zemaye: Thanks dear Am ROFL Chai na really Gymnastics Do it if it feels good... When peeps ask me hope you are pressing Her with hot water, if you don't press her she will not sleep o! I just say Ah! I dey press Can't argue no strength Honestly I like mixing traditional stuff with all the modern knowledge I get online. My MIL used hot water for me. I totally loved it cos I love massages. It was a free massage twice daily. She'd pay attention to my hands and shoulders (places that could hurt from carrying baby). I love peppersoup so I drank all the possible types made by both mom and MIL. But I rejected pounded yam and pap. I cannot afford to fat. I drank hot water because my sister told me it's the only thing that would make me sweat, with all the after-birth pampering. I used a girdle instead of tying and I love how the tight-stomach feeling forced me into portion control. Suffice to say I got my flat tummy back in 6 weeks, then I started eating anyhow when omugwo finished and now I've put on weight. Honestly traditions I think just want to make your after birth period special like special food, special routine etc. I appreciate all the pampering and i don't envy oyinbo people and those in the diaspora that have to struggle alone immediately after leaving the hospital. I don't mind agreeing to a few empty beliefs to benefit from six weeks of petting o! Besides some things work die. Why should you be suffering cleaning cord endlessly when there's a herb that makes it fall off in 2 days? I massage my baby with hot water because I assume he loves massages like I do. He smiles all through. I bend his arms and legs because my grandma did same for me and i love how flexible I am. That bending is the difference between being able to wash your back, scratch your back, zipper your clothes without assistance, or not. (Abeg if you no sabi no go break your pikin hand o! There's a technique to it). Grandma took care of more than 20 grand children and about 5 great grandchildren before she retired. MIL's mom was a traditional birth attendant. I don't joke with their advice o! As for placebos, I'm guilty as charged. I just hate feeling helpless! I use gripe water (sparingly and not regularly sha). I even put white thread on his head for hiccups when I don't feel like breastfeeding looooool. DH hates that particular one. I'm an ftm and my baby is just 10 weeks, but I've learnt to trust my instincts. Oh and to research endlessly... |

MumZ: Always burp him after breastfeeding b4 putting him down. My 2wks old baby makes d catarrh like noise 2, bt I feel he ll outgrow it soon. I just sprinkle a bit of silverbird oil in his bedsheet n rub some on his clothes 2 clear his airwaves. No visible sign of d catarrh. Bt if u r very worried, u can take him 2 ur pead 2 listen 2 his chest. I did everything for my newborn lo's stuffy nose, even bought expensive saline spray. When the matter got hot (he was crying cos he couldn't sleep) I remembered the traditional remedy: sheabutter. After his bath I rubbed it on his nose, massages his back and chest. The relief was instant and I was able to suction the catarrh out. |

AlphaHandMaiden: In addition to what Onegai has said, it seems you have disposable liners. I have what looks like the type in your picture and i would advise if it is just pee, hand wash it, you will get a longer use out of it. I machine washed a few of mine and it mostly does not survive past one rigorous machine wash, rinse and spin cycle!. All i do is rinse it out and use a squirt of handwash and rinse well.
There are other types that perform miles better and can take 5 or 6 machine washes before you will need to throw away.
If you want to get some search for ULTRA LINERS. They look like a thick roll of kitchen rolls but they are very very durable. Spurnlace liners are also good.
A cloth wipe can be anything you want it to be. From small pieces of towel fabric, to cut up recieving blankets. The ideal thing would be those very thin face towels they share as souvenirs at parties that everyone has a stack off but dont use much... cut them up and use them as wipes. If you have access to a sewing machine or even just needle and thread to hem the edges to prevent excessive fraying. Like how much does a one in all cost? I'm one if those too lazy to research. |

helovesme: Get small ice block and place it on injected area regularly. The ice pack should reduce the sweeping and also ease her discomfort. If there's no improvement within 24hours, take her back to the hospital.
Do NOT massage or rub the injection spot as it might make things worse. I wrapped icecubes inside a thin face towel |

Moboz: Good morning Abeautiful mums, I am new here and urgently needs ur advice. My one month old baby has blocked nostrils I have use silverbird, nasal drop (otrivin) and steam her body. She is neither coughing nor feverish, pls what else can I do. She also have mucor (ipin) coming out of her right eye. Thanks MIL told me the stuffed nose is nothing to worry about, it will clear in time. Traditional explanation is that water entered baby's nose in the womb. Doctor also dismissed my concerns. I've tried suctioning (both with frida and with mouth) but no catarrh coming out. I've just bought saline drops sha, will use tonight. |

inikamoze: Thanks ginibaby, Will try what you suggested. Can't stand seeing the rash on his face, tears my heart apart. I am so loving my new 'status', My head swells when friends and acquaintances call me Papa Kamsi(my son's name). The feeling is ecstatic. I was using coconut oil for my baby initially, then started having rash on the face at about one week so I switched to palm kernel oil. Since then smooth face. I use boots newborn wash but look forward to baby being 6 months so i can switch to a natural soap maybe sheabutter or black soap. The rash is normal and i think proper name is baby acne. Mamas that sabi please when do their gums start itching as per teething things? |

helovesme: fever in a child of any age should not be taken lightly.
this is the reason why doctors/nurses that know that their onions will recommend paracetamol before and after immunisation. at my end, no nurse will administer immunisation at 6weeks without confirmation from the mum that the baby has been given paracetamol. in a case where the mum forgot to do so (which was what happened in my case), the nurse will administer paracetamol herself.
this is because once the fever creeps in, it can be hard to bring it down and what you have is a stressed/panicky mum and a cranky baby. doctors/nurses that recommend 2.5ml of paracetamol have their reasons. its better to use 2.5ml to prevent/stop the fever than use a lower dose and then have to use a stronger drug like neurofen to bring down the fever. I am the type that asks my doctors/nurses questions and this was the plausible explaination i was given to justify the use of paracetamol before and after. they also confirmed that it does not in anyway inhibit the efficiency of the immunisation. the main thing that affects the efficiency of any immunisation jab is how it was stored before use. such injections must be stored at certain temperature. how many hospitals in nigeria actually adhere to this?
in addition to this, i always ask to be shown the immunisation bottle/injection - i check the name and the expiry date to be sure my baby is being given the right thing. although some nurses are proactive and will show you all the labels on the bottle without you asking.
that said, have you checked your baby's temperature using a thermometer? if its still high, take your baby to the hospital.
p.s. Calpol is a brand name of paracetamol just as you have Emzor paracetamol and the likes. Thanks for the explanation. I gave him about 10 mins before the vaccination. Between hospital and house the bottle broke so had to buy another one, hence I have two bottles. Yesterday night was not funny temperature hit 38 hence my switch to manual towel and water method. What really worked was a bath we took by 7am, brought temp down to 36.6. Next time I'll defo demand to see vaccine bottle. |

enkaydewdrop: Good morning mamas... Thanks a lot for your input yesterday... The immunisation went well, I gave him 2.5ml of paracetamol drops immediately after and at night... There was no fever at all, up till now, but he was very cranky, refused to eat, and even vomited once... Thank you so so much... I'm really grateful... God bless you... Aren't you lucky! I'm awake right now battling fever. Have already given three doses of pcm since afternoon, four hours interval. So now I'm down to water and towel. By the way I've bought two diff. bottles of pcm, and they both said 0.4. Pharmacist also instructed 0.4. 2.5 might be effective as per 'kill the pain totally' but I still believe it's overdose except for calpol. |

Very similar to pictures from Afghanistan in the 80's where women were wearing short dresses. |

ritux: My dear, what you just stated above above happens everywhere and even in churches. Your friend was careless to have left her travel kit unattended to. Don't be surprised, that bag must have been stolen by some enlightened folks who are hard-up. You can as well go to somewhere in VI, somewhere in Jos or Enugu and leave your baggage unattended to for 3 mins and if you will find it on return.
I lived and schooled in Warri and I can tell you that all the negative things being said about Warri in this post happens only in about 30% of its land mass. Same way you have some bad places in Lagos, Benin, Owerri, Ibadan etc. Even in Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester, you still have places that you can't dare go at night else those white guys will teach you some nice lessons with knives. Lolz Abeg Warri and Benin no be mate. I be Bini babe, na only Enerhen Junction person don rob me, come stroll comot. Everybody do like dem no see anything. Dat kind rubbish no fit happen even for Oshodi of those days. I love Warri and I gat family there, but the place rough die. Hardcore tins. And the person wey leave handbag waka comot na super mu², anywhere in the world. All this hazard still no reach sha, the fish, starch & banga, bolè, and general sense of humour still make Warri worth all the wahala. Just don't think I can live there. |

Lol, Eruditor is definitely not scoffield. His English is way better. Scoffield sometimes used grammar to gbagaun. Besides this guy has a sense of humour. Scoffield was simply arrogant, Eruditor is simply having fun. And yeah, he talks like a 24yr old. He's a 'Type A' whom age is yet to temper. Eruditor, you've made your point about magic vs miracle. Now please display maturity by being more sensitive to the hopes of others. As Nigerians, hope is most times the only currency we have. Remember, smarts + politics(emotional intelligence)? is the way to the peak. Gillbertoesther: This Eruditor is scolfied with a different account (eruditor).
