some fellow called jayon was crying and cursing over the thread.

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-152561.0.html

He felt bad that his role models were being questioned rather than worshipped.

A quick check of the guy's general posts here on nairaland, revealed a hypocrite and liar of the highest order.

As is usual with such idolaters, he's more concerned about the reputation of his favorite Men of God, than he is about his own. Na today?

PoliticsRe: What Do We Do About The Nigerian Police? by tpia: 2:44am On Jul 20, 2008
true, the Nigeran police force needs a lot of improvement.

In the meantime, if a police officer asks you to open your wallet, whats the big deal there? You want to prove stubborn over a wallet and risk getting yourself in unnecessary trouble?

am asking because even abroad a police officer can also ask you to empty the contents of your wallet.

these nairaland people sha.

Has anyone here ever heard of SUNDAY ADELAJA. who wasnt able to attend any church for eight or so years, because he was in the Soviet Union where religion was banned.  Today he has a church with over 10,000 members. Am not saying people should stay away from church, but all the fake exorcists and whatnots here, would you rain thunder and lightning on Sunday Adelaja if you'd known him when he wasnt attending church?

Why do people put common sense on the back burner, especially with all the educated Nigerians all over the place?

Christianity EtcRe: Does Religion Have A Purpose? by tpia: 8:34pm On Jul 19, 2008
@ Tasma:
what I asked was if it's possible for a spiritual person to still lack knowledge. What I meant by this is that it's possible for a person to be spiritual and still cause harm from lack of knowledge.
Yes, its very possible to be spiritual but still lack knowledge. A very tragic example is the recent generator mishap where so many people lost their lives because they didnt know the dangers of inadequate ventilation when using a generator.

I'm surprised no one has raised the question yet of why God didnt prevent it from happening- after all, they were all there for a prayer meeting/exorcism/deliverance session. May they RIP.

I dont know of any single recorded instance where Jesus told his followers to abandon common sense for mumbo-jumbo, the way many people here on Nairaland especially, misread, misquote and misyarn whenever they think they have the key to heaven's gate. undecided

Neither is anyone querying why, with all the religiousness in Nigeria, corruption is still so deeply entrenched in the society. People are abusing the civil leaders but crying and cursing whenever their favorite religious figures are queried. Even the ones fleeing the country as a result of poverty, will still insist there's nothing wrong with religion in Nigeria. undecided

PoliticsRe: Who Was The Best President Nigeria Ever/never Had? by tpia: 3:14pm On Jul 19, 2008
I cant even remember the general prices of things without concentrating hard undecided. The only one I seem to recollect is bread @ 50 kobo, then later five naira. 25 kobo candy, N5 coke, I think. And my dad's friend buying a brand new peugeot 504 @ N5000, back in the day.

Inflation is worldwide though. Plenty of people in the US can recall buying gas/fuel at 40 cents a gallon.  Later, after prices rose, filling the tank with $15 or less (at about $2.00 or so pg). Today its $4.00 and above per gallon.

@ topic: the best president Nigeria ever had, hasnt been born, and will never be born. Because no matter what, most Nigerians will never see something good in anything that comes out of Nigeria.

@ fyneguy

the issue is clear - Poverty mentality. If Jesus became poor that I might be rich and I still clung on to poverty, then I had made Him suffer for nothing.

Foreign AffairsRe: African Americans, A Bunch Of Whiners Or Are Their Grievances Justified? by tpia: 2:16pm On Jul 19, 2008
People's views of America/African Americans are influenced by where they live.

Jakumo must have schooled in a majority white area.

And yes, Asians are high achievers in the US. The demographics are very high in all the professional fields. Quite impressive, really.

A lot of AAs are middle to upper class, but a huge number are also lower income. Many Nigerians in the US tend to live among the lower income AAs (ie the Nigerians living in black neighborhoods). So that shapes their views about them.

anyway, I dont know if the complaints are justified or not. AAs and whites are related both by blood and by geography. So there's bound to be disillusionment at some point. Though its not an excuse to blame every single personal frustration on whites.

US.-Based Movement Likens Ellen Govt to Taylor's

A group calling itself the Movement Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) has expressed doubts over the capability of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to effectively deliver where her rival and former dictator did not succeed.

And regardless the level of Ellen's contribution to the mayhem, her association with Charles Taylor has never been in doubt.

That said: Did we not again grasp for straws by electing her as the president? Why would anyone believe that a person so closely associated with Charles Taylor would be right to heal this nation?

The people of Liberia know full well Charles Taylor and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf are directly responsible for the rapes, torture, maiming and murders of more than 400,000 of our friends and loved ones.

Yet Ellen has shown no contrition, compunction or remorse for her contribution, often downplaying the severity of this awful tragedy. Therefore, both these individuals are unacceptable as leaders or role models and will not be rewarded for their crimes.

STATEMENT FOR RELEASE

BY: THE MOVEMENT SOLIDARITY & TRUST FOR A NEW DAY (S.T.A.N.D.)

Despite his impressive win at the polls, Charles Taylor could not and did not revive Liberia as president because this vicious warlord is responsible for the cold-blooded murders of tens of thousands of defenseless civilians. Considering this fact, is it likely that Ellen Johnson Sirleaf - his co-conspirator - could succeed where Charles Taylor has failed? We are doubtful.

Seared in our memory are these haunting words: "He killed my ma, he killed my pa, I'll vote for him." Gripped with fear and grasping for straws, the Liberian people allowed Charles Taylor to become president. As everyone well knows, this only prolonged the misery. And regardless the level of Ellen's contribution to the mayhem, her association with Charles Taylor has never been in doubt. That said; did we not again grasp for straws by electing her as the president? Why would anyone believe that a person so closely associated with Charles Taylor would be right to heal this nation?

The people of Liberia know full well Charles Taylor and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf are directly responsible for the rapes, torture, maiming and murders of more than 400,000 of our friends and loved ones. Yet Ellen has shown no contrition, compunction or remorse for her contribution, often downplaying the severity of this awful tragedy. Therefore, both these individuals are unacceptable as leaders or role models and will not be rewarded for their crimes. The people of Liberia rejected Charles Taylor primarily because he murdered our fellow compatriots and wrecked the country's entire infrastructure. This explains why in the fourth year of his presidency, he finally faced the people's wrath, barely escaping alive.

The people have also rejected Ellen Johnson Sirleaf because she financed the brutal war that destroyed a generation, impoverished the entire population, decimated families, and turned Liberians into refugees and beggars. Ordering the NPFL rebels to bomb the residents of Monrovia is unpardonable. The question now is not if, but when will Ellen face the wrath of the Liberian people? Though the date may be unknown, the emotions are certain.

Feeling neglected and abandoned, the people of Liberia gathered their anger and dealt decisively with a grave injustice which many had conveniently ignored. This lesson must not be overlooked. The anger which led to the tumultuous events of 2003 still burns deep in the millions whose lives were disrupted by the actions of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Charles Taylor. But again we wait patiently, hoping and trusting that people of conscience will address this grievous injustice in the interest of peace. We're hoping our international partners realize if Charles Taylor could not restore peace to this nation, neither can Ellen.

It is difficult to say with any degree of certainty when their penned-up anger will eventually erupt into a violent rage. However, one thing is certain: a large segment of the population believes Ellen in large part is responsible for their hurt, pain, grief and loss. Without justice being served, it will be difficult if not impossible for these individuals to forgive and forget; especially when Ellen continues to rekindle negative emotions by mishandling post-war reconstruction.
here's another complaint from a Zimbabwean woman:

The Liberian leader also makes it look like Liberia ran the best election after the brutal civil war. According to a report by the Carter Centre and the National Democratic Institute, "One of the most significant complaints was brought by the Liberty Party, on behalf of presidential aspirant Charles Brumskine, who came in third place in the presidential race.

"In a statement issued on October 18, 2005, the Liberty Party alleged that 'at least three aspects of the electoral process, namely ballot marking by illiterate voters, the counting of the votes, and the reporting of the votes counted, have been marred by serious irregularities, bordering on fraud'.

"The Liberty Party contended that many illiterate voters who requested help from poll workers were guided to mark areas on the ballot that did not reflect the voters' choice."

Today, the "international community" toasts the Liberian leader and berates Zimbabwe. But I would like to say to Zimbabweans: Keep on keeping on. After all, prescriptions are easier to make than clinical diagnoses.

Zimbabwe is not Liberia, just like it is not Kenya. And it is the will of Zimbabweans, not Sirleaf-Johnson's, that shall carry the day.
