Yeah I have to agree with @Fhemmmy. My mom once took lots of gala to the US and it was all thrown right into the trash at the airport. A sad day it was . Canada and US have similar rules when it comes to what they allow at the airport. But it is true that you can sometimes get away with it with a lackadaisical customs officer or if you conceal it which I generally don't recommend especially as a first time traveler to said country. But you can try your luck sha and if they randomly search your bag and find it you could feign ignorance lol.TheBae: Fhemmmy: |
FYI, make sure you only select programs that are either "graduate certificate" or "post-graduate diploma" if you don't want difficulty convincing the VO for a visa. Per Durham College, I don't know for sure. FYI, I don't live in Canada though I've visited twice in the past. What I know from extensive reading (I'm doing research for my sister who is applying for a Canada study TRV) is that Ontario is the least easy province for PR. Durham College is in Ontario... if your goal is ease to PR then I'd recommend other provinces. But I will defer to the ogas in Canada like @Fhemmmy to address this question. adNEXT: |
You are welcome. Both MUN and UAlberta have your program of interest. Use this link to search for schools. lordjayabs: |
You are welcome. It depends on your definition of affordable. In any case, see this pdf file for a comprehensive list of all post-secondary and PGD programs in Canadian colleges. Look through the pdf for all the schools that offer your course, then go to each website and see their annual tuition costs. @richcasey, please could you add this pdf link to your list? it would be helpful to all prospective PGD applicants moving forward. @adNEXT, universities also offer few PGDs and you can search for those here. adNEXT: |
If you are planning on going for your masters in January, you need to move very fast and apply already! Given that most schools take 6-12 weeks to decide on applications I think it will be tough and near-impossible to apply for a visa (average 8 weeks processing time) on time and meet the resumption date. I recommend you adjust your plans and apply for September 2016 instead. Btw, if your goal is to go to a school with lots of Nigerians then you already know where there is likely to be the highest density of Nigerians: Toronto and Ontario in general; also, from this thread it seems many students go to Memorial University of Newfoundland as well as USaskatchewan and UAlberta. But I would advise that you not limit yourself and the chips will eventually fall into place. What is your course? lordjayabs: |
@adNEXT, in most provinces PGD and masters have similar advantages for immigration purposes. Ontario is heavily populated with new immigrants and as such may be slightly different, yet a PGD still doesn't stop your PR eligibility in that province. If you want detailed info about PR eligibility after school, you might have to Google each province's PR programs or bring up the question in this thread. MichaelFinn: |
Why not apply to a masters degree since you already have a 2:1? Hope your decision to apply to a PGD is not because it is an easier application? (PGDs are good if you want a very practical-oriented education though ... But I would argue you should try for a masters since you have the grades for it.)adNEXT: |
Google is your friend. Just type in the phrase "tax rates in Canada" and the first link has your answer. Please lets endeavour to use this forum primarily for questions that can't be answered in 15 seconds using Google. Cheers. One thing to keep in mind: your total tax is the Federal Tax Rate plus the Province Tax Rate. badtsharpguy: |
@ElCapt, thanks for the response. |
Congrats on your admission to the diploma program (post-graduate abi?). Yes it is possible to go with your two kids, but imho I think it will be difficult to convince the VO though not impossible by any stretch. @Team12 is a testament that you can get your TRV even if you apply with your child -- I bet she has tips that can help in preparing your application. Here are my thoughts: If I were the VO, it would be difficult (but not impossible) for you to convince me that your primary intent is not to immigrate with your kids. Let's think about the following concerns that this "pretend VO" (me) has: 1. If her primarily motivation is to study (not immigrate permanently), why is she going with both of her kids? Couldn't she leave one or both with her husband and family in Nigeria? I hope you will sufficiently address this in your SOP. 2. How will she be able to focus on her studies with two kids given that she has no close family member or husband with her to help? One way you could convince me (as "pretend VO" ) about this question is if in your SOP you discuss your precise plans of addressing this. Example plans are research you've done into finding a babysitter in Canada, how much you will pay for that per month, what your contingency plans will be, etc. Also, I would need to see that you have a very healthy bank account before I become convinced that you could pull this off. 3. Leaving with both kids significantly weakens her ties to Nigeria, how am I convinced that she won't go to Canada and then refuse to come back to be with her husband in Nigeria? Pardon my raw wording, but yeah you can allay this concern by deftly emphasizing the strength and importance of your relationship with your husband in your SOP. You will also need to get a consent letter from him stating why he supports/advocates you taking both kids (instead of a consent letter, he could just include these in his notarized sponsorship letter/affidavit). These have to be strong reasons o. The long and short of all this is that you should think about all the possible objections that the VO could have and then pre-emptively and convincingly address them all. If I were you, I would either apply with only one kid or apply alone and then once I get my TRV I would apply for them all to join me! ![]() I think you can pull it off if you do a good job addressing the concerns I just raised and any other ones that occur to you. @Team12, thoughts? pattyreal: |
About the airport pickups: out of curiosity, of what nature is the nonprofit that does the pickups? Is it a religious organization or church? Please tell the house what sort of nonprofit it is. There shouldn't be an issue with putting it on here publicly. A couple pages back a gentleman who schools at Waterloo posted that a Redeemed Church he knows does pickups from the Toronto Airport. I'm not asking to be a pain but I think it would be good to know what sort of organization it is. Also, my sister will be going to Carleton in January if she gets her visa. Thanks. ElCapt: |
@CHERIPH you tried to send me a PM and I responded to your email address but it bounced back. You might want to fix your Nairaland email address. Cheers. |
@Graviton2 I hope the worst doesn't happen. In the mean time, you could consider pretending you didn't see the "dispatch" message and go ahead and call VFS to identify what document(s) they are requesting. |
@obiaguna, no offense taken. I understood you meant it in a good way. |
@hayqinsbFX, I hope you don't need it either bro. I eagerly await and hope for positive TRV news for you o. You were the first and only person that answered my questions when I first joined this thread. Cheers |
@MichaelFinn, the information you provided is immensely helpful to current and future readers of this thread. @HayqinsbFX, if you read the email sent to MichalFinn, the admissions coordinator did not promise him admission to the program. They only suggested he apply which he did. If you are curious, I would suggest you put your skin in the game by applying. |
double post, deleted |
The guy stated that someone contacted him because the PGD program he applied to was full. Even though the school has the policy in the email you just shared, this doesn't mean that what michaelfinn stated couldnt be true. Typically most programs don't promise you admission before you apply. The best you are likely to get, if you initiate interaction with the program, is that they will evaluate your application and not automatically decline you. The objective of your inquiry is to see if your 2:2 CGPA will not be an automatic reason for refusal. But they generally can't promise anything beyond that, unless you already applied and they like what you submitted. hayqinsbFX: |
You are welcome. By the way, if you're going to use the word "nigger", you should spell it as "nigga". I have an extreme aversion to both words but can at least tolerate the latter. Also, in some quarters in the US and likely Canada, both words (particularly the former) are considered to be extremely offensive (by black people as well, especially the well educated). Just saying ![]() obiaguna: |
Actually @michaelfinn's situation now makes sense. I went to the UOttawa site and apparently the minimum grade acceptable for a Nigeria BSc, depending on the graduate course of interest, is 2:2. See here. Indeed surprising. I agree it is better to just email the UOttawa program coordinator of whichever graduate program one is interested in to find out if they would consider one's application or if it would automatically be declined. pweetyfelicia: |
I'd suggest you email Fleming College to answer your first two questions. To notarize documents, see these links from the Nairaland German visa thread: this and this. @funmi14, could you let these folks know where you certified your documents or how to find a notary public? I have limited info vicumej: skymorbabs: |
@shinarambo1 You are right on the money. |
@MichaelFinn, thank you for the response. @TempusQ, hmm why you wan make I blow my cover na? ![]() |
@adenikky07 You are very welcome. Do not hesitate to ask for help in proofreading your SOP. @obiaguna No vex abeg. It's just that too many people come on here asking questions for which they could have used google to get the answer in 30 seconds. But for reals, information about tuition payment installments is one that you should email the school about. @MichaelFinn Abeg give us more information na. Would you mind sharing your CGPA and undergraduate course of study? This information would give hope to current/future 2:2 CGPA applicants on this thread -- I know a close friend in this predicament. What was the list of masters courses that the UOttawa person suggested applying for? |
@GboyegaD Ok thanks bruv! Yeah my weekend went well. Long weekend ke? My weekend was short o, na only Saturday and Sunday haha. Ah ok I see... I just noticed that Canada has a holiday today... actually I don't live in Canada, but I live in a similar country, one of the "Five Eyes" countries. Hope you are enjoying your long weekend -- I need one of those soon, man. |
Wow! @MichaelFinn. Congrats then! Is this "hint" very sensitive? I suppose the "hint" is fully legal so I couldn't imagine how it would come back and bite you in the butt. But I understand. ![]() MichaelFinn: |
The house is very curious to hear the story of your admission with 2:2. Did you average at least 3.5 CGPA on your last two years of BSc? ![]() MichaelFinn: |
Google is your friend. If you have access to this forum, then you sure are able to go to MUN's website to answer this trivial question. Also, you should email the school to ask about payment installments... heck, the MUN website might even have the answer sef. I entered this search phrase ("memorial university international student graduate tuition" ) into Google, and the first link answers your question. Please don't be lazy, no offense. Use the internet to your advantage. obiaguna: |
@GboyegaD True, the issue has now been resolved, with evidence that US and Canada share information about visa applicants with each other. Read my posts after the one you quoted and you'll find links from US State Dept and CIC announcing said sharing. Also, could you delete the long quote (my post that you quoted) in your previous post? It makes the thread run quickly. |
@adenikky07 Did you submit a Letter of Explanation (aka Statement of Purpose)? If "no", it is likely that the VO was not convinced about your motivations given that your undergraduate field of study (Human Resources) is different from your current occupation (Accountant) which is also different from the course you are planning to go for (International Business Management). This is often a reason for a "Purpose of Visit" delay. I would suggest you write a convincing letter of explanation that clarifies your motivations for going to Canada given your prior study and current occupation. The content of this letter should address how long you plan on staying in Canada, how the diploma would help you realize your goals in Nigeria, etc. You have to stylishly convince the VO that you will come back to Naija after your program. As per the "family ties in Canada and country of residence" reason, I'm not sure why the VO would tick this reason if you don't have family in Canada; do keep in mind though that once the VO has a big doubt about your application they sometimes just tick many reasons for denial. I suspect that if you write a strong SOP addressing all the issues, your chances would be much higher. If you have a big family in Naija, please somehow allude to that in your SOP. Also, make sure you get someone to read your SOP before you submit your next application. Additionally, if you don't have a strong enough reason to convince the VO about your planned "International Business Management" course, then I would urge you to pick another course that you can more easily justify. |
