Meanwhile no one has had the courage to take up my challenge above that is a mission impossible. Even on the other thread that I first made the challenge, my Igbo debater has surrendered and run for cover. Just 10 names each in the field of Medicine and Law, before the year 1900. |
revolt:Yes Prof Biobaku was stabbed by a single Yoruba student who ended his life in a psychiatric home. He was a Yoruba like Ademoyega, Banjo and Fajuyi, who were not like their tribalist Igbo friends. |
ofai:Oops! No name exist because it is a mission impossible for you and BankeSmalls. You cannot overcome the historical fact that you played catch up to the Yorubas who were setting African records when the Igbos were yet to have a secondary school. My case is closed with excellence! |
AustineE1:Name 10 Igbo lawyers and 10 Igbo doctors before year 1900, and I will name 10 of same that are Yorubas but are 2nd generation? Name any political party that was formed by the Igbos prior to 1940? Name any Igbo who served in the colonial service anywhere in Nigeria that was a university graduate prior to 1900? |
ofai:Zik got Nigeria independence yet he was a protege of a Yoruba politician who himself was in the midst of other Yoruba politicians already demanding for home rule. Zik got us independence, yet it is recorded as historical fact that the different times the motion for independence was moved, it was by the members of the Action Group, starting with Anthony Enahoro. The question then goes that, if CMS with its many Yoruba returnee slaves were able to realise the need for education among the Yorubas, why didn't freed Igbo slaves return to establish even a kindergarten that early? I gave a challenge early to an empty head. I now lay same challenge before you as BankeSmalls with a small brain couldn't face such mission impossible. Mention 10 Igbo doctors and 10 Igbo lawyers before the year 1900, who were known to practise in what exist as present Nigeria. Let us see who were the illiterate tribe as at 1900, and who did not have a secondary school as at then. |
ofai:Do you know how many Africans in the diaspora were educated just like Africanus Horton? Who is to say that those ones did not have Yoruba or Igbo or Ijaw ancestry? We are talking of Nigerians who identified with their tribe and lived with their tribe post slavery, or who never had any need to return from slavery seeing that they never departed their tribe as slaves. Funny enough, the same Africanus Horton was educated at CMS grammar school in Yorubaland, and never associating with his own tribesmen who were still cavemen in the eastern extremities of British protectorates in West Africa. That type of secondary school the Igbos would not have until well after the amalgamation of Nigeria, when the Igbos had to be kept abreast of what had become norm in Yorubaland. |
ofai:Who ever said they were regional schools? I am telling you that the Yorubas looked the British in the face and demanded for tertiary education, at a time the Igbos were yet to have secondary schools. Or you want to deny the above fact? Don't let me disgrace you here ooo. You are our catch up neighbours we share a country with. Besides that, we would have long developed if not for the British holding us back so that other Nigerians can have a chance at catch up. |
DerideGull:You can imagine how uninformed this dude is? |
BankeSmalls:Do you know how long it took the Igbo to have a Medical Doctor or Lawyer, after the Yorubas were already in their 3rd generation of those same profession. Do you think it is mere coincidence that Yorubas were already forming political parties so early and rightfully demanding a university from the British colonialists? Or you think Yaba Higher College and University of Ibadan were sited in Yorubaland by coincidence? It will forever be remembered that Azikiwe was the protege of a Yoruba politician. That is how "illiterate" the Yorubas were, yet setting standards for the rest of Africa. Can you name 10 Igbo Doctors and 10 Igbo Lawyers before the year 1900? Oops! There was none in that jungle. Dare me, and I will name 15 Yorubas in each and give you Engineers too. Did you know that the first female Nigerian Doctor was Yewande Savage, who never practised in Nigeria, while the first female Nigerian doctor to have practised was Abimbola Awoliyi at 1938. While the first female Igbo doctor was in 1950, only to be killed the next year by the famous village science of envy by her own people? Did you know that the first black female to ever attend Oxford University, was a Nigerian called Lady Kofoworola Ademola, wife of Sir Adetokunbo Ademola? What were Igbo women doing then? They were busy shaving the heads of widows. Or you think it is coincidence that Yoruba women founded the National Council for Women Societies NCWS? Just like Yoruba Men, Yoruba Women set records for Africa. How illiterate is that to be a pioneer? Better return to your cave before I strip you naked with the truth that brings agony and misery. |
Ojiofor:Okotie Eboh was a thief who had been allowed to steal uncontrollably by the British, so he could become the financier of the NCNC and curtail Azikiwe to conform to British agenda in a post colonial Nigeria. Even before independence, he had held lofty cabinet positions that gave him access to public funds and assets. He was nothing politically outside his own immediate enclave in the Midwest, and had no political ambition beyond having access to even steal more money. He had his ministerial job, and faced it, never posing a threat to the Igbos in anyway, having already the handicap of being a minority tribe. He was overlooked for the role of senate president as a federal parliamentarian. |
ofai:My grouse is that the NCNC Igbos introduced nepotism and tribalism to the federal academia, and also sacrificed merit for tribalism in federal appointments. The regional universities employed citizens of their region. No one should have any grouse with that. It is only Igbos that had a problem with the Northernization policy of the North, and continue to lament over Awolowo rightly becoming premier of his own Western region ahead of Azikiwe. A move they found so bitter that they accorded him the special toga of tribalist for daring to rise above an Igbo immigrant in the Western Region. Lagos being the capital has nothing to do with Njoku's desirability, when Dike had already been appointed in Ibadan the capital of the Western Region. What mattered most is that rather than appoint the most qualified Nigerian, Azikiwe and his Igbo band of NCNC party men, appointed the most qualified Igbo. Those ones then took it further as evidenced by the University College Ibadan tribal oriented recruitment of Igbo staff. Akintola that complained about such was also termed a tribalist. |
ofai:Just as Biobaku was the pioneer professor of history at the university of Lagos. So what are the pieces to join besides Igbo dominated federal government appointing Igbos to federal positions. Meanwhile the pioneer African professor of anything at all in the whole of Nigeria and University of Ibadan, was Prof Dr Oladele Ajose, yet just because he wasn't singing Nzobu Nzobu as an Igbo clansman, he had to be overlooked for his Igbo subordinate. |
ofai:Ajose was and will forever remain the first tenured African Professor in Nigeria. A status and academic distinction that was not earned because he could eat Amala or dance Fuji. You are the ones who felt entitled to both federal jobs and regional jobs in regions far removed from your own. Even terming the great Awolowo a tribalist for daring to contest and democratically win the premiership of his own region, and also terming Ahmadu Bello an ethnicist for looking out for his own Northern citizens as a Northern Premier in his own region. You are so entitled, that anyone rightly seeking his own good in his own region, is termed a tribalist for not allowing the Igbos to dictate policy for them. Meanwhile you remained king in your own enclave that despite being ethnically heterogeneous, had the majority Igbos in total control of everything. |
ofai:If history was so critical to being considered for the position of University Principal, why was Saburi Biobaku who was in Unilag and considered as most notable Nigerian academic historian besides Kenneth Dike, not appointed as the first African Principal of University of Lagos? Instead, an Igbo professor from the sciences just like Ajose, Eni Njoku a Botanist, was considered as most qualified Igbo to be Principal. All of a sudden, the need for historians was not critical to the progress of University of Lagos, as no notable Igbo was historian there. By the time the Yorubas got their acts together, they ensured that Eni Njoku was not returned for another term as Unilag Principal, and Prof. Saburi Biobaku assumed the role merit should have ordinarily conferred on him from the onset. |
ofai:That you continue to spell Ajose as ajose, while ensuring to spell Dike as it is, does not surprise me when you eventually conclude with your text in bold. You are the one who is biased to see that the only qualification that Ajose had a shortcoming was his tribe being too achieving to the disliking of the British, and not being Igbo at a time Igbos had the political power, owing to the poor literacy of their Northern senior partners in government, to appoint school council chairman, or university Principal. History will always remember Ajose for the pioneer that he was, and how he was a victim of Igbo style of meritocracy - appoint the most qualified Igbo over the most qualified Nigerian. |
Y0ruba:Even Dike could not understand why he had to be called back from an unfinished Sabbatical in the USA to come become Vice Principal under the soon departing British Principal. He was apprehensive to accept the position he damn well knew he was the most senior and most qualified Igbo, but not the most senior or most qualified Nigerian. Just as the Igbos would have cried fowl if Brigadier Maimalari was appointed as first Nigerian Major General, ahead of Aguiyi Ironsi the most senior, or Ademulegun and Ogundipe who were the next ranking of all the 4 Brigadiers that were in contention for the promoting to Major General. It is for such slight that a more senior Ojukwu, rejected the authority of a subordinate Gowon. Yet our Igbo debater believes merit is only said to have been adhered to when an Igbo is appointed out of the blues ahead of his superiors. He is even trying to cast aspersions as to the academic credentials of the first African Professor in a globally multiracial environment in a then British run university. Oladele Ajose broke the glass ceiling for others to follow. Merit = Igbo Unfortunately, it was Igbos that self destruct and truncated the Igbo domination by nepotism agenda, out of excessive greed to have it all. |
ofai:So you do not know that it is political parties that run a government and appoint people into positions? Even till today, who appoints the VCs of federal universities? That I have to educate you about how political parties in government work, is a shame you could have avoided. Yet you are from a country where the citizens complain about PDP and APC, so why are we complaining about those parties if they are so irrelevant to their own regimes? Dude, you cannot erase the past history of Igbo nepotism and tribalism within the federal government of the first republic. You cannot dispute the qualification of Ajose as the most qualified, most pioneering and most senior for the position of Vice-Principal and eventually Principal of University College Ibadan. Ajose's only shortcoming was not being Igbo, in a country that had an Igbo Azikiwe as Governor General and later ceremonial President, and an Igbo NCNC party man as School Council Chairman as appointed by Azikiwe himself. But the most qualified Igbo and most senior Igbo just had to be appointed to suit the Igbo version of meritocracy. |
This one just learnt how to speak English. |
john650:I understand your viewpoint. The problem is a first generation immigrant should not be the one trying to join the ethnic citizens of that country in shutting the door as a political ideology. He is a direct beneficiary of immigration, he then enters and feels his own status and comfort in the country should not be hampered by immigrants coming after him. If he could not identify with those in favour of immigration, then he should remain a selfish spectator rather than be a champion of anti-immigration. |
A black immigrant supporting a party that is anti-immigration. A house nigger they called such in the American South. |
This man has my respect as a loyal party man. Him and Alex Ekwueme. |
Inspite of their opposition, he was elected. Now the irrelevant is looking for relevance, after declaring him enemy of Ndigbo in the early years of his regime as a follow up to the opposition at the governorship polls, that still did not stop a moving train from mauling all that lie in its path. |
The scales are beginning to fall. But those who for the love of filthy lucre have pierced their hearts with many sorrows, still continue steadfastly on the road to perdition, their pockets filled with blasphemous tithes and first fruits. |
ofai:Awo is to the Igbos the father of tribalism for contesting to be premier in his own Western region when he had an Igbo challenger from another party, and daring to become premier of his own region. For daring to compete in his own region, Awolowo is a tribalist. For ensuring nepotism, Igbos are competitors. I don't need to fear domination as my people are not famous for wailing like babies with claims of marginalization. We simply dictate our own rules in our own region, and surely we sit back to watch with amusement the protestations of only one tribe out of all the migrant tribes in our own midst - the Igbos. You are that predictable and self entitled. I have pointed out the nepotism that Igbos termed merit in the first republic, when less qualified Igbo's were appointed by fellow Igbos into offices that were above their station, while more qualified Yoruba seniors were overlooked. And as one Igbo got in, he made sure to bring the whole clan in. The same strategy you tried to do in the Western region politics and failed woefully. While the North already knew who they were dealing with and kept you from their regional jobs and offices, while you already dominated the federal space being the educated tribe in the North-East alliance of the first republic federal government. Despite dominating your multi-ethnic Eastern region and ensuring you dominated the federal government jobs, using the NCNC partnership with NPC, your people till this day continually wail that Amadu Bello did not allow them to have their way in the Northern region. Till this very post, even you are still in turmoil and agony that Awolowo democratically became the first premier of his own Western region, having formed a government with his own Action Group and independent parliamentarians who together formed a majority government. What manner of greed and baseless envy is the Igbo imbued with? Your greed is legendary and is exemplified by the recruitment conducted by Igbos in University College Ibadan. It was also the NPC/NCNC government that appointed Prof. Eni Njoku as Principal of University of Lagos, so no surprises at all. The Igbos must have it all. Still you wanted the very soul of the Nigerian Federal Government, hence the Igbo coup of January 1966, and the subsequent unitary decree of Aguiyi Ironsi. Your ways are known to all, and we have put you were you belong. If only your Igbo sons and daughters could erase the history of the Yorubas they always have to catch-up to. |
Michael004:Calling her a lazy thinker is more than apt. She calling historical facts as revisionism, only suggest that the truth of their ignoble past hurts to be brought to light after being concealed for so long. There is more from the past that will be dissected whenever these clansmen attempt to gloat, so that they can hurry back into their caves when the truth strips them nak.ed. As it is, she and her ilk will always remember what was read here, no matter how hard she wants to wish away the truth. |
ofai:You are what you are. Nepotism and tribalism are the watchwords of clannish men. Everyone else have wronged you for not allowing you dominate them, while you have never wronged others as all you have was obtained by merit - the Igbo version of it. |
ofai:I repeat, the only merit the Igbos know is Igbos first. If only you could remove Ajose's place from history just to legitimate your nepotism and tribalism with the Dike appointment? Unfortunately, you can't. You are what you are right before independence and till now. The Sardauna knows you best and rightly described you for what you are. |
For those who do not know, Porto Novo, the capital city of Benin Republic, is the Yoruba kingdom of Ajashe before it was renamed. It is now occupied by both Yorubas and the Guns of Dahomey (Benin Republic). |
ofai:It is no news that the British could never stand the "I know my rights uppity attitude" of the Yoruba employees in the colonial era. From Doctors to Engineers to Lawyers, Yorubas had them all, and they were not prepared to play servant to the British who most times were not better educated or experienced than the Yorubas, but the British felt no Briton must ever work under an African. And rightly, the Yoruba's wasted no time in forming a political party as early as 1908 to demand for the rights of the Yoruba people, at a time some tribes were still learning how to recite ABC. So Ajose was a riff-raff academic, yet became the first tenured African at the university that had a globally multicultural academia? Do you know what it takes for a Blackman to break such a glass ceiling? What is more pioneering than being the first in a race that is purely academic and research focused? What is more experienced than being the most senior on the academic board? You see why I rightly said that to the Igbos, merit means I Go Before Others? I can only imagine if Ajose was the younger and less experienced academic who was chosen over an Igbo professor who was more experienced, qualified and pioneering? Marginalization is the word the Igbos would have cried from that time till now. Keep exposing your hypocrisy, while I continue to haunt you with your ignoble past. Did the British who were also leaving the army not nominate a Yoruba Brigadier ahead of his peers who were a total of 4 Brigadiers, with the Igbo Aguiyi Ironsi being the most senior? Was it not Aguiyi Ironsi who was eventually promoted to become the Major General, and head of the Nigerian Army? |
ofai:Was Dike more pioneering than Oladele Ajose, a medical doctor and most senior African on the academic board of University College Ibadan? Was Dike more senior to Oladele Ajose who was the first tenured Nigerian professor in history? Is it false tale that Dike was called back from sabbatical in the USA to take the position of Vice Principal. While a more qualified Oladele Ajose was right there in Ibadan on the campus? You cannot erase the facts, and even Dike was apprehensive to accept the position that was being forced on him. I repeat merit to the Igbos is Igbos first, others follow. IGBO - I Go Before Others. |
IchimokuPilot:Yes that was his crime and he was arrested and prosecuted by Goodluck Jonathan, a fellow Ijaw and Christian, who tried to bribe them to claim that IBB sponsored the bombing, and even defended MEND immediately after the bombing, claiming it couldn't have been mend, only to arrest them after South Africa arrested the main suspect, Henry Okah. Same Jonathan will later foolishly reveal during his reelection campaign in 2014/2015 that he had security reports that MEND would attack on that independence day, so his own security quickly drove him out of the venue. During the reign of Jonathan, Charles the younger of the Okah brothers who was languishing in jail in Nigeria, wrote Cardinal Okogie as a former St Gregory's student, to complain about how the Jonathan regime was deliberately abusing his human rights in prison, while the same regime was treating boko haram suspects like kings in the same prison. |
