A suspected drunk driver has hit the official car of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai. Lucky man, he was not in the car!
The Nigerian army reported on its Twitter handle that the accident occurred at Jere town, Kaduna state.
It said the car, in a convoy, was on the way to Kaduna at about 6.00 p.m. on Sunday when the accident happened, as a lone civilian vehicle veered off its lane and rammed into the staff car.
“The COAS was not in the car. However, the ADC sustained minor injuries and has been evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
“The driver of the civilian car that rammed into the convoy of the COAS is presently receiving medical attention at a NA Medical facility. Case has been reported to Police and Investigation has commenced. Initial findings showed driver was under the influence of alcohol”, the army tweeted this morning.

Some seven hundred and forty-seven thousand, eight hundred and fifty-three females are among the 1,090,233 people on Anti-Retroviral (ARV) treatment in Nigeria by June, National Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, says.
In a statement to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, Mr Greg Ashefor, the Acting Director, Research Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate, in Abuja on Friday, added that 342, 380 males were also on ARV treatment.
According to the figure the females are 68.59. approximately 70 per cent of the list while the number of males on the list are about 31.14 per cent.
He said the number included all persons on treatment programmes supported by the U.S Government (PEPFAR), Global Fund, and the Federal Government.
Ashefor further said that the Federal Government programme covered 62, 120 persons on treatment, with 44,116 persons in Taraba and 17,904 persons in Abia.
Earlier, in an interview, Ashefor had said that the Federal Government was planning to include an additional 50,000 people from Taraba and Abia to receive treatment.
According to him, about 76,000 people are currently on treatment in Taraba and Abia for which the government is solely responsible.
“The government has a scale-up plan, called fast-track plan to actually put more people on drugs.
“There are other interventions going on. The partners are also doing test and treatment in collaboration with the government.
Ashefor said, however, that there was still a huge gap in terms of data management.

The Nigerian Army said the situation at Katarko in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe had been brought under control after troops foiled terrorists attempted attack on the military location in the town.
The army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Texas Chukwu in a statement on Thursday said that the troops immediately swung into action following a tip off and pushed the terrorists backward with superior fire power.

He, however, said some of the terrorists escaped into nearby bushes but efforts were on to get them, adding that the troops were currently embarking on clearance patrol in the area.

Chukwu urged Yobe residents in general and Katarko in particular, to go about their legitimate businesses and report any suspicious activities or movement in their area to the law enforcement agents for prompt action.

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti on Thursday ordered the immediate cancellation of the allocation of over 800 shops at the multi-billion naira new Oja Oba Market in Ado Ekiti.
The cancellation of the shop allocations was conveyed via a statement in Ado-Ekiti by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, which said that the action followed Fayemi’s inspection of the facilities of the market earlier in the week.
News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the market, which is adjacent to the palace of the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo, was reconstructed after the demolition of the old market which was razed by fire about three years ago.
However, construction works at the new market — the largest in the state – had reached about 80 per cent completion when the tenure of former Gov. Ayodele Fayose ended last month.
NAN also reports that the hurried allocation of the shops to subscribers by the Fayose-administration then generated some controversies, as some residents, including traditional chiefs, alleged bias in the manner in which the shops were allocated.
“It has been discovered that the market complex is not ready for use.
“A structural evaluation of the complex shows that some considerable construction works are required to fix the inherent structural defects which have made the buildings unsafe for use.
“As this process would take some time, the governor has, therefore, directed that the process of allocation of
shops be stopped immediately.
“The governor also directed that all subscribers with proofs of payment for shops in the market should be
refunded.
“The ministries of works and commerce have consequently been ordered to work out a seamless arrangement for the market’s completion and allocation,’’ the statement added.

A 35-year-old mother of two is currently being investigated by Operatives of the Gender Unit of Lagos State Police Command for allegedly locking her housemaid inside a toilet, before leaving for church.

It was gathered that a neighbour, who felt concerned about the ordeal of the 14-year-old maid, reported to the Police, who broke the toilet door to rescue her.

Neighbour’s account

According to the concerned neighbour (names withheld), “I had to report the poor maid’s ordeal to the Police as this abuse became a recurrent thing.

She is in the habit of beating the maid and locking her in the toilet any time she was going out.”

Vanguard gathered that based on the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ipaja Police Station, visited the house at Baruwa Estate and forced the door open to rescue the victim before the case was transferred to the Gender Unit.

The maid’s story

After her rescue the maid, who had injuries all over her body, said: “Since I started living with madam, anytime she goes out, she locks me up inside the toilet. She beats me all the time.”

Denying the allegation, the suspect, Mabel Okechukwu, said she locked up the victim in the toilet for refusing to follow her to church.

Her words: “On the fateful day of the incident, when we woke up I asked her to prepare so that we can get to church early, but she stayed in the toilet doing something else.

“After waiting for her for a while, I went into the toilet to check her only to see her doing some irrelevant things. Out of annoyance, I spanked her for avoiding going to church.

“In order to punish her for her action, I locked her inside the toilet and went to church. It was when I came back from church that I was told my neighbour reported the incident at Ipaja Police Station.

“I was told that Police broke the door to bring her out of the toilet.”

Similarly, the Command Gender Unit is investigating a case of defilement against one Nigerien national, who allegedly inserted his fingers into the private part of a 10-year-old girl. It was gathered that a concerned resident, who saw bloodstains around the girl’s genital reported the matter to the Police.

Reacting to the suspects’ arrest, Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, said that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as the investigations are concluded.

He was said to have been newly posted from the FRCN Training School located in Shogunle to the Broadcasting House in Ikoyi, Lagos. Explaining what transpired shortly before the suicide, Ikechukwu in a chat with Punch said there was light traffic along UNILAG waterfront end of the Third Mainland bridge as a result of a vehicle that broke down on the road.
He said, “we were on Third Mainland Bridge after the UNILAG Waterfront about 9am. I was behind the brown Toyota Corolla 2001 model where the man was. There were three people inside the car, the driver and a woman sitting in the front. The man sat at the back. There was a faulty vehicle on the road, so we all had to reduce our speed.
I noticed the car (the Toyota Corolla) in front of me slowed down, and the man jumped out in front my car. I thought their car was over-flooding and he wanted to call the attention of the fishermen to help them with water or he wanted to urinate. But the next thing I saw was that the tall man climbed the culvert. He wore a grey shirt with brown trousers and a cap.
The man wore a very desperate look. He should be in his late 40s. My wife and I were looking at him as he held the railings and jumped into the water, head-first. I parked immediately and disembarked from my car. The driver of the Toyota Corolla also came down. We could not see any trace of his body because the water was calm.”

President Muhammadu on Tuesday, October 30, said that he is closely monitoring the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) as violence is growing more rampant in the country.
He urged the force to remain vigilant and dogged in securing communities and prosecuting criminal offences, Punch reports.
The president: “The Nigerian Police are in the frontline of securing communities. For the judiciary, unless the investigations are credible and rapidly done, there is nothing they can do. From now on, the Nigeria police, you better watch it, I am going to watch you closely.”
Buhari said that he would not sit and watch those perpetuating killings in parts of Kaduna State to go scot-free.
Buhari made the comments during a condolence visit to Kaduna state. According to a statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the president expressed sadness over the loss of lives and property in Kasuwan Magani and around Kaduna metropolis.
He stated: “If in the past, they (perpetrators of violence) got away scot-free, we shall now hold everyone to account for these latest killings.
“It is unacceptable that criminal elements can visit on citizens the wanton killings recorded in the Kasuwan Magani incident of October 18, 2018 and the unrest around Kaduna metropolis a few days later. This must stop.”
Buhari also appealed to community leaders including ward heads, village heads and traditional rulers to be closer to their people, urging them not to shield those planning to wreak havoc on the community from law enforcement agencies.

He also paid tribute to the late Agom Adara, Maiwada Galadima, praising the traditional ruler of Adara chiefdom for serving his community and the state with dedication.

“On their part, citizens also have a duty to be law-abiding in their conduct and within their communities.
“There is a need to avoid violence as a tool of negotiation or obtaining advantage, and learn to listen to each other and commit to resolving differences through peaceful means.
“The federal security agencies will hunt and prosecute all those who sponsored these acts of violence,” he said.

Concerning the recent murder of Saudi journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, inside the nation's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, Buhari said that while the entire globe is aware of what is happening, the situation in Kaduna has not attracted any attention.
The president said: “I observed that more than 75 people were killed in Kaduna alone and I haven’t seen anything about it. It means we are pushing ourselves as a nation and a people towards irrelevance, seen by the world itself.’’
