Politics / I Won’t Blame My Teachers If I Fail – Obasanjo by Truequest(m): 3:11pm On Jul 10, 2008
Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday evening re-lived his experience after the semester examinations at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where he is studying Theology, saying he would accept the outcome of the exams in good faith.

Speaking at the 2nd African Conference on Distance Education (ACDE) in Lagos, the former president said: “My fellow students and the media were interested in the examinations, particularly my result. But let me tell you, those of you who are wondering about my result, I have my number, which is not known by my teachers. So, if I pass, it is not because of Ojoro (cheating), but because of my hardwork. And if I fail, I will not blame my teachers either.”

The former president, who said he did not believe in buck passing, therefore advised his fellow students to always take responsibility for their actions even when they did not excel in their examinations. He further urged the students to desist from blaming the teachers when they failed their examinations.
His words: “So those of you who blame the teacher when you fail in your exams, you should learn not to blame the teacher. Now the pot has broken, who broke the pot? It is you. The pot has not been broken, you did not break the pot. If you fail, it is your fault. If I fail, it is my fault.”
Obasanjo advised those interested in how he performed in the semester examinations to check his results from the vice chancellor.

While noting that being subjected to the rigour and discipline of preparing and studying for examinations could be exciting, humbling and stimulating, the former president said that it could also be energy-sapping.

In his words: “I found out that no matter the age, examination has the same grip on all serious students. Burning the midnight oil, having examination fever and having the last-minute revision just before entering the examination hall. Fellow students of my children and grandchildren’s ages were intrigued and maybe felt proud that we sat together in the same examination hall.”

On why he took the bold step to return to the classroom in an unconventional school system, Obasanjo said: “For me, as a deputation of my personal belief, interest, commitment to open and distance learning as an effective means of mass education without compromising quality, I enrolled as a student of NOUN in 2007. This was shortly before the end of my tenure and I have no regrets whatsoever.”

He described the experience as exciting and challenging. “It was for me a way of showing example and to see for myself what it all contained. And I found the experience challenging and very rewarding. It is quite exciting to return to the classroom in a non-conventional academic setting several years after learning from the conventional system. More exciting, however, is the experience of sitting for semester examinations.”

A 62-year-old woman has finally passed her driving test - 27 years after her first lesson.

Teresa Clarke, of Wroxham, Norfolk, went through 20 driving instructors, spent £15,000 in fees and had 450 hours of tuition.

She also failed 12 tests, cancelled a further 35 and had 50 mock exams.

Now, following her latest effort to ditch her L-plates, on June 26, she is free to get behind the wheel of a car.

"It took a long time for it to sink in when I was told I had passed .I kissed the woman examiner "said Mrs Clarke.

Mrs Clarke, who has yet to purchase a car of her own, puts her success down to an improved focus.

"My concentration is much better now - I don't drink coffee or tea anymore and have no additives," she said.

She said she tried not to think about how much time and money she spent on learning to drive.

"It was over so many years that I was able to spread out the money," she said.

"I've been through a lot of driving instructors because some of them kicked me out. But I was determined to pass and kept going."

Family / Female Circumcision: Grandma Kills Grand Daughter by Truequest(m): 5:55pm On Jul 08, 2008
A couple has been left distraught after the grand mother of their week-old daughter brought her life to a tragic end while circumcising her without the consent of the couple.

Mr. James Igbaji, residing at Ikot Ansa, Calabar, whose wife, Molly Igbaji, gave birth to their first daughter, Eunice, on 20 June, invited his mother from the village to Calabar to assist in taking care of the new born baby since their domestic servant was writing her third term exams.

However, when the woman came, she planned to circumcise the girl, a common practice in the northern part of the state.

“The afirst day he arrived here, she asked me if the girl had been circumcised. When I told her no, she then asked when we were prepared to do it.

“When I told her we didn’t intend to do it, she screamed in amazement and declared that it was an abomination if we failed to do it,” Molly, mother of the girl, told P.M.News at their home.

According to the distraught lady, she thought that with her explanation that women ought not undergo circumcision, her mother in-law would let the issue be.

She said she did not know that she had the intention of circumcising the girl in their absence.

“On Friday, after my husband had gone to work, I went to the market to buy some ingredients with which to prepare food. That was when Mama Ogeyi sent a neighbour to buy her a razor blade. With it she sliced the private part of my daughter and the baby began to bleed and scream.”

She said when the scream became too loud and persistent, neighbours came in to find the girl in “terrible condition”. She said as they made to rush her to the hospital for treatment, the baby died on the way.

“Before they could come back my husband’s mother had packed her bags and gone away.

“My husband has been too angry to find out if she went to the village or elsewhere,” Molly said.

The matter she said, has been reported to the police but added that arresting the woman would be tantamount to double trouble for the family as they would still be the ones to bear the cost of bailing her.

I think OBJ should not be crucified all the time, partcularlly in the above report;
Lets take a look at some points in the story:

Fani-Kayode had, on receiving the interim report, briefed Obasanjo in a memo thus: “…Mr. President, ordinarily I would have referred such a matter to the EFCC for further investigation, however, it is my considered opinion to bring the situation to your notice before further action is taken…”

Thus, Fani-Kayode sought further directive from the then president.
To his request via a memo of December 18, 2006, Obasanjo wrote: “Minister of Aviation, the culprit or culprits must be identified and severely punished.”

I don't think this is a response from an accomplice or is it?

Look at yet another point,

Again, Fani-Kayode on January 30, 2007 sought Obasanjo’s approval for a decisive action against those indicted in the committee’s report.
To it, Obasanjo wrote: “Minister, Approved”, and dated it 06/02/07.
Sources said that Obasanjo was nonetheless unperturbed that his friend was indicted in that report.

I think Fani should have acted earlier, had he done that, may be he would not have been in this mess.
Politics / What Obj Told Fani-kayode …about N6.5 Billion Safe Tower Project by Truequest(m): 7:53pm On Jul 06, 2008
Unknown to many, the current travail of former Aviation Minister, Prof Babalola Borishade over the controversial N19.5billion Aviation Intervention Fund might have been ordered by his friend and immediate past president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Borishade is currently facing trial over the way and manner the N19.5billion Aviation Intervention Fund (AIF) was spent while he was in office as minister.
The man who succeeded him as minister, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode is also in the dock, required to explain the role he played in the management of the Fund.

Specifically, the two men were dragged before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alleging that they have questions to answer over the management of the N19.5billion Aviation Intervention Fund, part of which was the N6.5billion contract for Safe Tower Project (STP).

Contract for the STP was signed in June 2006 - when Borishade was Aviation minister – between the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) on behalf of the Federal Government and AVSATEL GMBH of Vienna, Austria, represented in the country by AVSATEL Communications Limited.
But there was nothing to write home about the pace of work on the Project until Borishade was removed from the ministry, hence Fani-Kayode reportedly constituted a technical sub-committee to evaluate it.

Led by Captain Shehu Iyai, the committee’s findings were presented to President Obasanjo before he left Aso Rock.
Before the recent arrest and arraignment of the two ministers, Sunday Sun had reported exclusively that the presidency was furious that contract for a project of that magnitude was awarded without recourse to established Due Process.

Also in the report, Professor Borishade was put on the spot for allegedly flouting the directive of the Federal Executive Committee (FEC) on the sourcing of the fund.
What role did Obasanjo play in the contract that has since become controversial, leading the two personae dramatis to tread words at the Senate probe panel?
Sunday Sun can authoritatively report that Fani-Kayode had, on receiving the interim report, briefed Obasanjo in a memo thus: “…Mr.

In January 2007 when the final report on the execution of the STP was turned in, it confirmed the preliminary findings of the technical subcommittee – that things were some sharp practices in the award of the contract.

Politics / $480m Afc Probe: Pressure Mounts On Panel To Nail Soludo by Truequest(m): 2:54pm On Jun 30, 2008
The committee set up by the Federal Government to investigate how Nigeria invested $480 million in the African Finance Corporation (AFC) appears to be embroiled in crisis, following the allegation of a predetermined attempt within the panel to rubbish the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Professor Chukuma Soludo.

Government had set up the committee to among other briefs, determine the laws and procedures relating to the setting up of such institutions as the AFC and ascertain whether such laws and procedures had been complied with to date by all relevant persons and authorities in the establishment, funding and operations of the corporation.

The panel was also mandated to ascertain the source of the authority for the withdrawal of the sum of $480 million for the purchase of equity in AFC by the CBN.
Daily Sun gathered that after conducting its investigations and making inquiries from Prof. Soludo and senior officials of the apex, the panel found nothing incriminating against the CBN boss.
However, it was further gathered as it appeared the committee would turn in a “not guilty” verdict on Soludo, certain interested parties began undercurrent moves to pressure the members to nail the CBN boss at all cost.

A source in the committee who declined to be named said: “If it were an innocent inquiry, we should have submitted our report after the first week because there was nothing to report according to our terms of reference. We were given three weeks but we are now in the third month, and yet there is no report.”
The reason why there is no report, according to the source, was because of the dilemma the committee was facing.

“The people who set us up had their mind set on what the report should look like and had probably even written the recommendations before setting us up. You may be surprised that the so-called interim report submitted to the president was not written by this committee. We have never written any report as a committee and you can quote me. We have been told to find anything negative, but so far, we have found nothing. From three weeks to three months we have been looking to find anything negative to form the basis of the recommendations which they have already written, but we have difficulty finding any.”
It was gathered that the committee was faced with the task of manipulating its findings to fit into the agenda the parties with vested interest wanted to achieve.

“First, we were told to recommend that Soludo should go on leave to enable us do an indepth investigation. That would have been ridiculous since there was no information we needed that they did not provide us. Second, they wanted us to recommend that further police investigation or arrest of the officers be undertaken. This is also baseless as there is nothing we can see that they did wrong. We cannot show that Soludo or any of the officers benefited personally. Government investment has been recovered and even the interest earned is known.

So, what is the problem? Frankly speaking, everything they want us to write in the report cannot stand any serious scrutiny,” the source revealed further.
According to him, the committee came to the conclusion that the AFC was an excellent initiative and that the promoters should be commended and that the government should hasten up to ratify the agreements. “We were going to recommend some minor changes here and there. But they are not letting us do our professional job, and some of us are really very sad but no one dares to show it.”

Asked why the members had not resigned, he retorted: “ “Have you not heard of ICPC and EFCC and that those who set us up also control those agencies?” The source, however, declined to name the officers forcing them to change their report.
He expressed the belief it was either to achieve a predetermined goal or to use it to blackmail Soludo when asked to comment on the possible motive for the probe or why they were desperate for a negative report.

The source did not believe that President Umaru Yar’Adua knew the details of what was going on. “The whole thing now is politics and witch-hunting, by people below the president,” he regretted.

Appearance:

Tobiegal,

I honestly think the waitings are different. The guy asked her to wait with undoubted assurance that he will marry her. It was just an issue of time. That waiting was defined with purpose and direction. That was why the lady could wait, and the guy lived up to his promise.

The kind of waiting she is making my friend go through now is loomed in undue probability. She could come up tomorrow to announce that God no longer recommend my friend. After all, who can ask God.

But the question is, if she was previously so sure of the guy being her soul mate, where does the element of uncertainty come from? Is God now a man that changes his words sporadically?

My friend wanted to confront her and pretend to "call off" the relationship just to watch her response, but I advised him against that approach. No need rushing to topple what God is probably perfecting. This might actually be a maturity-verification phase. I advised him to be extra supportive and genuinely caring to the lady, after all, good things don't come easy.
Even if he is about loosing his lady, maturity and love can woo her back.

Thats better I must commend you for that, let him just lie low and lt her be, though it can be tough but that's his best bet.

@Truequest, is it these reports and those speeches he gave that gave you doubts of his hands in these issues? Were you that easily dazzled? He asked for evidence of embezzlement and that means he did not embezzle? What about the EFCC report that OBJ used as a leverage to get Odilli to give up his presidential aspirations? Over 100billion Naira was proved by EFCC to be embezzled and the way such was done was intricately detailed in the report. After that report no one heard from Odili for a while, but i guess he banked on the short term memory of Nigerians because after about a year he has the audacity to ask for evidence and people are getting dazzled by this? What an insult. Given the fact that his wife is a judge why would one be surprised that he was good at answering questions? Someone that with his ill gotten influence was able to get a restraining order against the EFCC in which the order also interestingly explicitly restrained the EFCC from publishing their finds on him. What does he have to hide and what is so terrifying about the information the EFCC has not yet published? Should i post the EFCC report already published early 2007? And then knowing that no such law (eg FOI) is available to the citizens, after restraining EFCC he is now asking for evidence knowing the normal person on the street will be denied acess to this? SICKENING.

Efcc under Ribadu earlier told us that 90% or more of the past Governors are corrupt, but brought charges against a few, amazingly most of those expected were missing. This is not to say thoough that Odili is free, but in a situation where you accuse some one of a crime but fail to prosecute how then can you validate your claim.

Rivers State's federal allocation to date is second to no other and more than six times some states' allocation. In my opinion millitants should deal with their leaders first before attacking other people.

On my doubt what I was looking at is vendetta on the part of Amaechi, like okay you don't want me to be governor now I am governor, and I will show you. Hope you get my position, that were I have my doubt. The genuinity of the reconcilliation

Founder of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasehun, is receiving knocks from all quarters for playing the role of the advocate of the late Gen. Sani Abacha, and the dictator’s former Chief Security Officer (CSO), Major Hamza Al-Mustapha.

Al-Mustapha is standing trial for the alleged attempted murder of The Guardian newspaper publisher, Chief Alex Ibru, since 1999 and Fasehun has been campaigning for his release. The OPC leader’s seeming self-serving campaign for Al-Mustapha has attracted criticisms and shocked prominent Yoruba leaders whose kith and kin were allegedly killed by the Abacha regime with Al-Mustapha as the henchman of that military dictatorship.Yesterday, Fasehun took his campaign too far when he appeared at the Ikeja High Court where Al-Mustapha is standing trial for alleged attempted murder and was seen conferring with Al-Mustapha

This has prompted many to express concern over Fasehun’s future and the need to save him before he destroys himself.

One of those shocked at this development is Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.

The renowned playwright, in a veiled remark at the presentation of a book titled What A Country! written by Kunle Ajibade, on Wednesday at Muson Centre, said he was shocked that one of us attended the 10th anniversary of the death of Abacha in Kano.

He said he was even more shocked when the person defended his action in an interview he granted a newspaper.

Since then, he said, he has resolved to hire three psychiatrists to watch over him and to call him to order any time his behaviour runs counter to that which is normal and for which he is known for, and to prevent him from making statements publicly whenever they find out that something is wrong with him.

“I recommend this for all of us,” Soyinka said.

Many guests at the book launch did not miss the point Soyinka was making, considering the recent conduct of Fasehun whose organisation (OPC) was at the forefront of the campaign for the actualisation of the 12 June, 1993 presidential election, won by the late M.K.O. Abiola.

Politics / Omehia Weeps At Truth Commission by Truequest(m): 2:38pm On Jun 20, 2008
Ousted governor of Rivers State, Chief Celestine Omehia on Thursday, in Abuja, wept profusely while recalling the chilling story of his kidnapped mother before the state’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). He expressed willingness to reconcile with Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who, he said, is his blood brother and cousin.

Chief Omehia, who expressed confidence in the ability of the commission in achieving its objective, however, said such reconciliation must not be in public, as it is entirely a family affair.

According to him, “I’m willing to reconcile with Governor Amaechi. Anytime he is ready, he can call me, but the reconciliation between Governor Amaechi and me cannot be in the open. It is something between two of us and our wives who would sit down together and settle our differences privately, being a family affair.”

The former governor wept while narrating the story of the kidnap of his mother by militia groups in the state, but denied paying any ransom to secure her release as was alleged in a petition submitted to the commission by the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO).

Omehia, who insisted that Amaechi remains his blood brother, refused to be lured into admitting that the governor sponsored the kidnapping of his mother, as was put to him by one of the counsel, Mr. Uche Onyeguocha. He rather blamed it on political opponents.

He, however, admitted, under cross-examination, that Amaechi was the brain behind the arrest and detention of his father, who died six months after his release from police custody.
At Thursday’s sitting of the commission, Omehia and the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Oparah, took the CLO to the cleaners by accusing the body of allowing itself to be used to assassinate their character, wondering why an organization that earned so much respect and credibility could make itself a ready tool in the hands of people.

While washing his hands off any involvement with cult groups in the state, Omehia disclosed that he never, at any point, succumbed to threat of cult groups and wondered why his parents were given such inhuman treatment.

Earlier, both Omehia and Oparah described as concocted lie the allegation by the CLO linking them to the activities of cult groups in Rivers State. They expressed doubt whether the memoranda filed to the commission was actually written by CLO.

Omehia said it was ridiculous that the CLO linked him with one Soboma George, an illiterate, he said could not have had a chance in his government let alone being awarded contracts, as alleged in the memo.

Oparah said that he felt hurt by the memo, adding that if it turns out that CLO wrote it, he would demand unreserved apology from the body or, in the alternative, seek redress in court.
Omehia said the fact that CLO relied on the opinions of 30 persons out of three million people in the state showed how shallow the statistics used in the test was.
