@titiloyeblog.com Suspected herdsmen have launched fresh attacks on three communities in Adamawa State, killing 15 people and injuring three others. Among the dead are an elderly couple and their two granddaughters. Survivors said their village of Bolon in Drmsa Local Government Area and neighboring Bolki and Bujum villages within Numan Local Government Area were overrun on Wednesday night by heavily-armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. The assailants were said to have pounced on Bolon at about 10pm, shooting sporadically and torching more than 10 thatched houses, forcing surviving residents to flee for their lives. Robinson Filgona, Village Head of Bolon said: "At about 10 pm, some Fulani militants descended on our community, heavily armed and started shooting indiscriminately. Over 100 households in my community are now homeless because their houses have been burnt down. Our foodstuffs have also been burnt to ashes just like that; if you go round the village, you will see several of our houses are still on fire. My people need help, their food has been burnt and there is nothing to fall back to."Kwamoti Laori, lawmaker-elect for Numan/Demsa/Lamurde Federal Constituency, has lamented the frequent attacks and called on the authorities to restore security to the area. @titiloyeblog.com A 71-year-old man, Harvey J. Fountain, who was arrested on 50 counts of first-degree rape last week has now been charged with 50 more counts. Stephen Phillips of the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana said he began the crimes in the early 1970s and continued for a decade. He said all of the assaults happened in Pineville, La., and involved children under 13. According to Phillips, the decades-old accusations came to light April 1, when one of the victims disclosed the abuse to local authorities. The individual also informed the police that there were other possible victims. “One victim came forward and was aware of others that may have been a victim of Fountain’s,” Phillips told The Washington Post. “After additional interviews, additional victims were located,” Phillips said, though he would not say how many. “And, we still have more to interview.” Under Louisiana law, if the complainant is under 13, any type of intercourse —oral, anal or vaginal constitutes first-degree rape; there is no statute of limitations for the offense in Louisiana. The fountain was charged with 100 counts that involved more than one victim and occurred on various dates. Phillips confirmed that Fountain was known to the alleged victims but would not discuss the specifics of an ongoing investigation. The fountain is being held in Rapides Parish on $1 million bonds, according to the local records office. A grand jury date has not yet been set. source: http://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/04/71-year-old-man-charged-with-100-counts.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

No fewer than 390 visually impaired candidates are participating in the ongoing 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The UTME for the visually impaired, which is taking place in four centers, started on Tuesday and will be concluded on Wednesday, April 17. The Chairman, Equal Opportunity Group of JAMB, Prof. Peter Okebukola, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday at one of the venues of the examination at the University of Lagos. He told NAN that the candidates were sitting for the examination in Abuja, Enugu, Kano and Lagos centers. NAN reports that the Equal Opportunity Group is made up of senior academics, including experts in special education and other relevant stakeholders. Giving a breakdown of figures of the visually challenged candidates that were sitting for the examination in the four centers across the country, Okebukola said 57 wrote the examination at the Abuja center. He said that 59 others would write at Enugu, 135 at Kano and 139 others in Lagos. He noted that the subjects the candidates were examined on during the two-day examination included Agricultural Education, Arabic, Biology, Chemistry, Christian Religious Knowledge, Civic Education, and Commerce. He said others include Economics, Geography, Government, Hausa, History, Igbo Language, Islamic Studies, Literature in English and Mathematics. Okebukola added that Music, Physics, Use of English and Yoruba completed the number of subjects. “The goal of the Prof. Is-shaq Oloyede-led JAMB is to ensure that no Nigerian who is eligible is prevented from taking the UTME regardless of any disability. “The JAMB boss holds the firm view that we must have a level playing field for all candidates. “As long as the candidate is intellectually capable and meets the minimum conditions for admission in the university of choice, he or she should have a good chance of placement into any university,” he told NAN. The former National Universities Commission (NUC)’s Executive Secretary, added that this initiative by the board has been cited in the last two years in several countries as a good model for Africa. “So far, a respectable number of blind candidates processed through the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group have secured admission into Federal, State and Private Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education,’’ he said. He told NAN that the candidates were still taking the examination through the dictation mode because the board was preparing and getting them familiarised with the mode of administering lectures in tertiary institutions. “We know where these persons are going to and so, we also want to assist them by ensuring that they get exposed to what awaits them ahead. “That being said, we have also been working towards migrating to their own kind of Computer Based Test (CBT) in a year or two. “We are currently test running the software on this platform but I can assure you that in another year or two, we will fully migrate,” Okebukola told NAN. Mrs. Chioma Ohakwe, Proprietress, Bethesda Home for the Blind, Mushin in Lagos, said that the home presented of 25 candidates for this year’s examination. She said she was optimistic that her candidates would post impressive performance as the home had placed the candidates under intensive teaching, monitoring and supervision. “Infact, we had to hire eight new experts to handle and prepare these candidates. “We have been preparing them for this examination in the past one year. “We hired six professional teachers to coach them for this examination, one for just braille and another for computer, bringing the total of the new teachers to eight. “So, it is my expectation that they will post a better performance compared to their colleagues who sat for the examination in 2018,” Ohakwe told NAN. She pleaded with the board to fast track efforts in putting in place the CBT mode for the candidates, adding that they had complained of their inability to understand and get the words dictated clearly. Also, she said the candidates had lamented that it did not give them enough time to think before answering the questions. NAN reports that the 390 blind candidates are among the over 1.8 million candidates taking this year’s UTME which commenced on Thursday, April 11. source: http://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/04/2019-utme-390-visually-impaired.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

news @ titiloyeblog.com There were outcries on the social media on Sunday over the killing of a 20-year-old woman by policemen in Ajegunle, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos. Ada Ifeanyi was shot dead at 4b, Amusa Lane, off Ojo Road, Ajegunle on Saturday morning. The policemen also shot 32-year-old Emmanuel Akomafuwa, of 52, Babatunde Street, Olodi Apapa, at Akpiri Street, Olodi Apapa. However, Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained five police officers involved in the dastard act. As the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) releases the photograph of the officers, many took to social media to demand justice for the slain women. The officers, they said, should be tried as quickly as possible and be made to face a similar fate. This, some said, would teach others lesson. Donatus Igwe tweeted that the killing of innocent people by policemen is one too many. “We cannot continue like this. We deserve a better policing that what we are getting. There is a need for psychological tests on our officers before we hand over guns to them,” he said. May Ubeku @maybeks wrote that for every Nigerian killed by the police, they are pushing Nigerians to the wall. “They (the police) make us feel helpless and hunted. This may backfire someday and the hunter would be hunted irrespective of the guns they carry. #endpolicebrutality,” she said. Another tweeter @IchieDNonsHRM wrote: “Unfortunately, it is not the @PoliceNG that is the enemy of the youths in Nigeria. It is the Nigerian government itself that is the enemy of the youths.” Yemi Fasipe on @YemieFASH responded that “Today, it is okay to say that the Nigerian Police is an enemy of the Nigerian Youths. According to him, “We are yet to get over the murder of Kolade Johnson by men of the @PoliceNG, and just barely a week after they have killed another innocent Nigerian youth. Jessica (Ada) did not commit any crime. Looks like they have concluded to be killing us weekly. #EndPoliceBrutality.” Another tweeter @dubbledizzle said: “These police officers are usually in a unit headed by a leader/superior officer. Until their unit commanders are also held responsible, these killings will still continue. #holdtheirsuperiorsresponsibleToo” Elkana gave the names of the arrested officers as Inspector Adamu Usman, Sergeants Adeyeye Adeoye, Kashim Tijani, Lucky Akigbe and Paul Adeoye. According to him, Inspector Dania Ojo, who escaped immediately after the shooting, is declared wanted by the command. The Commissioner of Police (CP), Zubairu Muazu, he said, called for calm, as the command will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that justice prevails. He added that the CP expressed the command’s deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ada Ifeanyi and promised to foot the bills of Emmanuel Akomafuwa. Elkana said: “The victims were taken to a hospital and Ada was confirmed dead. Emmanuel is on admission receiving treatment for the injury he sustained. “Members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting are from Trinity Police Station and are facing internal disciplinary proceedings at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja. “Their rifles have been retrieved for forensic analysis by ballisticians. If found wanting, they will be prosecuted at a conventional court for murder. “The policemen arrested are: “Lagos State Police Command condemned in total, these senseless killings of unarmed civilians by few ‘bad eggs’ in the command, who are bent on denting the image of the police. “The command will not relent in its efforts in ridding the force of these criminals. Those involved in extrajudicial killings and abuse of power are promptly identified, isolated, tried through internal disciplinary proceedings, dismissed from service and prosecuted in conventional courts.” Elkana added that the command had in the last one month dismissed four policemen for abuse of power and conducts unbecoming of police officers and punished 41 others. “The four dismissed policemen were charged to court and remanded in prison custody. Our resolve in building a more humane, professional, dedicated, courageous and people-oriented force is a task that must be done and together we can make it a reality,” he said. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/04/inspector-declared-wanted-five-officers.html Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44

@ titiloyeblog.com Liverpool legend Tommy Smith, one of the key figures in the club’s first golden era, died on Friday at the age of 74. Smith’s no-nonsense performances at the heart of Liverpool’s defence saw him nicknamed the ‘Anfield Iron’ during his 18-year spell on Merseyside. Making 638 appearances for the Reds between 1960 and 1978, Smith won a host of medals as the club rose to prominence both domestically and in Europe. Under the management of the great Bill Shankly, Smith helped Liverpool dominate for two decades. Smith, who captained the club for three years, was one of the most influential members of the Liverpool team that won the FA Cup for the first time in 1965. Twelve years later, with Bob Paisley at the helm, he would head a crucial goal as Liverpool won their maiden European Cup by defeating Borussia Moenchengladbach in the 1977 final in Rome. In total, Liverpool-born Smith, who grew up in the shadow of Anfield before joining the club he supported as a boy, won the English title four times, the FA Cup twice, the European Cup once and the UEFA Cup twice. Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Smith’s daughter Janette Simpson said: “Dad died very peacefully in his sleep shortly after 4.30pm today. “He had been growing increasingly frail and suffering from a variety of ailments over the last three months especially. We are obviously all devastated.” Smith left Liverpool for Swansea, managed by his old Reds team-mate John Toshack, in 1978, and helped them to promotion from the old Third Division. He received the MBE for services to football and retired from playing in 1979. source: https://www.titiloyeblog.com/2019/04/liverpool-football-legend-tommy-smith.html
