tpia,

our fore fathers spoke with divine insight. If you collect all the African proverbs and filter out repetitions across cultures and publish it into a book, you will be looking at a work that will sound like the Bible. God forgive me for that blasphemy, but I said this for a reason. There are people that read the bible literally and then they end up with a lot of logical questions and if your answer is not logical, then they can't understand the message in it. Its the same thing here.

I will end this discussion by referencing Sisi's last proverb in post #24 _

So ki ni oro ol' ogbon - Loosely translated - the wise do not have to make a big production of their words.

as well as her complete response in #26 . Tpia, she said it all for me and i'm done with it.
so am I.

You assume I'm taking the proverb literally. Your own interpretation as you posted it above, is not only literal, but way off the mark.

Holding a live fish by the head or tail, has both a literal and metaphorical meaning, as I pointed out with the insect proverb. The fact that it can be applied literally doesnt mean it cant have a broader application.

And once again, i do not think the proverb applies to eating fish. You are confirming the OP's ridiculous statement that eating fish head is a culture and tradition among Yorubas.  Since they even have proverbs describing the best way to eat fish head. I disagree. Unless its a culture in some parts of Yoruba that I'm not familiar with.

@ Tpia,
I hope you'll never change your position.

@ poster
With all the posts so far you should be in a position to make up your mind.

NAIJA HARD
no one is saying naija is not hard. But naija isnt the only hard place on this planet. Some Nigerians have made it their life's goal to constantly badmouth the place as if that will make other countries where they claim citizenship, like them more.

I have also lived in Nigeria and I know how it is over there.  I know what it is to have fluctuating power supply and bad roads.

But one thing I'm noticing is I don't see other countries attacking their origins the way Nigerians constantly do. Una no dey rest?

What does changing my position have to do with the fact that its not always automatically rosy overseas either. Someone can come here, study for his board exams while doing various burger flipping or toilet cleaning jobs, and still fail them. You're only allowed to sit for the exams a certain number of times. I've seen some doctors study till they're almost wrecked, but still fail. I know others who stopped trying after they got discouraged, and since then ,stuck to odd jobs and abandoned medicine entirely.

Of course many pass the exams and start looking for the highly competitive residency programs which are also becoming tougher and tougher to get into. For those who are lucky and get one, they might have to struggle with the terribly low wages during training while working all kinds of hours and going through various kinds of stress.  especially if they dont have financial support in the form of wife/girlfriend or sibling assistance.

If I now come here and start singing about how easily a doctor will become a millionaire if only they can travel out, who am I fooling and what do I have to gain by it.

yes, doctors can make it big overseas just like they can make it big in Nigeria. But you don't make it big anywhere without stress and hard work. Unless you are a drug courier or 419er.

All this Naija bad overseas good as if folks are reciting Animal farm verbatim, is totally unrealistic.

@ Negro Ntns:

I don't think African proverbs are meant to be interpreted out of context like that.  A wise man holding/grasping a fish head versus a foolish one holding the tail, has nothing to do with the fish being eaten, in my opinion.

The OP is trying to start the tribal bashing that pops up all the time here, hence the dumb topic.  Now its Yoruba like to eat fish head. Afterwards someone else will ask why another tribe eats some other kind of head, then later on it will be about a different tribe that eats head, intestines, horns and hoofs. And so on ad infinitum. undecided

He's watching his "friends" eating fish head, but can't ask them why they like to eat it. Instead he has to open thread about why Yoruba have a culture and tradition of eating fish heads. Yeah right- tell that to the marines. undecided

@ Siskill:

Your point is noted, but the insect eating the vegetable proverb can be either metaphorical or literal. Because plant eating caterpillars and other insects do live on the plants while consuming them.
CultureRe: Yoruba's And Fish Head by tpia: 1:07am On Jul 16, 2008
Negro Ntns, my understanding of that proverb is that a wise person will hold a live fish by the head, while a foolish person will grab it by the tail,  thus letting the fish wriggle out of his grasp.  Its not even as if I'm a stellar Yoruba scholar. undecided Kindly explain what dialect you got your own translation from.

Same logic behind catching a snake- you hold it by the head, not the tail.

I can't believe I'm even posting on this kind of dumb thread.

also explain why it would matter where anyone held a dead cooked fish? Which would also have been sliced into steaks?  I don't know if your translation is tongue in cheek or if you actually believe what you posted.

"My pastor says" is no excuse not to use your common sense.

Unless this Nameless is also enjoying the pastor's advances.

You need to have some more confidence in yourself, so you don't always follow people blindly, be they pastors, boyfriends, teachers, whoever. Separate the good from the bad, even when its a pastor involved.

You got yourself off drugs, etc with the help of your pastor. That doesnt mean the next thing is to fool around with him. Its not even like there's a stable relationship in sight, especially if the pastor is married like folks are saying here. undecided

Assuming the guy is single, at least you could hope for a serious relationship and blame the whole thing on youthful exuberance or something.

Not so in this case.

I don't know why people act like they were suddenly dropped on the continent of Africa and the country of Nigeria from planet Mars.  Have all these tribes never heard of each other before? Ordinary non-scammer Nigerians do seem outnumbered by the crooked ones. Or is it that there's an extremely wide gap between gullible Nigerians and street smart ones, with virtually no middle ground in between?

I dont know why Miss Venezuela won the competition.

A blog somewhere said Miss Egypt slapped her while they were backstage, over some issue. Maybe the way she handled the incident impressed the judges or something. Who knows why she scored so high.

Miss Puerto Rico, and others were far better, going by looks alone.

Miss Ghana is very confident and good looking in a distinctive way, even though she's dark skinned.

same thing with politics. undecided

The Nigerian movie industry needs to look for more stars instead of only promoting the same set of people all the time.

How often do you hear people fighting over western actors and actresses. Some folks like Tom Cruise, others prefer mel Gibson. Some like Lindsay Lohan, others prefer Hillary Duff/Rachel McAdams. Will Smith vs Denzel.

Point is, everyone has their preferences and no need to start attacking someone just because she's not on your list of favorites.

Now that this is all out in the open my wife knows about it and she is standing by me. We have prayed that this bad period should blow over and I already promised God I will never cheat again no matter what my wife does.
She also feels bad because she realises that I would not have lefy home if she did not start the shouting again. We are hoping that we can start our lives anew.
Thanx to those who had harsh words for me because I deserve it. For those who think I should not have gone to marry an uneducated woman I can only say if you meet my son you will not be able to say such a thing again. He is the best boy in the world and I don't think it would have been good to make him a product of a broken home. On the whole I have regrets for going to a woman who is now trying to get me into trouble but I have no regrets for deciding to marry my wife.
I am awaiting a possible court appearance but I don't believe that I can be found guilty of something that I did not do. God is in perfect control.
Its good she's being supportive, since what's done cant be undone. The main thing now is to find a solution to the current problem.

People fight- its no big deal unless the couple wants to make it so.

I think the main issue about your wife's lack of education is you have to go the extra mile in accomodating her, and also get her started in that area. Lack of education is something that can be remedied any time as long as there is commitment. After all, you saw other qualities that made you marry her.

People were criticizing the education aspect because that's how you presented it- as if its something you regret. However, you were most likely just speaking in annoyance. I'm sure by now you're aware when there's marital problems, most times the man will get way more support than the woman. Especially in a Nigerian setting, where the woman will always get the blame regardless if its justified or not. Its what you say about your wife that people will use to attack her.

Anyway, hopefully you'll never experience this kind of trouble again.

Miss Nigeria this year wasnt impressive, in my opinion. Miss Ghana was far better looking, as a matter of fact. Of course beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, but I don't know whats going on with the Nigerian contestants nowadays. Ever since Agbani won, its been mainly downhill. undecided  Having light skin doesnt necessarily mean you're beautiful, really. And on the international stage, light skinned contestants from Africa are at a disadvantage when compared to light skinned blacks in the west. take it or leave it.

Miss USA herself wasnt all that anyway. undecided

I think Miss Jamaica should have been in the top six. She's one of the best looking contestants.

Miss Puerto Rico is also very striking.

Doctors abandon hospitals, take up jobs in telecoms, banks
Muda Oyeniran, Lagos - 14.07.2008

THE brain drain currently plaguing the nation’s health sector may soon worsen as doctors now prefer to take up juicy appointments in the telecommunications and banking sectors of the economy.

Investigation conducted by the Nigerian Tribune has revealed that at least three out of every five graduates of Medicine and Surgery now eye jobs in telecoms companies and banks.

Further investigation showed that those who do not go for jobs in telecoms companies and banks now prefer to set up health-related non-governmental Organisations through which they could earn hard currencies from foreign bodies.

According to Dr Kunle Obagaye, a Senior Registrar and immediate past President, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, the action of the doctors was not unconnected with the poor pay package and condition of service of doctors in the country.

“Some of them have seen many senior doctors and consultants wallowing in poverty and they are just being proactive by going for a less stressful but more financially rewarding career,” he added.

When asked to comment on the issue, the Provost, College of Medicine, Lagos State University, Professor Oladapo Obafunwa, said he was not interested in commenting on it.

“I am not inclined to comment on the issue. Thank you,” he told the Nigerian Tribune.

However, a top official of a new generation bank confirmed to the Nigerian Tribune that the company had many doctors and pharmacists-turned bankers on their payroll, adding that they were doing well on the job
Cuba has 70,000 doctors.

When their borders are opened I'm sure many of them will look for jobs in Nigeria and elsewhere. Some will go to the US, others wont.

Nigeria once hired Cuban physicians en-masse. It can happen again.

I have many friends who are practicing doctors in Nigeria. None of them is a banker, to the best of my knowledge. Some are even refusing to travel abroad, saying they don't want to go through the rigors of starting afresh overseas. Doing odd jobs as cab drivers, burger flippers, and whatnot while trying to passs the foreign boards.

So I don't know where this reporter got his facts from, but to assume every doctor in Nigeria is trying to move into banking, is one heck of a generalization.

And even if some are, so what? Many doctors do plan to go for MBAs and other disciplines even right after graduation.

Doctors can eye other jobs- whats new there. Nurses also change profession if they wish to. Someone i know used to tell me about a teacher in Ibadan back in the 80s who went back to school and became a medical doctor. I personally know another doctor like that, who used to be a teacher.

People will go where the money is.Most people in the US know Sanjay Gupta, on CNN. he's a trained neurosurgeon, but I don't see anyone generalizing about him being a journalist now.

Some of the posters here don't seem to understand that not everyone is about making quick money. Must be a side effect of the get rich quick prosperity gospel which has taken over these days.

Maybe all the 140 million plus Nigerians should up and vacate the country, going by the way some people talk here.

why not try it and see how fast other countries will build new prisons for all of you, as well as dumping your behinds in some desert or back in Nigeria.
