few misconceptions about "local":

1. It is limited to region.

This is not quite true. While being local may indeed seem more pronounced in some areas, people with local mindset can be found anywhere, even in the most "sophisticated" setting. This is what gave rise to the expression "money cant buy class" and its variants.

There are local people who have class, and "sophisticated" people who totally lack it.



2. Local is permanent.

No its not. If you make conscious efforts to improve/modify your worldview and behaviour, you will probably not be considered local so much.
Lack of adaptation skills, or low adaptation skills, also contribute to local behaviour, so if you broaden your mind, it goes a long way in changing the perception you are local.


3. If you are from a local background, you will be local.

well, this is to a large extent, true. However, as pointed out before, when you make a conscious effort to adjust your behaviour and inculcate non local mindset, you can largely overcome whatever limitations were imposed by your background.

4. Local people are always talking (yapping).

maybe.

However, not being talkative doesnt always mean someone is not local.

i for one dont believe "local" is impossible to modify, we all have to start from somewhere.

In places like the US, many apartments and homes come with a dishwasher already installed so its relatively commonplace and not viewed as a luxury.

in nigeria, many items which overseas are considered standard place, or basic ,, are still thought of as priviledges and mostly for the rich.

I doubt nigeria still has manhood initiation rites ( except for the fulani) although it might have been more common in times past.


I wouldn't consider any of the cults manhood initiation per se because in the rites I read about in african traditional societies, it had to do with the individual proving bravery, adaptation skills ( in the wild, etc), and responsibility. Not necessarily with physical fighting although I could be wrong.

why do nigerian celebrities like white furniture?

circumcision is considered a rite of manhood in some societies but only if its performed at a later age.

manhood rites/rituals are supposed to mark the point at which the child is expected to become a man.

i remember the count, the lady [or man] who was always painting numbers on things, the haberdasher [dont know what he's called, he usually has something to sell which turns out to be numbers], what else now.


the recent sesame street is now more international i think.

There should be same standard for everyone. If a man thinks washing machine makes his wife lazy then he should also consider a car as a machine for lazy men then trek anywhere he goes too

My apologies for the previous reference. However, i beg to differ, i am not talking about suffering people i have seen men who will buy the latest gadgets yet hold on to archaic views even when their wives can afford it themselves the women have to do strong head and buy the items themselves and meet strong resistance from their husbands who insist of doing it the local way.

I respect hard work so saying i look on suffering is not what am doing

whatever works for each household.

washing machine did not use to be a staple in nigeria- its a recent appliance so of course not everyone will be used to it.

personally, i prefer washing clothes by hand if the laundry is not too much. Back home in nigeria it was fun.

and drying the clothes in fresh air outside is also good.

However, one must adapt with the times hence most nigerians do their laundry via machine which btw is configured for lord knows what, not only washing.

although it seems nigeria has hand or battery powered washers?

as for yam pounder- the one pounded by hand tastes better.
