Enjay11: Don't worry I'll excuse your ignorance. There's really no point arguing. You should understand the meaning of a word before using it. If there would be no point arguing over what is effectively a crime. Good luck. I expect you back here in a few years whining about how nigeria is better. |

If you know you can't give a matured advice, please don't bother . Thanks I presume by "matured advice" you mean doing the typical Nigerian thing - which is to look the other way and condone crime as "hustling"? Sorry. You're only upset because your mentalities are no different. |

Lets learn to stop criticizing people who are trying to achieve dreams...Even if he is working illegally, he is going to do some hardwork to earn a living which is a lot better than stealing, 419 and defrauding people...You should only advice him of the implications and stop this public slandering Lol and there you have a clear example of why Nigeria is such a dump. Criminals supporting mediocrity and fraudulent behavior... in the name of god of course. You people disgust me. |

Enjay11: Dude calm down! I never said I wanted to be illegal, I'm making enquiries and maybe you have someone back home sending you money but I don't so if I get a job under the table to support my education then hell yes I'll take the job.....in case you don't know it's California and the cities thrives on such jobs... That's fraud period. A job "under the table" means you're not paying taxes on what you earn, which is technically illegal. I find it amusing that you're being indignant about committing what essentially amounts to a crime. Secondly, did you tell the VO during your visa interview that you would need to work a job under the table to support your education? Isn't that lying to obtain an immigration benefit - another violation that would normally get your visa voided? You obviously submitted a financial statement claiming you had enough money to support yourself as a student - so basically that was a lie. As a student, you are not allowed to work at all in your first year... So basically you're a lying, hypocritical, criminal... and you wonder why Nigerians have an extremely difficult time obtaining visas. |

V.O - why are u going to the us Me : going on vacation with my aunt and her husband
V.O - where are u going??
Me - orlando florida
V.O - how long are u staying for
Me - 3 weeks
V.O - why are u not going with ur mum??
Me - she has a lot on her hands right now and my aunt promised me if i made 4.5 GP in my last exams, she will take me on vacation
V.O - Are you single
Me- Yes( am suprised she asked this cuz am only 19 years) V.O - How long are u staying( she asked again)
Me - 3 weeks
V.o - sorry blah blah ( blue paper)
People that said 10 days were given visas but 3weeks, 4 weeks were given blue paper.
Now i dont know if i should re apply and change duration to 10 days. Am so sad cuz every thing i said was true and i was still denied. I feel quite sorry for you. It seems to me that you should be a genuine candidate for a visa. I was in the very same spot you were when i got my first US visa - 19, just finishing my 4th year in college and going for a vacation on the invite of my aunt. I got the visa without much ado. But that was just a few years ago, things have certainly changed since then... and much of it has to do with Nigerians themselves. People lie blatantly at the embassy... you all claim you have ties and will return but end up never doing so. Fake documents, false reasons for traveling... i don't blame the VOs... theirs is a hard job. How can you tell who is genuine from the liars? |

Look elsewhere Europeans are law abiding... if your friend was legal and not being a nuisance, no one would have deported him. Its not about racism, its about Nigerians ruining every country that makes the mistake of letting them in. |

InvertedHammer: LOL. A house you bought $260k is now worth $340k. On paper, that is a profit of $80k. Great!
Now grab a paper, pencil and a calculator. Add up all your payments, interests and property taxes (excluding cost of maintenance). Primary residence is never an investment.
How many people do you see owning multiple properties in US? Extremely rare because the mortgage style of financing offers little home for growth. The difference is that house owners in Nigeria are real landlords.
You made interesting assumptions: 1) You will be healthy enough to pay off your mortgage for the remaining years. 2) Your job will be secure in the next 20+ years. 3) Past performance is an indication of future performance.
The system that values your house at $340k can arbitrarily value it at $100k next year without any physical change to your property. Many people lost their houses in 2008-2011. Some ended up abandoning their houses.
US system is set up for debt. We live that way. But you cannot for the life of me tell me that I am better off with my mortgage of $6k in a month. Some knowledgeable Nigerians take out their equities to buy out properties elsewhere. That should be in your game plan.
Oh and by the way, after paying for 20 years, your now lovely wife may decide that she is fed up with you per irreconcilable differences. Guess what? You pack out. Spread your risks. \ I'm not going to bother with the argument over who made the better investment in terms of buying a house. But here is the problem, a lot of arguments like yours miss the point... the beauty of living in America vs. Nigeria goes beyond the cost of a house... its the intangibles that money can't buy that are missing in Nigeria! You talk of the guy who built a house in Ajegunle... did you include the 9 ft fence with barbed wire he built just to keep armed robbers at bay? What of the borehole he has to build, the large komatsu generator he must constantly fuel and service just to have electricity more than 2 hours a day? Should we talk of the terrible roads he drives on, the fact that if he had a heart attack today he has less than a 5% chance of survival no thanks to a non-existent emergency service system and poor health care facilities? Is he sure of getting home without being shot on the highway by robbers? What of the time he spends queuing to buy fuel at the gas station, the fact that his job is not secure and he cannot count on a reliable justice system if the government decides to seize his house for no reason tomorrow? Yes the guy in Ajengule may own his own house outright... but i can guarantee you even a poor fool in America would never trade places with him in a million years. |

I can't do the semester cos The fees are too expensive...what are my options guys? Anyone been through this before? You have zero options. Your school holds all the cards. Do one semester with them then transfer. Your school obviously has been burnt before by folks like you and wants to avoid getting blacklisted by the USCIS as simply an I-20 mill (aka use them to get into the US then transfer to somewhere less expensive). teepee4Him: First. Let me appreciate those who painstakingly respond to and help some of us 'newbies' in here. The good Lord will favour you in all ways..
In my opinion, I guess I am still quite new in the system to comment. However, from the 20days spent in here thus far, I think it is EASIER AND BETTER to stay in Nigeria (if you don't have money to spend and you don't have mind to do things in the 'wrong' way) than to come in here... (Well, I might be wrong though)
The system is just too Hostile.
My advice - PLEASE ensure you get a FUNDING (G.A, R.A, or the likes).
Now to my question - It happens I have an admission @ a school (no funding and high tuition). Should be starting this Spring. However I discussed with a professor willing to accept me at Texas A&M for Summer.
If I am able to secure the admission letter before paying the fees, Is it possible I transfer successfully without falling out of status? Is it possible I change I-20 by February to the new school and remain here till the program starts by summer?
In the event I pay the fees and after a semester I transfer to the new school (with only 10 credit hours done) Would I transfer to start afresh or will the credit hours count?
I do hope someone understands my plight and gives me advice.
N.B:'My papa no get money oooo'
God bless This is what happens when people fail to plan and think getting a visa is all you have to worry about. The system is not hostile at all... the reason you think Nigeria is better is because there is no structure there... anyone can get away with anything and rules are meant to be broken and never followed. For once, you're in a society where begging, connection and egunje is not an option. Good luck. |

I will be filling I-485 (adjustment of status) in the US soon. However on my birth certificate, my middle and last name is there but my first name is missing. My parents were undecided about a first name at the time of registration of my birth. From childhood, I have been accustomed to being called my first name and I have used it in many of my documents.
I don't think the local government area that issued it can correct this (Since it was done in 1982, in my country). Will an affidavit of "same person" from parents solve this? Anyone with similar experience?
Please help Talk to an immigration lawyer, this can seriously delay your I-485... they take birth certificates very seriously and they may require you to provide more proof than a mere letter. Save yourself the unecessary RFEs. |

Playa0ne: Its a good idea to go learn or hustle for a while abroad (it re-orientates and frees your mind from all the bullshit that you learnt in Niger) education in the west will give you the mind of a God when compared to that of a Nigerian confined to this shores ...the country is really beautiful and you can save some average money, but you need to get a plan and leave as soon as possible or the system traps you. What system? I've lived here 12 years and have not felt trapped by the system. I often feel that the Nigerians who live here and yet rail against the "system" here are mostly those who either did not fully assimilate into the country, allow their inferiority complex to marginalize them or simply were not able to succeed in the system. My brother, cousins and i are making it quite well in corporate America and not a single one of us will contemplate spending one night in Nigeria if it can be helped. No system is perfect, but you cannot convince me that Nigeria holds any value to anyone who appreciates real living (as against merely existing). Its easy to speak from your perch. You will always have an American passport to allow you to escape back to the "trap" you despise once things get bent out of shape for you in Nigeria. For what its worth, will you give up your US citizenship? If not, why not? I was thinking about the tit for tat here as i drove home from work. I thought a lot about what home meant. Then it hit me - home is where i have peace, security, justice. Home is where i know i can drive at night, alone, on impulse, and have zero fear of armed robbers or area boys or bad roads. Home is going back to my abode, knowing i won't have to struggle to find kerosine to cook, that i won't need candles as my source of light, that i will turn on the tap and water will flow and that my biggest problem would be what to cook rather than if i will get to eat or not. Yes, there is racism here... but so what, its not like my black Nigerian brother did any better for me. The average 18-year old American kid can take a backpack, pick a ticket to anywhere in Europe and fly out... with nothing but a few dollars in their pocket. In Nigeria, successful middle class adults have to provide tax forms, letters from employer, return tickets home, bank account information, invitation letters, cram visa interview questions and answer + 7 day fasting and prayer, just to spend a few days in South Africa of all places. My brother... America isn't perfect, but i'm sure glad i live here not in Lagos. |

There is something called freewill and the rule of law. Even your bible asks you to be obedient to the authority of your government.
