I fear for my safety and that of my loved ones everyday in Nigeria. I thank God for each day of safety in this chaos. Forget the story. assume it is an allegory. Ask of the allegory is plausible. Whether as you said if "Nigerians harbour thieves" won't there be consequences for "harbouring thieves"? If we don't want the consequences what should we do? Do we all accept responsibility at a communal level? Of course the whole community cannot be guilty of the particular atrocities that brought the misfortune but the whole society is guilty of the culture in which those atrocities thrive. Each one of us is only guilty to the extent of our failure to discharge our responsibility from spreading the culture. Ozubulu is a symptom of what is wrong with us as a people. even if we focus on the "developing story" as you would have us urged we are only doing that at the risk of seeing another Ozubulu happen albeit in another dimension. At symptomatic level, I agree there are innocent people. But at pathogenic level, dear, you and I have roles to play and the earlier we start calling for a saner society the quicker we will stop or reduce the rate of terror in our land. |

He may be quite wrong in the degree of blames he apportioned to the parishioners or the community. But I will agree with him to the extent that "it takes a village to race a child". 3. It is our son. leave him alone! I do not know whether it is wrong to be human in such away that you care about people's tragedy even when they hate you for pointing out the misfortune likely to attend their attitude. Honestly, the problem with many developing country is greed and the opportunity too many people seek to show how greedy they could get. This being a prevailing attitude, it is just inconceivable that we can have a nation where youthful dreams can be guaranteed a chance in reality. Hence this Biafra thing. This Oduduwa thing this Arewa thing are all going to come as hostile to growth as you have all over Africa. Finally, I pray that in this time of Buhari and Osinbajo, Nigeria will witness attitudinal change and real progress. This FB post by Roz Ben-Okagbue says it all: Ozubulu... death of the innocent Yesterday gunmen stormed into a Catholic church in Ozubulu and gunned down members of the congregation who were attending Sunday mass. As the drama unfolded and social media was agog with gory pictures, the rumour mills started grinding and the blame was immediately directed at all sorts of terrorist groups. As the day progressed, however, the truth filtered through and it was revealed that the source of this massacre was an enemy within otherwise known as Greed. It is said that innocent people lost their lives in the incident but let us ask ourselves, is anyone really innocent in this? Can any of us claim to be innocent? Are we really surprised that this incident occurred? Have we not been courting this enemy for several years now in Igboland? Is it something that started today? According to reports corroborated by the governor of Anambra state, the incident was the outcome of a drugs war between two drug barons from Ozubulu who were fighting over a debt arising from a drugs deal. Having gone to the house of one of the barons known as “Bishop” and not finding him home, the gunmen proceeded to the church to seek him out and kill him. They marched into the church, saw his father and opened fire killing everyone who was in the way. What gave them the impetus to march into the church premises with their guns and open fire on ‘holy grounds’, committing an act that is a total abomination? They clearly did not recognize the holiness of the premises after all they were aware that the church was built from the proceeds of crime and drug sales. As far as they were concerned, they were home! And that is where the problem lies. That is where we should begin to question our own innocence in this matter. Is there anyone in that town who was unaware of “Bishop’s” reputation or the source of his wealth? Didn’t the priests accept his blood money to build their church? Didn’t the villagers attend the church knowing where the funds came from? Didn’t they treat the donor and his father with deference because of his ill-gotten wealth? What other outcome could we then expect? How then can we claim to have been innocent? I attended the funeral of my friend’s father in the East some years ago. At the end of the service, the priest began to name the ‘wealthy’ people in our midst and call them by name to come forward and make donations to the church. He thanked them all for being there and shamelessly badgered them for funds to renovate his church. Neither he nor the son of the deceased who assisted him in identifying the targeted donors saw it fit to thank the rest of us for travelling all the way from Abuja and assisting them in making the event a huge success. We were not important. The focus was on the wealthy people regardless of how this wealth was acquired. I attended another funeral in Ojoto some years ago. During the proceedings, several men, clearly of questionable character strolled in, accompanied by armed policemen to emphasize their importance. Some were said to be sons of Igwes from neighbouring towns whilst others were clearly successful men of the underworld. One who looked like he was someone’s houseboy dressed up in an ill-fitting safari suit stepped forward with his gun and began shooting in the air. I was horrified and terrified at the same time, and I complained bitterly at the evident lawlessness on display. People around me including my friends, looked at me like I was some spoil sport. Couldn’t I see that this added colour to the event? No one was concerned that the indiscriminate shooting apart from being illegal, could have resulted in a serious accident. They all left at the same time, jumping into their SUV’s and shooting in the air. I was told that the purpose of this was to ward off potential armed robbers since they had ‘sprayed’ huge sums of money at the event. The children present looked on in admiration and awe. These were their heroes and role models approved by us, the adults. So why are we shocked by Ozubulu’s tragedy? For years, young men with little education and no visible means of income, have come home and built palatial houses for their parents. How many parents refused to live in those houses? What message does that send to the youth? The same people come to the villages and install boreholes and build roads. Soon enough the villagers ‘beg’ them to run for office and before you know it, they are installed in the State or National Assembly or even run for the governor’s office. No questions asked about the source of their wealth. Why then should we be shocked? Bishop, the drug baron who the gunmen were after celebrated his 36th birthday commissioning roads that he tarred in his community. Governor Willie Obiano’s picture was used to advertise the event, thereby validating this young man. It appears from reports that the governor and the commissioner of police even attended the event. Did they ask him where the funds came from? Hadn’t they heard the rumours? Did they investigate? Are they really shocked at the outcome? Instead of exhibiting all this shock and sorrow, we should resolve today to end this cycle of greed and worshipping criminals. It’s been going on for so long and we are all guilty. The lesson learnt from Ozubulu is that we are all potential victims so we can no longer pretend that it does not concern us. Anyone of us could have been sitting in that church on Sunday. It was not an incident that just occurred, it was a disaster waiting to happen and it can happen again if we do not take steps to prevent it! Igbos were the ones in government with the north playing second fiddle. First Republic Zik was a ceremonial president. Balewa was the PM with all the Executive Powers. In the second Republic again. Shagari was the Executive president. Ekweme the vice. In 1999 Yorubas rejected the PDP as a northern contraption the igbos abandoned Ojukwu and went with the North. so tell me who had been worshiping the north with votes? The first alliance between north and west was 2015. But you forget your history of political subservience to wine about Yorubas status in the present govt. We should have stayed with GEJ and be content with just 2 substantive ministers. Omobola Johnson and Adèsina. You accused Yorubas of not supporting secession. I will let your forefathers answer you from the grave In 1953 the NPC under the leadership of my good friend, the late Sardauna, threatened to secede from the federation unless their 6-point proposals were adhered to. I had to use personal diplomacy. We had been personal friends since 1940. So, I saw Sir Ahmadu Bello and prevailed upon him that the unity of this country was greater than himself and myself and the other people too helped so that the North shifted grounds and agreed and so the country was saved. That was in 1953. Again, however, when the 1954 constitution conference started, my good friend, Chief Obafemi Awolowo tabled a motion to the effect that in the new constitution, provision should be made that any state which feels like seceding should do so. I was opposed to it and said ‘no’ and said that once we have a federation, we are indivisible and perpetual. That was when we began to use that expression - ‘The Indivisibility and perpetuity of the federation’ - and that to secede would amount to treason. And so, a debate ensued. Zik and his Igbo travellers won and Nigeria became indissoluble till today! You blamed Nigeria for the civil war. As per legal principle of indissolubility established by Zik, Igbos gave Nigeria the legal armour to prevent secession at all cost. Igbos killed leaders of other regions and celebrated the killings in the streets of the North. Ironsi promulgated Decree No 34 of 1966 abolishing the autonomy the region's had been enjoying. There is something about laws of warfare, it is called casus belli. cause of war. Each party to a war has a reason for the war. you have yours the north have theirs. at the end Nigerian law prevailed against Ojukwu. So you have a choice before a war. plan to fight and when you are starved run away with millions of dead bodies in your wake. or avoid war through international arbitrament. see Cameroon Vs Nigeria. So as per our documented history of 60 years the east have been the ones worshiping the north. The West were in opposition to both the North and the East as per who caused the war. Ojukwu caused it. With his stubbornness. If he knew how to run. He should have done that earlier. If fought gallantly to the end he would join those who died for the cause they believed in. cowards! |

Awo is celebrated on your currency, landmarks and citadels of learning. 50 years on Biafra is still mourned by your greatest (Achebe & Co ) and meanest (Kanu&co). So if mourning is better than celebration, I give up on your sadistic delusions. |

The principle was captured by Albert Einstein when he said NO PROBLEM CAN BE SOLVED AT THE LEVEL OF AWARENESS THAT CREATED IT. The awareness of ethnicity and religion "as constituted" is so prejudiced that nothing ennobling can come out of it. There is no exception to this rule all over the world. The awareness we need is awareness of "shared poverty" and "shared Ignorance" "Shared prosperity and shared enlightenment" As we make progress under this awareness, the fish monger or pepper seller will appreciate the importance of electing or voting for people who seem most likely to guarantee the the pursuits of livelihood. As of today, the majority of voters are ignorant. All they see are the obvious differences or similarities between themselves and their leaders in terms of ethnicity and religion. It is only after election that they begin to understand the gnawing disadvantage in the outcome of their choices. If APC voters for instance had insisted on debating the APC manifesto with the PMB team we wouldn't be where we are today. I supported APC because I knew it was appropriate to change PDP after 16 years of misery. I knew that ideologically APC will do no better than APC if we did not properly engage the APC leadership on the outlines of our common expectations of Change. Unfortunately those of us who wanted this engagement were in insignificant minority. The majority who simply trusted them and cheered them to victory are the ones complaining. Now we are on the march again asking for another form of change in structure. just as we did in 2015 we have no idea how this change should be constituted in foolproof details. give a local government the budget of a whole state and a free hand to operate that budget, the human capital development will not be different from what we have today. Of course their may be more infrastructure just as in Lagos and Akwa Ibom but corruption will surely kill their initiatives. politriks, sabotage, crime and all social evils will be at play. What would you say about a situation where your opponents work assiduously for your best intentions to fail so that he can gain power? I wish we can go straight to tackling the problems you have highlighted but I regret to acknowledge that we are too ignorant to appreciate the intricacies of corporate civilization. The solution to this ignorance is rigorous education. This may take few years if we have the right leaders. It may take decades if we don't have the right leaders. The only thing that can save Nigeria is a President that can achieve economic and educational empowerment for all Nigerians at the grassroots. The shut down of SE is a sign of widespread acknowledgment of IPOB for good or ill. There is no democratic yardstick to gauge the level of voluntary submission to the directives of IPOB. Even armed robbers can lock down a neighbourhood with a one paragraph letter. A bunch of terrorists can order a whole state to stay indoors in preparation for liberation. Election gives people the free wil to vote or not to vote. to accept cash in exchange for vote and damn the outcome of the election. IPOB should use ANAMBRA as a referendum. This practice is not new. Every election is seen as a referendum on the popularity of the Parties and issues in the election. The ANAMBRA election will be a referendum on acceptance or rejection of the Nigerian Federal constitution. Not necessarily every thing in it. just the essential principle of indissolubility and peaceful coexistence of the people thereof. what should IPOB do? 1. It may simply issue directive that Igbos should not participate in the election as a sign of rejecting the Federal constitution and all it represents forever. If IPOB achieve this without threatening or actually preventing Igbos from voting then it would have a cast iron evidence for the whole world that Igbos are essentially unanimous in leaving the Nigerian Federation. 2. IPOB on the other hand may field candidates for the election who will assume office for one thing and no other advocate for self determination just like the nationalists before independence. This approach is more legally purposive and it a mark of democratic civilization that the whole world can relate with. 3. IPOB may follow a known pattern of willful resistance of constituted authority. This has dire penal consequence under Nigerian laws. But the law does not prohibit offences acts it only spells out the consequence of offences. The law does not "say do not engage in breach public peace" rather it says This is an example of a provision on breach of public peace the Peace see. Criminal Code Act Chapter C39 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 69. When three or more persons, with intent to Carry out some Common purpose, assemble in such a manner or, being assembled, conduct themselves in such a manner, as to cause persons in the neighbourhood to fear on reasonable grounds that the persons so assembled will tumultuously disturb the peace, or will by such assembly needlessly and without any reasonable occasion provoke other persons tumultuously to disturb the peace, they are an unlawful assembly. It is immaterial that the original assembling was lawful if, being assembled, they conduct themselves with a common purpose in such a manner as aforesaid. An assembly of three or more persons who assemble for the purpose of protecting any house against persons threatening to break and enter the house in order to commit a felony or misdemeanour therein is not an unlawful assembly. When an unlawful assembly has begun to act in so tumultuous a manner as to disturb the peace, the assembly is called a riot, and the persons assembled are said to be riotously assembled. 70. Any person who takes part in an unlawful assembly is guilty of a misdemeanour, and is liable to imprisonment for one year. 71. Any person who takes part in a riot is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years. The law of course is an ass. For some socio-political some laws under some circumstances are more honoured in breach than in observance. What we know in practice however is that the State frequently apply its laws as necessity requires and laws serve as reference point in relating with "a person of interest" Make no mistake about it money will be made by one or more parties in any of the three options above. Money are made through security vote, compromise, mobilization, propaganda, conflict resolution or prosecution. Any party who wishes to participate in one way or the other should be sure that even if he would not get a dime, no one one should become richer at his own expense. |

in the early days of BH PDP leadership under GEJ described BH as social justice crusaders. Then the crusaders concentrated on attacking churches. soon BH turned on to all targets churches, mosques market, schools parks. Do not forget it started as a virtually non-violent radical movement. IPOB is following the footstep of BH. Once again PDP and APGA politicians in SE were defending them as advocates of Social Justice. Alas. IPOB is now threatening a showdown with the SE politicians over election stoppage in SE. In the days ahead Nnamdi Kanu will either join a wing of IPOB that would certainly call for violence against the state in order to prove a point or he would run to another Ivory Coast. It is time to issue "travel/ investment advisory" to aliens and non-IPOB in the East. |

A number of other national and regional institutions with research and training interests in space science and technology are also affiliated to it. Following resolution 45/72 of 1990 and 50/27 of 1995, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation of UNISPACE 82, that the United Nations Programme on Space Applications should assist member states in enhancing their indigenous capacity in the utilization of SST for national/regional development. The UN office of Outer Space Affairs (UN-OOSA) was mandated to establish Centres for Space Science and Technology Education in developing countries on a regional basis. The host institution for the Centre in Nigeria is Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. For the effective take-off of the activities of the Centre, Prof. Wale Omole, the then Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University nominated Prof. E. E. Balogun of the Department of Physics to work with other members of the Technical Advisory Committee to put things in place. To fulfill the hosting guidelines, the ground floor of the new Faculty of Science extension was approved temporarily for the centre. The building was furnished by National Agency for Science Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). The signing of the draft agreement for the centre in Nigeria was done on the 22nd of November, 1998 in Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, after which, the commissioning of the Centre's facilities was done on the 24th of November, 1998. After considering the fact that the University was expected to offer a suitable permanent site for the Centre, an area off the Road 1 within Science and Technology Park was approved for development. Co-located in the same area are Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Surveys (RECTAS), Centre for Energy Research and Development (CERD) and National Centre for Technology Management (NACETEM). The centre is being supervised by National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA). The first statement from Charles Onyeama, which was made in 1945, was the first overtly tribal and divisive comment that was made and recorded in the politics of southern Nigeria in our history. That is where and when tribalism in the south actually started. After that comment, and as a direct reaction to it, the Yoruba established the ”Egbe Omo Oduduwa” to further and protect Yoruba interests and after that came the formation of the Action Group in 1948. The second statement from Zik, which was made in 1949 (and which clearly shows that the great Zik of Africa had forgotten that the NCNC was not an Igbo party at the beginning and that it had in fact been established by an upper class and very well educated Yoruba man by the name of Sir Herbert Macaulay, one of the famous ”Black Victorians” from the Lagos Colony, and who, at his death bed, was gracious enough to hand over the leadership of the party to him even though he was Igbo) confirmed that tribalism was here to stay in the south and that ever since that time the Igbo had an agenda to dominate others. This sentiment and this unfortunate Igbocentric attitude is what cost Zik the premiership of the Western Region in 1953 when the NCNC narrowly lost to the Action Group. It is clear from this that if you want to know who started tribalism in southern politics and the politics of the southern protectorate of Nigeria, it was not the Yoruba or the southern minorities but the Igbo. The excesses of the Igbo State Union and their treatment of the southern minorities and the Yoruba from 1943 till 1967 was completely unacceptable. The rest of the south were prepared to accept the Igbo as equals with open arms but they were not prepared to be politically dominated or conquered by them. When you realize that despite decades of civilization ahead of Igbos the Fulanis and Yorubas never said they were the chosen messiah of Africa. Ajayi Crowther who was the first African to introduce literacy to Igbos did not even claim his tribe was superior to Igbos. just a little taste of education and power, igbos believed they could lord it over the whole of Africa. |

APC supporters are jubiltating over the prospect of capturing south east. It is expected that Kanu the fearless IPOB leader will not chicken out of his promise to his followers that Elections will not hold in SE unless there is a referendum. APC will therefore claim South East virtually unchallenged. IPOB youths are counting on this promise as the ultimate test of the fearless Kanu's supremacy. The nature of the riot were clashes between Northerners who were opposed to Nigeria's Independence and Southerners made up of mainly the Yorubas and the Igbos who supported immediate independence for Nigeria. The riot that lasted for four days claimed many lives of the Southerners and Northerners and many others were wounded. Causes The remote cause of the riot was the strained relationship between the Northern and Southern political leaders over the issue of self-government in 1956. This strained relationship started with a 1953 motion for self-government for Nigeria in 1956 tabled in the House of Representatives by a member of the Action Group (AG), Chief Anthony Enahoro . The Northerners did not accept the motion. The leader of the Northern People's Congress (NPC) and the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, in a counter-motion, replaced "in the year 1956" with the phrase "as soon as practicable". Another Northern member of the House moved a motion for adjournment, a motion which Southern members of AG and the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) viewed as a delay tactics. All the AG and NCNC members in the house walked out as a result of the adjournment motion. When the Northern delegates left the House, they were confronted by hostile crowds in Lagos who insulted, jeered and called them all sorts of names. Members of the Northern delegation were embittered and in their "Eight Point Program" in the Northern Regional Legislative House, they sought for secession. The last straw that broke the camel's back was the tour by a delegation of the AG and NCNC led by Chief Samuel Akintola . That tour which was aimed at campaigning for self-government acted as the immediate cause of the Kano riot. It sparked off a chain of disorder that culminated in the riot. The riot took place at Sabon Gari an area predominantly occupied by southern Nigerians. Riot There was already growing tension in the North when the Action Group northern tour came to Kano during the weekend of May 15-17, the tension was a result of the hostility towards the Northern delegation in Lagos. An orderly demonstration by the Northern Peoples Congress supporters against a proposed Action Group meeting took place on Friday, May 15. This was followed by small skirmishes on Saturday. Disturbances that led to the riot started out at the Colonial Hotel, on May 16, 1953 which was supposed to be the venue of a meeting by the Action Group led by Akintola. Prior the meeting, the Kano Native Authority withdrew its permission to grant the meeting. A mob gathered outside of the hotel and started stoning people close to the hotel, during the fracas, two people believed to be southerners died, the mob later attempted to gain entry into Sabon Gari but were subdued by the Native Authority police. The situation became more serious and became an inter-ethnic crisis on Sunday, May 17 when mobs of hooligans from Northern section of Kano, in particular Fagge attempted to break into the Southern and Igbo dominated Sabon Gari area with some success, though their original chants were against the Yorubas , the casualties in the Sabon Gari area were mostly Igbos. [2] Shops in the Sabon Gari market were looted and violent attacks took place. But the Native Authority police and the Army were called upon and prevented further entry of hooligans into the Kano area. The skirmishes further spilled into the indigenous Kano areas such as Fagge where small unorganized groups of people of different ethnic groups clashed. [3] An exchange of prisoners took place to reduce the tension, Southerners who were arrested were released and Northerners also released; Northerners in the Sabon Gari area were asked to leave and Southerners in the Fagge area were asked to move to Sabon Gari for the meantime. About 46 Nigerians mostly Northerners and Igbos died during the clash and more than 200 people were treated for injuries. Though it was immediately called an inter-ethnic riot by the colonial government in Nigeria, the political leaders termed it a political riot between people who want self government in 1956 and those who want imperialism to continue. |
