Politics / Re: Northern Traitors Kept Me In Prison Not Just Obasanjo - Bamaiyi by Truequest(m): 4:04pm On May 05, 2008

When will Al Mustapha come up with his own democracy line?

Not long he will soon be out of prison too.
Politics / Northern Traitors Kept Me In Prison Not Just Obasanjo - Bamaiyi by Truequest(m): 3:04pm On May 05, 2008
Former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, has accused top retired military generals from the North of being the masterminds of his nine years’ incarceration.
Bamaiyi, who was recently released from prison after a Lagos High Court discharged and acquitted him of complicity in an attempted murder case, said the blame for his travails should not be placed at the doorstep of former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo alone, because it was a conspiracy between the former president and some members of the Northern elite who felt he should be punished for his refusal to cooperate with them to install an ex-military man as president of Nigeria when the decision to hand over power to a civilian government gathered momentum.

He said while other persons in the North, who were unaware of the real reasons he was thrown into jail, were praying for his safety in prison and were making efforts to secure his release, those behind his predicament were engaged in high level lobby to ensure that he never regained freedom.

In his words, "I have no problem with Obasanjo. Obasanjo was not the one who first arrested me. Before Obasanjo came to power, I didn't know him, neither did he know me. My brothers in the North, because of selfish personal interests, told lies about me to Obasanjo and advised him to arrest me. As a result of this, I have no problem with Obasanjo. It is a home matter. They know me and I know them. I suffered all that I went through because I refused to toe their line and opted for true democracy. This was not what they expected. So I had to be taken care of.

"While some of my people were praying for my welfare while in prison and even making efforts to secure my release, some of these, my brothers, were holding high level consultations with the government of the day to ensure that I never get out of there. But I have left them in the hands of God."
Bamaiyi spoke with Daily Sun on this and other issues in Zuru, Kebbi State, after a civic reception organized by his people to welcome him home.

My freedom ordained by God
I thank God. You know, for someone to leave his home for almost nine years, not knowing what would happen there, is a difficult situation. So I thank God for bringing me back home safely and I am happy with the reception I got. I thank God because, whatever happens is with the knowledge of God and in every difficulty, God brings succour especially if you stand on the path of justice.
Baka taba jin cewar, ance gaskiya mutum ta kare ba, sai dai kanyar mutum ta kare (you have never heard that this is the end of the road for a just man, but it is said, this is the end of the road for a liar). It simply means truth has no end. But a lie would one day come to an end. Today, the lie has ended and I am now back home.

Why I refused Danjuma, Gusau's pleas
I have said it, when it was uttered, that a military man would be made president, I said I did not agree and I would not support such a proposition. General Danjuma came to my house when I was Chief of Army Staff and talked to me about this issue. I told him, even if he is the person, I would not support him.
General Aliyu Gusau is still alive. He too did the same and I said the same thing, that I would not support the proposition. It is not that the government did not like the truth. When we wanted to hand over power, even Gusau asking me the question, he was tired. And indeed, we are tired of military rule. Was this not true? So, it was not proper at that time to impose a military man on Nigerians. Now, we have seen the result. This is what I stood up against and I was punished for almost nine years, for standing up for democracy.
What we have got in eight years of Obasanjo has taken us 20 years backward. The incumbent President is doing his best probing here and there. If they had heeded my advice, I am sure the difficulty we are passing through, even if we were meant to suffer, it would not have been of this magnitude. But I am glad that since I was put in detention, they were the ones that took the shame. They are now the same people abusing and castigating Obasanjo everywhere. I don't abuse Obasanjo. I have finished my part.

Interest in politics
Look, I want to first of all, take care of myself. I even have a medical appointment to keep. My priority right now is my health; I want to regain my health, know the condition of my family and take care of my aged mother. Every man is a political animal and I am not different. But right now, I am not considering partisan politics.

Persecution of my military associates
I am sure about this. If you look carefully at most of the young military officers retired, they were all at the peak of their career. I know many of them because we worked together. But because of me, a lie was even concocted that they were planning to gather people to take me out of prison.
Since I entered that prison, even if the walls had fallen, I would not have gone anywhere because I knew I was on the path of truth. I was sure that there would be a day that God would bring justice as long as there was a trial.
It was not proper the way the officers were retired from the army. There is nowhere in the world where people are retired at the rank of a colonel, at a time considered the peak of their career. When they were supposed to display professionalism, you did not allow them to work. Before you regain what you have lost by retiring these men, you have to take someone to the academy to spend five years. Before he reaches the rank of a colonel, it will take another 20 years. Now, you can see that you need 25 years before you replace someone with the rank of a colonel. This means that damage has been inflicted on the army by the retirements.

My advice for Yar'Adua
Well, I can see that the government has started doing what ought to be done. All I am saying is that let's go for justice. All these probes going on should be done with justice. You see, whoever takes power should know that a day will come when he will be called upon to give account of what he had done. I have seen that this government is on the right path but there should be no retreat to the old ways because I know some people are not going to be happy.

My prison memoirs
I am giving it a thought. I said it at the reception, let us come together in unity: What is worrying us in Zuruland is lack of unity. If we unite, elders should know that they as elders should give proper advice rather than be instigating authorities to arrest this or that person. This is not correct. This is my advice. If we are united in Zuruland and support the Emir, General Sani Sami, I am sure we will attain tremendous development.

Celebrities / Bisi Fayemi(ekiti Ac Guber Candidate's Wife) Bags Chieftaincy Title In Enugu by Truequest(m): 5:36pm On Apr 30, 2008
Wife of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State Action Congress gubernatorial Candidate in the April 2007 elections, Mrs. Bisi-Adeleye Fayemi, was last weekend, conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Traditional Ruler and Igwe in Council of Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Central Local Government Area of Enugu State, H.R.H Igwe S.A.C Ozoeze, Onwa Na Etili Owa II of Imezi Owa.

Mrs Fayemi who is the Executive Director, Africa Women Development Fund (AWDF) a non government organisation based in Accra, Ghana, was rewarded with the Chieftaincy title of ‘Ochiorah of Imezi Owa’ Enugu State of Nigeria in recognition of her tremendous financial assistance to widows through her organisation in partnership with another NGO, Women Aid Collective (WACOL).

In his speech at the occasion, Igwe Ozoeze explained to the gathering that the entire people of Imezi Owa and WACOL have decided to honour an illustrious African Lady, Mrs. Bisi Fayemi.

The Igwe explained further that “though the government of Nigeria has spent a lot of money in alleviating poverty, it did not get to the grassroots, but with the efforts of the AWDF and WACOL, Mrs. Fayemi has been able to put smiles on the faces of widows and other women in difficult circumstances, as a result, the lives of these women and their dependants have tremendously improved.”

The Igwe, who was supported by other Igwes from three other communities in the state, was very elated and happy with Mrs. Fayemi for bringing succour to the widows in the area through her organisation.

“We and some of them (widows) are gathered here therefore to behold our benefactor face to face and express in concrete terms our appreciation of her good deeds, works and genuine love for us all by honouring her with a befitting Chieftaincy title –OCHIORAH of Imezi Owa, Enugu State of Nigeria.”

Ochiora means ‘a leader of the people’.

The installation ceremony commenced with the traditional gun salute followed by the breaking of kolanuts after the Igwes had been ushered to their seats.

Many cultural groups performed at the occasion in addition to a standby highlife orchestra which gave beautiful rendition at the occasion.

About eight women widow groups also performed to the admiration of the new chief. They showed their appreciation to their benefactor by acrobatic displays.

The installation proper witnessed the dressing up of the new chief with her traditional regalia and beads. The Igwe later completed the installation by decorating her with her official head beads, the red cap, horse tail and traditional hand fan with the insignia of her office, Ochiorah.

With the installation complete, the Ochiorah danced round the venue, greeting the Igwes and everybody present.

In her response, Mrs. Fayemi thanked the community for the great honor done her.

She said she was overwhelmed with emotions and could only thank them for the great honour.

She told the gathering that she had accepted the chieftaincy title with all the responsibility attached.

She accepted to be a sister, daughter and a mother to the community. She said she had always wanted to help needy women all her life and that she enjoyed what she was doing and would continue to do more given this type of appreciation.

Mrs Fayemi informed the gathering that her organisation had supported 575 women groups in 41 countries including women in her native Ekiti State in Nigeria.

She explained that AWDF decided to support an organisation like WACOL because it is genuine and has noble intentions.

Mrs. Fayemi later presented gifts to the Igwes present and the widow groups. She was in turn presented with gifts by the widows and the Igwe.

In his own remark, Igwe Barrister Raphael S.N Eze, Ochendo I of Obigo Obukpa, in Nsukka L.G.A, a former Law lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, who came with members of his cabinet to grace the occasion, told the gathering that he was not surprised about the chieftaincy title given to Mrs. Fayemi as he was quite aware of her good deeds which has also affected the live of widows in his Nsukka domain positively.

I know that Jr. used his mother's account to post, which would likely mean that it is his mother's email account as well. Normally I would be concerned that the mother would prevent the father from seeing the son. In this case I'm not concerned about that. Emeka, Sr. and I have discussed it. He knows the mother of course, and he believes that she will encourage him to talk to his father. I think it's more an issue of he may have gotten tired of the insults and what-not and decided to lay low for a while. I've checked his profile and he hasn't even logged in since 4/16. I've sent Seun a second email message asking for his assistance with the matter. Of course there is only so much he can do. He can't drag the boy here by force, but maybe if he encourages the boy to come and check the thread that will be enough to get him here. Anyway, I can't tell you how we appreciate everyone's support and prayers. We're not worried. God is in control and He will perfect the situation. We are sure we will have a praise report for everyone soon.

I think I should commend your passion and doggedness in linking your hubby with his children. This is selfless to say the least. Your faith is also contagious keep it up.

Have we all forgotten that leadership is about responsibility. Moreso, to neglect history is the way to
a gloomy future. Have you guys forgotten the OBJ did not all his party the right of choice on their
presidential primaries? Have you also forgotten that even after the primary what the election he

Sports / Premier League - Villa Prefers Arsenal To Chelsea by Truequest(m): 6:14pm On Apr 16, 2008
Highly-rated Valencia striker David Villa has revealed that, should he move to England, Arsenal would be his preferred destination.

With the Spanish striker insinuating that he may call time on his career at the Mestalla over the summer there is likely to be a whole host of clubs fighting for his signature.

He has netted 63 times in just three seasons for Los Che, making him one of the most feared forwards in world football.

Chelsea are known to be one his many admirers, with Avram Grant believed to have already enquired as to the Spanish hitman's availability.

However, Villa appears to have dashed the Blues' hopes of taking him to Stamford Bridge by revealing that he would rather be a Gunner.

"I watch the Premier League a lot and the team I'm most attracted to is definitely Arsenal," he told The Sun.

"Their brilliant one and two-touch football and the whole style of rapid counter-attack which dominates the top level of the Premier League now is the one which suits my game best of all.

"I think I'm made to succeed in England but of course it's one thing saying it and quite another getting there and then doing it.

"The Valencia president (Agustin Morera) always told me he wouldn't sell me until summer 2008. If an offer comes in I'm hungry to test myself in England."

Should a move to Emirates Stadium not materialise, Villa admitted that he would be equally happy to join up with his international team-mate Fernando Torres at Liverpool.

"It's great playing alongside Fernando," he said.

"We understand each other totally and we get on brilliantly off the park."

Politics / Bayelsa: Lawmakers Oppose Swearing In Of Acting Governor by Truequest(m): 5:32pm On Apr 16, 2008
There was confusion in Bayelsa State this morning as the Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Mr. Warinepreye Seibarugu, could not be sworn in as the acting governor of the state following opposition by six members of the state House of Assembly.

Mr. Seibarugu was supposed to have been sworn in this morning by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kate Ediri, in accordance with the order of the Court of Appeal, sitting in Port Harcourt which ruled that no election took place in the state on 14 April, 2007 and thereby nullified the election of Governor Timipre Sylva.

Unconfirmed reports said the six members of the state House of Assembly had gone to court to seek an injunction restraining the state Chief Judge from swearing in the Speaker, because, according to them, they had impeached him.

It was also gathered that the state Chief Judge claimed that she had not received a copy of the Appeal Court judgement and so she could not swear in the acting governor. This could not, however, be confirmed before going to press.

The disgruntled legislators were said to have gone to some private broadcasting stations in Port Harcourt to say that they met last night and impeached the Speaker.

The appeal court justices in a unanimous judgement yesterday said the evidence before them showed that no election took place in Bayelsa State on 14 April, 2007 and ordered a fresh election within 90 days.

The court also ordered the immediate swearing in of the Speaker as the acting governor of the state, pending the election of a new governor in three months’ time.

For several hours this morning the sacked governor held a closed door meeting with Seibarugu on the activities of government in the state.

Thousands of Bayelsans had gathered to witness the ceremony which was to hold at the conference room of the Government House. At press time the event was yet to take place.

Security was tight in the state as hundreds of mobile policemen and soldiers were deployed to strategic locations around the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital.

The state House of Assembly was sealed off while three armoured tanks were parked in front of the Government House in Yenagoa.

Some armoured tanks filled with soldiers also patrolled the streets of Yenagoa to ward off any violence.

Also, I happen to live outside Lagos.  In my town bad roads are more of a problem than traffic: you can take shortcuts.  For this, I need a vehicle that can navigate potholes, puddles, shallow gutters, roads with big stones, etc.

Oga Seun you are honestly not serious with this your keke, or how can you use keke to navigate the kind of terrian you described. Big stones! Politics / Power Sector Scandal: Obj Owns Pre-paid Meter Company! by Truequest(m): 5:17pm On Apr 08, 2008
Ownership of a prepaid meter company, UNISTAR Hi-Tech System Limited, which is in charge of installation of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) pre-paid meters across the country, has been traced to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The China-based company, P.M.News gathered, is jointly owned by Obasanjo, who has dominant shares of 7,300,000 as against the 2,700,000 shares of his partners, Biacpl FZE.

The main business of the company, according to the Association of Professionals For Good Governance (APGG), based in Abuja, which made the disclosure, includes the producton, servicing and recharging of pre-paid energy meters and purchase of meters, components and materials from China.

The association also revealed that the company was in charge of installation of pre-paid meters across the country while PHCN does nothing.

The association described as a violation of public trust for Obasanjo to have used his office in awarding a contract to a company owned by him.

A satement signed by Architect Musa Abubakar, National President and Dr. Bayo Idowu, National Secretary of the Association of Professionals For Good Governance, called on President Umaru Yar’Adua to give a moral backing to the probe of the energy sector being conducted by the House of Representatives

“Your Excellency would agree that the past was indeed an unsurpassable, intolerable regime of corruption and misrule. Revelations from the ongoing probe of the Power Sector by a committee of the House of Representatives, headed by Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, have shown the extent to which corruption pervaded the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo,” the association stated.

The association also called on the Yar’Adua administration to demonstrate to all, especialy the international community, that his administration was a clear departure from Obasanjo’s reign of impunity and lawlessness.

A woman has been rescued from the jaws of a saltwater crocodile in Australia after her husband jumped onto its back and forced it to flee.

The attack took place in the Litchfield National Park near Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory.

The crocodile lunged at its victim as she stood on the banks of a river, locking its jaws around her legs before trying to drag her into the water.

Police have said the heroism of her husband almost certainly saved her.

He leapt onto the large reptile's back, gouging at its eyes with his fingers trying to free his wife.

Eventually, after a brief but almighty struggle, the animal relented.

The 36-year-old woman suffered serious injuries and will have surgery in Darwin.

Her husband escaped unharmed.

Politics / Ibb’s Daughter Marries Zamfara Gov., After Dumping First Husband by Truequest(m): 4:50pm On Apr 02, 2008
Aisha, the first daughter of former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retired) is giving the marriage institution another try after dumping her first husband.

After her failed marriage to Basheer Garba, P.M.News learnt that the beautiful daughter of the self-styled evil genius, will be joined in a fathia to Mahmud Shinkafi, the Zamfara State governor, on 11 April, 2008.

This time, the Nikkah will be devoid of all the glamour and razmatazz of her first marriage as it will be low-key and attended strictly by families of the would-be couple.

Aisha’s first marriage to Garba in September, 2003 drew top dignitaries from all walks of life among whom were former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retired); Chief Ernest Shonekan and wife; the late Stella Obasanjo; Chief Olu Falae; former governors of Lagos and Abia states, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.

Others who attended the high society marriage were Segun Awolowo; former Lagos State Military governor, Colonel Raji Rasaki (retired); former Inspector-General of Police, Musiliu Smith; ex-Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar and wife; business mogul, Otunba Adekunle Ojora and wife; Erelu Ojuolape; Admiral Augustus Alkhomu (retired) among others.

The event was held at IBB’s Hill Top Mansion, Minna, the Niger State capital.

Aisha and Basheer were always seen in public together, while the marriage lasted.

They were together at the wedding of IBB’s eldest son, Mohammed, to daughter of Maiduguri businessman, Rahama Indimi on 10 July, 2004.

P.M.News could not ascertain the reason for the break-up of the marriage which produced a child, though Aisha reverted to her family name, Babangida, some months ago and had told anybody who cared to ask her about the marriage that she is happy with herself.

Aisha Babangida attended Corona School and Air force Secondary School, both in Lagos, before she went abroad to study Psychology.
