Didier Deschamps’ squad are still yet to find their best form four games into their tournament and spent the best part of an hour against Ireland sweating on their Euro 2016 future before Antoine Griezmann came to the rescue.
The indifferent form of the French compares markedly to Iceland, still unbeaten in tournament football and having belied the tag of “plucky underdogs” with a composed, disciplined display against England in which they were by far the better side.
Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge were unable to find a way past the Icelandic defensive wall, will Dimitri Payet and company endure similar struggles at the Stade de France? If not, the French defence will need to show far more resolve on set pieces than England did.
Team news
Leicester City midfielder N’Golo Kante and Sevilla centre-back Adil Rami will both be unavailable to Deschamps after picking up their second bookings of the tournament whilst Arsenal pair Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny will both be on a disciplinary tightrope ahead of a possible semi-final against either Germany or Italy.
Griezmann hopes to move into a central attacking position after his double secured a 2-1 victory over Ireland and it may be that Giroud, without a goal since the opening game, makes way for the Atletico Madrid forward.
Iceland have no significant disciplinary concerns and, notwithstanding any late fitness worries, are unlikely to make major changes to the side that so comprehensively outclassed England.
Possible XI
France: Lloris, Sagna, Koscielny, Umtiti, Evra, Matuidi, Cabaye, Pogba, Coman, Griezmann, Payet
Iceland: Halldorsson, Saevarsson, R. Sigurdsson, Arnason, Skulason, Gudmundsson, G. Sigurdsson, Gunnarsson, Bjarnason, Sigthorsson, Bodvarsson |

Joachim Low's side have won all but one of their matches in the tournament in France so far - a goalless draw against Poland in the group stages - and their 3-0 victory over Slovakia in the last 16 showed they are moving into top gear at just the right time.
But Antonio Conte's Italy team will be difficult opposition to overcome, with the Azzurri having disposed of reigning European champions Spain 2-0 in Paris - while doing the same to Germany in the 2012 European semi-finals.
Goals from Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle along with a passionate and tactically superior display from the entire team helped Italy book their place in the next round on Monday, despite pre-tournament expectations being low.
And Italy now have the chance to answer their critics further if they can secure a win over Germany in what is sure to be a much-anticipated clash between two great footballing nations.
Team news
Conte will be without the services of midfielder Thiago Motta, who is suspended after picking up a booking in the 2-0 win over Spain while Daniele De Rossi suffered a knock to his hip, although it remains to be seen whether he will start in Bordeaux.
Antonio Candreva has also missed the Azzurri's last two matches with a groin injury.
However, Low has no such injury concerns or suspensions to worry about.
Possible XI
Germany: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Hector, Khedira, Kroos, Ozil, Muller, Draxler, Gomez.
Italy: Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Florenzi, Parolo, De Rossi, Giaccherini, De Sciglio, Pelle, Eder. |

Wales' last - and only - major competition before this summer's European Championships was the 1958 World Cup, which the team slowly but surely progressed through until a quarter-final meeting with eventual winners Brazil saw the nation go crashing out.
In that game, a 17-year-old Pele scored his first goal for the Selecao to end Wales' journey in Sweden. It has taken 58 years for the nation to find their way back to a major competition, but Coleman's side now have the chance to go further than the famous Welsh squad of 1958.
However, their opponents in the next round of Euro 2016 Belgium will not prove so easy to beat, with Marc Wilmots' team steadily finding their feet in France following an opening loss to Italy.
Eden Hazard was the architect of the Red Devils' 4-0 thrashing of Hungary, and Coleman is likely to ask his men to try and stifle the Chelsea star if they want to beat Belgium - as they did in qualifying last year.
Team news
Coleman has been sweating over the fitness of captain Ashley Williams, who suffered a shoulder injury in the latter stages of Wales' 1-0 last-16 win over Northern Ireland. However, the defender has recovered and will start against Belgium.
Possible XI
Wales: Hennessey, Chester, Williams, Davies, Gunter, Allen, Ledley, Ramsey, Taylor, Bale, Vokes
Belgium: Courtois, Meunier, Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Nainggolan, Witsel, Mertens, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku. |

Portugal are yet to win a match in 90 minutes at Euro 2016.
Poland became the first side to reach the last eight after beating Switzerland 5-4 in a penalty shootout, with the scores level at 1-1 after extra time. Kuba Blaszcyzkowski continued his superb Euros record, opening the scoring in the first half. Blaszczykowski has scored or assisted five of Poland’s six goals in the competition’s history.
Poland were pushed back in the second half and conceded late on when Xherdan Shaqiri’s spectacular overhead kick beat Lukasz Fabianski. The Swansea keeper was in a great form on the day and looks set to keep out Wojciech Szczesny, should the latter recover from a thigh injury.
Poland converted all five of their penalty kicks in the shootout, with Granit Xhaka’s miss for Switzerland proving costly.
Portugal creeped through to the quarterfinal with a narrow 1-0 win over Croatia. Portugal were outplayed for the majority of the 90 minutes but held on for their fourth consecutive normal-time draw. The match looked to be heading for a penalty shootout before substitute Ricardo Quaresma struck in the 117th minute.
Speaking after the match, Portugal headcoach Fernando Santos said: “Sometimes you have to be pragmatic. It’d be nice to play pretty but that’s not always how you win tournaments. Both teams went into this thinking this was a key step towards the final and luck was on our side – we earned it. Next up, Poland.”
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo will be looking to add to his 2 goals and 2 assists while his Polish counterpart Robert Lewandowski is still to get off the mark in France. Teenage midfielder Bartosz Kapustka will be back in contention for Adam Nawalka’s side, having served a 1-match suspension in the previous round.
The match will be Poland’s second at the Stade Velodrome, following their 1-0 win over Ukraine in the group stage. The winner of the tie will face one of Wales or Belgium in the semi-finals in Lyon on July 6.
Possible XI
Poland: Fabianski, Piszczek, Glik, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk, Blaszczykowski, Krychowiak, Maczynski, Grosicki, Milik, Lewandowski.
Portugal: Rui Patricio, Soares, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro, Joao Mario,, Adrien Silva, Carvalho, Renato Sanches, Nani, Ronaldo. |

England qualified for the last 16 as runners-up of Group B, missing out on top spot to UK rivals Wales. Drawing two and winning one of their three matches, the Three Lions finished on 5 points.
After a draw with Russia and a late come-from-behind win against Wales, England were held to a 0-0 draw with Slovakia that ultimately cost them top spot. Roy Hodgson made six changes to the side which started the previous two matches, with Wayne Rooney, Dele Alli and Harry Kane all starting on the substitutes bench. Jack Wilshere was handed his first start of the tournament but failed to impress before being substituted off before the hour mark.
England are expected to stick with the side that started the opening matches, although Raheem Sterling may struggle to keep his place after two poor performances. Everton’s John Stones and Ross Barkley are the only outfield players yet to get any game time.
Despite being pictured with strapping around his angle, Rooney has confirmed that he will be fit for the match.
Only Portugal have fired in more attempts than England’s 65, although Iceland won’t be too concerned. Goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson has made more saves (19) than any other goalkeeper at the tournament.
Iceland reached the Round of 16 in dramatic fashion. The minnows looked set to qualify in third place in Group F before substitute Arnor Traustason scored a 94th minute winner against Austria to hand them second place. England will need to watch out for Aron Gunarsson’s long throws into the box. The Iceland captain set-up Jon Boedvarsson’s opener with one of his deliveries.
The side co-managed by Lars Lagerback & Heimir Hallgrimsson have exceeded expectations and are still unbeaten after three matches. Alfred Finnbogason will return to the squad after serving a one-match suspension.
Iceland’s star player, of course, will be Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, who is capable of scoring from open play and with set-pieces against the Three Lions.
It’s also worth noting that Iceland are Premier League crazy football fans. Will this give them an extra boost against the English, or will they freeze on the big stage?
The winner of the match will face one of France or Ireland in the quarter-finals.

The match is a repeat of the 2012 final which Spain won 4-0.
Italy head into the match on the back of a 1-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland. Robbie Brady’s 85th minute header secured a deserved win over the Azzurri. Monday’s opponents won’t read too much into the result, however.
With top spot already assured, Italy boss Antonio Conte made nine changes for the Ireland match. The likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Eder are all expected to return to the line-up to face Spain. Antonio Candreva is a doubt for the match with a hamstring strain.
Italy confirmed themselves as group winners with an emphatic 2-0 win over Belgium and a 1-0 victory over Sweden in their opening two matches.
Spain enter the Round of 16 as runners-up of Group D. Like Italy, Spain won their opening two matches before losing the third 2-1 to Croatia. Alvaro Morata opened the scoring but Nikola Kalinic equalised against the run of play on the stroke of half time.
Sergio Ramos had a penalty saved in the second half before Ivan Perisic scored an 87th-minute winner. For the third game in a row, Cesc Fabregas started in a midfield trio alongside Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta. Atletico Madrid’s Koke is rumoured to get the nod ahead of Fabregas against Italy.
Unsurprisingly, Vicente Del Bosque’s men have the highest pass completion rate at the tournament, completing 1876 of their 2023 attempted passes (93%). They also rank third for possession (61%).
While Alvaro Morata tops the scoring charts, tied on 3 goals with Gareth Bale, it’s the performances of Andres Iniesta that are getting the most praise. The 32-year-old midfield maestro has created 9 chances and completed 264 passes in three appearances.
It may not be an immediate concern but ten Italian players are one booking away from a suspension. The winner of the match will face one of Germany or Slovakia in the quarter-finals.
Possible XI
Italy: Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini; Candreva, Parolo, De Rossi, Giaccherini, Florenzi, Pelle, Eder.
Spain: De Gea, Juanfran, Pique, Ramos, Alba, Busquets, Iniesta, Fabregas, Silva, Nolito, Morata. |

Hungary qualified for the last 16 as winners of Group F. Level on 5 points with Iceland, Bernd Storck’s side topped the group on goal difference.
Hungary’s final group, a 3-3 draw with Portugal, match was perhaps the most entertaining of the entire group stage. They took the lead on three separate occasions, but were powerless to stop Cristiano Ronaldo at his best.
Veteran midfielder Zoltan Gera opened the scoring with a smashing volley from outside the area. The former West Bromwich midfielder had a pass success rate of 100% before being substituted on 46 minutes. Balazs Dzsudzsak added to the scoreline with a second half brace.
Although getting off to a terrible start by losing 2-0 to Italy, Belgium qualified for the Round of 16 as runners-up of Group E following back to back wins against Ireland and Sweden.
Roma’s Radja Nainggolan scored the only goal of the game against the Swedes to put Belgium level on points and goal difference with the Azzurri, who top the group on head-to-head.
In the absence of the injured Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen has stepped in admirably at centre-half. The Barcelona defender made a tournament-high 13 interceptions in the group stage. Vermaelen was on the scoresheet the last time the two sides met in a 3-0 friendly win in 2009.
No player has more assists than Belgium’s Eden Hazard (2). The Chelsea winger has also completed the second most dribbles (10) at the tournament.
Mousa Dembele is doubt for the match due to an ankle injury. Hungary’s Adam Nagy, Laszlo Kleinheisler, Tamas Kadar and Krisztian Nemeth will all come back into contention having been left out of the team to face Portugal to protect them from incurring a second yellow card of the competition.
The winners of the match will face either Wales or Northern Ireland in the quarter-finals.
Possible XI
Hungary: Kiraly, Lang, Juhasz, Guzmics, Korhut, Gera, Pinter, Lovrencsics, Elek, Dzsudzsak, Szalai.
Belgium: Courtois, Meunier, Alderweireld, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Nainggolan, Witsel, Carrasco, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku. |

Slovakia beat Germany 3-1 when the two sides met in a friendly match less than a month ago.
Germany qualified for the last 16 as winners of Group C. Although level on 7 points with Poland, a superior goal difference handed them top spot. Germany had more possession (65%) than any other side in the group stage, while Toni Kroos ranked 1st for completed passes (323).
Following their 2-0 win over Ukraine and goalless draw with Poland, Germany closed out the group with a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland. Mario Gomez, starting his first match at the tournament, scored the only goal of the game.
Slovakia qualified for the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed sides. Jan Kozak’s side finished on four points after losing to Wales, beating Russia and holding out for a goalless draw with England in their final group match.
Giving his thoughts on Sunday’s opponents, Kozak said: “It’s an experienced team, which is formed first of all by the players from the Bundesliga, one of the top leagues in the world,” Kozak said. “And they have others from Real Madrid, Arsenal and Juventus. So, we know who we face — a top class opponent.” Slovakia will be looking to be the first team to score a goal against Germany at the tournament.
Winger Robert Mak is an early doubt after picking up a hamstring injury against England. Despite a broken nose, defender Peter Pekarik insists he’ll be OK to start against Germany.
With Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze failing to score in the group stage, 30-year-old Gomez could be in line for another start for Joachim Low’s side. Jerome Boateng was taken off at half time against Northern Ireland with a calf injury and is a doubt for the match.
Benedikt Howedes and Joshua Kimmich will battle it out for the right-back berth. Whoever starts, they’ll have to watch out for Vladimir Weiss. Only Gareth Bale managed to better the Slovakia winger’s 10 completed dribbles in the group stage.
Awaiting the winner in the quarter-finals will be the winner of Italy’s Round of 16 match against Spain.
Possible XI
Germany: Neuer; Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Hector; Kroos, Khedira; Müller, Özil, Götze; Gomez.
Slovakia: Kozacvik; Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Hubočan; Kucka, Pecovsky, Mak, Hamsik, Weiss; Duda. |

The match will be the first meeting between the sides since their 2010 World Cup qualifying play-off, where Thierry Henry infamously handled the ball in the lead up to France’s winner from William Gallas.
France qualified for the last 16 as Group A winners with 7 points to their name. They come into the match on the back of a goalless draw with Switzerland.
Having already qualified as group winners, Didier Deschamps handed starts to Kingsley Coman, Moussa Sissoko, Andre-Pierre Gignac and Yohan Cabaye in a shuffled line-ups. The latter won an incredible 9 tackles, just 1 shy of the tournament-high total. Youngster Coman clocked a tournament top speed of 33 km/h.
Paul Pogba and Dimitri Payet came closest to scoring but were both denied by the crossbar. Payet had scored two goals in France’s first two group matches.
In the knockout match, Deschamps is expected to revert to the starting eleven that took to the field against Romania in the tournament’s opening match, with N’Golo Kante and Blaise Matuidi returning in central midfield and Olivier Giroud up top.
Ireland have progressed to the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Martin O’Neill’s side qualified as one of the top four third-placed sides, finishing behind Italy and Belgium in Group E.
The win against the Azzurri was epic. Ireland were on the verge of exiting the competition, but a dramatic late header from Robbie Brady, brilliantly assisted by substitute Wes Hoolahan, sealed a famous victory for the Irish, albeit against a much-changed Italian side.
Jonathan Walters missed the match with an achilles injury and is “trying to get fit” in time for the match against the Euro 2016 hosts. Martin O’Neill also confirmed that full back Stephen Ward is a doubt with an ankle injury.
Aside from those injury concerns, knowing how the Irish will line up against Les Bleus is hard to predict. Against Italy, O’Neill made four changes to his line-up. John O’Shea and Ciaran Clark were dropped for Shane Duffy and Richard Keogh, and Jeff Hendrick was in for Glenn Whelan in midfield.
Will O’Neill keep faith with the team the beat Italy? Will Hoolahan start?
What’s sure is that Ireland will be fired up for the match, and with Roy Keane in the dugout, their amazing fans in the stands, and with the Italy win under their belt, they will step onto the pitch believing they can beat the French on their own home turf.
Possible XI
France: Lloris, Sagna, Rami, Koscielny, Evra, Kante, Cabaye, Pogba, Griezmann, Giroud, Payet.
Republic of Ireland: Randolph, Coleman, Duffy, Keogh, Ward, Hendrick, McCarthy, Brady, McClean, Murphy, Long. |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Croatia Vs Portugal : Euro 2016 (0 - 1) On 25th June 2016 by timbros(op): 10:35pm On Jun 23, 2016 |
Croatia vs Portugal Croatia and Portugal will meet in the Round of 16 on Saturday night at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
Portugal are still looking for their first win at the tournament after draws in all three of their group games.
Croatia have firmly established themselves as the tournament’s dark horses, winning two and drawing one of their three matches to top Group D. Ante Cacic’s side will come into the match on the back of a 2-1 win over holders Spain, that ended La Roja’s 14-match unbeaten run in the competition.
The Spain win match followed a 1-0 win over Turkey and a dramatic 2-2 draw with Czech Republic.
Croatia fullback, and captain of the side, Darijo Srna has been instrumental to Croatia’s success, winning a tournament-high 10 tackles in the group stage.
Luka Modric and Mario Mandzukic both missed the win over Spain through injury, although Cacic remains hopeful that the duo will be fit in time to face Portugal.
Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic has enjoyed a fabulous tournament so far, scoring twice and generally looking menacing down the left hand side.
With Ivan Rakitic in the central, together with Marcelo Brozovic, it’s to understand why Croatia are tipped to do so well.
Portugal qualified for the last sixteen as one of the four best third-placed sides.
Arnor Traustason’s 94th minute winner against Austria saw his Iceland side leapfrog Portugal into second place; karmic justice after Cristiano Ronaldo criticised the Iceland team earlier in the tournament.
The Real Madrid forward was back to his best in Portugal’s final group match against Hungary. Having failed to score in the opening two matches, Ronaldo found the back of the net twice as Portugal came from behind on three occasions to draw 3-3 with Hungary. He also bagged the assist for Nani’s second goal of the tournament.
Ronaldo’s 30 attempts at goal is by far and away the most by a player at the tournament, and includes his penalty miss against Austria in the second match.
Raphael Guerreiro missed the last match with a thigh injury and is an early doubt for the game. There are also doubts over Andre Gomes after he was substituted off against Hungary as a precaution.
Portugal have not lived up to many people’s pre-tournament expectations, however they survived their group, and there are green-shoots for optimism including impressive performances from William Carvalho and Joao Mario.
It’s also worth remembering how Italy drew their three opening games at World Cup 1982, only to go on to win the competition. It’s been done before.
A couple of match facts: Portugal’s last seven goals at the Euros have been scored by Cristiano Ronaldo (five) or Nani (two), while Croatia have lost only one of their last 10 games at the Euros.
