observers and President Yayi deserves commendation for providing the leadership that led to this outcome.

"I also congratulate the people of the Republic of Benin for their role in the election and for showing the world that the Republic of Benin and its citizens have come of age in the practice of democracy. I especially wish to appreciate the incumbent Prime Minister of the Republic of Benin, Mr. Lionel Zinsou, who was a candidate for President, for his exemplary conduct of conceding defeat and congratulating the choice of the people, Mr. Patrice Talon, on his victory at the polls. Such a gesture by Prime Minister Zinsou is rare and should be applauded by all statesmen as the highest display of patriotism and maturity. Finally, I congratulate Mr. Patrice Talon on his victory and wish him a successful and peaceful tenure after his swearing in even as I urge that there should be no victor or vanquished in this process. All the Beninoise people are winners and have cause to be proud of their nation."

Come Sunday, 10th April 2016, former Ogun State governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel will turn 60. OGD as he is popularly called by political associates will be throwing a big party at the Grand Ball Room of Oriental Hotel, Lekki in Lagos on that Sunday. What has changed about Otunba Gbenga Daniel, he was asked in a recent interview ahead of his 60th birthday. OGD said,"A lot. Age has mellowed me. At 60 I have now joined the Elders Club and I am tired of fighting. I have given up on fighting anybody. The battle is over.I have forgiven all those who offended me. I have also begged all those I have offended.

"Politics is not a do-or-die affair. I have had my own fair share of service to the people. I have been governor of a state for 8 years. My predecessor has come to build on the foundation we laid. We knew what Ogun State was like when we came in and how we left it. I must give thanks to God. A few years ago, we lost so many people at age 40. Aboderin died. We have had quite a number of people who didn’t live up to 60. But these days some make it up to 70 and they are still looking strong. I saw Chief Ayo Adebanjo the other day, waxing strong on TV. This is a man who is close to 90 for God sake. I think we must give thanks to God for His mercies. For me, I was shocked. I didn’t know I was just going to be 60. Just like that, here I am. It is just beginning to occur to me that maybe I am now an elder. I am joining the club of the elders.”

A Federal Government delegation, comprising of the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami; Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu and crack detectives from the anti-graft agency, yesterday, started comparing collated intelligence notes with their United Arab Emirates(UAE) counterparts on some Nigerian former Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs). This move is ahead of the repatriation of over $200billion stashed away by 7 former governors, 6 former ministers, a fleeing ex-presidential aide in form of cash and/or acquired properties in the UAE.

Implicated in this UAE loot saga are some of the aforementioned former public officers and about 5 chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) who have fat accounts in UAE and choice properties in Marina (Dubai), Bur Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. To this end, some mansions belonging to the former PEPs and their cronies or fronts may also be seized by the EFCC officials who arrived Dubai on Saturday. The Nigerian delegation went to UAE in line with an agreement with the Federal Government. Former governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, has formally dumped Labour Party, the platform he ran on in the 2015 governorship election, for ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking with newsmen on Friday in Abuja when he visited the national Secretariat of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alao-Akala said he is now a member of APC. In his words, "I’m at the national headquarters of my party, maybe, you don’t know that I’m in the APC. This is just to tell you that I’m a member of the APC. So, I have come to the national headquarters of my party to have a tete-a-tete with my leaders and the national chairman of the party, including my leaders from the South-West in the party structures.

"That is what I have come here to do.The change agenda has already started. It has not been the business as usual. Things have started changing. I know it’s purely for good purpose by the grace of God. When you are just coming on board, you will have challenges here and there. But sooner or later, you will get over them." Alao-Akala further said, "I pitied the governors because of what they are going through now. I wouldn’t have been able to sleep with these dwindling monthly allocations. That was the reason I said that. I don’t know how I would have coped. It doesn’t go beyond that."

Health'We Perform Surgeries With Torchlights&Lamps In Univ. Teaching Hospital'-Doctors by TheophilusA(op): 3:17am On Mar 18, 2016
Following the ongoing nationwide strike of doctors, the immediate past president of the Association of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital(UITH) branch, Dr. Oyinlola Oluwagbemiga and his successor, Dr. Ade Faponle, on Wednesday said that due to epileptic power supply in the hospital, doctors use lamps, torchlight and phone lights to treat patients. Oluwagbemiga and Faponle spoke during a media briefing in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital. According to Oluwagbemiga, “There are certain procedures we embark upon, you have to complete them using your torchlight or phone lights. Imagine that you are in an emergency where you have to resuscitate a patient and you resort to that. It is that bad. It even stretches to sanitation. We have reached the point where you are having a major procedure and all you can hear is ‘please we can only supply light for the next two hours, make sure you complete your operation.’ And there are operations that last for four or more hours. So if you have such, you have to reschedule because you have been told ab-initio that you are on your own should you embark on such.”

The Director of Administration, UITH, Mr. Ganiyu Yusuf however said the management of the hospital spent about N16m monthly on diesel and N3m monthly on electricity bill to the Ibadan Distribution Electricity Company. Yusuf said, “As management, we are not going to join issues with the resident doctors. But we are going to state the facts. It is not news that electricity generation in the country is bad. The problem affects everybody, not only the hospital. We spend N16m monthly to buy diesel. We have a 500KV generator and another 350kv generator, as well as many other smaller generators to power each unit and department. The N16m that we pay is different from the N3m that we pay to IBEDC every month. Imagine what N19m could have done, if we had steady power supply in the country. We have done what we could do as a management with the resources available. We have separate generators for many sections. If you turn on the light in the hospital because of the operations the doctors will do, we keep it running until 4pm. Even when the power is on, how many of the doctors are ready to perform surgeries? If we know that in our area power will come at a certain time, you programme your activities. We lost three people in an attempt to stabilise the power supply. One of them was electrocuted and another dropped in water.
