hmmm.

Their power source must be mainly in lagos.

It seems to weaken the further they move from there.

My friend told me years ago that they had a confrontation with the military in some other state, and came out the worse for it.

The juju didn't work.

of course my friend could have been lying, I guess. undecided

@ poster,

I don't mean to go over what others have said but the fact remains the fact.Nigeria is our country but how much love has Nigeria for us.
Two weeks ago I lost a friend who left for Nigeria from the States to set up a business. His own relations poisoned him.
If it's not relations,it's armed robbers, the government etc.
The issue is not about going back home but the society, the innate decay, the unwanted progress. Don't get me wrong,I love nigeria but of what good is nigeria to me dead. We'll all die but nobody would want an earlier date.
@ poster get a practice wherever you are;you could always visit Nigeria.
this is what I don't understand about all the badmouthers.

Someone's own relatives poisoned him, the next thing you'll hear is oh its Nigeria that poisoned him.

Why can't people assign blame to the exact source, instead of just generalising all over the place. If there's so much bad blood in someone's family that they're all poisoning each other, what's the connection between what that family is doing to each other and Nigeria as a whole? Is it a person called Nigeria telling them to kill each other? And is there no way of achieving peace in such a family/village/region, but its just easier to place all blame on Nigeria in general?

@ Davidylan: this is the kind of talk which gives people the impression the streets overseas are paved with gold. A Nigerian doctor I know has been practicing in the US for close to 20 years- he's not a millionaire, and in addition, is always in fear of being sued.

Doctors in the US have it very hard during residency- they're paid almost a starving wage, and the so-called 100,000 which they're rumored to make after training, comes with a lot of sweat and insurance premiums. Not to mention US trained doctors often graduate with a mountain of debt from anywhere like 150,000 and upwards, if they're lucky. By the time you pay off your debt, add your monthly bills, etc etc, you'll be surprised at what remains. You might still find yourself with little ready cash, and an avalanche of credit card debt. if you have kids, and want them to go to a good private school, not to mention college, thats another story altogether.

After all the sweat, you make a "good" living, what would be considered middle class or lower. And assuming you're the type who must always show off and compete with the Joneses, then 100,000 is small change compared to your potential debt. undecided  That's why many people resort to illegal activities to make money. because they live above their means.

The OP's best bet is to get certified in Nigeria (since he wants to go home), then look for either private or public service jobs. If he wants to specialize, he can also do that by going for his residency in Nigeria.Things may be hard at first, but with time you learn how to work the system. You just need to get your foot in the door. Many doctors have to work two or more jobs in Nigeria, in order to pay the bills. Locum, etc. Same in most other parts of the world,.

The other option is to attempt the foreign medical boards exams while at home, and if he passes all the steps, try to get a residency overseas. However, as someone pointed out earlier, its also getting harder and harder these days, because employers abroad are getting some pressure about the number of overseas graduates they hire. But never say never.

all these foreigners with a Nigeria/Africa fixation obsession always eager to bash Africans/Nigerians yet can't stay off an African/Nigerian site.

There ought to be a name for this syndrome.

yes, all these names have meaning.

You should ask for the meaning, instead of assuming they have none.

in my culture its not allowed to name a baby after a living person. its like to wish this person death.
that's surprising. Are you Nigerian? which area?

In Nigeria its common to see people named ( insert name here)Junior, after their dad.

In most places, its considered an honor. You hear of people naming their child after the doctor who handled the delivery, etc.

by the way, anywhere you see Chukwu, it only has a meaning in Igbo, to the best of my knowledge.

The topic is actually a sensitive one, as you've probably already guessed from your husband's attitude.

Christianity EtcRe: Whats Your View About Pork (meat From Pig) As A Christian by tpia: 12:52am On Jul 12, 2008
Its not just about whether people can eat pork or not, based on their religious or personal convictions.

Some people can even fight you for that reason alone.

As if its their mouth others are using to eat it.

na wa for zealotry.

Thats why I asked if eating pork is supposed to send the eater to hell, for those who feel its a sin.
Christianity EtcRe: The Bible Says Marrying A Divorcee Is A Sin by tpia: 12:48am On Jul 12, 2008
I'm not too clear about this verse really.

But I think the ancient isrealite males were too quick to divorce their wives for flimsy excuses, so maybe thats the reason behind the verse.

For example, divorcing your wife just because dinner was late, you're in a bad mood, all the kids are girls, etc etc are allegations that shouldnt hold water anywhere.

Divorcees getting married in church- maybe their marriages fell apart because of their or the husband's adultery? don't know.

<<shrugs>>

In any case, the responsibility here is clearly on the husband, which to me is the main point. I stand to be corrected though.
FamilyRe: Woman Revive Husband From Coma With Urine. by tpia: 11:03pm On Jul 11, 2008
Urine contains ammonia. Also found in smelling salts.

Smelling salts are chemical compounds used to arouse consciousness. One such compound is ammonium carbonate, a colorless-to-white, crystalline solid ((NH4)2CO3.H2O).

Smelling salts release toxic ammonia [NH3] gas, which irritates the mucous membranes of the nose and lungs, and thereby triggers an inhalation reflex (that is, it causes the muscles that control breathing to work faster). Even though ammonia gas is considered toxic, smelling salts produce only a small amount.

When placed in water, it is called "aromatic spirits of ammonia."

Ammonium carbonate was formerly known as sal volatile. It was also known as spirit or salt of hartshorn, because ammonia was primarily produced from the antlers of male deer (harts).

Smelling salts are often used on athletes (especially boxers) when they are knocked unconscious.

But what really is the definition of Nollywood or the Origin?
you took the words right out of my mouth.

Hollywood: a city in California, USA.  There's a tree known as Holly which could be the origin of the name.
In any case, Hollywood is an actual geographical location. Wood means forest, as we all know.

Bollywood:  huh huh

Gollywood:  huh huh

Kannywood: huh huh

my own wood na Tollywood. or Tipollywood.

Because as you've all witnessed, I have verbal technique to put obstinant, unruly fools and knuckleheads in their place with class and grace. I leave them thankfully obedient and punished, though their are some grown ass lumps who need a bit more of a beating to smooth over. Some of these miscreants need to be put on time outs from the site for some period of time when they start acting a fool. That CHO whatever chick or dude is first on the list. She/he come in to threads cussing up a storm and cursing out people with foul language for no reason at all.

Bush mentality miscreants need to properly trained the hard way on how to be orderly and civil when communicating in a technical transaction such as the Net, and I have the lesson they need to be learning. I've monitored many sites in the past and have made some important differences in these sites upon doing so. Also there's a growing AA membership on this site and I think it's only right that there's at least one AA mod present for balance.
There's a report to moderator function which you can use to report posts you feel are inappropriate.

About Cho33 and the Abia thread: the cussing out was mutual, not one sided. It takes two to tango.

And there's already an AA moderator, like karmamod mentioned. Uspry1 is a moderator. And she's AA.

Do you really feel you should be a moderator on nairaland given your consistent bias against the Yoruba tribe? Mind you, I would still say this no matter which tribe you were prejudiced against. Its like willywilly asking to be a moderator.

I've gone through some of Uspry's posts and I havent noticed any in which she expresses as much bias against another tribe, the way you do. Even though she seems to have an interest in the Yorubas.
RomanceRe: Does A Broken Home Affect Future Romance? by tpia: 6:42pm On Jul 10, 2008
well, if someone finds a good man or woman, but wants to act uppity and picky for no other reason than because the person is from a broken home or their background isnt up to the required qualifications, karma may still come back to kick you in the behind sha.

Its not even advisable for anyone regardless of background, to enter a relationship with someone so shallow as to judge people based on that. undecided
