Most Rav4 vehicles on our roads these days, are mostly the 4cyinder 2.4L engines, with the V6 3.5L engine in the minority. This Rav4 in particular, was brought to us from another shop for corrections. CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS Owner had taken the car there for the following reasons: 1. Loss of power at every upshifts (acceleration). 2. Knocking noise at every cold startups, and whenever the car is driven. 3. Subtle engine misfires. HISTORY According to owner, the engine block of the car was broken(it threw a connecting rod), which resulted in replacing the engine block, and transferring the stock pistons, and rings from the old engine. OBSERVATIONS/DIAGNOSIS 1. Check engine light was lit on the dashboard. 2. Retrieved codes related to evaporative emissions, oxygen sensor, and cylinder 3 misfire pending. 3. Inspected spark plugs on cylinders #1 &3. #1 was not picked up by the scan tool, but had some form of engine oil fouling. #3 had no oil fouling on its centre electrode. 4. Opening up the valve cover, the valve train components were really clean. 5. Engine oil used in the engine when the car was at our base was synthetic oil. A probable reason why the engine valve train was clean so much without carbon deposits in there. 6. All the camshafts and gears were all replaced from the previous shop. 7. Crankshaft journal bearings, thrust washers, piston rings, were all defective. They showed signs of scouring on them. 8. Pistons themselves had no signs of any damage resulting from thermal or oil starvation causes. 8. Precious shop reused the old top cylinder gaskets, and the piston rings that were in there before. 9. Here was the big shocker to us. During the head job, we also discovered that the valve stem seals, were not properly fixed. We could removed them all by hand. THE FIX! Disassembled the engine completely, and replaced all parts that were not replaced in the first place. 1. All piston rings 2. All timing chains and timing chain auto tensioners. For my engine rebuilds, just like I always say, I use conventional oils just to make the piston rings sit properly, before using the more expensive or synthetic oil, if that's what a vehicle's specifications calls for. In this job, it is pertinent you have a trained eye, to listen to engine sounds before the rebuilds, and after the rebuilds. That would help to avert future problems, if they are other things to readjust. The tasks involved in the disassembly, and rebuilding of 2gr engines, are more tasking than a 1gr engine, found in Toyota 4Runners, etc. Just to replaced the timing chains on a 2gr engine, the entire engine has to be removed, while for a 1gr engine, removing the engine is not a necessity. Thanks for reading. Regards |
There should be a check engine light on the dashboard. Get it scanned first! |
Let's not all conclude on the mechanic yet guys. An investigation is needed, on exactly what is going on with the car. He can't get such info online here. He needs to take it to a shop for that to be assessed. Some questions for you: 1. Have you experienced this issues prior to the last engine that was there before? Pls be truthful here. If no, then that engine may have issues related to overheating. 2. At that price, was it a complete engine, or just boranle? You'd get that engine complete for around #300k+. You have two options: 1. If it hasn't being long you got the engine, at least, its under warranty abi? Go get a replacement. 2. Repair the one there, and move on. Regards, Joseph |

diportivo. I don't think you really understand why you're saying here. How would you say a big daddy Camry does not have where the idle speed is adjusted? Have you worked on a car like this before, or what? Can you get a friend's car, and pls knee down to the accelerator peddle. You'd see the pedel/throttle sensor positioned there. |
I'd send them a PM now, let's see what explanations, they cone up with then. |
Welcome back guys! I'm back online here. The ban on me was lifted this morning, since about two days ago. Just like I told radautos, MPVgoddess, and a host of others about the deliberate removal of my write-ups, it would behoove you guys to note that I put up a write up on Monday, or so. Immediate, it was taken down. I followed all suggestions put forward by you guys. I moved all my details to my signature, removes even the website link. Yet that didn't work. Like I have always being saying, there's something more than meets the eyes on this platform. But we go breakthrough all the brick walls with time. Regards people! |
¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ Have you scanned the car yet for codes? Any suggestions I'm giving here, is off of my head, since we don't have a scanned codes available here. The idling on display is extremely low. It is supposed to be below 2RPM. Definitely not on 1RPM. It should be between 700-800. If it's below these ranges, the car would stall, and won't power the AC system. Your AC system performance is proportional to engine revolution, and that is what accounts for the experiences you've encountered when you rev the engine, the AC cooling improves, and when you don't rev, the cooling is poor or none existent at all. ¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ Suggestions/Questions for you: 1. Have you complained to your mechanic about this issues? 2. When you rev the engine, does the engine sounds as if it hesitate (something that is not smooth kind of)? 3. Ask your mechanic to adjust the engine idling located on the peddle(that is where the pedel/throttle sensor is located). You used a 6/7mm spanner to achieved that. A scan tool can also help if you have one. 4. If #3 above fails, then a vacuum leak somewhere maybe present on the car. PS: Would have replied yesterday, but I was banned from the forum since Monday. The ban got lifted this morning. Hope this meets you well. |
Yeah, would try your suggestions though. I know it won't mame a difference.
But hey! Nothing bad in trying emmm out. |
Y are you guys not getting your cars scanned for codes? Do the needful, if you don't want to throw money at parts. |
@MPVgoddess. All info were moved to the signature section as suggested by you, and others over here, as regards, the repeated threads being deleted. Now, when you click on my web address on my signature, this is what you get: A BLANK DISPLAY. So, pretty much, there's more than meets the eyes. We'd definitely overcome all this. JAH GUIDE, AND JAH BLESS! @MPVgoddess. Are there no ladies coming to dispute this thread? Emmm, this guy wants to spoiled your chances somehow o! |
This man is just a hypocrite. The marginalization has being for ages. KI don't think Atiku would even allowed Tinubu to be there. Only time would tell. As regards marginalization and na treatments to the Igbo's, that's visibly seen daily. |
Seller even disclosing the next maintenance item must be a different human being. Some don't tell you all that. Strong car, Honda bullet. Bargain for #180-200k and hear what he tells you. I nearly bought one for #150k for a friend, but that had issues with fuel pump to be fixed. Regards |
