Are you insinuating that I'm lying?
I don't think there exists a local breed that produces 10 litres of milk per day from a healthy lactating cow at peak production. Certainly not the white fulani breed. @Pavore9 has a point. Maybe you might elaborate your claim as literature indeed confirms the breed I have just mentioned produces 1-2 litres perday.

I remember as a high school student in nairobi diligently studying his novel "The Concubine", for my o levels. I distinctly remember trying to get our local tongues around some of the names in the novel. We also marvelled at the similarities in cultural practises described in the book between those of his community and some of ours. Feels just like yesterday.

He shall be dearly missed by lovers of books everywhere.

In another light, i guess the Brits got tired of having to buy their groceries in kg and grammes, they wanted good old pounds and ounces back. National quirks should be taken very seriously.

I disagree with this report although I think your posting was apt.

The report is written from a portfolio managers point of view and it is extremely short term in scope. Brexit means more trade with Africa not less. The UK is going to take a hit of between 50-65 billion on an annual basis. This funding gap has to be replaced. Where? The old Commonwealth sounds like a good place to start. In the past this body was more like a tea party/ photo op but it does have the architecture to be much more. If the UK is no to shutter factories and lower production it must find new markets and strike new trade deals.

Trade deals that are now free of the influence of EU policies and restrictions.

On a personal basis I think Brexit will hurt Britain in the short run. It has to find new trade deals to fill the gap and it won't find them in China. It will want to leverage on its old relationships and the Commonwealth represents a great outlet.

Fund managers think equity and bond investments. They also think grants and concessionary loans. I am talking about investment into the real sector. The real place Africa needs it.

Am no financial guru, but i know this: London's position as a financial centre is threatened as most of its financial preeminence is tied to its EU connections. About 2/3 some say. These financial services are an important part of the UK economy, you could even say a bedrock(this is why they are able to weather financial shocks ).They even have a special passport for finance people from across ththe EU to come do their business in the UK at reduced rates. Where are these important people going to go? Switzerland you might say? No way. Switzerland runs a deficit with the EU in that regard.

The African nations mentioned have intimate ties and long standing deals with the brits, and some are also tied to its EU membership. Exit the UK, and we have to renegotiate them and poof!!!, there goes your escape options when the UK market doesn't respond accordingly or even seek other options. Most of them use British banks as their de facto lenders i.e the true central banks of their nations.

Brace yourselves for serious volatility ahead.

Kudos to the team that built this. YOU are the future of Africa, the scientists and engineers whose skills form the bedrock of a modern economy. Work and work harder at this and never accept to be satisfied with whatever you build, always strive to be better at it. You may fall as you inevitably shall, but its how and if you get up that counts. That is how great scientists and engineers are made, talk less of great people. Remember the pain that a beautiful butterfly as a larva must endure to get out of it's pupa. The greatest beauty comes out of the greatest pain. NEVER listen to the naysayers, not only for they lack if alternative they offer, but for your own personal good.

Am a Kenyan and am going to share this with a group of budding inventors today, to showcase the innovations around the continent as well as to motivate them. Perhaps they may even request a competition> now what could be better than a competition to stimulate one's creative juices??

Once again, kudos.

If i were to begin commercial milk production,at whatever scale, what would the uptake be like? That is to say, can i be assured that Nigerians would provide a steady market for milk and milk products.

Does milk consumption vary by region?

Te reason i ask this is i read a news report that Shonga farms run by the oyibo farmers from Zimbabwe were forced to pour out excess production by their cows.

Average milk yield per female cow is 1 litre per day which is poor when you compare with the 30 litres per day in the article below.

Govt/Dangote need to intervene with free artificial insemination and force Fulani/Individual Investor to adopt zero grazing. Thats the way forward.
1 litre per cow per day is too little. Something very urgent needs to be done. Personally i think entrepreneurs should seize this opportunity and do something. Govts can act as catalysts, but not the main driver.
Anything less than 15 litres from a lactating cow per day is poor. There are many other breeds that can outdo fulani cow, and give more and better meat.

Business men, see opportunity.

@Willie2015, even as at 2013, the 7,000 litres is so paltry! Kenya annual production is about 5 billion litres, reason why Dangote is setting up factory in Kenya to process fresh milk to powdered and EXPORT to Nigeria! angry
I believe this is also not wise by Dangote. He should look to produce milk in Nigeria and relieve pressure on the Naira occasioned by imports. Maybe i need to be enlightened on his motive.

@Willie2015 or anyone else, what is the average or typical milk production PER COW in Nigeria?

Our minds have been shaped into believing that anything cow, is the exclusive of the North. When the South go into dairy farming and adopt zero grazing, milk will be transported in tankers as it is done in Kenya. The North choose to stick to their nomadic style which is a total economic waste because as the cows roams they tend to produce less milk.

How sad. Nigerians deserve fresh milk just like everyone else. Away with the powdered stuff i have been hearing of. All is not lost however, as change is the only constant in life.

Anyone can own a cow!!!!! I suspect Holstein Friesians or any other exotic breed can struggle in most parts of Nigeria, but i think Jerseys or a high yielding cross with one, might be the key to success.

Eyah! You don't know Kenya and with Nigeria's present economy, Kenya is a cooler place to be if one is economically engaged. Living in Nairobi, electricity is a guarantee, food is way cheaper and getting dollar and other foreign currencies is just a walk into a Forex shop and with your ID and 101 shillings one gets a dollar. One Kenyan shilling used to exchange for N1.89 now 1 Kenyan shilling now exchanges for N3.50. Even Nigerians deported, always find their way to smuggle back in.

Kenya is not just only about maasais and the marathoners as they only represent 2 tribes out of their 43. Their coastal region have people who look very much like the Fulanis in complexion, they are tribes that bear names like Olubayo, Amadi, Okoro, Ngige etc. The coastal region is where western tourist troop to enjoy the feel of Africa...the resorts built overlooking the white sand beaches of the indian ocean. Kenya is the top tourist destination in Africa.

Yes. It will shock the things that Nigeria imports. They import even other species of Aloe Vera and common plants for wedding bouquets. Every single fresh wedding bouquet in Nigeria has imported flowers. When I asked a florist, he said all the brides come in with saved images of something they saw on Keeping Up With The Kardashians and only a bad businessman would say no. Our appetite for imports is crazy. I have seen 2 instances of tropical wedding bouquets or wreaths in the past 5 years. And they don't know how to condition the roses and imported flowers to last in our climate so more than half those roses are usually wilting when you get them. My Valentine's day bouquet, only some white 'mums managed to stay a week, the rest were dying as they came home (red roses went first) sad

I'm almost tempted to offer to pay for a bride's wedding bouquet if she will use tropical flowers (and if I have the money grin). But they're so much nicer than half-wilted flowers and so much more colourful. And it's way cheaper to use local than imports. I know a while back I asked a florist and she said she once had an order for a tropical arrangement but she couldn't make it up from the growers in Nigeria and had to fly them in. So there is that angle.

I was informed by a professional gardener that only a greenhouse would help grow roses down south because even in India they have the same issue (altitude and climate issues means small rosebuds). That's why Jos is so crucial: perfect conditions but human factor.

I'm hoping to speak to a botanist on this matter, so maybe an experiment will be coming soon...
I absolutely love this post. I have been enlightened about different types of flowers and would like to ask: from where do these flower imports come?

Folks in the South west should be smart enough to grow veggies and spices such cabbage, lettuce, coriander, parsley, cucumber, mint, celery etc for the huge Lagos market which share the same population size of Cameroon rather than the stereotyped thought it has to be grown in the North, haulage through the south western states before they end up on the tables of Lagosians! All these crops are harvested between 45 to 90 days
The day Ogun State and Oyo State would wake up to the massive potential of dairy farming, is when they would realize they have wasted their time waiting on monthly allocation from Abuja. Diary farming is not a Northern preserve, it can be practised across Nigeria adopting zero grazing. A litre of pasteurized milk bought at the dispensing machine sells between N120-N140 across Kenya because diary farming is no longer a big deal as one can get a litre of raw milk for N60. These States should train their people on diary farming, so that we can have thousands of small holder farmers who should be producing an average of 250 litres daily that would be centrally collected, processed and sold to their local markets and transported in tankers to Lagos to meet the demands of the millions there! It is no rocket science as it is a common sight seeing tankers of milk on Kenya highways!
Nice one @Pavore9 what is the general disposition of Nigerians towards consumption of fresh milk(as opposed to peak and powdered milk). This i think is important in planning a dairy venture.

Is the state you mentioned amenable to delicate dairy cows?

Nigerians and bushmeat! Conservation is not in our dictionary! l give it to Kenya as you dare not try this in that Country as such animals na government pikin. Even if you see them destroying your property you still have no right to touch them, all you have to do is inform the Kenyan Wildlife Service and they come assess the damages and pay you compensation.

lt is only the Kenyan Wildlife Service that that have the right to kill such animals subject to their discretion. Kenya annually makes billions of dollars from wildlife conservation as TV stations like Discovery Channel, National Geography pay millions of dollars to shoot their wildlife documentaries here not to talk of regular tourists who fly in for safaris. l know if the maasai mara was in Nigeria the hundreds of thousand of the wild animals there would have ended up in our pots as bushmeat! When they migrate it is a beauty to behold, people fly in from all over the world to view it .One really need to experience their migration to really appreciate wildlife

Kenyans are taught from their primary school level that the wildlife is their national heritage and foreign exchange earner.

Very well put sir. There is a very long and complex value chain to wildlife tourism. Wildlife can spin off many industries like travel agency, TV documentary sector(think Discovery and Natgeo wild etc), selling curios and mementos to foreign visitors, there is even special safari tourism insurance. All these are direct employers. We have alot to learn from wild animals e.g some scientists say some fauna have an ability to fight cancerous cells from their natural immunity. These tissues can be isolated and studied for human benefit.

I wish and pray that Nigerians wake up and see the Natural heritage God has entrusted them with before its too late.

I didnt spot this post before from one of my fav Nairalanders, always looking forward to your posts. Have a merry christmas.

More like cushitics who adopted bantu language and customs.

People seem to forget the same social classes i.e. tutsi vs hutu also exist among other inter lacustrine bantu e.g tutsi = hima and hutu =bairu amongst the banyankole. Same goes with the Ha of Tanzania who are proximate to rwanda/burundi and speak similar language.see @muafrika 's post above.

All the same the confusion about igbo bantu affinity/relations remains.

Enjoying topic.

Am an armchair enthusiast of genetics and history.

Has anyone tried to link common phenotypes amongst igbos to any bantu group? e.g many full blooded tutsis share common phenotypes with some ethiopian highlander types suggesting common origin.

Also is there similarity styles in traditional(pre colonial) architecture?
