Bidam: You have no case and no point here..The reason you opened this OP was in an attempt to ridicule, maligned and discredit tithers claiming they are following old covenant if they do tithe. Now that you have been flogged with scriptures and you have no rebbuttal for it.Instead of you to bury your head and wallow in shame and pity, you are here playing the victim card.SMH!I don't see you reacting directly to the issues i have raised. Take for example the issue i raised - When you say: The issue being discussed in Galatians 3 is HOW is a person SAVED in the eyes of God? Paul answers the question by quoting from the Jewish scriptures including the Torah and stating that a person is SAVED by God through faith in the work of the Messiah and not by his own works - you need to also see that Apostle Paul was addressing those who were ALREADY believers in the Messiah. Was he not? Therefore was he just stating HOW one can be saved or how not to live their spiritual lives after salvation? I will really want your answer on this though you seem to always avoid questions that you see challenge your position. I still await your answer. |
Bidam: OK..we tithers know that.In a discussion you don't assume what the speaker does not say. The statement was clear - Jesus Christ fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the law. Nothing here states that this makes Christians to be lawless, or is there? It is also good in discussions to answer questions directly. If a question is asked and you begin to imagine the reason why the question is asked in the first place and then try to answer the reason you think the question was asked you have veered off already. When you make statements such as: All this are your eisegesis and are in no way what the scripture is talking about. Taking a scripture out of CONTEXT and in isolation and making a doctrine out of it is NEVER exegesis. Goshen is always guilty of that, he is the number 1 false teacher on this forum and you re following suit - when all i did was simply to quote Bible passages directly, i really don't know where you are going. I did no exegesis. I only quoted scripture. Didn't you see that? When you say: The issue being discussed in Galatians 3 is HOW is a person SAVED in the eyes of God? Paul answers the question by quoting from the Jewish scriptures including the Torah and stating that a person is SAVED by God through faith in the work of the Messiah and not by his own works - you need to also see that Apostle Paul was addressing those who were ALREADY believers in the Messiah. Was he not? Therefore was he just stating HOW one can be saved or how not to live their spiritual lives after salvation? I will really want your answer on this though you seem to always avoid questions that you see challenge your position. I still close with the same thing: He who has an ear let him hear! |
The firstfruits offering is never directly applied to Christian giving in the New Testament. Not being under the Old Testament Law, the Christian is under no further obligation than to give cheerfully and liberally (2 Corinthians 9: 6-7). The most important aspect of the first fruits offering was the reason behind it: it was designed to recognize and thank God for providing the Israelites with the land flowing with milk and honey after their captivity in Egypt. The problem is, the first fruit offering was for the Jews for a specific purpose. Nowhere does the New Testament mention that the church is required or even encouraged to give a "first fruits offering." Like tithing, giving to the church is left up to the personal convictions of the individual believer. |
DrummaBoy: The best kind of deliverance is understanding my brother.Absolutely! |
Tithing came before the law and before there was even judaism. Abraham first tithed and he paid the tithe to Melchizedek who was a priest of righteousness. There was no christianity or Judaism at the time. Abraham tithed from what He had and that has followed through even till now. I don't see anything wrong in tithing. Its just a show of honour to God.
What we are saying is this: 1. We are under a NEW COVENANT. 2. Under the New Covenant our great high priest - Jesus Christ - fulfilled ALL the righteousness required of the Law. 3. In him - 'In Christ' - we are counted righteous; see 1 Corinthians 1:30. 4. Our spiritual lifestyle does not therefore depend on the observance of any specific ritual. 5. If anyone therefore wants to run his spiritual life by observance of ANYTHING that the law, under the OLD COVENANT required, such a person is obligated to KEEP ALL OF IT! See Galatians 5:3 6. Read again what two great Apostles said: - James 2:10 - "Whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it" - Galatians 3:1a - "All who rely on observing the law are under a curse" - Galatians 3:11 - "Clearly no one is justified before God by the law" - Galatians 5:3 - "Again i declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised (i.e. take any one part of the law as a means of gaining spirituality or the approval of God) that he is obligated to obey the whole law (i.e. you must keep the rest of the law)" He who has an ear let him hear! |
Bidam: In this dispensation If God heals you. You give testimony in church in appreciation to what God has done.Remember your exact words - All the teachings and sayings of Jesus is applicable to both the pharisees and his disciples who were constantly with him. He came to save the Jewish nation and by extension the whole world,so your case that he was referring to the pharisees alone has no moral standing. All scripture including MAT 23:23 IS WRITTEN FOR OUR LEARNING AND INSTRUCTION. Why are you now implying that in this DISPENSATION instead of going to offer the gift Moses commanded we should give TESTIMONY. TESTIMONY AND GIFT are certainly different things, are they not? SHOULD WE NOT FOLLOW JESUS WORDS TO THE LETTER? Secondly, which is THIS DISPENSATION, and what characterizes THIS DISPENSATION? Why are you implying a change for THIS DISPENSATION? |
Bidam: All the teachings and sayings of Jesus is applicable to both the pharisees and his disciples who were constantly with him. He came to save the Jewish nation and by extension the whole world,so your case that he was referring to the pharisees alone has no moral standing. All scripture including MAT 23:23 IS WRITTEN FOR OUR LEARNING AND INSTRUCTION.See one saying of Jesus: Matthew 8:4 – Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” Tell me which gifts commanded by Moses we are to give today and under what circumstances. How applicable is this and clearly explain the process. |
frosbel: show me please and these scriptures must be explicit in their reference to the tithe.I would love to see these references from Bidam! Please Bidam be very articulate and specific. References please and not explanations. |
Bidam: What does Mathew 23:23 tells you? Do you believe Jesus was speaking to you?I was reacting to your post - Bidam: I said you should go and study more.Do you discard the words of Jesus himself? Was Jesus not the FIRST APOSTLE? That is why i asked - Are you referring to Hebrews 3:1? Did Jesus Christ or any of the other Bible Apostles give any specific directions or commands about how to live the Christian life, if so what are they in relation to the issue in context? Is the context of apostleship of Jesus the passage i referred to? On Matthew 23:23 note the following: 1. The verse started by telling us who Jesus was addressing - "Woe to you, scribes [teachers of the law: NIV] and Pharisees, hypocrites!" It was a pronouncement of woe,an accusation . To who? To the scribes and Pharisees. Who were called what? Hypocrites! The Pharisees were hypocrites concerning tithing! 2. “For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin …” The “you” here is still the scribes and Pharisees continuing from “woe is you scribes and Pharisees”! They had overstated tithing to include spices which the Law had never intended. 3. “And [you] have omitted the weightier matters of the law -- judgment, mercy, and faith.” Jesus here says to the scribes and Pharisees that judgment, mercy and faith” are more important “matters of the law” than was tithing. Even though the law is one, Jesus showed here in Matthew 23:23 that some things in the law were ‘weightier’ than others. In this verse, justice, mercy and faithfulness are heavier and weightier than the rules for tithing spices. 4. If you interpret this verse as Jesus’ command for Christians to tithe money (which the text does not directly state) should you not also take it as Jesus’ command for the church to tithe garden spices - mint, dill and cumin - according to the Law (which the text does plainly state). Has the Law changed (Lev. 27:30-34) ? However, while quoting this very text in an attempt to prove that Jesus taught tithing to the Church, there is probably no church on earth which actually tells its members to literally bring tithes of garden spices. If you must take this verse then it must be all of it as it is. If you think it recommends tithing then does it include things not specified by the Law? There is no one who emphasizes tithing who emphasizes more these weightier matters of the law. Why is this so? |
Noneroone: I can understand the ease with which some christians deliberately mis- interprete the bible to remove those portions whose content they consider impracticable. Even if we assume it was directed to the nation of Israel, are we christians not part of God's people? " If you belong to Christ then you are the descendant of Abraham and will recieve what God has promised"(Gal. 3:29)Are you saying that the spiritual life for the Jew,for Israel, is the same as for the Church? If so how? |
Bidam: I said you should go and study more.Do you discard the words of Jesus himself? Was Jesus not the FIRST APOSTLE?Are you referring to Hebrews 3:1? Did Jesus Christ or any of the other Bible Apostles give any specific directions or commands about how to live the Christian life, if so what are they in relation to the issue in context? |
UKDBOSS: Yes u re required to keep the law. Jesus didnt come 2 abolish d law. The law is made up of two components; sin and punishment. Eg. If a man dishonours his father let him die. There is no sin where dere is no law so the mere fact that sin exists means d law exists. Grace takes away d punishment 4 sin. Jesus bore itWhich post exactly are you referring to? |
Bidam: Go study to show yourself approved bro...Gud nyt.I am curious to have your answer to: Did the Bible Apostles give us all that we need for the Christian way of life or did they leave out anything? Do we know more today about the Christian way of life than they did? |
Bidam: You are still wrong. National Israel was a prototype of what God intends to do globally so it was likened to a church at the time. Moses was a type of messiah. Jesus also spoke to Israel as a messiah. His death ushered in the full purposes of God. It's all about types and shadows. The reality is Christ. Christ is actually coming for a church not churches.Still go and study more.I agree with you that the reality is Christ. But then, what is the reality in Christ that we are to follow? |
Bidam: Wrong.....Jesus sayings and teachings before going to the cross is valid and binding on every believer. So also is the Law and the prophets.Christ was concealed in the OT and revealed in the NT.like i tell goshen and your friend, there is a synergy between the OT and NT.Did the Bible Apostles give us all that we need for the Christian way of life or did they leave out anything? Do we know more today about the Christian way of life than they did? |
Noneroone: My tithe goes to God through my church. The injunction is clear, "bring full amount of your tithes to the temple, so that there will be plenty of food there. Put me to the test and you will see that i will open the windows of heaven and pour out on you in abundandance all kinds of good things" (Malachi 3 : 10)Malachi 3:10 was addressing people in the nation Israel. The Church is not a physical national entity. Any significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. |
Bidam: Don't be hasty..re read my post again..scripture records people giving their all to God.Read and learn.Any significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. Do you agree? |
The mind: No matter what, where, when and how they proved it, anti tithers had and have made up their minds not to give even if it is God collecting tithe Himself. This is not the first, second, third and hundredth times such topic had come to the public domain for discuss on this forum. It will always end like this because when man makes up his mind to do and undo it takes the Spirit of God to change it even when it is so glaring. The Pharisees saw the hand writings, saw the demonstration and still never believed in Christ. So move on and do what you are convinced in your heart to do. But know for sure the parable of the man that hid his money, when the master came what was his reward? Your answer is as good as what is written in Matthew 25: 14-30.1. The Church is not Israel 2. The New Covenant is different from the old. It was a mystery to those of other ages and generations Colossians 1:26 3. Where do we find Teachings related to the new covenant? 4. Any significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life? |
shdemidemi: ^^^Absolutely! |
Bidam: Yeah..this is where most christians stop in their revelations and think that since Christ have fufilled the law;there are no more laws to be obeyed.Any significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. Do you agree? |
Joagbaje: The bible declares the blood of Jesus better than the blood of bulls. Blood of animals were to cover people flesh for a season . But the blood of christ is perfect and eternal . And it cleanses man spirit soul and bodyThe Bible also said in Romans 10: 4 - "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes" or Romans 8:1-4 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. |
Joagbaje: There's never a single scripture where God ever spoke against tithing .Is there a single scripture where God spoke against animal sacrifices in the temple? |
Joagbaje: Is the law bad ? The law contains vital kingdom principles which can be used for illustrations and references . Didn't paul quote the law many times. "Honor thy father " is it not in the law? Why would paul quote the law to the church? Why is it tithing satan fight ? It only shows that there's something very significant about tithing .1. Used for illustrations and references, yes. But taught as a way of life under the NEW COVENANT, no. 2. The same God, yes. Certain similar principles, yes. But quite a different system for living and administering the spiritual life. That a practice is in the Bible does not necessarily recommend it to be used or practiced by the Christian. The Christian must rightly divide whether such a practice is for him or not under the new Covenant. For example, the Bible, in the Old Testament has requirements for animal sacrifices and so on. Would anyone therefore justify animal sacrifice today simply on the basis that it is in the Bible? |
highyo: 1 Timothy 4 1-2Permit me to give fairly long response. Keeping to the issue in view – TITHING – it is necessary to focus on whether the Bible states that it is for the Christian UNDER THE NEW COVENANT. Jesus did not, repeat did not, live under the New Testament. He lived under a completely different dispensation. The church started at PENTECOST. The particular reference you made of Jesus’ observation had to do with GIVING OF OFFERING not paying of tithe. Any significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. The Christian way of life is unique and different from what the JEWS had. It was a ‘mystery’ to believers of previous times including Israel – Rom.16:25, 1 Cor. 2:7, Eph. 1:9, 3:3, 3:6, 3:9, Col. 1:26, etc . The prescription for the way of life for believers in other dispensations is unquestionably not the same for Christians under the dispensation of the church age. A number of things need to be borne i mind in looking at the issue of where Christians stand in relation to the Mosaic law or the Old Testament in general. A few points: 1. The 21st century Christian is not the first set of the body of Christ. 2. Do we know more of the Christian way of life than the Apostles did? 3. Did the Apostles give us what we need for the Christian way of life? 4. What blueprint can we find in the epistles for the Christian way of life? 5. Where the epistles and the Apostles resolved an issue are we at liberty to still say today that they did not do a good job at it? 6. What does it mean to be under a new Covenant? 7. Is God's system for the CHURCH the same as for Israel or other dispensations? 8. Is the Christian called upon to go back to any ritual or peculiar practice of the old covenant? I think a sincere look at these few points above should help a DISCERNING believer know where he should stand in relation to an issue such as tithing. Heb. 8: 13a - "In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete". See my post: STILL ON TITHING, ETC: THE BOOK OF ACTS GAVE US THE SOLUTION |
OLAADEGBU: Let Them AloneAny significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. Yes?, No? |
captivating: You van decide to give God a tithe of all youyou possess, it ddoesn't mean you are obliged to kkeep all laws.. the only problem is if you want to be saved by the law, then you must keep all to be savedAny significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. |
okeyxyz: It's all well and good to declare you are under a new law(like most christians do), the law of the spirit, etc. But one thing you'd failed to declare is what this new law says. Every law must have it's mandates and definitions and do's and don'ts. Do you just claim to be under a new law and then when I ask for definitions (according to this new law) you take me back to the law of sin and death(the law of moses) to carry on with it's old doctrines?? My point is: if you claim to be free from the law of moses, then you must not follow it's definitons of right and wrong. If you are under a new law then you must be expected to fulfill different expectations, not the expectations of the law of moses that you are supposed to be free from.Any significant thing required of the Christian will be found in the New Testament epistles which constitute the blueprint for living the Christian life. vickyO: I hope you believe in sin. Your definition of the Holy Spirit is wrong. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter Christ promised, He is not a doctrine. Don't get it all wrong and remember what Jesus said. IF your righteousness doesn't surpass those of the Pharisees, you can't get into heaven. Matt. 5:20Absolutely. He is a personality not just an impersonal thing or force, co-equal and co-eternal with God the Father and the Son. |
The Bible settled this issue in Acts 15: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell (vv. 28-29) The Christian way of life is unique and different from what the JEWS had. It was a ‘mystery’ to believers of previous times including Israel – Rom.16:25, 1 Cor. 2:7, Eph. 1:9, 3:3, 3:6, 3:9, Col. 1:26, etc . Would anyone therefore justify animal sacrifice today simply on the basis that it is in the Bible? Peter’s words: “Brothers … … Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of the disciples a yoke that neither we nor our fathers have been able to bear? We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved (and will get to heaven, and not through any practice such as tithing, firstfruits, etc – emphasis mine), just as they are.” Acts 15: 10-11. |
For the Malachi 3 crowd, they need to know that they are expected to COMPLETELY fulfill the rest of the Mosaic Law. That is why we have in Galatians 5:3 – “Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised (one aspect of God’s instruction that every Israelite was to fulfill) that he is obligated to obey the whole law”. Is this not clear enough? If you choose to live by or adopt one command of the law for your spiritual life you are expected to adopt every other one for you to be acceptable to God. So if you tithe, you are obligated to keep the whole law. That is what the Bible says. Maybe you can now begin to see the seriousness of this matter! See my complete post on the topic - If You Tithe, You Are Obligated To Keep The Whole Law! |
The popular portion that is usually quoted with respect to tithing is Malachi 3: 8-11. This passage refers to what was expected of the nation Israel to do amongst other things: One thing amongst others that they were equally required to keep doing. The original instruction for this was from the Book of the Law. There is therefore the need to go to the Mosaic Law to CLEARLY understand ALL that God asked Israel to do. A misunderstanding of God’s instruction will obviously lead to misapplication which we find all over the place today. For those who choose the route of keeping the law, of which tithing is a part, God’s requirement for getting a pass mark is 100% adherence to ALL the requirements of the law. This was the point James 2: 10 makes clear. The Law required strict adherence to ALL its tenets. Whoever keeps most of the law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. So, failing in one point, as far as the law was concerned, means breaking ALL of it! Therefore any Christian today who keeps one or two aspects of the law such as tithing or paying firstfruits offering and thinks he is accepted by God on that basis is making a big mistake. Some will claim ‘tithing by faith’ which perhaps means they say they choose to tithe like Abraham and so are not doing it under the law since Abraham did it pre-law. If it is to massage their consciences that they do this, fine. But they still need to show if God commanded or instructed them, as Christians, to do it that way. For the Malachi 3 crowd however, they need to know that they are expected to COMPLETELY fulfill the rest of the Mosaic Law. |
Christians must learn to rightly divide the Word of Truth. Animal sacrifices were AUTHORIZED in the Old Testament. How many Christians today will say that it should still be practiced these days? If the New Testament gives a CLEAR word on an issue is any Christian today at liberty to cancel it or query it? I made a post titled - STILL ON TITHING, ETC: THE BOOK OF ACTS GAVE US THE SOLUTION I recommend reading it. 3.
