Politics / Re: Bode George Arrested By EFCC by Truequest(m): 5:41pm On Aug 08, 2008
Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (South), Chief Olabode George, was brought to the High Court in Ikeja, this morning, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged N84 billion fraud perpetrated while he was the chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Board.

However, the case was not heard as the judges, including the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Ade Alabi, are on vacation. As at press time, learnt that the case had not been formally assigned to any judge by the Chief Judge.

We gathered that the matter would eventually be heard by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole. Meanwhile, chieftains of PDP and supporters of Bode George started arriving in the court premises at about 9.00 a.m. Among the PDP chieftains present in court were Femi Lanlehin, Wahab Owokoniran, Honourable Tunde Salau, Aina Tugbobo and Muyiwa Collins

Bode George, it would be recalled, dragged TheNEWS magazine to court for its publication in April 2005, alleging fraud and irregularities in the award of contracts under his watch as chairman of the NPA board.

During one of the proceedings of the N500 million libel suit filed against Independent Communications Network Limited (ICNL), publishers of TheNEWS/P.M.News, at an Ikeja High Court, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) testified against him (George) making startling revelations on how, as chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), George awarded 24,252 contracts in breach of Federal Government rules.

The investigating officer, Mr. Bamanga Bello, revealed these facts in a written statement on oath, which he adopted in the court during the hearing of the suit on 6 December, 2007.

George claimed that TheNEWS damaged his reputation in one of its cover stories detailing fraud in the NPA, amounting to N85bn.

He joined as co-defendants in the suit, the Editor-In-Chief of the TheNEWS, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, and Mr. Ademola Adegbamigbe.

But while testifying in the suit, Bello, who was in court to represent the chairman of EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, told the judge that George acted illegally in approving the said contracts.

The Federal Government had set up a committee to verify NPA’s contracts between 2001 and 2003 when George was the chairman of the NPA Board. Bello represented Ribadu in the committee.

Led in evidence by defence counsel, Mr. Femi Falana, Bello told Presiding Justice Akeem Oshodi that the 24,252 contracts awarded during George’s tenure as NPA Chairman were worth N100bn.

He averred that only the Ministerial Tenders Board or the Federal Executive Council had powers to approve the contracts which George unilaterally awarded.

Bello added that contracts awarded during George’s tenure were inflated. Such act, Bello said, ran contrary to sections 516 and 390 of the Criminal Code and Section 22(3) of the ICPC Act of 2000.

George, he also disclosed, went away with four vehicles belonging to the NPA when he left office. He said this prompted the EFCC to write him (George) and that it was after he received the letter that he returned the vehicles.

The EFCC investigating officer told the court that the contracts awarded by George were not budgeted for contrary to Section 22(4) of the ICPC Act. The special committee set up by former President Obasanjo was chaired by Ribadu who handed a report to the former leader in February, 2006. While handing over the report, Ribadu noted with disdain discoveries by the committee, including financial recklessness, violation of existing regulations in the award of contracts and excessive contracts spinning, all during the tenure of George as chairman of the NPA Board.

The committee made strong recommendations to the government to recover the misappropriated funds, make structural and administrative changes in the NPA to forestall a future colossal mismanagement and fraud.

Obasanjo, while receiving the report, commended members of the committee and promised to look into its recommendations with a view to making it a guide in taking future decisions. He promised to also look into the cases of NPA creditors. The committee’s report was tendered in court by Bello and the judge admitted it as evidence.

However, on Wednesday 30 January, when the matter again came up for hearing, thugs and supporters of the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman (South) went wild in the High Court premises and attacked the Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief of TheNEWS, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who was about leaving the court premises in his car.

His attempt to draw the attention of security personnel to the action of the thugs led to his being slapped by one of the thugs, while others poured sand on him. It is believed that the thugs acted this way because the libel case appeared to be slipping out of George’s hands.

It would be recalled that George, at a press conference, denied that he acted like an executive chairman of the NPA, claiming that he never awarded contracts. He even claimed he blew the whistle on the monstrous fraud at the authority! But the minutes of a meeting chaired by George, which the EFCC presented in court indicated he presided over the award of contracts.

It was reported that Chief Bode George has been arrested by the EFCC.
He was arrested this morning in his Asokoro home in Abuja.

Erstwhile National Vice Chairman (South) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former chairman of the Board of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Olabode George, was picked up from his Asokoro, Abuja, home, in the early hours of today, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

When our reporter contacted the spokesman of the EFCC, Mr. Femi Babafemi, he confirmed the arrest. According to Babafemi, “Bode George was arrested this morning, following his return from an overseas trip in connection with the investigation by the anti-graft body of his tenure as chairman of the NPA board.

George had boasted last weekend upon his return from overseas trip that nobody could arrest him and that he was not wanted by any anti-corruption agency.

I am not suprised at your comment. But surely you sound more inteeligent than that Governor Nyarko not minding whether or not he has been a Naval or Airman officer. Most in the The Nigerian Armed forces including officers got to where they are historically because of contacts and connections.

I will let ordinary folks on this forum try to listen to that Governor from Adamawa, you will be shocked. A friend actually calls me yesterday at this Northern Governors meeting on AIT. He should have been speaking his local dialects rather than English. He is pathethic, infact an illiterate and quite frankly a disgrace to Nigeria. If that is your Governor that makes you an idiot for calling southerners idiot

Compare that to Aliyu banbangida, he doesn't speak Queens English but very coherent, intelligent and thoughtful. Although I am not surprised because he went to proper school and got a PHD.

For the North to progress, you need a lot of Aliyu babangida- Niger state Governor.

You will find that your comment is the one that is stupid once you have the opportunity to watch Gov. Nyarko speaks like a drunkard. He is the one with  2 'first ladies' attending diffrent functions.

That smarts isn't it.
***
Vigasimple,

unfortnately your reply makes me believe (by your own criteria) that you are pathetic, speak like a drunkard and should be speaking your local dialect rather than English. your english in that reply simply cannot be judged by any to be up to standard.

if you knew anything about the armed forces, you would know that no kind of connection would get you to the most senior rank. secondly, Nyako joined the military long before Nigeria succrumbed to the politics of 'i know who'. (At this point i would also like to add that you and everyone in your town only got your jobs because of connections,  see how silly that sounds?)

what, i have to say, i have always found curious about southerners is their belief that one's ability to speak english is somehow a determinant of their ability to govern or even prosper in life (now, that really IS the definition of pathetic).

you speak so highly of the Niger state governor, do you realise that about two months ago he awarded Nyako with the highest award bestowable by a state governor for Nyako's 'outstandable performance as a former governor of Niger state'?

Nyako does not speak english so your 'super-charged, southern intelligent brain' could never comprehend that.

But remember my friend, those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. when you learn that 'very coherent, intelligent and thoughtful' way of speaking english after you attend 'proper school and get a PHD' come back here and critisize.

In the mean time, can you please tell us what makes Nyako a bad governor rather than why his english is such a disgrace to this country?

(by the way, i have heard him speak english several times on TV and other than his very thick fulani accent, it sounded a HELL of a lot better than yours,  no offence meant). not that it was (or would ever be) my criteria for voting in a governor.

I honestly appreciate your thought pattern, and that goes to affirm that you are one of the emerging brains in the North. Some of my southern brothers either because of their lack of exposure tend to believe that the definition of intelligence is southern. I can say authoritatively that brilliant minds abound in every corner of this nation. Sadly, because of our pride most of our southern brother are guilty of the same 'sin'.

Mind advice let all us {I mean younger generation} begin to demand our right from our leaders north or south. I can tell you that the size of the revenue is not the issue but prudent management.

I think this will do someone some good:

THIS IS A NEW ONE.

PLEASE BE GUIDED AND ENLIGHTEN OUR CUSTOMERS, FRIENDS AND RELATIVES,  ,  ,  ,

This seems like the latest trend being used by ATM fraudsters to swindle their unsuspecting victims.

One of our customers just complained yesterday evening that he received a text message from GLOMOBILE with their Logo informing him of  his recent winning of their N1,000,000 cash promo. He was further asked to call the number 08057276992 for  further  clarifications. When he did, he was asked the banks he has accounts with and whether those accounts are tied to ATMs.

He told them that his INTERCONTINENTAL BANK and DIAMOND BANK accounts enjoy ATM facilities and he was then asked
to go straight to any UBA ATM to key in some 19-digit numbers in the TEST FUND option on the ATM machine after he had inserted
his card and keyed in his PIN. He did this for his 2 a/cs  as above and according to him, after keying in the 19-digit numbers and pressing enter, the ATM prompted back the 19-digit number and 6015 for DBPLC card and 2013 for ICB card. The fraudsters confirmed to him that they have confirmed his ownership of the the 2 a/cs and asked him to check his a/c balances in the next 3 hours to confirm that the N1,000,000 has been paid online into his account.

Unfortunately, by the time he checked after 3 hours, his previous balance in the 2 a/cs have been swept. He has reported to  GLOMOBILE. We have also hotlisted his DB card.

We really need to advice our customers accordingly as in this instance, the customer’s conviction was that the text was sent from GLO not any other number and how these fraudsters have been able to penetrate the GLOMOBILE network such that a text sent from them and sent via the GLO network still shows GLO as the sender remains a mystery for now.

THIS IS A NEW IDEA THIS PEOPLE WILL NEVER STOP. PLEASE LETS PASS THIS INFORMATION. TO OUR CUSTOMERS ,FRIENDS AND RELATIVES.

Wave making musician, D’banj, is one of the hottest musicians in the country today. The crooner seems to have a lot of fans and followers who would give an arm and, even, two legs to touch him.

Everywhere he goes, it seems as if the Koko master is always drawing attention. And indeed, the crooner drew more than enough attention in Lagos recently during a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Riwan Akiolu.

As D’banj was leaving the palace, fans were already waiting for him. They didn’t give him a breather at all.

Probably to identify with them and to appreciate their love, D’banj stood in his chauffeur driven jeep and brought out his head from the open roof car.

The crowd almost ate him raw, but the crooner didn’t seem to mind as he started distributing his CDs to the over excited crowd.

But even as some people wanted to get a copy of the CD, more of them wanted to help themselves to the expensive accessories the crooner adorned himself with.

The crowd intensified, D’banj kept sharing his Cds. It was not up until his expensive designer sunglasses was snatched off his face that the crooner stopped being ‘Father Chritmas.’

“Wey my glasses? They have taken my glasses!” Was all he could say as one of the passengers of the jeep quickly pulled him down and they zoomed off

Politics / Oba Of Oyinlola’s Town Robbed Of Cash, Property Worth N1bn by Truequest(m): 8:44pm On Jul 26, 2008
Armed robbers invaded the palace of the paramount ruler of Okuku community in Odo-Otin area of Osun State, Oba Oyebode Oluronke II, early on Friday, carting away property valued at over N1 billion.

The attack underscored a rise in the number of attacks on monarchs in the state as some palaces, which included that of the Olobaagun of Obaagun in Ifelodun Local Government Area, have been attacked lately. It was gathered that the king was wounded on the hand during the attack, even as he was said to be receiving medical treatment when our correspondent visited the palace on Friday.

The Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who is from one of the royal families of Okuku, has promised an undisclosed reward for anyone with information that could help track down the invaders. Oyinlola, who spoke through his Special Assistant and Chief Press Secretary, Mr Lasisi Olagunju, described the attack as unfortunate. Oluronke, who expressed shock over the attack, said the value of the cash and properties stolen by the hoodlums was above N1 billion.

A palace source told our correspondent that the robbers, numbering 12, gained access into the palace through the gate and a window in the toilet overlooking the road. It was gathered that the hoodlums tied the security guards at the gates before storming the king’s apartment, where they carted his staff of office, traditional costumes, 10 beaded crowns, ancient beads, feathers, cowries, and several other artefacts. Two new cars belonging to the king were stolen by the hoodlums but one of them, a Toyota Camry, was recovered in neighbouring Inisa after the car’s security device had immobilised it.

The police have taken custody of the car, which was recovered at the Railway Crossing in Inisa, on Friday morning. An indigene, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “They (armed robbers) came in a convoy of four vehicles. After gaining entry into the king’s apartment, the robbers descended on all the artefacts in sight. They stole the ancient robe worn by Okuku kings during coronation. We, indigenes, have decided to invoke the spirit of our forebearers on the robbers because they have come to desecrate our land. They shall all perish in seven days. The robbers came around 2.30a.m and they operated for more than an hour before they left the palace and headed for the Inisa – Ikirun route.”

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State Command, Mr Joshua Olayemi, said no suspect had been arrested but assured that detectives were working round the clock to track down the robbers. It was gathered that the attack on the Olokuku had sent fears into the circle of traditional rulers in the state.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested by the police at Idimu, for allegedly sleeping with his 16-year-old daughter for three years.

Politics / Re: Soludo Slams Northern Leaders Over Poverty by Truequest(m): 3:50pm On Jul 23, 2008
This is the full text of the publication emphasis on the part not included earlier

Central Bank (CBN) Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has blamed northern elites and their leaders for the crippling poverty ravaging the northern states, just as the Minister for Special Duties, Elder Godsday Orubebe, said that the problem in the Niger Delta should be blamed on lack of political will on the part of past leaders.
Prof Soludo, who spoke while delivering a lecture entitled "Banking Reforms in Nigeria" at the 2008 Arewa Inspirational Leadership award in Kaduna yesterday said that with the level of affluence in the north, the region has no reason to lag behind other parts of the country in terms of developmental efforts.

He said that the lack of interest displayed by northern elites towards the socio-economic development of the region is largely responsible for the "crippling poverty" and acute under development in the area.

The CBN governor, whose utterances drew loud applause from the audience at the lecture, argued that this lackadaisical attitude of the Northern elites and their lack of interest towards investing in viable economic ventures is responsible for the region trailing others in almost every aspect of life.

He said Nigeria has become a Northern phenomenon as each of the 19 states in the region exhibited incidences of poverty ranging between 60 and 95 percent, adding that the crippling poverty in the region had assumed the dimension of a national crisis just like the problems in the oil-rich but troubled Niger Delta region.

He stressed that only an inclusive developmental process in which the North could compete favourably with the other parts of the country on the same pedestal would ensure that Nigeria realized its dream of being part of the 20 largest economies in the world by the year 2020.

While urging Northern elites to pick up the challenge by striving to bring the region to same level of development with other parts of the country, he also asked them to pull resources together to enhance development in the north.

"You’ll realize that I have not talked about banking sector but just one last word on that. I will not talk about the universal, national or global bank. Within this hall, I can see some members of the elite from the North and I throw this as a challenge.

"The poverty in your respective villages, what have you done about it? How many micro-finance banks have you set up in your states? Don’t say it’s N25billion, it’s just N20million.

"With N20million, you set up one microfinance bank and this can empower hundreds of people within your community. What I do say to people when they approach me and talk about banks, I ask the person, first do you have a microfinance bank in your village? N20million is all it takes.

"You mobilize other people around, not only one person. But if you want to set it up alone, you can. I know there are people who can bring say about one billion naira and set up microfinance banks with branches throughout the state.

. "But if you put together about 12 to 15 states in the North, they are not up to a number that you find in one state in the South. There is something that is in that for you the elite.

"We must take the issue of poverty reduction very seriously. Government can only do little but the bulk of it remains with the rest of us, the elites.

"There is probably no better time for us to declare, if you like, I don’t want to call it an emergency, but to say that we really need to focus attention on the Northern economy.

"I’ve said this because if you look at the entire country, by the last census, if you put the entire North together, it constitutes over 50 per cent or thereabout, a higher percentage of people because development is about people.

"But if you look at all the indications of development, what constitutes today the North seems to be lagging far behind that the gaps seem to have even widened.

"I have also listened to the presentation on the Niger Delta which is a major national challenge but permit me to argue that crippling poverty in the North is as much a national crisis as that of the Niger Delta.," Soludo said

In his remarks, the Minister of Special Duties, Elder Godsday Orubebe blame the nation’s past leaders for the rising crisis in the Niger Delta.

He said the current crisis in the Niger Delta got to the worsening level it was now due to the lack of political will on the part of the past leadership of the country to frontally tackle the problem and address the agitations of the people of the area.

Also speaking, former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu wants more allocation to Lagos state from the federation account, as the most populated state in the country to enable her cope with the challenges imposed on it by such a situation.

Executive Director of the Northern Development Initiative (NDI) organisers of the lecture, Abdul Ahmed Isiaq said that it purpose for organizing the lecture/ awards was "informed by a deep sense of history, a balance view of the present and a clear perspective of what the future ought to be."

Guys this is not about anybody being afriad of anybody

Soludo has been under attack from all those who want to oust him by all means merely because he is doing his job right. Now that they are having difficulties beating him down professionally, they have resolved to misconstrue what Soludo said that was rather an honest economic statement to have ethinic connotations.

And unfortunately people are simply fanning the flames that makes this cladenstine objective worthwhile. The current administration is a northern administration. Pitting Soludo against the North might just be very effective at removing him from office, this is what this is all about.

I don't think that was the motive of the report, but the way the nation is going today is unfortunate.
Today's leadership of the nation is disheartening or how can you explain our out put as a nation when
compared to the number of intellectual the nation has produced.

On Soludo his major sins against the North are: Bank Consolidation, Removal of Arabic on our currency
and replacing it with local languages. These I think were job related are for over all national interest.

Three students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, have been arrested by detectives of the Nigeria Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU), Milverton Road, Ikoyi.

•Timothy Ehimea

They allegedly withdrew about N34 million fraudulently from a People’s Bank account through the automated teller machine (ATM). The fraud was detected at the Benin branch of Access Bank Nigeria Plc.
The principal suspect is 20-year-old Timothy Ehimea, a part-time student of Science Laboratory Technology at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State.
Other suspects are, Ighodaro Osahon, 22, Electrical Engineering and George Osagale, 24, a Geography and Physical Planning final year student.
They are all childhood friends who hail from Esan in Edo State.
According to a source at SFU, “We received a strongly worded petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police in charge of SFU, Mr. Olayinka Balogun from Access Bank Nigeria Plc., regarding about N34 million Automated Machine Fraud (ATM) being perpetrated by an Ambrose Alli University student.
“The copy of the petition stated further that ‘one Ehimea on several occasions manipulated the ATM machine of the bank’s branch at 43B, Evifa Bufu Road, Benin City and his access card visa with number 4751-7500-0003 to withdraw the sums between April and June this year.’ Upon receiving a copy of the petition, we swung into investigation.”
Before Ehimea was arrested last week, investigation showed that he was living like a king on the campus, cruising around in his newly acquired cartoon colour Toyota Nissan Pathfinder sport utility veicle (SUV) with registration number AW 141 USR.
Ehimea was arrested inside the banking hall where, according to the source, he was officially invited for some other multi-million naira related investment with the bank and a red carpet was rolled out for the unsuspecting bank visitor. Until his arrest last week, officials of the bank inquired about his source of income and his business that netted millions of naira in such a short time.
Ehimea lied to them that he was a computer analyst and computer engineer working for a Google search agency with the United States of America, and each time they paid him with thousand of American dollars.

•George Osagale

SFU investigations revealed further that the ATM fraud whizkid operated about five different bank accounts through which he siphoned the ill-gotten money with fake credit cards.
The cards’ numbers are: 023002300002328, 030031000360, 0300350060038; 0301510025641 and 0101620002540.
In his confessional statement, Ehimea admitted all charges levelled against him.
According to him, “what I illegally withdrew was not N34 million but N20 million.
“One morning that I needed to cash money from the bank with my Access Bank visa card, I spotted the faulty machine. I discovered that each time I withdrew money my account would not be debited, so I just kept on withdrawing.
“But each time I withdrew some money, my account was credited again. I was always scared, but I would collect it, rush back to the banking hall and re-credit my account. I did this several times that I could not even remember.”
When Ehimea sensed the looming danger, he cleverly transferred about N12 million to his friend, Ighodaro Osahon’s, account at GT Bank, Benin, for safe keep, and hired the services of one solicitor identified as Mr. Edokpaigbe Edobor to fight his cause. He was paid N50, 000 for his legal services.

•Ighodaro Osahon

PM.News further gathered that Ehimea cleverly transferred some amount to different banks. These are; N3 million, Oceanic Bank; N17 million and United Bank of Africa; N5 million.
When police questioned both George Osagale and Ighodaro Osahon about the level of their involvement, they denied any knowledge of the ATM scam and Ighodaro stated that “I don’t know that Ehimea had transferred the N12 million into my GTBank account.”
Items recovered from Ehimea include five credit cards and six brands of handsets.
Commenting on the ATM fraud, the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, Mr. Olayinka Balogun, advised all parents to engaged their children meaningfully.
“Children of such ages are very clever and brilliant. If their brains were not positively engaged it could be used negatively. Idle hands are the devil’s workshops,” said Balogun.
Meanwhile, the matter has been transferred to the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for further investigation.

REPUTATION IS VALUABLE BUT CHARACTER IS PRICELESS
Politics / Re: Has Fashola Really Done Anything In Lagos State? by Truequest(m): 1:14pm On Jul 17, 2008
Pepeye:

Well spoken Sky blue but you seem to be missing the point here, when we place city beautification side by side with healthcare, food, housing, job creation and so on there should be a scale of preference; l sincerely think that city beautification is secondary. Now let’s assume Fashola actually succeeds in turning the city into Paris- investors ain’t going to still come down when there is still high crime perpetuated by the displaced people.

Fashola should be advised to embark on wealth creation for Lagosians, and then beautification will easily come on with an empowered person. He ought to first delve into the root of the problem of Lagosians, One thing leads to the other; abject poverty obviously led to the squalor. Fashola should address the root of this problem, Let him stop chasing shadows, he should create value for the system, ensure that people-oriented programs are embarked upon; and then this his much-touted beautification exercise will naturally fall in place.

Of course no one is quarrelling with city beautification exercise, but just as Wole Soyinka posited; “A Tiger does not need to proclaim its Tigeritude!”

So much for his “Eko O ni Baje!” -That is not all, how is Fashola to address the crime rates of the displaced populace, bad roads, education, healthcare delivery.

Prioritization is the issue here. The question is what place does he have for the poor, and vulnerable in his state in the scheme of this beautification exercise. A lot of these people are yet still groaning under the weight this administration. What is Fashola’s blue print for their welfare and well being. Please l am yet to know of a good leader who made it without putting the people’s welfare and interest first.

Finally Sky Blue it is cronies like you who turn leaders into tyrants. Why get so easily swayed away by the pretentious moves of maverick politicians-

Pepeye I can not agree less with you, Government all over the world is about people and people alone. His intentions might be right but like you said his priority is misplaced. So much bravado little impact. Bulldozers has taken over from fire that ravaged markets in Lagos, now it is bulldozer all over the place with a claim that those buildings were illegally constructed.

Politics / Gov Daniel Begs Obj: ‘i’m Your Son, Forgive Me’ by Truequest(m): 4:28pm On Jul 16, 2008
Otunba Gbenga Daniel has tendered unreserved apology to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Owu Chief who is believed to be behind his political problem in Ogun State.

Led by the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), leadership in the South West, Governor Daniel visited Obasanjo in his new Abeokuta mansion, Off Babangida Boulevard, and popularly called ‘Ori-Oke’ on Monday morning to settle his political disagreement with him.

P.M.News saw Daniel arriving Obasanjo’s home at exactly 9.30 a.m along with Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo, vice chairman, PDP (South-West zone), the secretary, Mr. Ropo Adesanya, and the party’s treasurer, Mr. Sunday Ogunlade. Obasanjo’s aides kept them waiting for some time before allowing them to see him.

-cover-16-july-2008.jpg

They eventually went into a ‘closed door meeting’ with Obasanjo, during which, close sources revealed that, Governor Gbenga Daniel was seriously rebuked by the former president for his “stubbornness and disobedience.”

According to our sources, the South West PDP leaders immediately went on their knees on behalf of the governor who followed suit by begging the Ota farmer who was full of rage against his erstwhile political son.

In his no-nonsense trade mark, the retired general was said to have chided the governor, after itemising his sins and stating why he deliberately backed out of the peace talk between the governor and the state’s lawmakers.

The PDP South-West vice chairman, Alhaji Oladipo was said to have pleaded on behalf of the governor.

At a point, revealed our sources, Obasanjo and Daniel retired into a private room where he was said to have prostrated for the former president with a promise that what happened between them would not repeat itself again.

He was quoted to have said “Baba I’m very sorry for whatever I’ve done to you sir. I’m your son, please forgive me.” Obasanjo was said to have smiled and told him to rise to his feet.

The closed door reconciliation meeting, which lasted over one hour, was conducted in Yoruba language with Obasanjo saying he had forgiven Daniel and counselled the governor on how to go about his reconciliation meeting with the lawmakers later that day.

Governor Daniel and the PDP leaders left Obasanjo’s home for the governor’s office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta at 10.45 a.m., where the reconciliatory meeting with the lawmakers was held.

After the meeting with the lawmakers, the PDP vice-chairman (South-West), Alhaji Oladipo told journalists that the governor and the lawmakers had buried their hatchet.

He revealed that those who had  gone to court over the crisis had been  ordered to withdraw the litigations for the sake of peace.

A PDP stalwart also confirmed to P.M.News that Gbenga Daniel had begged Chief Obasanjo and that they have both settled their differences, but analysts yesterday told P.M.News that Obasanjo was into his usual game of deception.

“Daniel should watch his back, OBJ never forgives,” said a political scientist who asked for anonymity.”

Foreign Affairs / South Africa Plan To Legalise Prosititution For 2010 by Truequest(m): 3:57pm On Jul 16, 2008
Plans to legalise prostitution for the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa have been criticised by religious groups and opposition parties.

The local authority in Durban wants legalised adult entertainment venues during the tournament.

But African Nazareth Democratic Movement (ANDM) president Thokozani Hlatshwayo said the proposal was "against the word of God".

Opposition parties fear that, if introduced, it could become permanent.

The youth wing of the Inkatha Freedom Party and the main opposition Democratic Alliance have condemned the suggestion.

An additional concern is Aids - some five million people in South Africa are HIV-positive - making it one of the world's worst-hit countries.

Durban's municipality said Germany had many adult entertainment centres during the World Cup in 2006, which were very popular with visitors.

It said while prostitution was illegal in South Africa, it could not ignore the fact that the sex industry thrives during major events like the World Cup.

To address this, entertainment centres such as strip clubs and escort agencies would be located in special areas where they would be safe and easily accessible.

Municipality Deputy Mayor Logie Naidoo said a final decision had not yet been taken.

"The national government will give us a lead in this matter, whether it relates to the 2010 Soccer World Cup or any other time for that matter," he said.

Safe Environments

City officials admit that there are already young girls and women working as prostitutes on the streets of Durban.

They say plans are already in place to help them operate in safe environments.

In January, MP George Lekgetho called for prostitution to be legalised during the tournament.

"It is one of the things that would make it a success," he said.

He told parliament that it would help cut incidences of rape.

The BBC's Mpho Lakaje in Johannesburg says his suggestion was met with derision by other MPs. But a group representing sex workers welcomed it.

"We would support any legalisation of sex work, particularly during the 2010 World Cup," Nicola Fick from the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Task Force (Sweat) told the BBC.

The idea of legalising sex workers was first proposed last year by police commissioner Jackie Selebi, who has since been suspended over corruption charges.

vigasimple:

As I predicted yesterday, there was plenty peppersuyaing and big stouting at david mark's residence.

In the next few days and weeks we shall be seeing 'solidarity' visits from ghana must go bag carriers for 'blessing monies' for spiritual and traditional mentors

The bible said that ' when the foundation is shaky what will the righteous do'

As things stand it appears that there are very few righteous men remain in Nigeria let alone in the political system.

The mannerism of the celebration is so shameful dear, I mean the way fathers and Grand Daddies were jumping is amazing. It can only happen in Nigeria, praises and accolades to judiciary, no one told us how much it cost them.
Reminds me of the Judge in Osun, can you imagine how the man sweated to force it down our throat as if he was one of Oyinola's Lawyer. Ha! Nija!!!
Politics / Re: David Mark Survives, Wins Appeal In Jos by Truequest(m): 4:53pm On Jul 15, 2008
The problem here is enormous, to solve it, we have to start with the electoral body, then the people they helped into power. If that is not done trust me Oshomole might not get justice and same goes to Ondo. This is bad. God deliver Nigeria.
How will a leader who is sure you did not vote for him listen to you. How will such leader implement programs that touch the life of the people? Little wonder there is so much looting in the land.

Even Rule of law has limits

As u all should know.

Besides i wouldnt say it would be good 4 d polity as it were if mark was booted out.

Cos in my opinion he seems to be handling d senate quite well (based on some warped standards sha)

I beg to differ the issue here is not how you are handling the senate but our method of selecting our representatives.
A thief is a thief even if he steal to feed the poor not to mention these people we have in Government and their conducts.

Definitely we are not getting it right, but in any case even if there is a re-election the usual we still happen.
