dnative: go back and do more research and come and back and tell us how barack means mubarak.
surely i dont need to spell it out to you?

barack has its origins in the semitic form baruch or mubarak.

you can say its an africanized version but you need to pull up more evidence if you say it has an african root.

in yoruba, its alubarika, but everyone knows it still has an arab root?

not sure why nlers [or is it people] are always asking if they can date outside their compatibility zone.

what's wrong with sticking to what you're used to when dating?

tintingz: Op go and ask bankole willington a.k.a banky w why him papa still dey bear wilington Or ask bukky wright huh
they both seem to be mixed though.

You may be right but there are no conclusive evidence that they are Yoruba/Nigerian either. They were returnee ex slaves via Sierra- Leone to NIgeria as missionaries. Most returnee ex slave immigrants tried a little too hard to ingratiate themselves with the "Locals" by making spurious claims about their identities/origins
most of them knew their origins [eg herbert macauley], but they could not settle there because the home environments were not conducive to their return. So they settled majorly in lagos.

as per the english names, some of them were mixed while others just preferred a break from the old ones, which were affiliated with various deities.

I actually like the ethnic version of arab names, maybe because i'm in diaspora, not sure.

And come to think of it, even hausas do have similar formats on occasion, like ahmadu for ahmad.

bukatyne: The OP never said Arabic names are bad; He said they should be middle names and not first names.
Tribe is very important to the arab identity, i doubt arabs themselves would have a problem with it. Its usually immigrants or new converts who would switch to exclusively arabic names in that manner at the expense of tribe. Could be wrong but thats what i think.

Hausas typically have exclusively arab names but thats because they are mixed with arab and are considered araboid.

Sometimes we should avoid thinking we know better than our forefathers- could be true in some areas, but not all.

This is a very interesting topic.

To the best of my knowledge, yoruba muslim names typically are an ethnic version of the arab form.

Eg adding a vowel at the end of the name.

So you'd have muina/ muinatu for muinat, abdulahi for ab'dulah, rashidi for rasheed, etc etc.

However, it seems such names might have been considered "uncool" and possibly seen as used by "poor" or uneducated people, hence the shift towards the "less vernacular" type with a stricter arab spelling, commonly used by hausas.

try having some of your babies in nigeria.

if you think having US citizenship means a child will have an easy life or some fringe benefits in the USA, think again.

tell lie o, tell truth o, doesnt matter at the end of the day.
