I love naija sha *shakes head*... this is why many of us won't come back to Nigeria. Here we have people celebrating the fact that chaos, crime (hitting a traffic warden and/or fleeing the scene of an accident is a crime in other serious countries) and violence are a way of life and they wonder why Nigeria isn't progressing. |

dearstan: Someone I know has a B1/B2 USA visa that would expire in April 2016. She didn't get to use the visa during it's validity, but planning on a trip later in September 2016. Last time she traveled to US was in 2013 on an older visa which expired in 2015. She did drop-box for the subsequent and current visa.
She wants to re-apply via drop-box for a new visa in April 2016 and has a concern that her not using the prior visa might pose some issues with the consular officer.
Is this concern valid? Not really. I would wager it even improves her chances. If she is called for an interview and asked why she did not use her visa, she can simply say she could not make it because she had other commitments that tied her back to her home country. |

SAMUELS3: I left home by 3:00am for 6:30am flight to New York on the 5th got to the airport around 3:40am, proceeded to the check point, my bags was checked and the immigration officers requested for money because I carried foodstuff voluntarily gave them 1k, my bags was weighed and I got my boarding pass. i hooked up with my family again to say good bye, it wasn’t easy to bid them farewell, mum wanted to cry, i hugged her and turned my face away in order not to cry too lol. She loves me so much. I left them, waiting to be called into the plane. My name was called along with three other guys, we were told that something was discovered in our bags and they need to check the bags again, I was afraid later remained calm since I have no contraband. The bags was checked, the officers was like oh it’s honey, you’re good to go. On the plane, we were served tea/coffe, one small bread (look like agege bread), yourghurt , I ate everything na my money na LOL, I was actually looking forward to another food but none. We had a layover at Casablanca, met a beautiful sierra Leone lady (Amina) going to Washington DC, she graduated from UNT, we got talking, she was like this is your first time, I said yes, she said I can smell you, you’ve not been hit by the cold. We talked at length and dropped her number and asked me to call when I reach my destination. I connected to the Casablanca airport wifi chatted with few friends for a while before departure. Fast forward, boarded connecting flight from casanblanca to New York, I ate all the foods served too, funny enough no stomach disorder. Got to the POE, a lots of people on the queue. Me: Good evening, how are you doing? CBP: cool, how was your flight? Me: Fine, I enjoyed it. (he collected my passport, i20, declaration form) CBP: what is the name of your sch? Me SNHU CBP: what Course? Me: Msc Operation and project management CBP: Your Bsc? Me: Quantity surveying CBP: Ok good, Welcome to America. Me: I collected my passport, i20 and claimed my bag. I went outside looking for where to borrow phone, hehee I ran back inside the cold was crazy lol. i doubled my jacket and went back still the same thing, I sha maintained, today na today. I met one naija lady i asked her to help me call my brother (PA imperiouxx na my brother na) lol, she was like call the number, I was looking for my phone, she said so you don’t know your brother’s number off hand?, I quickly remembered that the number starts with 575 but don’t know the rest, I called that then brought out my phone and called the remaining numbers, told her wanted to be sure. LOL I called him (imperiouxx) and he said it will take him over 1 hr to get to the airport from his place, then I chilled for him and described where I was and what I wore. His beautiful wife found me where I was freezing and we hurriedly carry the bags, along the line lost my charger. We found imperiouxx outside and we moved, they showed me round, though it was dark couldn’t see much of New York, they bought me Chinese food and a good place to sleep, I showered and used wifi to messaged my parent, slept like a baby. LOL The following day (6th) his wife prepared a nice meal for me with tea and milk, we entered train, ferry and took some pictures along the way and finally took me to where I will get a taxi to Laguardia airport, lest I forget she bought me new charger too. Got to the airport, took a connecting flight to my destination. The couple (PA Imperiouxx and ga2157) showed me lots of love, advised me. May God continue to strength your marriage and bless your home beyond your imagination, may the Lord makes his face to shine upon you, give you peace; this is the least you shall be in Jesus name. I don’t know them from Adam, I hope to repay them in multi fold so help me God.
So sorry for long epistle. All i want to ask imperiouxx is where in the world did he find such a wonderful woman to marry? |

You can always adjust your status anytime you want from B1 to F1. Here are the link To others who may be interested... a few rules of thumb to follow: 1. Just because it says so on the USCIS website that you "may" (note the operative word) does not mean you should. Always remember, immigration decisions you take today have consequences in future. 2. Applications to adjust status from B1 to F1, within 30-60 days of entering the US on a B1 visa are generally rejected by the USCIS. Early applications such as this are always considered "preconcieved intent", unless you specifically indicated at your B1 interview that you would like to consider the option of adjusting status to F1 during your trip. 3. If you applied for a B1 at the interview and also mentioned the option of adjusting to an F1, the VO will also adjudicate your eligibility for an F1 visa at that time and note "prospective student" on your visa. 4. Remember, should your attempt to adjust to F1 in the US be turned down, your chances of getting an F1 or B1 visa in your home country diminishes since an attempt to circumvent immigration rules will already be noted on your record. 5. The opportunity to adjust from B1 to F1 was severely restricted after 9-11, so this is not a trivial matter. 6. As you may be aware when it comes to US law, "may" does not mean " you should". |

All I can say is that man was favored because I don't think he has enough money to cover his trip which the VO is aware,I guess she was in a good mood.Congrats man,i tap from your testimony,I pray to meet a VO like dis when it's my turn. So the guys who were rejected were not favored? femi321: To be honest i think your reply is harsh with no sense of reality. How many student get housing before leaving Nigeria? How many students will pay for housing they cant see? Not all schools have chaperon or whatever you call it that will pick one up at the airport. Most of us had people in the respective cities our schools are that gave us head ups and made the settling down easy and i think that's what he/she is try to do too. Because it was smooth for you doesn't mean everybody always have it smooth. I'm not sure i understand your point. These things are not rocket science at all. Every school program has a student liaison who typically serves as a chaperone for international students. That you haven't asked does not mean they don't exist. You need to do your own homework. NL did not exist prior to 2005, i started school in the same upstate NY without knowing a soul too... i was not 40 years old at the time. That is reality. |

anaccondac: Calm your tip down. They wouldn't make provision for such in the first place. You can adjust your status to F-1 while on B1 visa. You are not violating your visa terms in NO way Of course, those provisions were put in place for special circumstances, not to be used as a way to avoid applying for F1 visas in your own home country. Its a matter of time before it gets shut down, thanks to wanton abuse from folks like you... and people wonder why its incredibly hard for Nigerians to get visas anywhere. Here is your problem - you are not thinking long term. Applying to adjust status to F1 from a B1 within the first 60 days of entering the US will trigger a red flag - it will be viewed as preconceived intent (unless you mentioned the possibility of attending school in your B1 interview). Even if you scale through, expect to have it pop up when you get to the point of adjusting status to permanent residency a few years down the line. Considering that you have no more than 90 days to stay in the US and adjustment of status will take 1-2 months to be approved, how is it possible to reasonably adjust status in the US? |

By now you should have done the following: 1. Searched for and found housing - either through the school or directly through a rental agency. 2. Requested a chaperone through your program liaison who can pick you up from the airport and help you navigate the system for the first few days. If you did nothing of the sort, what was your plan? |

anaccondac: If you're already in US, you can apply for your admission from there. You can change status too if you don't have any intention of coming back. I thought you're in Nigeria No you can't. This wanton disregard for rules is why getting visas to the US has become an exercise in praying and fasting. Simply come back to the country, as you stated you would in your B1 visa interview, then apply for an F1. Be honest! It really isn't that hard! |

Bidexluv: Thought as much. Thanks The Phd isnt tough to apply for depending on 3 factors; 1. GRE score - needs to be very high 2. Your transcript - if you show continuous improvement over the years (i.e. your 2.2 was based solely on poor performance in the first/second years), then you stand a good chance. 3. Well articulated statement of purpose - i.e. your research plans and who you intend to work with and why. |

tzetzefly: We don't have to be so denigrate in our speech and assessment. Past experiences has made it problematic making positive judgement on genuine applicants. What is necessary is for would be applicants to be constructive and organised before & during interviews this helps in a lot of ways. In my view, what is necessary is for visa applicants to be entirely honest in their applications and at their interviews. |

Secondly, would my B1/B2 visa be cancelled when I apply for the F1? I heard it gets cancelled without prejudice and my F1 would get cancelled too.
Please I need guidance. Come back to Nigeria and apply for an F1. You can't change status from B1 to F1 in the US. No your B1 visa will not be cancelled just because you applied for an F1 visa. No begging, no prayers, no need for fasting, no need to practice interview answers. They simply mail you the passport with the stamped visa... no celebrations, congratulations or anything of the sort. Its simply a visa, not an extension of life.
