Travel / Re: Is Relocating To Namibia Worth It As A Nigerian? by ThunderingHooves: 1:49pm On Sep 22, 2016 |
souleymon:Namibia is a prosperous, sober, peaceful, thriving country in southern Africa best known for its diamonds and fish industry . Namibians are a very quiet, unassuming people who are courteous and non confrontational to a fault. Very good folks, am proud to call a good number of Namibians my personal life long friends since my teen years. Along with Botswana, it's what like to refer to as the Scandinavian countries of Africa for the way they provide for social services and welfare to its most vulnerable citizens (octogenarians and other disadvantaged groups receive a State stipend ). For my liking its hot as hell, what with it being in the Namib and Kalahari deserts. Not to say there are unproductive regions, esp in its north. Next time reconsider the meaning of struggling and get to say factual things based on your own experience or educated deductions about other African countries. Stop flogging this dead horse called "All African countries are useless ", because truth be told alot of things actually do work in a good number of them. 16 Likes 1 Share |

Yes, indeed its a crying shame Nigerians import flowers from Europe, which imports them from Kenya and Ethiopia. Next valentines Day, when you buy or receive a rose, rest assured it was grown in Kenya. :

donbenedict:When idle people camp up on cheap gossip websites from Kenya and then post it on nairaland, it means the "news" is found only on those sleazy websites and nairaland ,primarily for audiences that cannot glean fact from fantasy. Most kenyans no doubt have no idea that there exist people on NL who wish to smear their citizens' good name, and they don't care either. You only get to hear what you want as they say. If you look for a tiger, you shall surely find one. More to the point - the domestic help industry thrives in the gulf countries and is a major employer of young women from asian and african countries. Filipino maids feature prominently as they are considered a trustworthy nationality, as are kenyans. 8 Likes 1 Share |

adami:That's the spirit. Yourself and @Pavore9 are providing the best in analysis straight from the horses mouth-9ja people who have lived in Kenya and other african countries. I have been to Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique,Tanzania,Rwanda,Uganda, S Sudan for considerable portions of time. I agree that our public health system has many bugs, but its not as desperate as what i saw in Tanzania and Mozambique for instance. We even have a national health insurance scheme open to all adults for a measly 200 shs or so per month. That being said, it's the basics we should get right. Also, where this conversation should focus, seeing as it exists to support /rebut what this man FFK has said. By this i mean things like access to clean water, maternal and infant mortality, literacy levels, access to electricity, access to sanitation,..... etc you know the development indicators drill ? 2 Likes |

Sometimes i laugh out loud. Someone gives you a map, pictures and all, and you insist it's "Kenya ". I guess "Kenya " is a euphemism now, not a country. Seriously, i took one look and i knew that was an OmuHimba woman. I know my African peoples that well. (Note the use of proper people description, call them as they call themselves.). A proud and truly authentic people who live life by their own terms, you would be hard pressed to find amongst them modern day afflictions. Below i present a famous "OmuHimba" .Anyone recognise her?? Hint/ clue : nicknamed the "pocket rocket" in her homeland :

OnucheAdams:Thanks for the positive appraisal. It pains me when i read the twitter comments of the former minister (quite disgraceful ), even worse that he participated in such an infantile e-fight. I know that serious and development minded Nigerians and Kenyans will be doing things , as opposed to yabbing. They have no time for petty quarrels. Most people are uninformed of what other African nations are like. Having been to 13 nations, i can only claim knowledge of what i surmised then, but not now. Which leads me to wonder out loud : is the mau mau the only thing the minister knows about Kenya? We have a saying around here "Nyani haoni kundule". In Swahili it literally means "the monkey does not see its butt", but its meaning is " do not laugh at your neighbors misfortune, you could be next ". Both our nations have a long way to go on basic development indicators, so it is ridiculous for the former minister to speak thus. He should also remember that he can be easily faulted for his comments, seeing as we live in an information age, where everything is available at a mere click. OnucheAdams:[quote author=OnucheAdams post=49059126] Brother, but am lost here, why do you think Mombasa is "moribund "? I believe the reason Mombasa and the country generally, excels as a tourist haven has more to do with its peace and tranquility. There is also the aspect of conference tourism you must consider. Agriculture / Re: FG Signs Mou On Dairy Production And Development (photos) by ThunderingHooves: 10:12am On Aug 30, 2016 |
joinnow:Actually, the dairy sector in Kenya had always been small holder driven and followed a pattern similar to that of other agricultural commodities like sugar, coffee and tea whereby a central factory collects and processes for onward distribution. The game changer occurred in 2002 when the new government decided on a deliberate path to develop the sector with a view to modernising it. You might not believe it, but the prior regime followed policies that stymied growth in the sector, nearly killing it entirely by the year 2002. God being always great, rescued the small holder in time (most have less than 5 cows by the way) when the new regime pursued a path that grew the sector. It must be remembered that most kenyan communities have age old practice of keeping family cows for a vast range of purposes not least milk production, so the new way simply leveraged onto this to grow something meaningful. Another oft unmentioned factor in dairy success in kenya is the overwhelming consumer preference for liquid (as opposed to powdered) milk. And the demand for it is high because we consume alot it. We drink tea at the slightest excuse, and many want milk in their tea. Also, other milk products like sour milk(i believe it is called foro de nono, excuse my bad spelling ) etc, that are consumed widely. I have asked in another thread of the consumer preference in milk in Nigeria, and i get the impression most people like things like peak milk etc which are condensed or powdered, and therefore require reconstitution. Here, that is abomination. If there exists a sustained production and a critical mass if people in future that can assure production and consumption of liquid milk ,that is the way to go i. e develop milk drinking culture now. A situation whereby there is alot of milk but little consumption might be like selling sand to saudi arabia!!!! The breeds used in milk production are also critical. Know your region and seek advice from veterinary doctors on whether they can withstand heat or parasites /vectors - especially tsetse fly. Its no use trying to use a Holstein where they cannot survive. Other good milk breeds exist e. g jerseys and their crosses with indegenous cows. Better still, a super cow for all nigeria that can produce, say 15 litres /day can be developed This can and has been done elsewhere. That being said, i hope and pray the new direction in Nigeria will bear fruit. My feeling is that it should seek to empower as many people as possible. i. e be inclusive. It should be smallholder centred and not look like a mega project kind of approach. |

Absolutely epic movie that was the defining movie of my childhood. Brought the Black liberation struggle to my VCR( dvd players were just entering market back then) and straight into my living room and into our collective conscience . I have the soundtrack to this movie on my hard drive and always play it on weekends or any special occasion, when me and my mates meet to reminisce about the good old days, and to remind us of when we were younger. I am going to download a good remastered copy. South africans on Nairaland please provide translation for the lyrics. I especially love the sechaba and sabela songs, if only i knew what they meant. Do they still produce musicals at all or did the liberation struggle cease being a motivational factor in literature/movies/books coz i don't seem to see much material on that front, its all about crime and false American inspired hip hop hapless mimicry. Hbuyosh:njema kabisa. Tunasema waache upuzi wa kutubandika mafala. That being said, this useless kenya bashing i see on NL has reached epidemic, and quite frankly, ridiculous proportions. It stands to reason that one must confront it and the purveyors of such lopsided images of kenya have to stop. I suspect the reason many have this warped view is the ease with which one can access information from the cheapest of handsets, what with many networks enticing clients with free data all over the place. It becomes a nightmare when an idle person is in possession of such a phone and worse when he qualifies for free data. Add onto that an unimaginative individual with minimal social skills and exposure, and booom!! . Don't forget that compared to most countries on the continent, we have a huge online presence, so when one googles information with africa in the tag, you are bound to have kenya there. 1 Like |

Some of these names roll off my tongue with ease: Mary Onyali, Ogunkoya Falilat, Chidi Imoh, Egbunike Innocent..... I had the privilege of seeing them in the flesh. As a young boy in Nairobi, my mind was occupied by many interests, not least running /athletics, seeing as we were a preeminent nation in that sport and as the hosts i took full advantage and went to see them run. So i took off with my elder sister and cousin since we all shared a keen interest in sports, to the stadium to go see them run. ( My deskmate and one of my sisters were among the kids doing the Opening ceremony gymnastics and had free entry, so they snuck us in... lol! ). I thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle of athletes from every corner of Africa converging in one space to either out run each other or kick a piece of leather into the back of a net, or through a hoop as many times as possible. I also knew who the main rivals were and i think the 400 finals for men was the most epic one in athletics. And the unthinkable happened when an Ethiopian won the marathon in Nairobi : for us losing to our greatest rivals and neighbors in a distance event at home was the ultimate shame.!!! jejemanito:We excel in spite of the odds. And because our sportsmen/women put all their heart and soul into their practice sessions They say, "train hard, win easy". That is no idle maxim when you have our sportspeople in mind. You speak of geographical advantage - if you attribute our victories to nature's providence, i challenge you to harness the same nature to your advantage, and see the results. I suspect you wouldn't get far with that premise instead it would most certainly be due to the the case stated above viz. hard work. Just to let you know, kenyans are increasingly winning in events not normally associated with them e. g the javelin, where we won silver. Let us not discuss rugby sevens( we were serious medal prospects for Rio, it somehow conspired against us) where we are ranked top 10 consistently for the last 10 years or so. Our women's volleyball squad inexplicably ruined its chances for Rio when they mis prioritised playing schedules over the Olympics qualification ,when they are known to be the scourge of the continent. I can go on,the list is long. I challenge you to look at the final medals table again, and the all time medals table and see where we stand There is no mistake in either. 6 Likes |

It isn't too difficult to take time and read the text again and see the woman had reached the end of her tether. I mean look at her, she looks none the worse for wear in the photos. She must and should be excused for behaving that way, she has been humiliated by the man too severely to warrant rational actions on her part. And for future reference, there are alot of things going on in Kenya, good and bad, but overwhelmingly good .
